There are no excuses to be made for Blalock's terrible OBP (and he paid the penalty by having to sign a minor league deal).

I think that was more about approach than anything else and trying to do too much. I wanna say his career OBP going into last year was around .338 so it’s not something he’s struggled with throughout his career.

As a DH alone, playing 20 games or so a month, he was much more effective than he was as an every day 1B.

Those boys in Tampa are pretty sharp and they’ll figure out how to use Hank F properly if he still has something and if his life’s in order.

329 but buoyed up by '03/'04

(and some SSS in ’07, but to a lesser extent).

I can agree there, Hankles showed two extremely promising years but the degradation from there has been pretty shocking. Not saying he can’t be a decent DH for them (especially if they’re just looking for a masher, not an all around hitter- or if there’s some magic ‘make a guy hit line drives and redevelop his eye’ dust in Tampa) but he’s in Comeback Player of the Year territory.

Are you clarifying your stance on Hankles as JD screwed him by making him an everyday 1B? I thought you based your victory in the Imaginary War of June 2009 on him playing 1B and the team having a winning record….

We're trying to heal at LSB but since you asked...

I think JD fucked up every facet of the Davis / Hank F issue last season as bad as any GM has ever fucked up anything and it was a big reason we stayed home in October.

Hank F was very usable in 3 of the first 4 months of the season but tended to blow very hot and very cold. We really needed somebody who was RH and could play 1B because Hank showed all the signs of somebody who needed a few days off, especially against the tough leftys.

One of the great mysteries from last year happened in that early September game v Toronto, wanna say it was the day after the DH when Young was hurt. The Mensa moved Davis to 3B and put Hank F into the game (at 1B) after riding pine for a week and he had a big game.

Afterwards, The Mensa went very public in saying that Hank F was still a part-time player which seemed to be an odd reaction. Three days later in a true what the fuck are they doing moment, they ran Salty out there as DH although he hadn’t played in a month.

The offense collapsed but they were adamant that Hank F wasn’t going to be called on to do anything but sit on the bench. At the lowest moment (one run in 5 games and 7.5 back with two weeks left), they go running back to Hank F who leads them to a W over LAAA. The Mensa then tells us Hank F is going to play every day. What the fuck?

Very strange.

There's plenty of data points and conjecture there

But you didn’t answer my question. You said you think Hankles would do better as a part time DH than he was as an everyday 1B, but you trumpet his time as an everyday 1B as evidence that you won the Great War.

Which one is it?

I’m very confuzzled.

Again, we're in the midst of healing and you want to rip open the barely healed scab. It's pretty simple...

Davis was somehow able to retain his job after June 1 and Hank F was put in a heavy platoon. Davis was in or around another one of his painful droughts at this time… a 3 for 44 with 24Ks.

The Rangers responded to this by going 11-15 and having one of the worst months of offense in the history of the of the organization.

This past off-season we heard how the unspoken Thing in The Room was the fact that Davis was still allowed to be on the team even though he was drowning in front of the world.

The Mensa & JD swear we had to have his “defense” although the sonofabitch had 114K’s in 277 plate appearances to go along with his .256 OBP.

On the glorious evening of July 1, Hank F seized the moment with the biggest hit of the year and the Rangers rode the momentum to a 28-19 record.

Davis gets called up to play every day, Hank F is buried and the chemistry in the room goes awry. The Rangers go 18-21 the rest of the season, punctuated with a 1 run in 5 game streak during the most important time of year.

Now, let yourself heal.

So, he shouldn't be an everyday 1B because he's not a good everyday 1B

But we had a winning record while he was an everyday 1B, so you won, even though he’s bad when he’s an everyday 1B?

Because you said a lot of stuff there, but none of it answers my question.

If he's going to be on your team, the best place

to use him successfully would appear to be as a DH who plays 20 games a month.

That’s a heady complement to our GM, that he can build a team capable of winning while one of the everyday players was playing far out of his optimal zone.

But it was the GM's inability

to handle the Davis / Hank F problem properly at almost every level all season that hung like a cloud and that issue killed This Thing at the the most important time of year.

