We can only sign 1 FA for more than $5.8 million.

No cap this year.
Right?
"I don't condone steroids or any other type of growth hormones or anything else, but I could care less, and, for the most part, I don't think the fans give a (bleep). The people that care about it are the people that probably don't like baseball," - Jim Leyland
Have you read the rules, though?
The Cowboys, along with the other final 8 teams in the playoffs, have alot of restrictions in signing free agents. They’re pretty hancuffed.
Only a little bit.
They’ll still be able to make some noise. That $3.7 million dollar tender can still get you quite a bit. Especially when you factor in that that number can go up by 30% in each year of the contract. See Chris Canty’s contract he signed with the Giants. The Cowboys won’t be as handcuffed as people think, they just won’t be able to go completely apeshit.
Ready for some baseball.
It's more a question of...
…what spots can they legitimately upgrade? Seems like they would have to cut a guy to sign a big name player- not just for finances, but for playing time. If you want Rolle, Hamlin or Sensi has to go. If you want Dansby, then James or Brooking (no!) have to go.
If Brad Pitt is playing Beane who do you want playing you?
JD: Eddie Guardado.

It's pretty much understood that everybody wants Hamlin gone.
I am praying we cut him, actually. Really the only positions that need upgrading are the O-line, Free Safety, and Wide Receiver. Jerry is being pretty bullish on Roy though, so I don’t see that one happening. Still, that’s another great thing about the uncapped year. You can use it to shed bad contracts.
Ready for some baseball.
Yeah, but look at last year.
This defense wasn’t as good without Hamlin in there. I think he brings more from a leadership standpoint, especially on the field in the secondary, than he does playing the position of FS. I agree that it’s the easiest place to upgrade because of the lack of turnovers, but there’s more to the position than just that.
I still think Roy could work out of the team, just as a No. 2 unfortunately. The O-line needs to be reinforced, but the emergence of Free makes that less of an issue. They need a better backup C, theoretically a draft pick who could fill in for Kosier this year and be ready to take over for Gurode in the future.
So that narrows it down to DE or S…which is interesting considering the tenders. Looks like one of Bowen or Spears is getting traded.

They weren't as good without Hamlin, sure.
But that’s not saying much, because all of the backups at FS are so piss poor. We need to be getting more out of that position. There is a huge hole back there. We need somebody who can spread the field, make plays, and not let anybody get behind him. Hamlin is just not that guy.
Ready for some baseball.
Panthers cut Delhomme.
I thought that was the obvious move. Matt Moore has shown enough to get a shot.
and Vick will be their opening day starter
there is no way Steve Smith will stick around quietly with Matt Moore as the starting QB

Figured I’d go for the joke instead of calling him a motherfucking douchebag who got off easy- 2 years in prison and he gets to go back to the NFL?

“I just talked to Antrell Rolle!!” Dockett tweeted regarding his longtime teammate. “And I already know what’s about to happen, man I’m speechless I’m going to Bed. I’m done with twitter BYE!”
Apparently he was at the Lakers-Heat game in Miami…
Google News Search...
…suggests the NYGiants are going to offer him a huge deal. That would suck…Rolle is really good, though he can take too many risks from time to time. Still, adding Rolle to a fully, healthy Giants secondary would make them pretty darn good. I was holding out some small hope he’d sign with the Cowboys…this is basically worst case scenario. I guess I can hope he signs for way too much money…
I’d much, much rather he sign with the Bears or Dolphins.

by GhettoBear04 on Mar 4, 2010 11:42 PM CST up reply actions
We can't sign him.
The Cowboys are both limited and liberated by the uncapped rules. Because they’re a “Final Eight” team, they can sign only one unrestricted free agent to a starting salary of at least $5.81 million and an unlimited group at less than $3.86 million.
Yup.
He could be the one big sign. But as I pointed out above, it would involve getting rid of one of our current safeties. From a marginal gain standpoint, I’m not sure it’s worth it. From the standpoint of Jerry Jones has really mother effing deep pockets, why not?
I just don’t want Rolle to end up in the division if we can’t get him. Come on Miami!

