10-11
What a weird game.
Rich Harden and Neftali Feliz were both pretty awful, but they get the win and the save, respectively.
I suspect we'll hear tomorrow about Ron Washington having another sit-down with Elvis Andrus, after he got picked off for the second time in two games.
I tend to think that Andrus's extreme self-confidence leads to situations where either he's a little careless, or else he's too aggressive in terms of what he can get away with. Both Mark Buehrle and Jake Peavy caught him leaning, which is an error of aggressiveness. I'm thinking he'll be getting a talk about maintain focus tomorrow.

Kinlser looked good tonight
He had a nice line drive 1B to CF follwed by a stolen base. His second hit was a broken bat looper to LF. He wasn’t tested much in the field.
Thank you Houston for drafting Jason Castro.
What's wrong?
How was his velocity tonight? His secondary pitches?
Thank you Houston for drafting Jason Castro.
1. He gives up too many runs
2. I have no idea the reason, that’s why they should figure out how to have him not give up so many runs. Worked VERY well for Holland so far, so it’s just a suggestion

Feliz has pitched 10 2/3 innings
He’s allowed 7 runs.
I don’t think he’s broken to the point he needs to go to AAA to get fixed.
by Adam J. Morris on Apr 28, 2010 10:20 PM CDT up reply actions
Me neither
But he isn’t the best choice for closer right now. And he isn’t helping the team in the majors right now. And it is still possible/likely that he will be a great starter for the Rangers for many years. So develop that in the minors.
by Mark from OC on Apr 28, 2010 10:21 PM CDT up reply actions
Okay
What do you think he’s going to do the rest of the way out of the pen?
Post a 6+ ERA?
Is 10 innings in the first month to convince you he won’t help the team in the majors this year?
by Adam J. Morris on Apr 28, 2010 10:23 PM CDT up reply actions
Nope
He will turn it around, but he won’t be the best in the pen the rest of the way. The Rangers are pulling the trigger quick, and Feliz has to not hurt the team game after game. A change needs to be made, whatever it is… it worked for Frankie, change that is.
by Mark from OC on Apr 28, 2010 10:26 PM CDT up reply actions
I don't understand your thought process here
Why does a change need to be made?
by Adam J. Morris on Apr 28, 2010 10:29 PM CDT up reply actions
He has hurt the Rangers in a couple of games
And came close to doing the same tonight but barely made it out. You know your closer can’t do that at any point of the year. Isn’t that why the Rangers swapped him out with Frankie in the first place?
by Mark from OC on Apr 28, 2010 10:31 PM CDT up reply actions
Think about what you are saying
You are saying that a closer cannot hurt his team at any point of the year.
But that happens. Closers will blow saves. Feliz has not been good in his last two outings.
If you think a closer who struggles two outings in a row should lose his job and be sent to the minors, then Feliz should go to the minors, but you’ll end up with no one in the bullpen before too long.
by Adam J. Morris on Apr 28, 2010 10:33 PM CDT up reply actions
4 games not 2
In his last 4 games, he has given up 6 runs. A closer can’t do that. Again, isn’t that why the Rangers pulled Frankie?
by Mark from OC on Apr 28, 2010 10:38 PM CDT up reply actions
4 games?
He pitched fine on 4/23. He gave up 2 runs, but that wasn’t because he didn’t pitch well.
He had a scoreless inning on 4/25.
He gave up 2 bombs on 4/26, the first time he tried to pitch back-to-back games.
And he struggled today.
That doesn’t warrant sending him to the minors.
And the Rangers pulled Frankie because his stuff, his command, and his body language was horrible, and because Feliz is better than Frankie anyway.
by Adam J. Morris on Apr 28, 2010 10:40 PM CDT up reply actions
Giving up 2 runs and blowing a save is pitching well?
That is a tough arguement to sustain.
And I originally asked if his pitching warranted sending him to the minors to perform a Holland-esqe fix. Because I would much rather see Feliz as a long-term start for this team. But if not, then let him regain his abiltiy to not give up runs and help the team when he does.
by Mark from OC on Apr 28, 2010 10:45 PM CDT up reply actions
Did you see the game?
He got two outs, then gave up an infield single and a dying quail that should have been caught, but the outfielders were playing back to protect against an XBH. He then gave up a single up the middle.
He didn’t pitch poorly. Sometimes you pitch well, and balls fall in. It happens.
And I don’t understand what you mean by sending him down for “a Holland-esque fix.” I don’t understand why sending him down is going to fix him any better or faster than keeping him in the majors.
by Adam J. Morris on Apr 28, 2010 10:47 PM CDT up reply actions
What you said in your last sentence
If you are agreeing he needs to stop giving up runs, he should do that in the minors, not in the majors where it hurts the team now. I don’t care which is faster, just don’t want the runs in the majors.
by Mark from OC on Apr 28, 2010 10:49 PM CDT up reply actions
By that reasoning,
any pitcher who gives up runs should immediately be sent down. So who would be left in the bullpen?
by Josh Garoon on Apr 28, 2010 10:50 PM CDT up reply actions
Okay
He’s given up 6 runs in his last 4 outings. Your position is that that performance warrants demotion?
What are you going to do if, say, Dustin Nippert were to give up 4 runs tomorrow, and 2 runs a couple of days later?
by Adam J. Morris on Apr 28, 2010 10:51 PM CDT up reply actions
Performance as the closer
I would have no problem with having Frankie moved back to the cloer role – second chance for the season. I would have no problem moving Feliz to a setup role like he was in before. But I would prefer to see him developed as a starter in the minors instead of him struggling as a non-top reliever in the majors.