With the pitching staff dramatically improved and a good defense in place, JD didn’t need to do much last year…just get this problem squared away but he ended up shitting his pants (again).

Yeah, it was a black mark that Hank was playing 1B, I'm glad we agree on that

But you’ve said several times that since we won while Hank was playing there, that’s indicative of something important- and since you’ve now admitted that playing Hank at 1B everyday was a bad decision, we have to look at the whole picture- which is that the team was able to win with a terrible, terrible firstbaseman. That’s a huge compliment to the GM.

So the huge compliment overrules the minor negative mark.

Tell me where I’m missing out on your logic.

You're viewing it as a Lewinsky, Keynes.

You’d also applaud JD for somehow guiding this team to 75 wins in 2007 despite giving The Sosa 315 plate appearances v RH pitching.

If that Davis / Blalock situation had been handled more competently, we wouldn’t have been out of the race in mid September.

In fact, I was a ‘When we gon’ git sum peechin?’ rube back in those days, but that’s not germane to the conversation. I’m reading that you’re very proud of the record of the team while a player that you admit was not good at his job was playing a key role- which indicates that the rest of the team must have been very good- which indicates it was a good roster- which is indicative of a good GM.

Nah, we obviously got crappy production from both

And paying 6 million dollars for a 277 OBP from a DH/1B was a silly waste of cash.

Of course, the point could be made that had Smoak signed immediately after being drafted, he would have been ready to step in when Davis was sent down, so the situation was largely due to Selig’s draft signing rules and silliness,

Likewise, had Maxie not been Venzuela’d and injured he might have been a an excellent choice to come in and fill the gap, so while there were options in the system, they weren’t ready for faults outside the control of the GM.

So, take the good with the bad, I suppose.

A gross oversimplification, but yeah, that wasn't a bright spot

CD was the primary option, and he sucked.

Hank was the primary fallback, and he sucked.

First base sucked. That’s not good. Though, in a more perfect world (one where Selig isn’t doing his damnedest to keep draft bonuses down) Smoak might have been developmentally ready (if he had started in Hi-A immediately after being drafted, then started ’09 in AA or AAA) or Max might not have had the wrist injuries. As it were, options A, B, C, and D were all bad, for different reasons.

Now the question is between CD, Smoak, Moreland, Max, Matt Brown, and the waiver wire/trade market, can we find a league average offensive 1B this year?

Just to stick my nose in

I think that Daniels had very little to do with the Davis / Blalock situation last year. It was all Washington. Washington says who to play, and who to sit, who to bring up, and who to bench. Washington who goes to Daniels and says, “Davis has struggled so much he needs a break and to get out of town for a while.” Washington who goes to Daniels and says, “Hank is struggling now at first, is Davis ready to come back? (especially since Hank’s defense blows).”

So, save your anger for Washington and not Daniels. Also, its not like the team had much choice. Were they going to bring up Emerson Frostad? push Smoak up despite his struggles with AAA? Bring up Royce Huffman or Nate Gold or Chad Tracy? Pluck Moreland from Bakersfield? Ramirez in the midst of his slumps? Try and get someone off the waiver wire? Maybe trade prospects for a hitter like Ryan Garko?

All of these ideas had upside and downside.

Oh my god! What can it be? We're all doomed! Who's flying this thing?

Davis ran hot and cold too.

Started the season 1 for 22, then went .283/.330/.626 over the next month (April 13 to May 15) then went 3 for 48 (through June 2nd) then went .303/.361/.455 over his next 10 games, then 2 for 23, then 6 for 11, then finally 2 for 22 before his demotion.

Stripping the vitriol away (which I shouldn’t have to do, and is why most people ignore you JW) The Rangers offensive tanking in June was a) not Davis’ fault, and b) not because Blalock was platooned. Blalock himself hit only .179 for the month, so whatever he was supposed to be doing, wasn’t working. Davis’ defense kept him in the league past July 1st to July 5th. Blalock’s 4 homers between the first and third of July tricked the team into thinking he should be the everyday first baseman, and he was fine for most of July. He tanked in August though, and since his defensive value was non-existant, and Davis was raking at AAA (mostly playing third because Smoak was playing first), Davis was re-summoned and Hank gets benched.

