So now...
…do the Cowboys try to move up to get one of the second-tier safeties?

But they still need to upgrade that O-line in the worst way.

He has repeatedly guaranteed that TCU would replace Baylor in the Big XII without a question.

Especially if Nebraska leaves.
But then how do you guarantee the OU-UT and OU-OSU matchup every year?
As for when it would happen, I dunno if you’ve been reading Stewart Mandel’s columns over at SI.com, but he said he’s now changed his mind and is convinced that the Big10 is expanding. They want a championship game and they want to cover more metro areas for their network and TV deals. MIzzou seems like the most likely pick.
If Brad Pitt is playing Beane who do you want playing you?
JD: Eddie Guardado.
by GhettoBear04 on Apr 22, 2010 10:25 PM CDT up reply actions
You can't guarantee it
But its a real possibility every year they could meet the way those two teams recruit. Think how much a win it would be for the Big !2 if those two meet for the Championship Game
I’ve been keeping up with those columns, and I do believe expansion will be coming here in the next couple of years. The Big 10 will be smart to go get Mizzou – could easily create some rivalry games. Nebraska would be a smart school to get, but I feel the history Nebraska has with the Big 12 they might stay
If the Big 12 does lose members, TCU is going to have to be one of the first schools the Big 12 contacts. One of the things I wonder, though, is whether or not Texas and OU will be for it. Those two teams recruit heavily in the DFW area, and if a school from that area entered into the Big 12, those schools might lose some recruiting power in this area.
I dunno. Right now, I say its 60 – 40 that TCU will be in the Big 12 in the next 5 years

I think they would look at TCU as another A&M quality program, even though that would be considered an insult if you looked at recent history.
I think they keep Baylor in for academic and competitive reasons. I’d really like to see Baylor build on this year’s NCAA basketball run and bring value that way.

Most people would probably say TCU and Houston
But one of the two would be the only feasible options. Both have the same problem- no new markets for the Big XII, which already has a serious television disadvantage.
I’ll be honest, if more than one school leaves, I don’t think the Big XII survives.
Random funny statement from someone on LSB here.
I won't say we are at the same level
But we are close. Our football team has been a 10 win team 4 out of the last 5 years and been bowl teams. Our women basketball team is solid, our baseball team is one of the top teams in the nation, and our Rifle program (yeah, pulling this out) just won a national championship

Exactly
You can’t kick Baylor out of the Big 12 cause they suck at football. They just fielded two basketball teams that lost late in both NCAA tourneys to the eventual title winners, their baseball team is solid and always a threat to make the tourney, and their Tennis team is strong and years removed from a nation championship

The problem with TCU from the Big XII's perspective
Is that TCU doesn’t bring any more markets into the television coverage.
That being said, from a competitive standpoint, TCU would be a good way to offset the loss of Mizzou from the North. The only problem is that OSU and OU will probably be in the same division no matter what, and there isn’t a corresponding school you could switch to the South to move them north.
Random funny statement from someone on LSB here.
That is a huge problem for TCU
Hell, its difficult to even fill up our stadium, and we were a top-10 team last year.
Hurts when you have less than 8000 undergraduates. Very tough to get a market out of that small of a class
Also, our stadium, if we move to the Big 12, would not be able to accommodate fans of schools like Texas or OU. Its just too small….

BTW, Baylor has just over 12,000 undergraduates, so it’s not like your problems are unique.
Random funny statement from someone on LSB here.
They say 44,008
But they are expanding it right now
Most we have gotten in the stadium was last years’ Utah game, where we got 50,307 fans in there. But most of it was because of ESPN being there earlier in the day
Still, if we come into the league, we would be the smallest school in the Big 12. I know a lot of recruits get scared off because of that

Klaw (1:18 PM) : Thanks, I had a great year at the plate!

