Around SBN: Penn State Recruiting Roundup Is Set For A Big Junior Day

Chris Davis optioned to AAA, Justin Smoak called up

Per T.R. Sullivan.

I'm very surprised.

UPDATE -- There's going to have to be a roster move to make room for Justin Smoak on the 40 man roster.  The choices would seem to be Tommy Hunter to the 60 day disabled list (making him ineligible to return to the majors until late May), or Brandon Boggs or Pedro Strop being designated for assignment.

UPDATE II -- Or Omar Poveda to the 60 day d.l., which seems like the most likely choice.  I'd forgotten about Poveda.

Aboslutely, there's a lot of blow-up-in-face possibility here

But, still, I’m going to be a dumb fan and just enjoy the good possibilities right now

see, Vlad is underwhelming us so far -

could be if Davis can get straightened out then he could turn himself into a power option if Vladdy craters
[maybe that’s the way they’re thinking]

by shroomer on Apr 22, 2010 10:21 PM CDT up reply actions

I think if CD...

goes down and gets his power stroke back while working the count like he has recently, you’ll probably see him back up before this season is done. I wonder though, given how much the Rangers rave about CD’s defense, when he gets back up to the big leagues, does he ever even see first base again or is it now Smoak’s?

by ghostofErikThompson on Apr 22, 2010 10:24 PM CDT up reply actions

I would just leave CD down there for a while

So he gets comfortable and smack some AAA pitchers around. Unless Smoak completely flops, I’d just keep him down there until September.

Ah didnt catch that !

And i also wouldnt say DFA’ing Cruz was giving up on him, he just needed more work in AAA. If they had tried to force him on the roster, i dont think he’d be the same player today.

But this is another topic anyway

I was going to say that keeping him in AAA does not mean pulling the plug on him

Anyway, the only circumstance that I can think of to bring him up before then, other than a Smoak puff, would be Vlad going down. Why would him have him up otherwise?

Even if he doesn't have

Teix’s power, I’m confident that with Smoak’s doubles that some amount of power will come. I keep flashing back to folks talking about Adrian Gonzalez as if he would be Mark Grace or John Olerud.

I’d rather have a hitter with high plate discipline than high power ratings right now on the Rangers. The lack of plate discipline and corresponding lack of OBP and baserunners seems to be this teams biggest offensive problem.

Ks...

with Chris Davis are going to happen. I think I would have made this move mid-May if things were trending the same way, but I wouldn’t have done it now.

And honestly, his play at first base has continued to be a bright side. Granted, Smoak is supposed to be able to pick it at first, too, so, we’ll see.

by ghostofErikThompson on Apr 22, 2010 10:28 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm not sure I understand making the move now,

but Davis’ defense this season has been average, not great, and defense at first doesn’t move my needle much. Also, I don’t think Davis’ defense was quite as good as was frequently advertised last year and heading into this season (including by Daniels), so…

by Josh Garoon on Apr 22, 2010 10:30 PM CDT up reply actions

Daniels' opined that Davis was the best defensive first baseman in baseball, right?

Can’t agree.

But even if he was ~ and even agreeing that Davis is going to strike out a ton, even when producing as needed ~ a 0.27 BB/K ratio, next to a sub-.250 wOBA, is simply awful. There’s really no other way to look at it.

by Josh Garoon on Apr 22, 2010 10:35 PM CDT up reply actions

I was in the same camp ~ but given what I'm seeing from Davis,

That's still relatively small for UZR, yes.

Davis could very well be an above-average defensive first baseman, by true talent. But it’s first base! Defense is not the dimension of import, here…

by Josh Garoon on Apr 22, 2010 10:49 PM CDT up reply actions

And...

where Chris Davis is actually better than a lot of first basemen, or at least according to folks like Ron Washington and Jon Daniels, is his ability to prevent errors on errant throws from teammates or stretching an ungodly amount to insure a close play is called in the Rangers favor.

