Max Ramirez recalled, Taylor Teagarden optioned

Wow.

Teagarden has been terrible, but Max Ramirez isn't hitting in AAA.

I am wondering if this is short-term, or if the Rangers don't expect Jarrod Saltalamacchia back anytime soon.

UPDATE -- And apparently, Jarrod Saltalamacchia has been activated from the disabled list and has also been optioned to AAA.

ANOTHER UPDATE -- Evan Grant says the decision to option Salty was driven in part because it means that he can't come up for at least 10 days, and the team wants him focusing on getting his work done in AAA, and not worrying about when he's getting called back up.  That is...interesting.

Hey!!

I am glad to hear this!! Way to go JD. And I hope Tea gets a new swing while he is there because he could be a good ML catcher.

I have no one to blame but myself.

I feel like I’m at the track and just saw the horse I bet 100 bucks on come in last place. By 40 lengths. Then snaps his leg two steps after the finish line. As the jockey gets thrown off and smashes his head against the rail.

I hope somewhere along the line Tea can show something. Ugh.

I think a better analogy would be...

that you bet your $100, and when the horses break the gate your pick seems to have no clue how to run.

The idea that he’s just marking time before his callup screams “entitlement” to me. I think it was JW that mentioned that coming out of ST.

What I observed about Salty at ST was that he seemed to walk around

like he owned the place while Treanor & TT both kept their heads down and tried not to break the eggshells they were stepping on.I know nothing and have heard nothing about how the organization felt about him but it was an observation.

The fact that the FO wasn’t happy he left Winter Ball early, made it publicly known that he appeared “sluggish” at their pitching camp in January and that the catcher’s job in 2010 was up for competition plus ripped his ass in the press for not telling them he was hurt on Opening Day…you add all that up and what happened yesterday shouldn’t have been shocking to Salty.

Hard to disagree with that.

Short term?

I am guessing that Salty will be back up in 10 days anyway. They say he is throwing ok, and he sure is hitting! but is striking out too. I think the issue with Max is whether he or Treanor will be the backup for awhile. If Ramirez hits, it will be Salty/Ramirez. If Ramirez doesnt hit, it wont matter, it will be Salty/Treanor or if Tea does well, he might return in a couple months and it could be Salty/Tea especially if Ramirez doesnt hit. It seems all up to Ramirez, now, whether Ramirez will be the backup. At least he is getting a shot for a week, which could turn into a couple months or more…

He is a real light hitter though. Max had no errors or passed balls in spring training or so far this year until today, and his pitchers are apparently being handled well, because the Redhawks lead their division, and Max has a good OBP

"A real light hitter" is an upgrade over Teagarden by quite a bit.

Teagarden is rocking an OPS+ of -35 (100 is average) and has one hit on the year. Treanor has one less game played but seven times as many hits. His OPS of 42 looks like Nelson Cruz compared to Taylor Teagarden.

Holland to replace Harrison in rotation? Then would you send Mathis down or trade Nippert/Francisco?

by goodasgoldyesmaam on Apr 27, 2010 6:25 PM CDT up reply actions

Yes on both Holland and Mathis

Correct me if I’m wrong here, but I think Mathis still has options left. We still need two long men because of Harden and Harrison could be valuable in a variety if pen roles.

by BoReed on Apr 27, 2010 6:27 PM CDT up reply actions

Mathis

Yes, Mathis has at least one option. Nippert doesnt. I wouldnt mind if the Rangers traded Nippert (average, not real effective, may have trade value and would open a roster spot that is now inflexible because of no options) or Francisco (not as effective as last year and never a top closer and gone after this season anyway, probably, and would open up a roster spot).

If they merely send down Mathis, that would be OK too. He is a little more effective than Nippert though and is more flexible, due to youth and options and the fact that he could start or relieve, esp at AAA.

Matt Treanor will be the Rangers’ primary catcher. Ramirez became the choice because his defense has improved and, said Daniels, the .265 Triple A hitter with no home runs and four RBIs provides a quality at-bat. Ramirez has a .345 on-base percentage.

This Thing

is starting to have the feel of a team being run by MLB. We have no money to go outside the organization so what the hell, get Max up here asap.

nope

All about sending a message that if they players don’t perform, they will be demoted. Sounds like Nolan to me.

by MikeEl on Apr 27, 2010 6:40 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't have a problem with this

…given the options they have. Teagarden has no clue what to do with a baseball bat, and isn’t all that great on defense. If Ramirez’ .345 OBP can translate even to a fucking .200 OBP it will be a giant improvement. And if his defense has gotten better, that’s good.

I assume that once he’s here for a week or two he’ll take over the starters’ job for Treanor. No future there.

by Black Francis on Apr 27, 2010 6:45 PM CDT reply actions

I don't think anyone has a problem with these moves.

Each one had to be done and if the reports of Max’s improved defense are accurate we’ll be a lot better off.

Agreed

I was just afraid that Wash would not let it be done

I think thinking Wash has slightly more influence with the roster decisions than Newberg

And that slice is trending towards Jamey.

Dear Tea and Salty,

You’re both such awful catchers that the team on April 27th has neither of you on their 25 man roster.

You suck.

For the record, I like your son Mr. Salty.

His injury situation is just incredibly frustrating. I wish they would hurry up and figure out what the deal is with his shoulder or whatever the problem seems to be. Our catcher situation is killing us.

I'm gonna bash

any player who says he can go with an injury and can’t. Seen enough of that crap through the years. Nothin worse than a guy dragging the team down because he physically can’t play ball, and prevents the team from getting a replacement that can.

Teagarden trade

remember that when they thought he had value, they thought we had plenty of catchers…they wouldn’t have traded him for a catcher..at least he’s here in case of emergency

by Alemc on Apr 27, 2010 7:56 PM CDT reply actions

As this team flounders and issues abound,

JD says “Screw the lot of you. If you don’t cut it, we’ll make a change.” And he did. The Teagarden thing is a no brainer, but they have definitely put Salty in his place on this. Don’t worry about when you are coming back, but worry about getting your shit together and WE will decide the best route for you.