You would be the smallest school, but that stadium is almost exactly the same size as ours.
Being the smallest school doesn’t scare recruits, trust me. Having a shitty team scares recruits, but obviously you guys don’t have that problem.
The only thing I have against TCU is that a lot of your fans don’t realize that your success is due largely to the fact that you aren’t in the Big XII.
You wouldn’t be where you are now if you were in Baylor’s position.
Random funny statement from someone on LSB here.
Oh don't worry, I'm a realist
I understand that its a lot easier going undefeated during the season when you don’t have to go against UT, OU, A&M, Neb, etc every year. It would be tough
But….the MWC isn’t like a minor conference. Going against Utah (who’s won two BCS games in the past 5 years) and BYU every year is just as tough as some of the teams in the Big 12 (except probably UT or OU).
And we try to schedule our opponents strong, which is why we have put Baylor, OU, and UT on our schedule. We can compete with those schools. Can we beat them? Right now, I say we give a good game to both UT and OU (not saying who would win) and we will prove ourselves vs. Baylor later this year (again, not saying who will win – Baylor is my second team. Love Griffin)
Matt (Denver, CO): Congratulations, I heard you won a gold glove!
Klaw (1:18 PM) : Thanks, I had a great year at the plate!
I think Jason Heyward is ready to be promoted to the AL. He’s mastered the NL - Matthew Carruth
Getting up to play 1 Big XII team per year != having a Big XII schedule.
And Utah gets the same advantage that TCU does (in scheduling, not in treatment).
You could have given OU a game this year for sure without Bradford, but UT would have had their way with you.
Random funny statement from someone on LSB here.
It's difficult, though
Scheduling these top teams in the Big 12. You really think OU or UT wants to drop a game vs. Florida Atlantic International or something (which is a easy W) for a team like TCU (which is a more difficult W)? With UT and OU always being ranked high in the standings, they can do games like this.
TCU, on the other hand, does everything we can to schedule these teams. That’s the only way we can move up in the rankings. That why we went and got Clemson and Virgina (yeah, I know they sucked) last year and went to their stadiums.
Besides, even if UT or OU agreed to play us, they are going to want us to go to their stadium. No way in hell they would want to come to Ft. Worth….

Lets see, he’s trash and the worst player ever according to your posts, but you want to bet over playoff wins? Moving the goalposts much? If he’s so trash I would think getting in the playoffs would discredit you.
I dont even know the bet, are you asking year one or career?
A few things:
1) I never said he was “trash” or “the worst player ever.”
2) I never said that he would get even 1 playoff win. I’m asking your opinion, since you value him so highly.
3) You know well that I am talking about his entire career. Don’t obfuscate.

To be a starter in the playoffs pretty much assumes a decent degree of regular season success as well. Which basically your prior posts have completely stated is not a possibility for Tebow.

I wasn’t sure about the WRs, but now that a great football mind like Roy has weighed in, I feel reassured.

Who’s significantly better? NE would be, but Welker’s hurt and may not recover. Houston and Arizona have the best WRs in the game, but their No. 2 guys are meh now. Wayne is the start of the next tier, but I’m not a true believer in Garcon and Collie yet.
SD or NO would be the best argument I think…

Yeah, good point.
I guess it depends how quickly Bryant reaches his potential. I’m already picturing Bryant as Santonio Holmes, and he’s not even guaranteed to be Eddie Royal yet.
Still, Witten-Austin-Bryant (Roy) has the chance to compete favorably with Vincent Jackson-Antonio Gates-Nane.
But Indy beats it with Wayne-Clark-Collie/Gonzalez/Garcon and NE beats it when healthy. NOLa is interesting, I can’t figure out how good any of those guys truly are. They’re like the GS Warriors of the NFL.

Williams steps up his play next year to try to stay on the field, and I think Ogletree takes a step forward as well.
So yeah, those four guys, along with Felix and Witten, should give us one of the most potent collections of pass-catchers around.

Doubt it.
Thinks he gets this year as a last chance. Technically we could go after Atogwe even if he stays, but I have no feel for what the cap will be when they get it all sorted out again.

Pretty good for Tebow though. I think he wasnt even necessarily expected to be drafted sometime last year. Now he’s in the first round. Pretty storybook story since he dominated high school and college.
But wait, the Broncs have Quinn too? Fuck, unless they trade him thats a lot of QB’s. Though they did say Orton is in the last year of his contract.

