I'd go OT, first
Just me, though… would not be sad with a safety
(Secretly hoping Sergio falls) and we go best available, again
Wha?
i sort of get the OT, but why would you want another OLB on a team that has 2 pro-bowl quality ones and drafted 2 OLB’s last year.
You realize that Alan Ball is the starting FS right now and there’s no real backup?

This should be one of the most fun round 2's in history
Very deep draft class and a lot of interesting names drawing trade interest. I personally hope the Cowboys can land a top notch free safety or perhaps a guy like Bruce Campbell. Depth at tackle would be nice.
I looked at the round 2 mocks today.
I don’t see any way that the Cowboys pass up on Morgan Burnett for Al Woods. Maybe for Linvel Joseph, but even then…

Odd,
I like Price, but 2 DT’s with your first 2 picks? I mean, I’m all for BPA, but I question this. Who the hell plays WR for them?

I think there will be quality WR options
throughout rounds two, three and four, and they have a lot of picks.
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
Sure.
But they have other needs, too, know? Also, are either of these guys 2-gap NT types? I thought they were both more 1-gap types?

Eh.
Pretty good team and they basically build through the draft. I wouldn’t be too quick to question them. They need a NT and a few other positions. But that offense is pretty scary.

National Football Post: I love the Bucs’ pick here as they get another one-gap guy who can get up the field and make plays behind the line of scrimmage. The idea of pairing him with Gerald McCoy is a scary thought for the rest of the NFC North.
Yep, I can bet that the Vikes are worried about playing these guys twice a year…

Yes, the Bucs are not in a division with the Vikings
That’s why it’s funny that professional writers who get paid for writing and use that money to buy food and place to live wrote that the Bucs were in the NFC North.
That’s why I posted it, with the title ‘Heh’, implying a chuckle of some level. I added value to that by making the joke about the Vikings being worried about playing them twice.

So let me get this straight.
We go into this draft with obvious holes on the O-line and at safety, and we end up with a WR and a LB. We have like 6 WRs already and about 10 LBs.
Safeties that we should have had our eyes on that are now off the board are:
Berry, Thomas, Allen, Burnett, Mays, Wright, Jones
O-linemen now off the board are:
Williams, Okung, Davis, Bulaga, Saffold, Ducasse, Brown, Iupati, Pouncey, Asmoah, Veldheer, Jerry
I know we got two good players, but god damn. Our two biggest areas of need weren’t addressed early like at least one of them should have been, and now pretty much all the bigger names in both areas are off the board. Hopefully they have big plans in free agency, because so far I’m pretty unimpressed with the way this has gone.
Pitching coach Mike Maddux on Darren Oliver’s 0.00 ERA this spring:
"Economical work. He ain’t getting paid by the hour."
Why does this team refuse to draft a safety?
The need has been there for a long time now. They won’t even fill it with premium players from FA. At least they were willing to throw money at the OL.

