Breaking News-Feldman Extended
The Rangers have announced a contract extension with right-hander Scott Feldman.
The new deal reworks his contract for 2010, signs him through 2012 and adds a club option for 2013. The right-hander will receive $2.425 million in 2010, $4.4 million in 2011 and $6.5 million in 2012. The Rangers' option for 2013 is worth $9.25 million with a $600,000 buyout.
"We're excited to commit to Scott as a core member of our club for years to come," general manager Jon Daniels said in a statement. "Our goal is to build a championship team around quality players and individuals who work hard to improve themselves, the team and our community. Scott fits with that perfectly."
Feldman, 27, went 17-8 last season, and he will be the Opening Day starter Monday against Toronto.

Wow...
Is Feldman really going to be worth 9 mil in 2013?
It sure would be great if he is, but I have my doubts. Still a pretty good deal for both sides I think.

He was worth $14.9 M last year
using the Fangraphs valuation. Actually, this seems like a nice team-friendly deal with that cheap buyout if he doesn’t do what he looks like he’s capable of.

Not necessarily.
More importantly, while he might actually be worth it, we might, at that point, have an even cheaper in-house choice. Club options are made of awesome.
It’s also a pretty friendly contract to trade if we think we’ve got better in house before ’13.
We might always have cheaper options
with great potential, but you want some consistency in the rotation and a good veteran to anchor the staff while you break some of the young guys in. Feldman may not be the guy, but this contract does show IMO that the team believes he can be that guy. And its a whole lot better to go with an in-house option like Feldman rather than go into FA for that kind of pitcher.

Agreed.
It depends on how reliable we think the cheap replacement is vs. how much more valuable Feldman is than the option year at that point.
He will still only be either 29 or 30 years old
So its possible

2013 is a long time away. We’ve all seen how the market value of similar players ebbs and flows depending on the financial state of the game and supply/demand in the free agent market. While it’s too early to say one way or the other, it seems reasonably likely that it will either be a fair price to pay for him or a bargain, especially if recession fears are in the past and owners are spending wildly ala 2006. My only worry would be injury, though a buyout at basically the league minimum makes that possibility quite tolerable.

Seems like a pretty fair deal

The club should've waited until after this season.
One good season isn’t enough. Though the contract isn’t by any means bad with the club option, but still.

If they wait
and he does well again all of those years go up, and the option is very tough to get at a reasonable price. It’s really a gamble both ways.

Yep
Especially with 6.5 being a relative bargain for a veteran 3/4 type.

Yep
This deal isn’t that bad at all unless Feldman completely stinks it up from here on out. Its not much more than he would get through arbitration over the next couple of seasons, could potentially be a huge bargain still, and gives you a reasonable option year/buyout. Plus, if Feldman is a guy you want leading the rotation, its best if you don’t have to worry about arbitration each offseason.

Can't remember exactly when we talked about a Feldman extension
last year but we thought 3 .years / $ 13 million was a fair price.

Yeah
Counting this year, he’s guaranteed $13.9 million all his arbitration years (including the option buyout). I think that’s a fair deal all around.
I doubt he’ll be worth the option, but it’s nice to have in the event he keeps getting better.

It won't be hard for him to be worth the option year
If he pitches like he did last season (talking about his IP and ERA, not his peripherals which I think improve from here on out), he’s going to be worth that option year.

All they did was buy out his arb years
and posibly his first FA year. His 2013 contract at $9.25M is going to be a bargain after he wins his 3rd Cy Young. :)

I think after this season
He’ll be extended to a deal that goes through his arbitration years with at least a couple of team option years on there. He’ll still be able to enter FA before his 30th birthday after that contract but would have some guaranteed money in the bank until then.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Right now hes slated to go into FA at age 26
It would be in the Rangers best interest to buy out at least two of those FA years and then probably a couple options onto the end of that also

If the Rangers could buy out two of his free agent years
with some options, then JD is a bigger genius than I thought. That’d be a Longoria type contract.
Go Rice Owls!
I doubt you'll see a contract like that
You’re asking for 4 years past the 4 he’s already guaranteed here. I highly doubt Elvis is going to sign that deal unless he absolutely loves it here.