Jones on first round
Jerry Jones mentioned the three targets the Cowboys had in the first round. They were: Dez Bryant, Texas safety Earl Thomas and Idaho guard Mike Iupati.
They never got inside striking distance to get Thomas, who went 14th to Seattle, or Iupati, who went 17th to San Francisco, because they were unwilling to give up their second-round pick. Once the talk started about giving up a third rounder and getting a fourth back, then that’s when things fell into the striking distance and Bryant was still available.
Probably wise….

I know they took McClain a little higher than most would have, but I think he can be a pretty solid MLB. Much better than their recent 1st round draft picks.
And I’m just laughing my ass off that it was the Donkeys that took Tebow in the first round. What a fucking joke. I wonder if they go to he school of I Like To Blow My First Round Picks, like Oakland has recently.

The rest of this draft
will be interesting for the Cowboys. Most people believed they had to address their OL and DB depth in this draft, but now, after the first round and with only five picks left and only one left in the top 118, they have not addressed any of those perceived “needs”.
To be clear, I think they had a tremendous first round, got their targeted man and probably the best value in the round. But unless they are able to trade Spears or Crayton for additional picks, they have a very small margin for error if they really want to see the roster churn that Jerry always talks about.
I know we have a bunch of guys we know little about, guys who essentially redshirted last year, but I think Jerry has to find a way to come away with at least one viable option at OL and DB over the next two days. My guess: they take Allen, Burnett or Lewis today at 59 and then use their two fourths to volume draft at OL. My hope: they get DuCasse today at 59 and then find a way to wrangle Agotwe from the Rams for a later pick(s).
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
Yup, pretty much ditto that whole thing.
I worry if they’ll have the space to sign an Atogwe, but that would seem to give them the most complete team. Starters filled, Ducasse as a backup to both guard and tackle spots. Alan Ball returns to his rightful role as a backup.
But, I think you’re right. I think they’ll try to take the best safety available in the 2nd and then volume pick at OL in the 4th. They probably have a couple guys in mind who they think will fall. It’s not the worst case scenario, though I do fear this means we’ll end up with Cory Proctor as the backup C again. Blech.
If Brad Pitt is playing Beane who do you want playing you?
JD: Eddie Guardado.
by GhettoBear04 on Apr 23, 2010 10:09 AM CDT up reply actions
Realistically.
There’s 7 guys the Cowboys could take who could fill in as a backup OL or starting FS.
OL: Safford, Campbell, Brown, Ducasse
FS: Burnett, Allen, Major Wright;
There could be a couple large CB’s that could fit as FS, but I’m a little uncomfortable with it since we’d like for this pick to start. Still, when you look at the talent that’s there in the second, it seems likely that at least one of these guys will fall to us.
Guys who seem likely to go in the high to mid 2nd: Clausen, Colt, Taylor Mays, Linval Joseph, Golden Tate, Arrelious Benn, Brandon LaFell, Sergio Kindle, Brian Price, and probably Daryl Washington.
That’s 10 guys. So you just need another 10 teams who have different needs or different valuations and some of those 7 start to fall into play. I don’t think the Cowboys have the ammo to trade up, unless somebody gets interested in their players or they bite the bullet and use next year’s picks.
If Brad Pitt is playing Beane who do you want playing you?
JD: Eddie Guardado.
I'll add a name to that list
There is a guard from Illinois named Jon Asamoah who I’ve been reading about since he poppled up on Gosselin’s top 100 list at #54. He is widely regarded as the second best OG prospect in the draft.
It sounds like he could easily step in a either guard spot right away. If Safford, Brown and Ducasse are all off the board (and I expect they will be) then this guy is my next best option.
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
that's just a personal preference, though
the team generally likes big lineman, so the better name to keep in mind, and the one that actually visited the team before the draft, is John Jerry.
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
Yeah.
I should have added him to the likely to get drafted list. There teams that still need interior Olinemen that missed out on them in the first. I think he’ll be good, everything I’ve read about him suggests he has the size and the…temperament…to make a good OG.
I’m not sure Dallas goes this route. I think their biggest need right now on the OL is to hedge their bet on Free. At G, there’s some thought that Brewster could play there by this year, plus there’s always Proctor (blech). So I think someone like Ducasse would be a lot more valuable to them because he could theoretically serve as a backup to OT, if not right away, then maybe at some point this year. That would help them churn the bottom of the OL depth charts, which looks pretty crumby.
If Brad Pitt is playing Beane who do you want playing you?
JD: Eddie Guardado.
by GhettoBear04 on Apr 23, 2010 11:12 AM CDT up reply actions
I agree on Ducasse
but I think he, Brown and Safford will all be gone. Maybe I’m wrong, and I’d love for one of them to drop, but we are pretty far back in the second round.
An interesting scenario is if Jerry, Asamoah and Campbell are all still on the board. I think Asamoah is easily the best bet to have a good career of the three, but also probably has the lowest ceiling. At this point, I really want a sure thing, so I would push for Asamoah there.
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
Yeah, that's a good point.
Not sure Campbell has the handwork skills/training to come right in and be an effective blocker at the guard spot if someone got hurt. And he definitely doesn’t have enough experience right now to play OT. Guess it just depends what you think of your current crop of OL depth and how long you think it would take to train up Campbell. His ceiling is higher, but I certainly wouldn’t mind locking down the LG for a while.

