Friday a.m. Rangers things

Taking two of three from the A's at home...not bad at all...

Ray Buck's game story has the players saying that they aren't paying attention to the standings, they are just trying to win games.

T.R. Sullivan has quotes from C.J. Wilson, with C.J. saying he didn't have his best stuff, but is still disappointed he gave up a run.

Nelson Cruz returns to the lineup tonight.  Sullivan's notes indicate that David Murphy will return to a reserve role, and Ryan Garko will be put on release waivers to give him an opportunity to sign with another team.

Gil Lebreton has a column on Wilson's conversion to a starter, and how he's changed his approach in making the switch.

Jean-Jacques Taylor has a column about how the Rangers expect to win, and need to take advantage of a weak upcoming schedule.

Jeff Wilson has a story up about the Rangers sale situation.

Boy, this quote from Wilson’s ownership article sure makes you think that maybe the long-standing quote in my signature was right, eh?

Though Ryan said Selig did not reveal how or when he will move, he made it clear that he wants to go forward after months of haggling with the 40 lenders who hold $525 million in debt piled up by Hicks Sports Group.

Apologies to Dirk, but I'm afraid I would have to end things with extreme prejudice if that happened.

Good god I hate that movie. More than I hated Wizard of Oz, I think. Which is saying something.

Those are like the worst movies in the history of mankind, and nobody even realizes it.

But I digress. I’m not sure why I’m hitting post on this, really, but maybe it’ll make someone laugh.

I think soda pop would be better

Just because “soda pop” just sounds like something that could help more with the whole talking things out part than “beer”. Not that beer isn’t great, but I could definitely see myself still killing someone after I had a beer with them. But right after I had a soda pop with them? I dunno, man.

I have never watched the full SoM, as I don’t need to see the whole thing to know of its suckitude. But the Wizard of Oz, geez, what a terrible movie. It’s one of those movies that people say is great just because it’s something they feel like they’re supposed to say. No one truly likes that crap.

The only musicals I can think of truly enjoying were comedies.

South Park the movie.

Team America.

And that one play I saw about spelling where there were actors in it.

There may be others, but for the most musical numbers that aren’t funny are just a bad idea.

They’re a terrible way to tell a story.

They just are.

The only musicals I like: "O Brother Where Art Thou?" and "The Blues Brothers"

I don’t think either qualifies as a musical, but in my world, they’re the only kind of musical as I will support.

I agree, it’s a terrible way to tell a story. I don’t understand the purpose. A bunch of singing and dancing to explain a story? How about just effing tell the story?

It’s an odd movie, for sure. I know some people who absolutely hated it the first time they watched it, but came around, and others that still dislike it.

Me, I loved the concept of retelling an ancient myth in an American settings. That combined with great old-time music was good enough for me.

Yeah, to a point.

I like country….but the county that I like is just not classified in the modern sense of the term “country music.” I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning by Bright Eyes is a country record, pure and simple, and sogood.

But yeah, if I don’t like that silly whatever that music is, I probably won’t like the movie as a whole.

My Favorite right now

is Townes Van Zandt. If you’ve got something against country music, you’ll probably hate this. A lot (but not all) of his songs are dark, and sad, and twangy and can’t sing worth a damn.

But his songs and lyrics are truly brilliant. Pancho and Lefty was a song of his made famous by Willie Nelson. Lungs is a powerful song about his collapse into drug abuse. He’s truly brilliant if you don’t know his music.

Actually, no

South Park and Team America were both musicals, I guess. South Park: Bigger, Longer, Uncut dragged a bit and many of the “Saddam Hussein is gay” jokes got very old, but Team America is fantastic and one of the most underrated comedies of the last decade, easy.

I agree with Showalter that the starter's routing

of pitching every five days mitigates (somewhat) the increase in innings. It’s easier to have a routine then to be up and down multiple days in a row and pitching maximum effort in high leverage, late innings situations all year.

Showalter’s point about Cole Hamels is a bit off, though, since his ERA was misleading.

I am continually impressed by his focus. Bad strike zone calls, balks, errors behind him, nothing has gotten to him this year. He’s a freakin’ rock of ice out there, cooly planning his next ground ball inducing pitch. He’ll give up some homers eventually, of course. But his ground ball rate and man-on-a-mission focus makes me think he can keep the extra base hits to a minimum and remain a pitcher with an ERA in the mid-3’s even after regression.

If Lewis keeps striking out one of every four batters, and Wilson and Holland both maintain ground ball rates in excess of 50%, they are going to be a great 1-2-3 punch in the playoffs.

actually

depending on who I’m facing, I may prefer Harden to pitch game one.

Imagine this team is facing CC Sabathia. An extremely good tough lefty who the Rangers simply aren’t going to hit (or I guess any lefty, craftier the worse for Texas).

Anyway, by virtue of who the other team is running out there, the Rangers are probably going to lose that game regardless. Harden is the ultimate boom/bust pitcher – he may dominate, giving you a chance to win a 1-0 game; or he may get killed. But even if he is average, something Harden doesn’t do all that well, you’re going to lose. So if you spot me only one run, I’m going to pick Harden as the fall guy and hope he has a miracle game in that arm.

The team just more than held its own

against several top of the rotation pitchers. You don’t give up anything in game one no matter who is pitching, that’s crazy. You risk eviscerating your bullpen, too, if Harden is still throwing like that.