Again though, that’s probably nominal over what Smoak will give you at first + not striking out three times a game.

by ghostofErikThompson on Apr 22, 2010 10:55 PM CDT up reply actions

I always assumed Davis' defense

at 1B wasnt measured by UZR. Are 1B picks and catches on throws counted? That’s where his defense is so great, he keeps bad throws from resulting in base runners.

This, too.

Though I think Davis’ stretching and scooping abilities are still relatively overrated.

I also can’t remember if DRS includes scoops? (philkid3, will you save me from looking this up?)

by Josh Garoon on Apr 22, 2010 10:59 PM CDT up reply actions

Haven't found whether scoops get included in +/- yet,

but there’s this from Dave Appelman at Fangraphs:

Also keep in mind that UZR does not include first basemen "scoops" or the ability of the first baseman to influence hits and errors caused by errant throws from the other infielders. According to my (MGL) research, yearly "scoops" numbers are generally in the 1-4 run range, which means that the true talent range of most first basemen with respect to "scoops" is probably in the plus or minus 2 runs per year range – i.e., not much.

by Josh Garoon on Apr 22, 2010 11:07 PM CDT up reply actions

It is included in plus/minus.

It’s one of the reasons Dewan claims it’s better. There was a rebuttle by MGL at TBB discussing it.

That said, Davis did have 39 scoops in a partial season last year according to FanGraphs. That’s a ton. There’s a lot of context ignored in that number, but it does suggest he may have been pretty good at it. But, the belief that “scooping” is the only way a first baseman can contribute on defense, or even the biggest way, needs to fade now.

by philkid3 on Apr 22, 2010 11:32 PM CDT up reply actions

Is there any way to judge the 'scoop' effectiveness by an increase in effectiveness of the other infielders?

There may be.

Those are the kinds of questions that should be asked and pursued.

I think that’s why they’re NOT in UZR, because they can be skewed by bad infielders the way good hitters can skew RBIs.

Picking a ball in the dirt

Records an out under tougher circumstances than a regular out.

I’m not sure how you pencildicks spend your time assigning a number and variance to a play when it doesn’t even seem you consider things like what side of the infield the throw was coming from or how many baserunners the play keeps from advancing/scoring. A pic could save a one base error or a two base error

all I know is Davis seems to pic more balls than he let’s get by him. Wrapping it up into a nice little ‘-5’??… Not sure I buy that

i don’t see how that should factor in unless you think that davis tries harder when there are more baserunners.

but the short answer to everything you’ve said is that you use averages and probabilities to arrive at the number of runs saved (more averages than anything else)

the number itself might not be useful but it’s still a good comparative tool

I really am.

And I also try to catch the O’s-Rangers match-ups. It’s been really nice since I arrived here in 2003, since tickets have been very easy to come by.

I do feel bad for Baltimore fans, though. They deserve better.

by Josh Garoon on Apr 22, 2010 10:38 PM CDT up reply actions

Agree

with the O’s sentiment. I moved up from OK in ‘95 and
they were fairly competitive and Camden was still sort
of new. Very hard to get a ticket back then, but now I don’t
even bother with any ticket purchase majorly in advance.

I still like going there however. I actually like Baltimore better
than DC, but maybe it’s just because I’m typically going to
Camden Yards and watching the Rangers. I did happen to
see a game when the Rangers came up for the ‘Nats a couple of
seasons ago. I figured it gave me an excuse to see their new
ballpark. Not bad, but there was absolutely no commercial
establishment around the park at the time. So after the game
everyone was cattle herded to the Metro unless you drove.
I’d like to think that situation has been improved by now

by BirmMD on Apr 22, 2010 11:14 PM CDT up reply actions

If you're that close

then I would agree. I’m about equi-distant between Baltimore
and DC in terms of driving if I’m going to downtowns; however,
I certainly didn’t drive all the way to the Nats ballpark. I do drive
to Camden though.