We need to not always make hard work out of sex- Rick Carlisle.
As a refresher
Here are the players that visited the Cowboys before the draft:
LSU S Chad Jones
South Florida S Nate Allen
Florida C Maurkice Pouncey
Ole Miss OL John Jerry
Missouri State TE Clay Harbor.
Illinois WR Arrelious Benn
UMass OT Vladimir Ducasse
Indiana (Pa.) DB Akwasi Owusu-Ansah
Cal DE Tyson Alualu
Oklahoma State WR Dez Bryant
Penn State LB Sean Lee
Penn State LB Navarro Bowman
LSU WR Brandon LaFell
Kentucky FB John Conner
Idaho OG Mike Iupati
Penn State DE Jared Odrick
Wake Forest CB Brandon Ghee
Georgia Tech S Morgan Burnett
Ohio University WR Taylor Price
USC S Taylor Mays
Maryland OT Bruce Campbell
Rutgers CB Devin McCourty
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
talent wise, I'd be okay with it
but he and Sensabaugh are both sort of tweeners between FS and SS. I think Mays is much better in coverage than Roy Williams was, though.
Ghee could go around 60, but he doesn’t really fit our needs.
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
I think someone will take Mays earlier.
I would be a little upset because we’d have 2 SS it seems like.
Ghee has been interesting to me. He seems like one of those CBs that gets underrated for some reason and then one of the better drafting teams take him and in the fall we’re all wondering how he fell. I don’t quite understand though because he played in a Big6 conference, ran a 4.45 40 (in a year where the best was a 4.42 by Kyle Wilson), and has good size at almost 6’, 192 lbs. There’s some thought that he doesn’t have great man coverage skills, but someone with good speed like that should at least make for a very nice Cover2 guy.

I thought he was smaller
I guess I could get excited about that pick. The run at CBs at the end of round one might push him up the boards today, though.
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
Yeah.
I don’t think the Cowboys take him because they have needs that they didn’t address in the first (and now don’t have a third). If they had taken OL or FS in the first, then he would have made sense either late 2nd or anywhere in the third for the Cowboys (via trade up or trade down).
Still, the Cowboys do play a decent amount of man, so if he truly is more of a Cover2 guy, then I won’t be upset that they pass on him.

Forgot about Chad and Reshad Jones.
I think of Chad has having the potential to be similar to Sensi, though he’ll need some time to get there. LSU used him some as a deep safety, and he’s got decent speed and good skills on the ball in the air, but I think you’d be happiest if he was your SS. His best skills are closing burst and hitting, I just don’t think he will embarrass himself in coverage unless he’s asked to go up against a Welker type that every safety has trouble covering. 4 year player who’s supposed to be pretty bright (also a baseball player).
Reshad Jones seems like a pure SS to me. Not really interested.
