No way Font is a better prospect than these guys right now. I’d trade him in a second for any of them.

From a fantasy perspective it makes some sense if you're sold on him being a closer down the line.

I don't see how
anyone could project his value as greater than Teheran’s, for example, either way. If you’re buying into the raw arm/stuff, Teheran can either be a better closer or a more valuable starter. But whatever, go Font.
by Brett Perryman on Mar 28, 2010 7:07 AM CDT up reply actions
I said "some" sense. Just trying to make the point that what we look for in prospects is a very different criteria than what we look for in prospects from a fantasy perspective.
All prospect lists are a blend of short-term, medium-term, and long-term potential. I also try to consider both fantasy and “real life” baseball in mind when doing these lists. As a result, this list looks different than if I was looking solely at pure baseball ability or if I was focused entirely on fantasy value. It is a hybrid.
You have to keep the purpose of the list in mind is what I was trying to make, Z-Cakes.
BTW, is Teheran really that much better stuff-wise than Font? They sound pretty comparable to me in that regard, with Font maybe even having the present edge, but Teheran having some projectability on his side cause he’s 9 months younger and less physically mature. Perhaps he feels Font’s arsenal will play up as a closer, a la Broxton/Papelbon etc.
Also, Teheran’s likely a lot further away due to the fact that it takes more likely to be developed as a starter, whereas if Font was turned into a closer I think he’d be on the fast track pretty quickly… and in most types of fantasy leagues proximity matters a lot more than than it would to someone like BA, who rank the prospects strictly on who’s “better”, not who’s more valuable for fantasy.

im a HUGE fan of tehran
picked him up in multiple keepers last year :)
Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

minor league staffs - forum fodder
I’m not wedded to any of these guesses if someone wants to try changing my mind.
[funny – I’m more confident about the lower minors than I am the upper.]
No Neil Ramirez?
He and Bell are the two guys I have in rotations, but then I have six guys in Hickory, so Bell probably doesn’t even count. It also seems harsh to take Bleier out of a starting role, but that Bakersfield rotation is the hardest one to project, to me. You have guys like Font and Wieland repeating, you don’t have Ramirez anywhere, and you have Gomez in AA, and there are still six pretty good High A candidates. Hunter, Poveda and Gutierrez (and Hurley, though that was expected) all being out certainly cleared things up a good deal for the upper levels. There would have been some tough calls with those three active.
If Scheppers pitches just two-ish innings, Roark or maybe even Beltre could slot in there as the 5/6, eh?

Couldn't find room for Tim Murphy either.
But if his FB is really mid-80’s I don’t know if he deserves it. High draft pick tho’.
due to minor injuries or to work on things.

Wilmer Font sounds like he might need some more time to reign in his c/c.
Maybe they hold him back a few weeks.

by Brett Perryman on Mar 27, 2010 7:23 PM CDT up reply actions
Reports seem to indicate he's competent and has good sink.
He should handle it okay – like Reed or Roark did.
I can’t find any room for Bell at Hickory. I’m assuming Wieland starts there after reading the KLaw review, but the org seems to love him so he could start at BAK I ’spose.
NeRa is getting some great reviews but I can’t find room for him either. Tandem pairs might be a necessity.
JC sez Brigham looks like a AA guy in Surprise, but I figure he’ll start out in BAK. Never know tho’.
I can’t believe they’ll start Kirkman in AA while a spare like Ballard or Lizard gets a turn in AAA. I’m hoping that changes before long. I figure Beltre for the bullpen, but he could start. I figure someone like Gomez or Bleier will tandem with Scheppers – with the other guy starting. DGut will slide into the AA roto June 1st – so whoever’s not on their game is gonna get bumped there.
I could see Moscoso getting moved to the pen to see if he can shut late AAA innings down while in reserve of the Ranger bullen. Until we hear different I figure he’s a roto guy.
For my taste
you bump Doyle to the pen for Ramirez if he looks ready for Bakersfield. Coming into ST, I had Bleier in AA, Wieland, Gomez, Brigham and Ramirez all in A+ (no idea how the numbers were going to work out, though), and Font and Bell in A. With Ramirez looking good, I can’t imagine that they won’t find a rotation spot somewhere for him.
I can see Bell not making the opening day rotation for Hickory, but if not, I have to think they’ll get him in there pretty quickly.
I know what’s been said about Brigham, but given that he’s only pitched in Hickory, and given how his last season finished, it’s hard for me to believe that they’re going to skip a level with him. Even with the year off, if he starts well and moves to AA at midseason, he’s still 22 and right on target.
by Brett Perryman on Mar 27, 2010 8:24 PM CDT up reply actions
Heck - even Ryan freakin' Tatusko might sneak some starts in somewhere.
And Schlact will be back in a few weeks on rehab somewhere.
I can’t believe they’d start NeRa at BAK. Sit up and take notice if they do – as Tron’s haid asplodes. Sounds like Erlin could handle HIC, but they get to avoid that problem by protecting his IP totals in extended for a few weeks. Starting Ross in extended might relieve some pressure – or NeRa. But, ya know, tandem pairs at HIC the first coupla months would allow more arms and keep the IP totals from accruing too fast. Bet they do that.
Yeah, they did that previously, though this should be a little older group than that was. Has to be some combination of that and holding some back for a bit. There are always quick casualties anyway.
On Ramirez, the only thing I’d say, and I certainly wouldn’t bet that he would go to A+ or anything, but I really don’t think they hone in on certain things like we do. His line from last year looks ugly because of the walks and the K/BB specifically, but he wasn’t hit particularly hard, and if he looks like he can command his fastball, they may conclude that he’s ready. Having said that, they do sort of ask these guys to win spots, and even with a good spring, given that a bunch of these other guys are fairly legitimate prospects themselves, it’s probably a little hard to rationalize how he would actually beat 3-4 of them out.
by Brett Perryman on Mar 27, 2010 9:11 PM CDT up reply actions
I'm sure
Pretty polished group this year, though, relatively speaking. Ross, Tullis and Thompson all put in full seasons at the advanced short season level, Font, Ramirez and Wieland would be repeating, we’ve obviously had all of the talk about how polished Erlin looks, and if Bell is there you’re talking about a guy who did well against university competition last summer. They had all of those wild horses there last year, I think six 17 and 18 year olds, plus guys like Ramirez, Castillo and Brigham trying to make big adjustments.