by GhettoBear04 on Apr 23, 2010 8:32 PM CDT up reply actions
Seriously man, I don't know.
We haven’t addressed it since Woodson left. I think they’re scared because they fucked up by drafting Roy Williams early. The problem is, that was their own fault because of the type of safety he is. He’s always been that kind of player. They should have taken the ballhawk in Ed Reed instead. It annoys the shit out of me, that’s all I know.
Pitching coach Mike Maddux on Darren Oliver’s 0.00 ERA this spring:
"Economical work. He ain’t getting paid by the hour."
Sigh...had to follow on my phone.
This is the problem with the draft on a Friday night. I tried, but just couldn’t make it work.
Anyways, I’m disappointed. I don’t think it’s a huge reach and I can at least appreciate that the Cowboys were following their draft board/method. But I have had a problem with the Cowboys strategy the past 2 years.
In last year’s draft, they decided to keep moving down when the depth to the draft wasn’t great. They kept accumulating picks…and then using them to stock positions that already had talent at. I understand it to a point, but feel like it leaves your team vulnerable to injury because you don’t have depth at some positions. They just seem to overvalue certain positions like OLB at the expense of positions like OL.
This year’s draft was widely considered to be one of the deepest drafts in a while. Teams were trying to accumulate picks in the 2nd and 3rd rounds because there would be much better players there than usual. The Cowboys came into it with one glaring hole that needed to be addressed and a need of replenishing depth at OT after promoting from within. They had lesser needs for OG/OC depth, ILB depth, DL depth and possibly a playmaker on offense. Already down one pick, they traded up in the first to secure a WR. This was a great value and hard to argue, but they lost a pick in the 3rd round for it. This is even more glaring because they didn’t address one of their 2 needs, which wouldn’t be as bad if you still had 2 picks in the top 100. In this draft, you could find a starting FS and a backup OT with that. Instead, they use a 4th to trade up to select another position that is a weakness, especially starting next year, but does not match up to one of the major holes. This is even more frustrating than the first round because, while it was good value, there were quality players at the positions you needed in the 2nd. This couldn’t really be said for the 1st round. Ducasse, Burnett and Major Wright go in the next 15-20 picks.
This frustrates me because the Cowboys seem to actively give the finger to their fan base by continually avoiding Safeties and OLinemen high in the draft in the past 5 years. It’s not an issue when you have a young Roy Williams and OLinemen in their prime. It’s not a huge issue if you’re ok with paying premium prices in free agency, like the Cowboys did with Bigg Davis and Hamlin and now Sensibaugh. It is an issue if you decide that not only are you going to cut league average players, but you aren’t going to pursue any free agents to fill those holes. One of the strengths of Jerry’s drafts until the last couple of years is that he would fill holes before the draft so they wouldn’t have to draft for need. He did the exact opposite this year.
I expect that Lee will be a good player; I know they liked him. I’m sure they liked his intangibles, which are important to them at his position. Drafting him now gives them time to have him put on some weight and learn the system for next year, when Brooking will be gone.
It’s just incredibly frustrating the Cowboys would create needs due to finances and then not address them with their first 3 picks in the draft. I understand falling in love with Bryant, but why not trade down with your 2nd? They could have moved down 5-10 spots, picked up an extra 4th and taken Burnett. And this isn’t just griping about a player that only I like; the Cowboys were reportedly high on him, brought him in for a predraft workout, was under consideration for their 2nd and 3rd round picks. They could have stayed right there and taken Ducasse and then tried to trade back up into the third to take Burnett or Wright.
The Cowboys created two holes, then filled depth at two less pressing spots. The onus is on them to fill these spots in what’s left of free agency. Blah.
If Brad Pitt is playing Beane who do you want playing you?
JD: Eddie Guardado.
Well they obviously thought Lee was worth significantly more

Pitching coach Mike Maddux on Darren Oliver’s 0.00 ERA this spring:
"Economical work. He ain’t getting paid by the hour."
I understand
But the point is that they thought Lee was worth significantly more than the next best guy at S or OL.
I mean, you really can’t go into this expecting to just solve all your problems. Most draft picks bust. You have to pick the best players you possibly can.
by brettgardner on Apr 23, 2010 8:48 PM CDT up reply actions
I have very little faith..
..in Alan Ball as a starting FS for a Superbowl contending team.
I’m uncomfortable, but ok, with not addressing OL there. They created the hole at FS and have not addressed it when they could have. They could have even traded down to get the most value if they felt that strongly about Burnett or Wright not being 2nd rounders.
Using 3 picks to get 2 guys, neither of whom address needs, when you are a few players away from being a Superbowl contender, is a bad use of resources. If they still had Hamlin, I would be 100% on board.

Atogwe is a target at safety and Jamaal Brown might be a possibility at tackle.
They’ve had bad luck with Rogers and Brewster which is another reason Jerry might have been hesitant.
I think they would have possibly taken Nate Allen in the 2nd if they could have.
Yes on Atogwe and Brown....
Add Darren Sharper to the list.
I don’t think they’re looking for a starter on the OLine.

