T.R. Sullivan on pending roster moves

T.R. Sullivan says the Rangers expect to activate Nelson Cruz tomorrow, with Ryan Garko being optioned, and then activate Joaquin Arias over the weekend, with Craig Gentry being optioned.

I still don't really understand why a team would want Joaquin Arias to be part of its four man bench when it already has Andres Blanco, since the list of things Arias does better than Blanco seems to be limited to "hit singles," and there's not much call for a pinch hitter with no power or plate discipline on the team.

On the other hand, someone has to be the 25th man.

Cruz

It will be so awesome to see him again. Seems like forever.

I’m kind of surprised they didn’t bring up a pitcher for at least a few days.

This reminds me

I didn’t like seeing Smoak pinch run for today. The winning run was on 3rd, Smoak on 1st at the time, so it’s not like you were depending on him to score from 1st, or steal to get in scoring position. And if the game goes on (which it did, of course) I want Smoak at the plate, not Gentry or Garko.

Ceterum censeo, Ron Washington esse delendam

by t ball on May 13, 2010 6:09 PM CDT up reply actions

that's what is confusing me

on a 6-4-3 it’s the batter’s speed that might spoil the DP – mostly
Is the small chance Gentry’s speed will make a difference worth losing Smoak from the lineup? not so sure

by shroomer on May 13, 2010 6:22 PM CDT up reply actions

Garko hasn't been good

but Arias just doesn’t fill a roster need. IF Kinsler was still injured then Arias would be the best choice. Its sorta bad that we don’t have the right option, unless its maybe MaxRam but then we need a catcher. Maybe Gentry and Arias get optioned and we call up Richardson.

What do voluntary mean?

The dude abides.....

by JKolar on May 13, 2010 7:25 PM CDT up reply actions

Arias is out of options

And with Kinslers fragile health history and the fact we have Davis down in AAA we have a much more pressing need for a 2nd MIF type than a backup 1B

I didn't like it either

9 times out of 10 a pinch runner won’t make a difference in breaking up a double play unless the hit and run is on anyway (or he’s stealing, as mentioned above).

ok

you’re also negating the fact that gentry might have had the steal sign to get out of the double play

also the fact that after that out, they probably would have put gentry in anyway since he would have been the tying run at second. this is really just bitching for bitching

by ab03 on May 13, 2010 8:24 PM CDT up reply actions

no

The fact that David Murphy was thrown out at home doesn’t make this move okay.

I'm not saying I don't understand the reasoning, or why it was done

I’m just saying I don’t like it. I’d rather take the chance and have the hitter I want. I understand Washington’s reasoning, and I am not calling him out for making a bad move. I would have considered leaving the bat in the game, though.

Ceterum censeo, Ron Washington esse delendam

by t ball on May 14, 2010 12:01 AM CDT up reply actions

it seems odd that with a runner on third and less than 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th

you have to think about what’s going to happen in the 11th. you should play for the win right then. getting out of the double play makes that happen.

i understand you’re not really complaining as loudly as others but there are plenty of people that are doing it and it is annoying. there are good reasons to complain about wash. he actually did nothing wrong on thursday.

by ab03 on May 14, 2010 12:08 AM CDT up reply actions

Partly, it's a reaction

to the difficulty they had driving in runners today. I also thought of it the other day in a similar situation. I realize, also, that if Smoak is left in and then thrown out, everyone would have been calling for Washington’s head.

Ceterum censeo, Ron Washington esse delendam

by t ball on May 14, 2010 12:37 AM CDT up reply actions

This situation brings up the question of

whether you continue to pinch run for Smoak in a year or two when he develops in two a top of the lineup hitter? To me, it’s obvious you don’t. Even now, the only time you should PR for him should be when he’s the lead runner with one or no outs in a very close game. In a game where one solo HR can end the game, the drop off between Garko and Smoak’s offense is too much to lose. Ultimately, it’s a judgment call that requires a smart manager to make an educated decision, and currently, I don’t trust Wash to make those decisions.

As much as I love beer, I've never indulged into microbrewing.

I work with a guy that talks to me about it all the time and it sounds like a lot of fun, but I just don’t have the space to do it.