Like I said, the Rangers were on the schedule and I figured this
would be an easy opportunity (and maybe only opportunity) to see
the Nats stadium. My wife is already on record that she never wants
to go there, although I have taken her to a few games at Camden.

I was trying to say that Jamey mentioned in one of his emails last year that Thad Levine had done research that showed that after a certain number of big league ab’s, there is a good chance that what you see is what you get. I think Davis is approaching this threshold, and according to Levine’s research, what you see is likely what you get.

That's correct

He’s getting a quick promo, though. He’s at around 60 PAs for Oklahoma City.

So last year’s stumble is blamed totally on injury.

And evidently a very small sample is certifying him ML-ready this year.

I don't see any reason why it wouldn't be.

Whether it translates into on-the-field performance is something of a different question, as is whether Davis is doing something that involves giving up power in order to cut down on strike outs…

To be honest, this is a question that should got to Jason Parks,

or someone else who’s got the expertise to answer it thoroughly.

But based on my understanding, tool grades reflect the tool, and not the on-the-field application. So that a guy with great speed doesn’t lose tool points because he’s a moron who can’t run routes (or the base paths) worth a damn…

But, again, I’d defer to Jason’s opinion in a heartbeat on this.

BOSTON -The Rangers have announced that they have optioned struggling 1B Chris Davis to Triple-A Oklahoma City and have recalled Justin Smoak. Smoak will join the club in Arlington on Friday. He was pulled from Oklahoma City’s game in the eighth inning Thursday after fouling a ball off his foot. After being checked out and deemed OK to play, the Rangers decided to make the move

Did the Rangers make the decision before tonights game to make the move? If so, why did Smoak play for OKC? If not, what did CD do or not do in tonights game that made the Rangers make this move?

by blueballlefty on Apr 22, 2010 11:00 PM CDT up reply actions

Not after 2009 there's not.

by blueballlefty on Apr 22, 2010 11:04 PM CDT up reply actions

He had a .376 BABIP in the second half last year.

All he did last year was vacillate between being utterly terrible and then looking mediocre while riding an utterly unsustainable BABIP streak after he came back up.

Considering he doesn’t walk, and he doesn’t make very good contact, teams are not going to look at him as someone they can count on to perform if they accquire him. At best he’s a high-upside wild card to throw in on a deal at this point. So it’s really pretty silly to worry about his trade value being lowered because he’s “blocked” by Smoak.

why would hitting good for the THIRD FUCKING TIME in AAA impress more than the first two
the offense has been worse than last year when it sucked in April
firing wash has as much to do with this year as it does the last 3 his teams april struggles are notorious so why do we wait around until we are 10 games under by mid may? if a dude walks up and kicks you in the dick three times…. when he walks up and cocks his leg to kick the fourth time do you sit there or do you finally move and avoid the painful part? he’s walked up and cocked his leg for the fourth time why do we need to sit there and take another kick to the dick
I’m sorry if cocaine Ron offends you, but he is a 57 year old man that is in charge of 60+ million dollars of employees and he snorted fucking coke jackass so when I am mad about his sucky job performance I will call him Cocaine Ron

Teams may pick up on the fact that Davis is only 24 years old. Third stint in AAA ball at that age isn’t a big deal.

Hurdle hasn’t been around long enough for anyone to form an intelligent opinion about, period.

You can't control everything

You just bank on the fact that not everyone is into horticulture and people will pay for the convenience of buying from a drug store (which most people would).

I personally have acquaintances in both California and Colorado that are growing right now and selling to dispensaries that are paying a good chunk of taxes to both state and federal government. Does this mean the only people growing in those states are selling to medicinal shops and therefore paying taxes? Of course not.

We aren’t controlling the illegal arms trade but that hasn’t slowed down production of weaponry… it has nothing to do with control. It has everything to do with the lobbies. Guns and pharmaceuticals have huge ones, weed has a very small one, heroin doesn’t have one. If pfizer could patent heroin, it would be legal and prescribed by doctors.