Wonder if keeping him back a couple weeks last year would have made it easier if we only had to buy out 1 FA year?
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Probably not
Unless you’re really willing to pay Elvis big time, you aren’t likely getting 3 of his first FA years in an extension. Letting him start the season in the Majors though does show Elvis that the team believes in him and will be loyal to him which could help them out in contract talks.

I definitely like waiting until the end of this year.
Get ownership firmly in place and possibly get excellent value if he has a down year. Or, conversely, if the down year shows signs of bad things to come, have a larger sample size to decide not to extend him at all.
I think the plusses outweigh the price going up with an excellent second season.
Good for Feldman
Not sure whether he’s the real deal, but It’s not a major gamble on the team’s part.

I'm a believer in Feldman
I think this will be a very good deal for the Rangers going forward. For him, too, obviously.
I really like that the worked the steepest $ climb into the option year.
Sweet.

A contract that buys out arbitration years, that is?
I was going for the Michael Jackson angle, honestly

HAHA!
The jokes on Feldman, the Rangers wont be picking up his 2013 option because we’ll all be dead. HAHA…..heh…..yeah.
Also, I just got back from the game, on the way home I listened to 105.3….the same people that make comments at the DMN call in to radio shows…“It’s the same thing every year, no pitching, (huff) when them Rangers gonna get some real pitching?”
My fucking head hurts.

Stations like that
When are radio people going to realize that caller driven sports talk doesn’t work? Nobody cares what Bubba in Bedford has to say about the Rangers.
by LoneStarBallUser on Apr 3, 2010 9:11 AM CDT up reply actions
That's true
You do have to have talent and that is hard to find. However, it has been proven that the call in shows don’t work at all so why do they keep trying?
by LoneStarBallUser on Apr 3, 2010 9:40 AM CDT up reply actions
Because they want to give people what their competitor doesn't; a voice and chance to be heard
they just need better screeners/callers

People don't want to hear other people.
They could just go to a bar for that.
by brettgardner on Apr 3, 2010 10:05 AM CDT up reply actions
That's the point
There are not enough good callers to sustain that format. I think people want to hear themselves but not the other morons who call. Unfortunately, nobody thinks of themself as the moron so they call anyway.

Except
the only one who wants to hear most caller’s dumb asses is the caller themselves.

There's still talent to be factored in
It’s just talent for arguing and guiding conversation.
Most of the guys on the Fan completely and totally lack that. Arnie is so terrible that I actually prefer to listen to Ticket commercials rather than his show.
(And yeah, I switch stations around commercials. Go ahead and tell me I’m not a true P1 or whatever. Doesn’t matter. None of this matters.)

The only talent that matters
Is the talent to be entertaining. Most radio people in general lack that, which is why it’s a wasted medium.

Decent points
But as Joey noted today he should at least be worth his contract over the next three years if he’s a 1.8-2 win player. The only year that looks bad would be the option year, which we hopefully won’t have to pick up if we don’t need to.
Ron Washington is: The Bad Manager - Port of Call New Orleans
I think this is a good...
wait and see year on Feldman. He’s done enough to change what he offers on the mound from adjusting slot position to improved stuff, from what he had going into 2008 as a first time starter, and he had positive results with those changes last year (posted with favorable luck, to be sure), to wait and see if this deal is a “misstep.”
If the Rangers waited, and Feldman has a similar year this year, no way the Rangers can make this same deal a year from now. If Feldman regresses, which is likely, we just don’t know by how much, I’m not sure the money for the arb. years bought out are even approaching ridiculous for an average to slight below average pitcher in the American League to see this deal turn sour.
To me, this is about as fair a deal that could be done this off season to lock up Feldman. Matt seems to be banking on the regression toward the mean a little bit more than it matters with the actual dollar amount. If Feldman turns out to be a decent number four, or even just an average one, at an average of $5.5 million each season in 2011 & 2012, that’s still probably going to be a good value. And if he doesn’t regress by much and has similar years as ‘09 in 2011 & 2012, then it’s an awesome bargain for the club.