Ahh well, as always, all you guys getting so caught up in the nuances of this draft stuff is funny, since it’s incredibly irrelevant.
Colt in Clev
Initial tendency is to go “Oh, Cleveland sucked last year, they must be horrible”. But I looked up their OC, and he doesnt look too bad. Then I looked up their schedule, and they closed on a 4 game winning streak. Then I looked at their roster, the QB’s are Jake Delhomme (who is 35), McCoy, and Seneca Wallace.
All in all maybe not too bad of a situation for McCoy. Delhomme obviously isnt the long term starter, and there isn’t any other QB of note on the roster to compete with McCoy for heir apparent, at least currently.
Yeah.
McCoy should be starting by next year. They don’t have a lot of targets though…

scouting report
Cornerback Specific Traits
Fluidity 1
Shows good flexibility and stays low out of backpedal. Extremely loose hips and changes directions with ease. Displays strong range when lined up at the safety position. Also appears to have the size and ability to turn and run if lined up as a press corner at the next level.
Closing Burst 2
Smooth transition out of backpedal. Does a good job of sticking foot in the ground allowing him to plant and drive quickly. Shows extra gear when closing on the ball. Adequate recovery speed to make up ground when caught in trail position.
Ball Skills 1
Appears to be his best asset. Turns, locates, and play the ball extremely well. Takes proper angles to the point and is aggressive attacking the ball. Above-average hands and can pull down the tough interception. Shows ability to create after making interception.
Instincts/Mental Toughness 3
Is called a corner in the IUP defensive scheme but mainly lines up at the safety position. Will take time to adjust to understanding splits, routes, and concepts if used as a press-corner at the next level. Does a good job of reading QB’s eyes when lined up at safety position allowing him to get a good jump on the ball. An emotional player on the field that plays with confidence and a bit of a swager. Can be overaggressive at times playing against lower level competition and will need to show more discipline against NFL caliber level competition.
Run Support 2
Diagnosis run quickly and fills the alleys with good overall angles. Possesses long arms and is a strong wrap-up tackler in the open field. Fights off blocks well. However, needs to show more aggression and physicality upon contact on occasion.
Wow.
If that’s the ESPN/Scouts Inc ranks, that’s even better than I was expecting.

Getting Owusu-Ansah makes me very happy.
I knew he had the size to be a CB/FS tweener, but I didn’t know he already had some experience at S. That makes it even better. Hopefully, he doesn’t take quite as long to challenge for the starting FS spot.

We have 3 startable CB’s. That’s not thin. I imagine Ball slides over to CB in dime packages. And now you have Owusu-Ansah as a guy who can backup FS and CB.
If you’re looking for 4th and 5th CBs, those guys are roster fodder that gets churned during training camps. The Cowboys will be able to find one during training camp roster cuts if they see a need.

Even though Matt Millen no longer is in position to screw up a war room on draft day, he still has found a way to do something stupid during the league annual selection meeting.
Earlier today, Millen called ESPN colleague Ron Jaworski a “Polack” while on the air.

Pitching coach Mike Maddux on Darren Oliver’s 0.00 ERA this spring:

One of the reasons I read before the draft, and this is being entirely serious...
Is that coaches are afraid of drafting really smart guys like Rolle because of a supposed lack of respect or coachability issues.
Random funny statement from someone on LSB here.
I could see that, except FSU coaches and players aren't exactly geniuses
And he never had any problems there.
I think the biggest concern is that if he sustains an injury that requires any sort of difficult rehab, he might just elect to retire and go to med-school to become a neuro-surgeon.
I personally think that he’s the type of player that’s going to be really good in the NFL, and everyone is going to be like “Well, duh….”
That's a good point
There have been questions about his dedication to the game, since he has so many other options available to him.
Random funny statement from someone on LSB here.
Yeah.
They worry that guys can be ‘too smart’ for the game. Spend too much time thinking instead of reacting.
The other knock on him is that he’s not dedicated enough to football.
He also doesn’t have a ton of production in college, plus the year off. His combine times were alright, if I remember correctly.