Marteen seems low to me
But I have him as top 10 prospect, and my optimism cannot be contained (Though it can be quantified and explained. Rather easily).
Scheppers being in the 20s is telling. I guess Sickels liked what he saw and is buying the hype.
Sidenote… Bumgarner in the teens? Ick. Not with that velocity. He’s super-Blake Beavan. That doesn’t count for much.

I gotta wonder what prompted the 2012 projection, though, aside from merely his age. The dude held his own at AA last year.

roster projections
I’ve got system-wide roster projections as well over at M&M…
Posted this comment on your site, but I'm not sure if it ate it or if it just takes time (or approval) for comments to post.
Nice stuff as usual, Goyo.
Can’t disagree too much with any of your projections.
Some q’s/comments:
1) I really hope they find a way to get Matt Thompson into the Hickory rotation sooner rather than later, even if it’s as a tandem starter with one of the other Spokane graduates to start. Love his potential.
2) Any chance they move Hogan to AA, DiFaziGod to A+ and finally let Macumba be a starter this year in Hickory? It’d be nice to see him not have to caddy for another old-for-the-league college catcher with limited ceiling this year and get some actual “playing time”.
3) Any word from camp on Easy Eddy Escobar or Rick Alvarez and how they’ve looked and what the plan is for ‘em this year? I haven’t heard anything, but I might’ve just missed it. Are they Spokane for sure, or is there a chance either of ’em sees Hickory at some point this year?
4) Is Lemon for sure slated for Frisco? I was hoping he’d play his way into an OKC assignment after taking the entire AFL down to MF’ing Chinatown this off-season. Either way I hope they continue to give him reps at SS whereever he starts. I think he’s an eventual 2b down the line, too, but I don’t want to cede anything when it comes to his development, especially not for Renny Osuna, who I don’t think will ever hit anywhere near enough to even be a UIF in the bigs.
5) Profar… I dunno. I know The Newberg is an excitable fella and all, but the Baseball America profile was basically one long orgasm, too. I had him and Sardinas ranked pretty close before reading BA’s report and then kinda went, “Uh, okay…” and moved Profar up into the top 10. I’m worried we (by which I mean ranger fans in general) were too quick to diefy him after his hype machine got turned up to 11 in the late summer/early fall, and now I’m worried we may be letting ourselves knee-jerk a little too hard back in the other direction. The “He might even start the season in Hickory, you guys!” stuff does seem pretty hilarious in retrospect, though.
6) Finally… Ugh. That Hickory offense could be brutal. Here’s hoping either Matt West or Clark Murphy actually hits this year. And here’s saying that they won’t. Ugh…

Yo DT
Good stuff. I’m going to post these questions as a regular entry at M&M and answer them there as soon as I can. Blogger has a size limit on comments so this one probably blew a gasket (you would have to post it as 2 comment entries, but it usually gives a warning if its too large to post).
Just a heads up in case you don’t know, that Cole sometimes posts free articles, interviews and camp news over at lonestardugout so it is worth an occasional looksee if you don’t want to pony up. And you’re surely aware of JParks’ great camp posts over at the BBTIA facebook site right? Prospect Gold I tell you, Prospect Gold…
Holy shit... No, I had no idea about that gloppy facebook goodness. WOW.
I feel like I need the hooker to un-cuff me so I can have a cigarette after reading through that. Handsome McMexico has really outdone himself with that treasure trove.
Love the reports on Melo, Rick Alvarez, and especially Brigham.
I saw Brigham pitch last year and came away feeling like my Meh bone might’ve suffered permanent damage due to the amazing amount of stress his unimpressiveness put it through that night. But that’s the danger of judging dudes off one appearance, especially when you know nothing about scouting, like me.
Look forward to the site writeup.

By my quick count, there are as many Rangers prospects on that list as the rest of the division combined. I like that. I’m a Rangers fan; I’ll take what I can get, for now.

Don’t remember reading about him this spring.