Also...
…none of the Cowboys moves last year were of the blockbuster variety, but you saw how big a difference Sensi and Brooking made.
I mentioned it below, but getting Williams in here as a backup NT to Ratliff for the $3.8 million plus 30% increases over the next year or two would be a fantastic move for a guy who’s going to be transitioning into more of a time-share role anyways.

Sorry.
Jamal Williams. One of the better 3-4 NT’s of the decade. Older though, I don’t think you’d want him as your starter…fortunately the Cowboys already have an All-Pro NT.
Totally different style though, Williams is the big huge space eater that anchored their run defense (which is part of the reason why the SD run defense tanked last year).

And they don't think he can play more than 30 snaps/game.
So they didn’t want to pay him $6 million. Which is a rational decision…but you have to wonder how their run defense is going to be next year if they don’t start adding players instead of subtracting.

…Despite the fact that Marcus Spears played reasonably well as the starting defensive end in 2010, his tender offer ($1.226 million) is lower than two backup defensive ends, Jason Hatcher and Stephen Bowen. Their offers were roughly $500,000 higher than Spears’.
It’s almost like Jones is daring a team (Dolphins?) to sign Spears to an offer sheet. And just to be clear, the Cowboys would only receive second-round compensation for Spears, a former first-round selection…
I'll take a 2nd rounder for Spears.
I’d be happy.
by TooLegitToQuit on Mar 4, 2010 11:11 PM CST via mobile up reply actions
Definitely.
Bowen and Hatchers are far from awful as emergency plans and they could always address it with their first round pick, where there seems to be a grouping of 3-4 DE’s.
Also, the safeties that I’m interested in (the non-Berry/Thomas ones) are likely to be picked in that mid 2nd round range that the Cowboys would currently have to trade up to get.

Really?
I haven’t heard this? If so, then I hope they figure out some way to get Thomas. Or maybe they go after Rolle? Hmm…not sure. They could probably get Rolle for how much Hamlin is costing them (or a little more).
I’m not sure they want to trade up to where they would need to in order to get Thomas and I’m not sure the upper/mid 2nd round guys would be ready to step in right away. With Michael Hamlin (last year’s draft) being slotted in as backup SS, I’m not sure I’d want to start the season with a competition between Ball and whoever they draft.
That’s just odd…as much as Hamlin was lacking in the interception department, the secondary was much better when he was in there.

Michael Lombardi had this to say about it...
Routt is the Raiders’ latest lottery winner. The Raiders tendered their backup corner a first and third tender, which was more than five times what he made last year. This completely irrational and illogical behavior tells the tale of what’s wrong with the Raiders. Why would they even think a team in the NFL would take Routt from them for his original draft position, which was a second-round pick? (Seriously, I got at least 10 texts yesterday from former Raiders coaches laughing about the tender.)

Plus there’s the Wade connection, so that’s nice.
Wonder if they had good feelers on Jamal before putting the lower tender on Spears. I know they play different spots, but Spears stayed in the backup NT discussion for a long time for some reason, and bring in Williams would allow Rats to move over to DE part-time- it adds up a little.
I’d certainly take a second and Jamal Williams for Spears (although it’s more likely we negotiate a trade with whoever- the Dolphins- would want him for a lower pick, in my estimation.)

Kicker
Can anyone answer this for me- why do football teams need separate players to kick off, kick field goals, and punt?
Is kicking so specialized that it’s not possible to develop someone to handle all three duties? Just seems like if you had one guy to do all the kicking stuff, that would free up an extra roster spot or two that you could use for added depth elsewhere.
"Jesus, Spanish- our jobs aren't enough, now you want our words?"
-- Sterling Archer
they had buhler last year
because of the effect he could put on the field position game (clearly worked out well)
i believe mcbriar has kicked for the cowboys in the past (long FG maybe a couple of years ago?)
very few teams roll with 3 kickers — but the question is…is it worth it to have an extra special teams guy/3rd string LB over a FG kicker?