Yeah.
Dez I understand. You can’t let a talent like that pass you up. But you’re COMPLETELY missing my point. The Cowboys have like 6 receivers and about 10 LBs on the team right now. WR and ILB were not our biggest needs. We have cut 2 veterans that were starters at 2 very important positions, and I am not comfortable with the options we have in house right now to replace them.
Pitching coach Mike Maddux on Darren Oliver’s 0.00 ERA this spring:
"Economical work. He ain’t getting paid by the hour."
I'm not COMPLETELY missing your point
ILB isn’t all that strong, and neither is receiver. But more to the point, I don’t believe you have to struggle to find someone to fit your perceived biggest needs. I think you take the best players you possibly can, both in the draft and in free agency.
by brettgardner on Apr 24, 2010 2:04 PM CDT up reply actions
Okay.
So if the best player on the board when we pick in the first round is a TE a RB or a QB you take that over a guy like Earl Thomas who is graded slighty lower but fills a bigger need? I’m sorry, but I hate the BPA approach. I agree with it to a certain extent, but at some point you have to address your needs.
Pitching coach Mike Maddux on Darren Oliver’s 0.00 ERA this spring:
"Economical work. He ain’t getting paid by the hour."
QB is different in my mind
Because backups never play.
But the real answer to your question is that I think teams take need into consideration when making their boards, so when a guy is higher on the board, you don’t need to make the consideration on the spot.
by brettgardner on Apr 24, 2010 2:08 PM CDT up reply actions
It's a balance.

You'd be surprised.
Teams pay so much to first round picks that many are expected to play almost immediately, even for good teams. For instance, Brandon Graham will be a starter for the Eagles this year. They went 11-5 last year, will probably be pretty decent this year (assuming Kolb is league average).

I’m just saying, early round players start. They may end up sucking and getting put on the depth chart by the end of the year, but most end up starting pretty quickly.
Sure, you can’t expect to fill 6 or 7 holes to make a good team. But most teams are looking for 4 starters from each draft and, depending on position, many of them are getting the needed developmental PT in their first year. Lots of turnover.

Putting in the call now for USC QB Mitch Mustain to be Cowboys 2011 2nd round pick
That is if we don’t wind up trading next years number 2 for Myron Rolle. Some might fault Mustain for not starting the last few years at Southern Cal. But we just can’t take a chance at missing out on the next Matt Cassel. Anyway, we know he is a great QB, he just hasn’t been properly utilized in college. For goodness sakes, he was the top QB coming out of high school in 2006. Definitely a can’t miss draft pick.

We have a tendency of getting really obsessed with a certain player because ESPN vastly over-hypes them. Nothing against Rolle, I liked him coming out of high school and was very impressed when he took the year off to be a Rhode’s scholar. But the fact is, he is a 7th round pick so it really isn’t a big loss unless he turns into a Pro Bowl caliber safety within the next few years. Anyway, he seems to be more of a strong safety project. I just used Mitch Mustain because I can guarantee you that in the next draft he is going to be hyped up because of who he is and where he was a backup QB.

Found this from BCC
One of the more popular of the William & Mary recruits is defensive tackle Sean Lissemore. Lissemore has to be one of the only, if not the only, defensive tackle to enter a draft as a former track star in high school. His 11.20 seconds in the 100m made him one of the best sprinters in New Jersey. A high school linebacker at 6’3, 240 pounds, Lissemore has since gained 50+ pounds yet managed to keep his linebacker speed. His 4.83 40 yard dash would have placed him among the fastest DTs at the combine if he had received an invite.
With all that speed, the next, logical step is to question his strength. His 36 reps on the bench press would have earned him third amongst the defensive lineman at the combine. His 30 inch vertical is very respectable for anybody near the 300 pound weight range. Clearly Lissemore is an athlete with the necessary NFL measurables.
Production is the only thing left to look at production and Lissemore has that too. Although hampered by a nagging shoulder injury that hurt his stat totals in his sophomore year and even affected his play into the beginning of his junior season, Lissemore pulled it all together during his senior campaign. In 14 games, Lissemore accumulated 66 tackles, 14 of which came for a loss, 6.5 sacks and 2 interceptions. All very good numbers from the DT position.

I agree that the options left weren't better than what's in FA.
Let’s just hope he targets those players. If we go into the season with FS and the O-line as it sits I’m not optimistic at all.

Are you telling me that drafting a 7th round lineman or safety would have made you feel better?

What safety? There aren't any left my man.
As far as O-line goes, Black, Carter, Tyshovnytsky, Capers, Matthews, and Washington are all still on the board. Yeah, any one of those guys would have made me feel better.

They took a tackle and a safety in the draft.

