Twins, Joe Mauer agree to 8 year, $184 million contract extension

Joe Mauer and the Twins have reportedly agreed to an 8 year, $184 million contract extension that will start in 2011.

This should keep Mauer with the Twins for, if not the rest of his career, most of the rest of it.

Hm.

Well there goes my Marcus Lemon-for-Joe Mauer and cash trade proposal I was writing up to send to T.R. Sullivan.

There’s a fair amount of risk, as one might expect with any eight year contract (especially for a catcher) but that’s just the price you have to pay when signing amazing players.

I think he’s going to give St. Louis a bit of a discount and he also doesn’t have the Yankees to negotiate with. My guess is that he’ll get something around A-Rod’s original contract with Texas with plenty of incentives that could kick it up by at least 10 million.

Assuming that's true, they'll have plenty of good, solid midrange options this off season.

Derek Lee and Carlos Pena have to be attractive options for the big market team looking to add a 1b. Paul Konerko and Adam Dunn too a lesser extent. Possibly Berkman as well, though I think Houston’s gonna exercise that 15mm option.

But I think Boston’s stocked at 1b option with Youk and Lars Anderson if he can maybe remember how to hit the ball hard next year.

Plus if they resign V-Mart he’s gonna need somewhere to play the games when he’s not behind the plate.

Because he would set a precident to have a long career at catcher that tall.

And he’s already had back issues.

Sure, he could change history, and I think BT’s assumption is a little far, but I seriously don’t he’ll be a catcher for all of that contract, and if he is, I doubt he’s playing many games.

by philkid3 on Mar 21, 2010 11:00 PM CDT up reply actions

Well

I know Mauer is taller than all these guys, but not by much. Johnny Bench was 6’1", Carlton Fisk was 6’2", Mike Piazza was 6’3". It worked out okay for all of them. Sandy Alomar was 6’5" and he did alright too. I don’t think it’s unheard of that Mauer has a long, productive career, but I understand the concerns. I definitely think he’ll play more than 2-3 years at catcher over the course of the contract though, wouldn’t surprise me a bit to see him play out the whole thing at catcher. Like DShep said, he’s still pretty young.

He IS the Twins because he IS the best player on the Twins.

If Pujols went there, he’d be the Twins next.

Just like if Face left here, and Mauer came, Mauer would be the Rangers.

Most fans have very short memories.

Disagree, can't compare to Face or Al

Mauer is a home grown star, not an import, and he took that discount to stay knowing he could land bigger $ on the coast.

Agreed, $23M/year is crazy

He’s a great player and all, but he’s getting paid like someone who hits 45 HR / 120 RBI each year. Mauer has never had a 100+ RBI season, for crying out loud. He’s the Tony Gwynn of the catcher position with more pop, which is extremely rare, but not necessarily worth breaking the bank on. I understand why Minny did it, but contracts like these usually do franchises more harm than good.

A 8 year contract to a catcher doesn’t sound good tome.

Seriously, RBIs???

You’re in the wrong place for that argument.

Mauer has consistently been one of the top hitting catchers in the league with good defense to top it off. Last season, he finally added legitimate power to that .400+ OBP he could be counted on for. He wasn’t just the top hitting catcher, he was one of the best hitters in baseball. And when you consider the defensive position he plays and how good he is there, he’s worth being paid like a superstar.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Oh spare me...

RBIs are ridiculous to mention, but OBP isn’t? Classic “your stat is irrelevant, but mine isn’t” argument. Anyhow, RBIs was just an example. The fact is, in his best season to date he hit for an amazing average but is no where near a Triple Crown monster on offense. Sorry, but I think people give him WAAAYYY to big of a boost for being a catcher.

by Tex34 on Mar 22, 2010 8:57 PM CDT up reply actions

OBP actually tells you something about the skill of a player

RBIs does not. That’s why “your stat is irrelevant, but mine isn’t”.

8 year's is always risky, but you're selling Mighty Joe a little short there, imo.

Fangraphs:

Mauer was worth an incredible eight wins last year even without any credit for his defense, which most regard as above average.

Yah, that’s a spicy meatball.

Anytime you have a guy in position like this you’re always gonna have to give him more years than you’re comfortable with, that’s just the nature of the beast.

You just have to accept that if you wanna sign a superstar in his prime to a long term contract you’re gonna end up having to commit to paying him those superstar dollars well into the time when you’d expect him to no longer be worth superstar dollars.

Catcher’s especially dicey, of course, but if he can mirror Victor Martinez’s usage and stay behind the plate for 80-100 games into his 30’s, with the rest coming at 1b/DH, he should remain a good player, imo.

Plus, you have to consider that he essentially had Minny backed into a corner.

They HAD to sign this guy.

He’s their Face in the way the Rangers wish MY was, a homegrown super star who seems to foster almost universal love on and off the field.

For them to let him walk right after they opened a brand new baseball palace (that I’m assuming the public at least helped to pay for) would be orginizational suicide, imo.

It's definitely steep.

And from a pure basebal perspective, odds are he’ll never live up to it. Keeping him in Minnesota, for so many reasons, may be worth overpaying him. And if the new owners are willing to eat that money, then it’s no big deal.

I’ll be surprised if it doesn’t tie there hands for a while, though.

by philkid3 on Mar 21, 2010 11:04 PM CDT up reply actions

think of the lost revenue prevented by this signing

Why else would you go to a Twins game? Does scrappy sell?

A must-signing for them and at a relative discount to what he’ll get on the open market.

I agree with it being something the Twins had to do.

But to a catcher that has already had back problems, 8 years is a long time.

V-Mart... if you consider him a catcher.

If I was contending and had some cash to burn I could see throwing him a 2 year deal with an option.

Benjie Molina should be available to be fat for any team willing to pay him, as well.

The FA catching class is almost always gonna be ugly, though.

Catcher don’t age well.

What a novel concept!

When the Twins have a HOF player on the doorstep of his prime, they don’t piss him off with their own incompetence nor do they make him an offer $ 40 million below market value.

I'm most curious what the Cards

offer Pujols.

About the only big market team with a glaring need at 1B right now are the NY Mets although the Cubs might be players because they’re going to let Lee go.

Well the Cards will know

if Pujols in interested in staying. If he counteroffers and negotiates, like Mauer and his agent did, he is interested in staying. If he declines all offers without a counteroffer, like Teixeira did, he will be interested in testing Free Agency, like Teixeira was.

I think Tex became fairly disgusted with this organization

when he saw the Hicks strategy after 2004 (put all that new found “financial flexibility” in his pockets) coupled with all the painful struggles of the new GM. Tex wasn’t going to spend a HOF career with a team that didn’t give a damn about winning.

When they brought him an offer so far under market value (that we’ve been assured they wanted him to sign although that kinda screws up the vaunted and much ballyhooed “5 Step Plan” of JD) two weeks before the trade deadline, it was obvious this relationship was not going to work.

you are a complete idiot.

I also think that Scott Boras advises his clients to go to FA because you can get more money doing that.

But mostly I think you’re a complete idiot.

So you think Tex was happy playing for the Rangers

and ecstatic about the strategy Tom Hicks was using?

If the Rangers were truly serious about signing Tex they wouldn’t have made him an offer $ 40 million below his market value.