Most teams have...
…one guy for field goals and kicking off. There is one guy who tried to fill all 3 roles (I think for the Falcons last year or the year before?) recently, but generally punting is considered to be very different from kicking so 2 guys are needed. I’m guessing it has to do with a flexibility vs leg strength thing, but I could be wrong.
The Cowboys had separate field goal and kick off guys last year because they were truly terrible on getting touchbacks the year before, so they drafted a guy specifically for kickoffs. It’s kind of a more progressive view of things as special teams in football is probably like defense in baseball. Still, the only way they could make it fit for the roster limits was that Buehler (the kickoff specialist) is also quite athletic and plays on the other special teams units (he’s quite fast).

this seems like an odd question
with the simple answer being specialization is obviously better and you have to weigh that against roster spots
they would be stupid not to trade 1 of their current 3
and kolb can def step in for mcnabb at a lot lower cost
now theres a guy i wouldnt mind QBing the cowboys (kolb) — id be interested to see if they trade kolb and roll with mcnabb/vick next year.
if im out there and need a QB and arent sold on anyone outside of the top 2 QBs id jump ALL over kolb.

I think Romo has room to improve...
…but is rapidly approaching what he is. He’s going to have 2-3 bad games a year, but so is everyone outside the top 3/4. I think he’s firmly in the next tier with Rodgers, Roethlishamburgler, Favre, Warner, McNabb, and maybe Cutler (though he probably fell out of this tier after last year) with Ryan and possibly Flacco on the come.
I’m hoping he continues his development to get to the Rivers level, but I’m not sure he’ll get there. Certainly he’s good enough to win a SB with, though…

Echoing above thoughts, I like what Detroit is doing. I can’t for the life of me figure out what the Texans are doing as they could be legit contenders if they splurged this offseason with their needs matching up well with available free agents. If they added Rolle, Vandenbosch, and Mawae (shorter term), and a 1st round CB and 2nd round RB, they could probably hit 11 wins next year.

Jared Gaither anyone?
via rotoworld
After assigning him just a first-round tender, the Ravens are believed to be willing to move restricted free agent LT Jared Gaither.
Gaither would’ve gotten the first- and third-round tender if the Ravens were truly intent on keeping him. The Ravens want to move Michael Oher to left tackle. The Baltimore Sun suggests four possible destinations for Gaither: San Francisco, Indianapolis, Dallas, and Seattle. Teams targeting Gaither could probably work out a deal for less than the first-round pick
Unless of course we could work out a trade for something slightly less.
But if they would only take the first rounder for him I’d still do it.
Ready for some baseball.
Yep.
Nevermind that there are reports that interested teams might be able to work out a trade for something less than a first, which would allow us to maybe pick up somebody like Earl Thomas, Mike Iupati, or Golden Tate (depending on what else we decide to do in the draft or FA). The fact is, if they don’t try to make a play for a FS in the first then Gaither is a better option than any O-lineman that will be available at 27 when we pick.
It really is a no brainer. We could possibly work out a trade and get him for less than a first, go sign O.J. Atogwe from the Rams and not have to surrender any picks to do so, and use our first rounder on Golden Tate. We just upgraded OT, FS, and WR, and it cost us maybe a 2nd and a 4th or something like that. Even if we did have to give up a first for him then we could still just go sign Atogwe, and use our 2nd rounder on another position of need such as OG, DE, KR/PR, whatever. I really like this idea, and I sincerely hope this is the way they decide to go, but you never know what Jerry is going to do.
Ready for some baseball.
2nd and a 4th for Gaither is what I meant.
The first rounder still gets spent on whoever they decide to take there. You get my point though.

he’s still a young, power back who’s an above average YPR guy and can catch the ball out of the backfield. With his knack of getting in the endzone, and his still pretty good RB skills…i think a team will give up more than a 4 for him…
"Clearly, I've been wrong. VY is awesome." - AJM
Maybe a 3, but even then...
…I don’t think so. Even if he wasn’t the bruising style back who seem to wear down quicker than an LdT/Chester Taylor/Westbrook type who gets to play out in the flats and avoid big hits more, he still has a decent-sized contract.
Why would a team give up a 3rd and pay him when they could just draft a Ryan Matthews, Ben Tate, etc in the 2nd (or someone else later) and get a young back for the duration of their effectiveness at a cheap price?