Right now I’d stack Wilson or Lewis up against anyone. They’ve shown they have it in them.

Don’t want to get all LSJ on you, but I can’t get too optimistic from winning a bunch from the Royals, A’s, and M’s. It is great that Lewis and Wilson are doing what they can do against those anemic offenses. But I’m not quite ready to say that either of them stack up very well against everyone in the league, given that this offense is still a huge negative against a certain class of pitcher.

But we play the As and Mariners a bajillion times this year. Destroy those teams all year, do a little better than .500 against the rest of the league, and it’s playoff time.

Team walk rate

8.9% right now, vs. 7.7% in 2009. I’m not going to just credit Hurdle for that, but I think the team taking the step of replacing Jaramillo with Hurdle and talking up a patient approach so much encouraged several players to make that a goal this year. It’s showing.

Kinsler, Cruz, Hamilton, Andrus, and Young all have higher walk rates right now than last year, and Smoak replacing Davis is another plus in that area. Max also has a good history there.

I'm trying to decide if I believe the higher walk rates will stand up over time.

I definitely believe this is a shift in approach for Andrus. It might be for Kinsler and Young.

For Cruz, it seems to be the continuation of a trend that started in AAA a while back.

I don’t know what to think about Hamiltong, since his tick up seems minor compared to previous years, since he in those previous years he’s had similar rates. It appears to me that his performance boost over last year is likely from regaining his health for the most part.

by BEW on May 14, 2010 10:07 AM CDT up reply actions

It really is an interesting question...

Here’s a comparison of some of FanGraphs Plate Discipline numbers (MLB rank):

First Pitch Swing : 09- 61.2 (30th); 10- 58.2%(18th)
Outside Swing : 09- 27.4 (27th); 10-30.0% (27th)
Zone-Contact%: 09- 85.1%(30th); 10- 86.9%(21st)

For the O-Swing%, I think this is being inflated by the Outlier known as Vlad. The second highest on the team is Borbon at 40.2%, third is Blanco at 37.5%. Vlad is 49.1%. Insane. Though, you could argue that it’s counteracted by Elvis Andrus and Nelson Cruz, who are at 17.8% and 20.4% each. That’s good for 11th and 26th best O-Swing% in the majors.

Overall, it seems like the Rangers are taking more first pitches and making better contact. They have not become awesome at those two skills, they have merely moved from the worst in the league to below average, but it’s making a big difference. Their current OBP is .330, 17th in the majors. Last year, it was .320, 24th in the majors.

And then came Smoak and there went Davis to OKC.

It’s a fluid situation but for the last 20 games, our OBP has started to improve greatly.

I applaud JD’s boldness in bringing up Smoak and shit-canning what was becoming a very entitled Davis to OKC.

JD recognized that Davis killed the team last year, that the numbers we saw in his come back were indeed a fraud and that he wasn’t going to let Davis kill another season.

One thought on moving from relief to starting

sparked by the article on Wilson:

Wilson’s time in the bullpen has served him well, Washington thinks.
“When C.J. gets into trouble, he doesn’t panic,” Washington said, "because he’s been in tougher situations before. He seems to make the pitches that he has to.
“He knew he had that quality. And now we’re beginning to find that out.”

Late innings high leverage situations mean a pitcher has to figure out how to handle tough spots. Wilson is thriving and keeping his focus in these situations. Perhaps this bodes well for guys like Feliz and Scheppers making a transition to starter at some point. Perhaps it’s nothing, I don’t know.

I can see that

It seems like that is a common ailment for many of this team’s young, high ceiling pitchers – they do great with no one one but have trouble with guys on base. Kind of makes sense too – when pitchers are dominating in the minors they simply aren’t used to having base runners and pitching in trouble, simply because they’re dominating and don’t get in trouble.

I liked CJ's attitude of his complete game

CJ Wilson can't possibly be any good.

As everyone knows, you can’t learn anything about starting while pitching in the bullpen.

Well, to be fair, the real test for Ceej is coming up

When he starts exceeding last year’s IP total, which is where the real fear begins.

But, I don’t wanna LSJ everyone’s good times, so let’s shelve that.

At the rate he is going

even if he is only good for 120-150 innings, he still is probably worth more to the team.

Should we have Wilson fake an injury

so he can go on the DL so he can avoid a real injury due to too many innings?

But does he go for that amount of innings, walk up to JD’s office, and say ‘Hey, I may be getting tired. Whatsay I just take the rest of the year off before my performance drops and we call up that hot Kirkman dude while I go tweet, flex my muscles, wear a hoodie, and not be injured?’

No, it’s uglier than that if he can only go that far.

Kasey Kiker

This was discussed some last night on various threads, but warrants mentioning for the full daytime crowd. By all accounts, his start yesterday was atrocious, but Hindman, writing on BBTiA (is this a temporary thing or is he becoming a contributor?) says it was much, much worse in person.

Kid has to be injured, right? He’s lost velocity, he’s completely lost control, and Hindman says his mechanics were terrible, all over the place, and different on seemingly every pitch.

I really hope it’s an injury, not because I wish ill will on him, but because it would be a much more reasonable explanation than him just falling completely apart. At least with an injury he can get it diagnosed, rehab, and get things put back together.

Regardless, it’s a bad deal.
