Jarrod Saltalamacchia to the disabled list
T.R. Sullivan says the Rangers have put Jarrod Saltalamacchia on the disabled list, and have purchased the contract of Matt Treanor from Oklahoma.
I'm pretty sure there will need to be a 40 man roster move to get Treanor on the 40 man (a necessary prerequisite to putting him on the 25 man roster).
This is...discouraging, to say the least.

I'm beginning to think
a trade for a catcher is likely later this year. Bengie Molina when Posey is ready?

$4.5 M this year
and I’m going to go out on a limb and say that after the ownership deal has finalized they can afford $2+ million in a mid-season trade.

If getting rid of Hicks
means a return to paying 2 or 3 million to crappy players like Bengie Molina, then I don’t want it.
Go Rice Owls!
If the alternative
is a catching combo with a .660 OPS than Molina looks like a decent alternative. He was a hell of a lot better than either of those guys the last couple years.
All of this is quite premature, of course. I wouldn’t make a move if I were them until July, giving both catchers time to show something.

Problems with his surgery or whatever they were talking about this spring.
Maybe further arm issues that the TOS didn’t solve? It’s a very odd question to ask a lawyer who has no connection to the team what the medicial possibilities are for a possible injury to a player. In short: I don’t fucking no, dude. It just sounds fishy.
Well
I was wondering if you meant medical issue or some sort of disciplinary thing or some sort of roster evaluation.

My guess is medical...
….and my guess is they have no clue why he is in pain/sucking.
It could be a “trip to the DL” like we did with Chan Ho Park for several months in his last season here. Chan Ho then did like 10 “rehab starts” in AAA. If Salty can’t throw the ball to the pitcher, then he is a liability.
Wow, conspiracy theory much?

Are you saying the same thing about Salty? It seems odd that they came to that conclusion after the 2 games he just played

Sitting out 2 games and being put on the DL are two way different things

Yeah, let's be honest, it's not a giant cash outlay in the grand scheme
"Dying ain't hard. It’s living in the wake of a thorough public humiliation that’s hard.--JDT217
It doesn't burn an option
It actually saves it since technically hes part of the ML team the entire season. if he isn’t 60’d then next year will be his last option year while hes rehabbing from TJ surgery. 60ing him will give him a full year of service time.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
I think the option for this year has already been burned...
…Lucas lists him as on Frisco’s DL not the big club’s. I’m pretty sure he had to be optioned to AA in order to be on Frisco’s DL (which of course means he’s earning a minor league salary at the moment).
I have no objection to man walking on the moon.
He hasn't spent enough time in the minors for it to definitively be burned yet
If you spend less than 20 days in the minors I believe you don’t burn an option for that year. I believe that time doesn’t start until games actually begin so even though he was optioned during spring training he hasn’t actually spent a day in the minors until games start tonight. I could be wrong on that part but I think its right.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Yeah, but he'll clearly burn an option by remaining on that DL
He’s not coming off the minor league DL in under 20 days.

Laird had less power than Barajas, and completely sucked ass at framing pitches. My guess is he cost the pitching staff Ks and handed them some BBs.

Davis vs lefties
hit .279/.323/.593 in 2008. let the healing begin.
You sit Davis vs 1 lefty to give him a day off. you don’t sit him against 3 lefties in a row. You have to show him that he’s your every day first baseman until he’s not. That’s leadership, that’s confidence in your players. When you have a guy you are expecting to be a major contributor to the team for a long time, you don’t jerk him around. (otoh, when you have a guy you KNOW is gone after the end of the year, has whined and moaned around the team for 3 years, all while cashing a big fat payday contract and not done shit during it, then no one gives a fuck if you jerk him in and out of the lineup, right mr Blalock?)

Exactly
It’s a good example of how unpredictable catchers (and prospects in general are) and that even when players are highly regarded you just don’t know. And it’s still too early to completely write off any of the three, but it’s been awfully bumpy thus far and Ramirez doesn’t look like a catcher defense-wise.

Not a good plan, IMHO
even “star” catchers can be roller coasters. Russ Martin was outhit by Bengie Molina last year. Chris Snyder looked pretty solid a couple years ago and earned an extension, then fell off a cliff. Catchers are mysterious and the ones you can count on year to year are few and far between.

I wonder if it's linked to how many games they catch the previous year.
For example I’m expecting Suzuki to fall off a cliff in the next two seasons as he’s being run into the ground – we don’t even have a backup catcher on the 25 man roster.
Martin runs (ran? I’ve not seen him play recently) pretty well for a catcher, but Kendall showed that being behind the plate takes away your legs eventually. On the other hand Molina’s never been fast.
Perhaps we should consult Posada and ask him how he’s managed to stay so good for so long.
He steps to the left, he steps to the riiiiiiight. That Amos Roberts, he'll make you look shite!
Yeah, I think it's definitely relevant
Unless you have Pudge you’re probably smart to limit your starting catcher’s innings behind the plate. I can’t see any wisdom in starting your catcher more than about 135-140 games no matter how awesome they are.
Martin played 155 freakin’ games in 2008. That’s just nuts. Even Pudge never started that many. In 1996 Pudge peaked at 143 games at catcher, with 6 more as a DH. Martin started 145 at C in 2008, and 10 as an effin’ 3B. Jesus, you just do not treat valuable assets that way.

Kinsler will not make the road trip.
Is it a safe assumption to say MaxRam won’t be a catcher ever again? If it were’nt for those wrist, I’d have a little more faith in him.
Now where’s that shovel? I gotta get an early start to digging the Rangers grave so I can get to the horse track tomorrow. FML.
I figured this would've been cut-and-pasted into this thread by now, but I haven't seen it.
From Evan Grant:
[Saltalamacchia] needs to mature," Washington said. "He has put us in a bad situation. What if he had walked last night and we tied the game? Was he going to tell me then that he couldn’t catch. I don’t care how badly he wants to play, you can’t just think about yourself. He was supposed to be healthy when we left spring training. That’s what he told us. I’m not disappointed in him for being hurt; that happens. I’m disappointed in how he has handled it.
Great.

That's pretty effed up there.
Sounds like the younglings don’t know how to grow up.
Let’s hope CJ doesn’t do anything stupid like that today.
CJ is most likely older than you

yeah
I was thinking the same thing though. it’s a fairly legitimate complaint, though I don’t know the point of bringing it up now.
This is actually way worse than Mendoza pitching hurt – we had no backup catcher. we would have been effed.

LL was begging to have Garko back last night when Wak made a late inning move
that had them without a backup catcher. They were pretty hamstrung. They were not a happy camp last night.

Salty you have become the nightmare on Ballpark Way...
Tea it’s time for you to man up and take the lead or be designated to a life of back-up catcher duties.
Now performing in the Mark Holtz room, Elvis sings you ain't nothing but a groundball.
PUDGE!!!
Please come back…

Rumor has it
that all of Salty’s back/shoulder/rib problems are all re-aggravations of an old high school injury derived from a fall from atop a teachers desk.
