KG's Future Shock
Joe Wieland, RHP, Rangers (Low-A Hickory)
The Rangers have one of the best minor-league systems and that’s primarily because of a wealth of impressive young arms. Wieland might not be the best known of them, but he is one of the best…………
Good stuff
Both Goldstein’s and yours. A little surprised that Weiland didn’t check in higher- is that a function of his stuff being pretty mature already, and not having a lot of projection left?

Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!
Lacks elite projection
At least in my opinion. Opinions vary on the projection of his secondary pitches. Some people put his ceiling as a #2 starter. I think he’s solid, but I don’t think his raw stuff is good enough for that projection.
As far as this series goes, Wieland might rank #21, but he’s only a few AOFP points lower than guys in the top 10. He’s a very good prospect.
Good info
Would you say that, though he lacks the projection of guys higher in the rankings, the odds of his reaching his projection are better than many of those guys?

Definitely
I like his chances of reaching a #3/#4 ceiling over arms like Main, Ramirez, and Gutierrez reaching their ceilings as #2/#3s.
This is such a great series Jason...
I’m higher on Wieland than many, but I also know I’m not alone.
I really think this kid could be a solid ML starter.

Thanks
I agree on Wieland. He lacks elite projection, but he has the stuff to develop into a solid major league starter. I talked to one scout that was higher on his change-up than his curve, giving it a future grade of 60. While I disagree with that assessment, I find it promising that a source I respect thinks the pitch has that potential. If all things click, Wieland could exceed expectations and become a top tier prospect.
What I enjoyed reading almost as much
Dustin Ackley, 2B, Mariners (Double-A West Tenn)
So at what point does one get concerned? The second overall pick in last year’s draft, Ackley was just as expected in last year’s Arizona Fall League, spraying balls all over the field, drawing tons of walks, and leaving a debate as to whether or not he’d hit for much in the power department. This year, however, he’s just not hitting at all, and we’re left wondering as to when a slump becomes statistically significant. I could easily brush off a start that had Ackley hitting .200 or so, but we’re talking .111 here, we’re talking 4-for-36 with a double in nine games. Is it indicative of something yet? I don’t know, but I’m certainly not brushing it off.

Meh
way too early in the season to make judgments of any nature for me, and i say the same for our players
I think Ackley will be a stud, and this is just a random slump, but one can certainly hope

Oh, I agree it's soon
enjoyed it nonetheless.