Or Scott Feldman, who has struggled his last couple of outings?
by Adam J. Morris on Apr 28, 2010 10:56 PM CDT up reply actions
I have no problem moving Harden into long relief
If he had continued to struggle. Less chance to hurt the team. But he had a turn around game today, giving up only 3 in 6. So there is no need for that.
If in his next 5 starts, Feldman didn’t have 1 quality start, went 0-4 giving up 20 runs, would you bring him out for the 6th start or move him to the pen to work things out?
by Mark from OC on Apr 28, 2010 11:00 PM CDT up reply actions
Wait, you're calling Harden's game today a turn around game
and Feliz’s outting worthy of him being sent down.

He did get lucky with some well-placed double plays
But when has Harden ever gotten many ground balls before? I’m not saying his start is what I would want to see in game 1 of the playoffs but pitching to contact from time to time is a nice step in the right direction, if you ask me.
Well, hey: if Feldman gave up 4 runs
in 5 complete games, losing 4 due to poor run support, I’d definitely move him to the ’pen.

Johan spent alot of time as a long reliever
in low leverage situations. Not a very good comp. imho
Thank you Houston for drafting Jason Castro.
Better to send him to AAA.
Remember, Johan was a rule 5 his first year in 2000. His second year he only pitch 43 innings partially due to injury. In 2002 he started in the minors and was recalled on May 31. They used him as a SP until Sept when he went back to the bullpen. Likely to limit his IP.
Thank you Houston for drafting Jason Castro.

Blanco is a plus defender at SS, 3B and 2B
Arias is limited to playing a mediocre 2B.
We can’t forfeit our backup infielder, and we still need a backup 1B. Arias simply has no place on the roster once Kinsler comes back.

And has been mediocre defensively at 2B. He apparently can’t play SS or 3B, so if he sticks instead of Blanco, we have no backup at SS or 3B.

Arias has been about as good as he ever will be, and he isn’t that good. He will never be able to sustain his current batting average, and he still only is carrying a 722 OPS. He can’t play SS or 3B due to his weak arm.
If there ever was a chance to trade him, and maybe get something, like a AAAA catcher, or maybe even a backup catcher, now is the time.

But, much less impossible than we thought two weeks ago.
SSS, though.
Mostly because it makes me feel better, though…

he's young
in a role he has never had before. He needs more refinement.
Thank you Houston for drafting Jason Castro.
or maybe he just needs scrap this closer thing and become the best starter the rangers have ever produced

At the risk of sounding like Joe Morgan... they've been pretty inconsistent though.
Especially the curve, which seems to go all over the place.

the scouting report is probably
to sit on the FB because he is inconsistent with his secondary pitches. he needs to make adjustments. Can he do it in the MLs?

Rangers starters...
are developed by being regulated to the bullpen and having to beg their way into the starting rotation now, duh.

I missed the game.
How in the world did Harden combine 6 IP, 5 BB and only 87 pitches? Seems like a weird formula.
Yep.
He got pretty lucky. Still not locating his pitches well at all. I’m about ready to see a DL trip or something. The guy is all kinds of off. When he was throwing strikes he looked good. Inducing weak contact for the most part, got a couple of Ks. Problem is he wasn’t finding the strike zone on a consistent basis.

But he was still able to get people out with it when he was able to keep the ball in the zone. Either way, he’s off.