If there was a chemistry problem when Hank was benched, it was caused by Hank. And if he had a problem being benched, he should have been released.

Oh my god! What can it be? We're all doomed! Who's flying this thing?

Since your own hypothesis on Hank's decline is an excess of drink,

it seems that you have to consider management taking in factors that we’ll never know. I don’t think Washington is a great manager, but I suspect that some of his seemingly erratic and ill-founded statements come from an unwillingness to discuss his true motives. He’s more likely to say “I had a gut feeling” than “I could smell the hops from across the locker room and over my freshly lit smoke.”

I don’t know if the above is true or not. I’m just saying that there are often reasons for sub-optimal decisions that have more to do with no good options and a desire to keep certain factors confidential.

Doesn’t this go against everything you’ve said about Hank should have been playing everyday instead of being “platooned” last year?

Or did you just say you didn’t mind an inneffective Hank because it would get rid of Davis, who is younger and has a future with the club unlike Blalock last year.

He definitely carried This Thing

during the first two weeks of July and then tapered off the rest of month (but still had some key hits). From July 1 to August 10 or so, he led This Thing in HR & RBI.

I think he’s a good candidate to rebound because he never appeared to be drowning. His big problem was the OBP, that he appeared to be pressing and that he really needed some time off when they were going against tough leftys like Lester.

What is different from last year?

Ultimately the Yankees won the world series and got better this offseason. The Red Sox really improved their defense. The rays signed a bullpen guy and blalock to a minor league deal.

The only case you could make is that Wade Davis will be better than Kazmir. That still doesn’t hold water in the East as the Red Sox have Bucch and the Yanks got Vazquez.

Pena & Crawford in contract years (listen closely and you can hear laxtonto shaking his head)

and Zobrist playing every day to go along with a likely rebound year from Upton and then there’s Longoria plus they also addressed the closer thingy.

Yeah, they have some young pitchers with a track record of past success in The Show as well.

It is not unheard of for a team to touch greatness, see the pendelum swing the other way and then suddenly find it.

The Big Red Machine won 102 games in ’70, only 79 games in ’71 and then rebounded and went on a tear for several years in a row.

They have a good manager and an excellent GM who aren’t going to get in their way with incompetence.

He didn't get in the way too much

of a young and talented team. But over at Rays Bay they complain about him just as much as we do about Washington, about his bullpen decisions etc. Tampa had a lot of talent, vastly improved their defense and acquired Garza who had a very good year. There were a lot of reasons that team succeeded. Maddon is no genius manager. If the Rangers win the division this year I don’t think you’ll be giving Washington credit, and I won’t either.

If the GOP had stayed truer to the conservatism of Buckley, rather than going in the direction of Gingrich, Cheney, Palin, and Limbaugh, I might still be a Republican.

But I’m not a Democrat either- I lean very liberal socially, but otherwise, I’m fairly moderate, even conservative on a few issues like gun rights and the death penalty.

.264/.325/.455 The team hit that during the period you mentioned. They also stole 50 bases.

.238/.264/.439 Blalock hit that during the period you mentioned.

Salty hit .194/.284/.361 before getting hurt on August 14th
Kins hit .189/.259/.418 but did steal 8 bases without being caught.
Elvis hit .259/.325/.378 and stole 9 bases but was caught once.
FOTF hit .358/.411/.604 and stole 4 bases
Borbon hit .471/.514/.618 and stole 8 bases being caught once, though he didn’t get regular playing time until August 9th or so
Murphy hit .262/.329/.418
Byrd hit .277/.331/.454
Cruz hit .269/.381/.581 though he missed two weeks.
Jones hit .198/.325/.510
Hambone hit .281/.333/.397

oh, and the pitching allowed an ERA of 3.47 while allowing fewer than a hit per inning.