Based on the scouting reports, that tackle isn't very good and is probably limited to the right side.
And that safety is a project that will not have an impact on anything but ST this season. Sorry, I’m not impressed.
Pitching coach Mike Maddux on Darren Oliver’s 0.00 ERA this spring:

I’m more concerned with whether Dallas is impressed.

If you're drafting a backup lineman
I have to think that 4 years, starting every game, at a big program like Notre Dame is a pretty good pick.
He is as good now as he is going to be, though.
According to all of the reports I’ve read.
Random funny statement from someone on LSB here.
Right, but probably more game ready than any of the other linemen available
That’s why I liked the pick, we weren’t looking for a starter, just depth
i do agree with him that it was a deep draft
however, no other linemen have been taken so far and there’s a good chance no others will so I don’t see the big deal about raiding the UFA pool
That's true too.
I’m just going off what I’ve seen so far. But like I’ve said a lot so far, the off-season isn’t over and I’m definitely knee jerking. It just aggravates me that they haven’t addressed those two things yet. There’s still time/options though. Most of the guys I mentioned above, if not all of them will probably be there in the UDFA pool. I just don’t have a lot of confidence that Jerry will take any of them, based on what’s happened so far.
Pitching coach Mike Maddux on Darren Oliver’s 0.00 ERA this spring:
"Economical work. He ain’t getting paid by the hour."
He is seen as a S.
But he’s not going to help us at S this year so it doesn’t really matter. He’s a project.
Pitching coach Mike Maddux on Darren Oliver’s 0.00 ERA this spring:
"Economical work. He ain’t getting paid by the hour."
Dude
It’s getting old. What would you have done? Reached for Saffold over Bryant in the first? Reached for Burnett in the 2nd?
There was no value. You lose in this league by making dumb draft choices just to fill a need. Jerry got great value with pretty much every pick; I’ve got no ammo in terms of criticism for him. If he’d chosen Bryant over Earl Thomas at 23, It’s one thing. But he chose Bryant over Saffold, McCourty, and Hughes. I have no problem with that.
http://oursaviorchuck.ytmnd.com/
I don't have an issue with the 1st rounder.
It’s everything after that. Yeah, Sean Lee is a good player. And ILB is a bit of a need (though not immediate). There’s no other way for me to put it. The draft is over and we still two gaping holes.
Pitching coach Mike Maddux on Darren Oliver’s 0.00 ERA this spring:
"Economical work. He ain’t getting paid by the hour."
The Cowboys had Sean Lee graded as a first rounder
That indicates he was one of their top 23.
Burnett, the next safety taken, was picked 71st.
http://oursaviorchuck.ytmnd.com/
We could have traded back into the 3rd and took either Burnett or Wright and I would have been happy.
Nobody we took after the 3rd impresses me at all. I’ve got nothing against Lee, I think he’s going to be a good LB for a long time, but I just can’t help being mad that we didn’t get a FS. I’m aggravated at the O-line too, but there’s a lot of guys that are going to be UDFAs that we will have a chance at (Black, Carter, Tyshovnytsky, Capers, Matthews, and Washington), so hopefully we jump on a few of those guys. If we do I will instantly feel a lot better about the draft. But I’m worried big time about our FS situation. We have to sign Sharper/Atogwe now. It’s an absolute must.
Pitching coach Mike Maddux on Darren Oliver’s 0.00 ERA this spring:
"Economical work. He ain’t getting paid by the hour."
I agree we need someone
But I’m not as worried about it as the situation would normally warrant… remember, Sensebaugh was almost unheard of last year. We brought him in, and aside from that one play where he didn’t even notice the ball had been thrown to Sidney Rice, who he was running right with… he was very solid. You can find decent safeties.
http://oursaviorchuck.ytmnd.com/
Let's hope so.
Like I said, there are a couple of more than decent safeties available. Sharper, Atogwe, both of those guys would be massive upgrades over what we had last year. There is also some talk that Nick Collins might be on his way out in Green Bay. The problem is, the Cowboys are talking like they’ve already made their mind up that Ball is going to be the guy. The same kind of talk they’ve been spewing about Free. I am not optimistic that they will do the right thing, but there is still time for them to prove me wrong.
Pitching coach Mike Maddux on Darren Oliver’s 0.00 ERA this spring:
"Economical work. He ain’t getting paid by the hour."