[Ed. note- I think I copied all the exclamation marks… not one hundred per cent sure, though.]
Chris GO YANKEES YANKEES NUMER 1 ,27 CHAMPIONSHIPS
How much sense does this make? Answer: A lot. A lot of a lot.
Lynn Chris must be a White Sox fan
And Lynn here read good? No! Bad read do!
Will I always have come backs, haha unlike some people chris i’m not band wagon fan.
I wouldn’t be posting that on FB- I mean, that’s stuff you keep between you and your doctor, but, you know, that’s just me.
Ryan No idea about Chris… but he has a New Yorkers nose. BIG OL’ HONKER THERE! Way to go Ranger

Wait.
I’ve always thought of New Yorkers as having big noses, but I didn’t realize that’s a Jewish thing.
I've never heard that
But I do know there’s a large Jewish population in New York, and the Jewish stereotype includes a large nose, so I put two and two together and got verclempt.
So, Ryan, this might be an apology to you. You may be a fine American and a good example for schoolchildren everywhere. I’m sure you’re a firefighter or plant a lot of trees or something.
Or you’re a dopey anti-semite. I don’t know.

But wait, there's more!
The FB MLB Rangers feed includes updates when a certain Newberg purs his MLB.com column up.
And out come the wolves that have frontal lobe deficiencies;
KirbyBring back Blalock
277 OBP.
Enrique amen to that Kirby..they are dumbshits for letting our most clutch hitter go
277 OBP!
Randall when they get really good the Rangers have always let them get away……
277! OBP!
Enrique Blalock was a beast..i do like Smoak though
277!! OBP!!!
Marky Tettleton Did someone really type Blalock and clutch in the same sentence? Good joke. I literally laughed out loud.
277!!!…
..wait…
what the hell is that last guy doing commenting on these Facebook feeds?
(Fun fact: I did change his name to be a funny clip on ‘Micky Tettleton’. I’m such a pill.)

The Rangers were also 10-11 at this point last year...
They then went 12-3 in their next 15 games.
The Rangers in 2008 were 7-14 at this point in the season and then went 9-6 in their next 15 games and got back to .500 by May 17th at 22-22.
So, while Ron Washington lead teams appear to have a pattern of stumbling out of the gates in the first 20 or so games, this appears to be the point where the teams have picked it up and started to claw their way out of the hole.
Let’s hope that’s the trend continues as the Rangers have a bunch of games against the AL West and a soft schedule altogether the next couple of months so it would be nice if they could get themselves out to a lead.

The negative 1
comes when we appeal that Borbon play at home plate and are awarded the win.
couldn't a manager go argue and play
a game under appeal? can they still do that and what is that process? I remember Mr. Johnny Oates doing that one time

yup
you have to say you’re playing the rest of the game under protest right then, though.
so i wonder why wash didn't do that the other night

You can't protest that play
Well, you could, but it wouldn’t do any good.
You can protest in a situation where an umpire gets a rule wrong, like the Pine Tar game, not a situation where they just get a call wrong.

The Rangers have...
1 more against Chicago, 3 @ Seattle, 3 @ Oakland, 4 at home against Kansas City, 3 at home against Oakland, and a series @ Toronto. The first game of the Blue Jay series will represent the last game of the next 15 games.
I’d say 10-5 is what you have to hope for, and it is realistic. Anything above that would be awesome, anything below would be disappointing.

Marteen and Kinsler --- Go Rangers!
I went to Frisco and saw Marteen pitch tonight. He wasn’t at his sharpest and perhaps got squeezed a couple times. At one point he walked off the mound thinking he had strike 3 to end an inning, but the ump called it a ball. Hitters were making good contact against him for the most part, especially in the last few innings. He gave up a HR that was largely helped out by the wind.
Kinsler looked good. He got 2 base hits of the line drive variety. Kinsler stole 1 base in the game, but seemed to get up awkwardly, but it didn’t seem to hinder him running. He went to a full run and had to stop abruptly a couple times, and it looked like his legs (ankle) handled that quite well. On defense he just missed a diving play, but made another nice play up the middle showing he’s still got his range. Overall he looked good.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
the last couple innings they were
making good contact, most definitely. He was fortunate a couple line drives were hit right at somebody, and 1 sharp grounder to 3B was turned into a DP to get him out of further trouble.
I don’t know that the HR would have been a HR without the 25 mph winds blowing to LF.

yeah, a friend of mine was there with me, and I had to explain that we’re catching the best LH prospect in the minor leagues (one of them) on a bad night.
the problem with many people that are unimpressed, they usually only point to the radar gun where he’s hitting 91 or 92, and don’t understand the quality of his secondary pitches.