When did you start up?

by lost in space on May 13, 2010 6:25 PM CDT up reply actions

8 years ago, after getting kicked out of the Air Force Academy

I figured it was a cheap way to drink, and had seen my cousins doing it when I was younger; after an initial $65 investment, you can make 60 pints of beer (16 oz each) for $25; and it’s a lot tastier – and you’re a lot more proud of it – than buying a 24 pack of ‘stones, not that there’s anything wrong with that.

I live in a condo; not too big, and you can get away with the very basic form of brewing (from kits) or even progress to the next step (partial grain brewing); but you’ll need a garage and/or giant patio surface for a propane system to do all-grain. I have never done all-grain, and I’ve been very satisfied to date so far.

That's decent, but towards the bottom of the pecking order.

The DogfishHead lineup is a good place to start. The 60 is the “light” one. The 90min is what I do for desert. The 120 is an aging beer; very special stuff.

Lots of specialty IPAs out there these days .. HopHenge, HopDevil. All good stuff.

sorry if this was discussed earlier but anyway…

saw on yahoo a blurb about molina (who btw is a good player) upset with ESPN for making fun of him. i don’t watch espn so i missed the sportscenter. youtube has the clip here

basically, he thrown out at home on a play that most players would have beat by a mile. they show the highlight with chariots of fire as background music (after calling him fleet footed). i don’t think he was dogging it, i believe he was running his ass off. face it, he’s a big guy, a catcher.

will someone please explain to me this logic

why does it make a difference if they win or lose? In fact, just the opposite could be true. LeBron gives Cleveland their title and then he leaves for the big bucks…

Ya know...

at the start of the season I thought the Celtics would be tough to beat in the East, however as the season went on it looked like they were aging in dog years. I had pretty much no hope that they would beat Cleveland. Happily, I was wrong.

I feel similar about the series with the Magic. Hopefully I’ll be wrong there too.

The difference maker for the Celtics is Rondo. The Big 3 is now officially the Big 4.

Yeah...he's pretty incredible.

That he plays great defense as well really sets him apart from some of the others. A Nash v Rondo matchup in the finals would be great television.

New York?

I don’t see how much bigger NY can make him. He’s already got the endorsements, he’s the face of the NBA etc. Even if they add another FA, unless he really wants to play with Gallo, he should go to the Bulls.

Best player in the world,

and not very likable, imo. I was glad to see Noah call him out, his emoting has become very tiresome.

I don’t think he’s a bad dude by any stretch.

by scoop16 on May 13, 2010 10:43 PM CDT up reply actions

The emoting? I dunno.

I guess that leads to the ‘skins on the wall’ argument. Different times for sure. The media overflow on Jordan definitely was a major contributor to the athlete we see today. ESPN at the forefront.

I can’t imagine Jordan doing the stuff that pissed off Noah either. The posing from that team with ‘Bron in the starring role became a bore(especially when you ain’t won nothing).

Another factor is Jordan came to national prominence winning a national title as a 19 year old. Heady stuff for sure. But James was an SI coverboy at what, 16? Destined for an ego. Probably would affect most in the same way.

Well, I suppose they could bring Moscoso up

He’s the only guy on the 40 aside from Scheppers/Ogando who would be an option. He last started on Monday, I think, so you’d think he could go an inning or two if they needed to use him tomorrow.

by LSJ on May 13, 2010 10:28 PM CDT up reply actions

Actually, check that

Looking at Shroom’s site, Moscoso went yesterday and threw 100 pitches. Don’t know how I had Monday.

So he’s unavailable, and there’s nobody on the 40 besides Scheppers/Ogando they could call up to be a fresh arm – and they’re prolly not quite ready to bring one of those two up just yet, especially Ogando.

Scheppers isn't on the 40 yet

Although cutting Garko opens up a spot

Why option Garko first?

Why not just DFA him and then outright him when he clears waivers?

by We're_Texas on May 13, 2010 11:10 PM CDT reply actions

He has options I believe

But has to be run through waivers before being optioned

I think however what was meant was he is being DFAd and thus released. I don’t know where he would play down in OKC

See the video of him crushing a giant HR in a softball game?

It was mammoth… although it’s slow-pitch and the arc of the pitch looked a lot like the arc on his HR.