I don't know if I would say better.
If the Minnesota game is any evidence that’s not true. I admit though, he was kind of thrown into that situation without really preparing for it, so under the circumstances I guess you could argue that he did alright (that’s what most people say to me on Free). I just can’t overlook the fact that Jared Allen was not a factor until Free came in. I think he’s most definitely more disciplined than Flo. The penalties on the left side should go down considerably. Hopefully he can dominate those elite pass rushers like Flo did though. Either way, even if I’m wrong about him (which I will admit has a pretty good chance of happening), we still need to bring in some depth there. Our most competent backup T right now is McQuistan. Yikes.
Pitching coach Mike Maddux on Darren Oliver’s 0.00 ERA this spring:

The Minnesota game really exposed our oline.
We just could not protect Romo, and he doesn’t throw the ball away fast enough to make up for it like Brees did in the NFC Championship.
Random funny statement from someone on LSB here.
A couple of things
Allen wasn’t a nonfactor before Free entered the game. He was Jared Allen; he just hadn’t recorded a sack yet. Flo didn’t get very many snaps.
Flo wasn’t a great tackle last year. In fact, he wasn’t even average.
He’s still a fantastic run blocker (which is why I think he’d be well-served converting to guard, Leonard Davis-style) but he can’t passblock anymore. Dude gave up 8 sacks, 7 QB hits, and 34 pressures last year.
Free played mostly on the right side, but he was solidly above-average there. He can’t pave lanes or seal an edge for the RBs like Flo can, but he’s a more reliable passblocker.
And as I recall, the one sack Allen got in that Minnesota game was actually on Witten.
http://oursaviorchuck.ytmnd.com/

That you’re right? Well, no, it isn’t. It’s your opinion. And since you’re not a professional in the field, I value it a lot less than someone whose job it is to make these types of decisions.

Just tell me this then.
(A) Do you think Doug Free is better than Jared Gaither?
(B) Do you think Alan Ball is better than Darren Sharper or OJ Atogwe?
Pitching coach Mike Maddux on Darren Oliver’s 0.00 ERA this spring:
"Economical work. He ain’t getting paid by the hour."
Okay, then you agree that there are better options available.
So you think I’m right. I’m not going to worry about the draft anymore. I don’t think we could have upgraded LT unless we got in the top 10, and that wasn’t happening. I do fully believe that there were guys all the way up the 3rd that would have upgraded FS though. But it doesn’t matter, it didn’t happen. Now we have to look to FA. There’s still opportunity to improve, but I’m not convinced that those opportunities will be taken. I think they are content with what they have, and I think that decision is wrong. If we win the Super Bowl then I’ll eat crow. But if those positions aren’t upgraded I see no chance in hell of that happening.
Pitching coach Mike Maddux on Darren Oliver’s 0.00 ERA this spring:
"Economical work. He ain’t getting paid by the hour."
I was responding to talk of the draft
So no, I don’t think you’re right.
Talk about Gaither is neither here nor there. It’s not as if he’s just knocking on the door at Valley Ranch, waiting to be let in.
And I’ve never said that I’m happy with Ball starting. But I also don’t think some 5th round safety is going to be better than him on day one. I’m fine with pursuing other options.
by brettgardner on Apr 24, 2010 6:15 PM CDT up reply actions
I'm fine with pursuing other options too.
We kinda have no choice now. We do, I guess, but standing pat is the wrong move.
And you know it doesn’t work that way with Gaither, come on now. It doesn’t matter if he’s standing outside of Valley Ranch with a boombox over his head blaring Endless Love. It’s completely up to the Ravens what happens to him. I don’t know, I seriously doubt anything will be done to significantly boost the O-line as far as adding a starter. They might bring in some backup quality guys off of the scrap heap, but that’s probably it. I don’t like it, but if it turns out to work then I guess I can deal with it.
They absolutely can not ignore free safety though.
And for the record I don’t think anybody in the 5th would have been an upgrade over what we had. That’s why I was so upset about not taking one of the impact guys early. There were game changers available all the way up to the 3rd. Again though, the draft is over so it doesn’t matter now.