Say what you will about Nolan Ryan being overrated statically in terms of being “the greatest pitcher of all time” But I would bet you that he made lifelong baseball fans out of more people in the Rangers market than anyone can conceivably count in a time when the Rangers had no business making fans out of their team.

1) I liked the opposing national league teams better. Atlanta’s always been awesome and Philly was a cool team to root for when I was in middle school (now they seem kind of silly)

Wow.

I like that reasoning with Andrus, but not sure how I feel about it with Smoak.

CD has struggled, but has it really been because he has had poor quality ABs? I’m asking, because I don’t know. He made a conscious effort to hit up the middle and to LF for much of ST and said he was trying to get back to that approach after the first few games.

I don't think he's looked good at the plate.

I know there are folks who’ve been saying he’s put together good ABs lately, but that reminds me a lot of the amount of rope he was given last year. I don’t know how many hopeful posts I made, observing that Davis just needed a couple more ABs like that to break out. He never did.

At some point, the outcome of ABs has to be factored into their quality, right?

This is important
At some point, the outcome of ABs has to be factored into their quality, right?

The team is 5-9 when it was supposed to be competitive. If the guy on the shortest leash on the club is putting up those numbers, he’s not going to stick long.

The deal with Davis is that he was given too much rope last year, with every week people saying “Gee, he hit that home run off a lefty – he’s about to break out!” followed by 10 Ks in 4 games. He’s just a guy who puts up some good at bats and some awful at bats; and until he figures out how to limit the latter, he’s simply not going to be a major leaguer.

Go Rice Owls!

by JBImaknee on Apr 22, 2010 11:56 PM CDT up reply actions

Yup.

Like I wrote above, last season I was definitely one of those folks posting comments to the effect that Davis looked as if he was turning the corner ~ until I realized that he was turning the same three corners, over and over and over again.

And this season, Texas actually has a guy who could produce at first. We’ll see if he does, but I certainly like Smoak replacing Davis more than, say, Blalock or Jones…

by Josh Garoon on Apr 23, 2010 12:00 AM CDT up reply actions

I don't really know

but he is still swinging at way too many pitches outside the strike zone (well above major league average), and not making any contact when he does so. On the other hand, he is making much better contact with pitches in the strike zone, but hasn’t shown any power.

To be fair, he is swinging at fewer pitches outside of the zone than he did last year, but it’s not like a Hamiltonian improvement yet.

by Telegraph on Apr 22, 2010 11:00 PM CDT up reply actions

Excited to see Smoak

Would of liked to see him get more than 50 AB’s at OKC this year before his call up. But with a black hole at 1st base, it is time to start looking at other options. Now this move has been made, Smoak needs to be solid and give Davis until August or September to get straightened out and regain his power stroke.

KLaw in his chat earlier today...
David (Dallas)
Would you replace Davis with Smoak today? Or would you wait until the end of May to delay arbitration for a year? I’d prefer getting him in the lineup now. Worry about the contract later.

Klaw (2:03 PM)

They’ve pushed off free agency. That, to me, has always been the big variable. Buying back a year of control is expensive. Paying more in arbitration because the player has produced more for you … sure, you hate to spend more money, but the extra cash is only going to be significant if the player was very good over the two-plus years, and the extra 100-odd AB Smoak might get in the next 5-6 weeks would, most likely, make him a more productive hitter for them later this season.

Good move here

When a corner IF is hitting .200, doesn’t have a very good OBP, and can’t get around on fastballs….he should not be in the bigs. Simple. Texas did the right thing by sending CD down. It was the right move last season and it is now as well. If he figures stuff out great, but there is a great chance that Smoak is up and never going back down.

Also, after the messy Hicks story broke this week coupled with the poor trip, I wonder if this move also was made to put more butts in the seats this weekend. Just a theory, but regardless the right move.

I wonder if this is also because of their inability to hit lefties...

Also I see Garko getting cut as soon as Kinsler comes off the DL, with both Arias and Blanco sticking around. David Murphy starts to get a little time at 1B too on days Smoak rests. Davis ends up getting traded for a catcher at the first sign that Salty isn’t hitting well.