Yeah, I disagree
Vanden Bosch, Williams, and Suh or McCoy makes their line pretty respectable, possibly scary. I don’t know why he’s fretting over a 6th rounder for Williams who was a pretty good player 2 years ago. Michael Lombardi liked the deal, saying Williams just didn’t fit the schemes the Browns ran.
?????
That’s odd. I know Vanden Bosch had a bad year last year, but would it really be that surprising if he weren’t significantly better this year? I think the move for Williams is also good, falling into the low-risk, nice-reward category. Sure, they probably paid Burleson a little too much, but he’s fine as a No. 2 receiver, especially considering the arm strength of Stafford, the reduced coverage he’ll see playing across from Megatron, and that he may actually be their 3rd receiving option depending on how Pettigrew heals.
Throw in a Suh or McCoy plus the rest of what I assume will be a decent draft class considering their position and performance last year, and I think the Lions will be respectable next year. Tough division though…

Exactly.

Vanden Bosch and Burleson are quality players, although they were overpaid by a bit. Corey Williams and Chris Houston are two additions with upside who cost very little. Call me crazy, but I could easily see the Lions being respectable next year.

…Kiper has us getting Earl Thomas and McShay OT Charles Brown from USC
Kiper: At the combine, Thomas answered questions I had raised about his size. Although the Boys could use a tackle, if a top one isn’t available here, the Texas product is a great fit for the Cowboys as a playmaker with cover skills at the safety position.
McShay: Brown is a bit of a reach here, but his size and athletic ability give him the potential to develop into starting left tackle. With Flozell Adams on the downside of his career, Brown gives the Cowboys an insurance policy at the position.
McShay is a moron

Obviously, I like Thomas. My ranking of somewhat unreasonable to reasonable picks is probably Thomas, Iupati, Pouncey, O’Drick for the first round right now. Not that it means a whole lot…
I just don’t see Thomas falling to us, especially with Philly sitting a few spots above us. I did think that Mays to CIncy was an interesting choice, not sure I had seen that anywhere else, but I could see him filling Roy Williams (S) recently vacated role pretty quickly there. Abilene Christian OT Tony Washington reportedly had sex with his 15-year-old biological sister when he was 16, and is a registered sex offender.
It’s believed the sexual act, which occurred in May 2003, was consensual. “I made a mistake at the age of 16, and for that, I am deeply sorry,” he said in a statement. “I will not try and excuse or justify anything.” Washington, who might be a first-round prospect based on size, length, and athleticism alone, was a big recruit at LSU in 2005. He originally received five years’ probation and no jail time. Washington is reportedly now on good terms with the sister.

So...Earl Thomas pick guessing.
Jacksonville becomes more likely with the Kampman signing since they don’t need a DE now. Seems a bit high for Thomas though…
NYGiants are out with the Rolle signing. Arizona’s out because of the Rhodes trade. Houston seemed like a possibility to me, but their inability to address their holes at RB or CB through free agency suggest that one of their first two picks will go there. That seems to be the consensus from the local radio guys, too. Philly is probably out now that they’ve signed Marlin Jackson to go with Mikell, Demps and Macho Harris. Some had guessed Baltimore would think safety as a precaution for Ed Reed’s injury history, but it seems unlikely they would use a first on that and what I’m reading suggests that they will focus on CB and TE for the first pick.
So who’s left? SF has two picks, but has other needs (RT and OLB). Pittsburgh just resigned Clark. The Dolphins are a definite possibility. They need an NT more with Ferguson suspended the first 8 games, but I’m not sure if Parcells would take a NT with the first pick. So they’re probably the biggest risk. Maybe Atlanta now that they’ve poured money into CB?