Woah

How many first basemen do we need at OKC? Tracy, Brown, Moreland even though he is playing RF, some guy named Jenkins and now Davis.

I am guessing Brown plays 3rd, Davis starts at 1st and Tracy rotates between DH, 1st, and 3rd.

Wonder if we will see either Tracy or Brown being called up sometime this season when Vlad gets hurt or Garko gets cut. I suspect we will see Max up before either of those other guys though.

by casew on Apr 23, 2010 2:17 AM CDT reply actions

Doubt it on Tracy, unless they just want a body for the spot and don't plan to give that guy any PT outside of Ragnarok

(although, if that is the case, then Tracy makes sense, because it doesn’t hurt the org to let him sit and rot {like sitting Max would, theoretically} on the end of the bench, plus you can flush him off the 40 with very little consequence after you’re done with him).

But, Brown or Tracy require the dreaded corresponding 40 move. And you know what trumps all.

I said it yesterday, I wish he’d have layed off this move longer. But, I can’t say it was the wrong move.

Welcome Justin Smoak! It’s tine for This Thing to get back on the tracks.

Yeah

let’s face it, Chris has done nothing to stay up in the majors longers, so it’s tough to say the move was wrong.

However, Chris is probably also paying for MY and Borbon’s slow start, Teagarden’s spectactular suckitude,

You really can’t carry a 1B that isn’t hitting when you have a likely replacement, when your 3B, CF, and C aren’t really bringing much to the team. Had Borbon or Teagarden had as many ABs last year as CD had and they had ready replacements on the farm, I’m sure they would have gotten the demotions also.

Yeah..

I think if others werent struggling so bad right now davis would be given more rope. But the team just can’t carry so many sucky hitters right now.

I would have preferred Teagarden be sent down, but there aren’t many other options to replace him and catcher is a position that isn’t expected to produce a ton of offense.

well

The season is long, we’ll see just what happens to Tea and Julio. As you said, we don’t have options behind them like we did in Smoak.

What’s this do to Chris Davis’ psyche? Last year, he struggled mightily, got sent down, he killed in AAA, came up, struggled mightily (again), and is now back down to AAA.

Even if he kills in AAA again, does even Chris believe he can get the job done? That’ll be very interesting to watch…

Teagarden

So why is JD candy-assing Teagarden?

Or is he still “too smart” to play for this manager?

what option do we have?

Treanor already plays three days a week. Tea may very well be gone when/if Salty’s healthy and good to go

Only thing about demoting Tea is it adds more pressure to the C/1B clog at OKC

They’ll have to try and get both him and Max AB’s behind the plate, and with all the 1B/DH types down there already that’s gonna be tough to do.

I really don't care

about CD’s psyche. If he isn’t strong enough to overcome adversity, most likely he isn’t strong enough to hold up to the pressures of post season play if we ever get there.

Oh, i'm not advocating coddling

I’m just really interested to see if, like you said, he can overcome this second demotion. Even if he kills in AAA, he might not ever get the chance with the Rangers again. He might prove to be just another guy that kills AAA pitching and can’t quite make the jump to The Bigs.

Random: has anyone ever made a movie about lawn gnomes?

Cause I think this is something that needs to be done. The movie itself would probably be something along the lines of those terrible “Garfield” movies they made with Jennifer Love Hewitt, but the novelty would be awesome.

Lawn gnomes are Hollywood’s last untapped frontier of utter stupidity, I think.

I’m talking a movie about actual lawn gnomes, sitting out there in the yard. With a kid that talks to them or something.

That does remind me though, of another idea I’d like to see made into a movie: the Artemis Fowl books. I want to see the LEPrecon in action on screen.

is ‘Skinny Legs and All’, by Tom Robbins. A story about a painted stick, a conch shell, a desert spoon, a dirty sock and a can of beans on their way to Jerusalem would be interesting on the big screen.
