Still one more roster spot in OKC, or does that need to be Garko’ed?

Santana was activated and Vail sent down to extended at HIC ...

but I don’t see who got dropped when Nam was added. I wonder if NeRa’s stinker last night got him sent back to extended or if Trevor Hurley was bumped up to BAK to replace Eppley. hmmm

no reply. Sometimes that means he’s gonna use the question for his newsletter – he’s done that before to me. Otherwise he answers any question I throw at him promptly. No joy this time. Maybe somebody else should ask him.

Good stuff on the relief promotions

I’d like to see Phillips challenged in OKC so he can join the bullpen as the second lefty as soon as he’s capable. Looking forward to see what Eppley does against the Texas League.

Need to figure out if Paisano can actually get on base in a real baseball league and place, not just the moon-like hellscape of Bakersfield.

As long as Vlad and Smoak continue to hit, there’s little chance he helps out in Arlington, but he could be very useful come trade time.

Bob Hersom writes up Mitch Moreland
Moreland has played 27 games in right field and one game in left field for the RedHawks, all error-free, in his Triple-A debut. He has hit .324 since May 2, raising his season average from .211 to .248 with three homers and 19 RBIs.

You know...

I feel bad for the guy. The only reason he is down in AAA is becasue he can’t throw the ball back to the mound. Treanor filled in nicely but now he looks awful at the plate and Ron doesn’t want to play Max. Salty can be very useful at the plate, I think.

What a shame.

I don't know why he is not playing right now

but I fear some sort of “injury” again, since otherwise they can have him DH if he can’t catch.

by Telegraph on May 15, 2010 8:35 PM CDT up reply actions

I bet they...

are working with Salty on the side since I read they had him change his arm angle. Also, if he keeps throwing the ball in CF, his confidence/mind is going to be fucked up.

At least, that what I hope is going on. I don’t want to think about the negative side right now.

I wouldn't be surprised to see that happen. It's primarily up to Moscoso, I think.

I think Strop might even stay. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Ray go down when Arias comes back.

I don't understand the Ray hate around LSB.

I understand that his K/9, BB/9 and FIP suck. He also won’t maintain his low babip. But, he is a RP and those numbers are easily skewed by a poor outing or two. He has only allowed a run or an inherited runner to score in 4 of his 18 appearances which is pretty good for a RP.

I've never heard anyone claim either way - so I assume it's fairly accurate.

Back when Feliz was pitching there his gun readings were consistent with what we know now. Scheppers hung at 95-96 there – touched 98 – same numbers as the OKC gun shoots him. Seems like a reasonable gun.

by shroomer on May 15, 2010 9:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Sometimes it's up or down by 1 MPH

It’s usually pretty accurate, but when it’s off, it tends to be a little fast.

Randomly, it throws some readings that are about 5-6 mph below normal – and of course, there’s also the random 111 or 37…

Better than last year.

Probably still slightly below MLB average, but it’s improved. He’s changing speeds with it a bit (anywhere from 77-84 assuming the high and low readings are somewhat accurate).

Last year, it sort of looked like a weak curveball. It had a hump on it, and it was fairly easy for batters to pick out. At times, he would throw it with downward plane and it played much better.

The break seems better this year, and he’s throwing it downhill nearly every time. He still needs to refine command of his change up.

I think Beavan has a decent chance of taking his slider to the solid-average level, and it should play up with his command.

Part of an agreement between teams and MLBAM.

Included mandate of identical website designs for all teams. Changes didn’t kick in until 2010, though. Some teams weren’t too thrilled about it, nor were competing design firms who lost their contracts.

Someday ...

SB Nation and MLBAM will meet in an epic battle. The winner will change it’s name to Skynet.

by shroomer on May 16, 2010 2:37 PM CDT up reply actions

And I will be elected president of Skynet.

contrary to what Shroom said over in the post mortum thread

there is something interesting at Frisco today.

TT 0-4 with 2 Ks.
Madrigal on rehab, 1Ip 1H
Eppley’s first AA appearance 2IP 1H 1BB 2K

and the pitchers are still wanting some real OFers.

Thank you Houston for drafting Jason Castro.

Eppley looked pretty filthy - lotsa movement and a frisbee off-speed pitch.

The one ball hit hard [triple high off the CF wall] had a pressbox camera angle so I don’t know what happened – hanger or whatever. The remaining sparse contact resulted in easy 3-hoppers to the IF’ers. We’ll see if hitters chase all that stuff darting away from the zone in AA – so far most do.

Is he the next DOD, in waiting?

The club actually asked DOD to work with him during the spring, both on mechanics and mindset of being a sidearmer

DOD made a joke about how he was teaching the kid to steal his roster job.

Yeah, that's what I was alluding to

Twas beseeching an impression from that rapscalion shroom, but alas, he hath spurned my quest for erudition.

very DOD-like

but he’s a big boy, like Eric Hurley or something – so it’s a different look – maybe not quite so submarine – Dennis Eckersley?

Can I pull out the Jump-to-Conclusions Mat and order my ticket to Cooperstown for Eppley's induction as a HOFer?

Thanks, shroom.

I wanna hear Z and NNoC's take

maybe mjh if he saw him – looked nasty to me, but I’m an idiot

Threw hard today.

Normally more of an 85-87 guy, was hitting lots of 89s on the stadium gun. Good deception on the slider.

The triple was a fastball at the knees. The batter went down and smoked it.

I’ll want to see how his fastball plays when he’s not riding high on his debut in front of a big crowd. With his movement, I think these results will be pretty typical. His BB-rate will be interesting since now he has to actually think a little about where he puts his pitches.

Yes, I know comps are crazy dumb

But perhaps more like Donnelly, but bulkier?

FWIW - listened briefly to the BAK game

The San Jose radio guy said Brigham was sitting 95-96 – was impressed with his velo.

I was surprised to see him ranked highly in the Professor’s evaluations. I have to learn to stop doubting that guy.

He’s apparently a totally different rapist than the dude I saw doing mediocre rapes for Hickory last year.

This is awesome.

RTusk40 Just found out I’ll be making my first AA start Tuesday :)

He takes Kiker’s rotation for now. Wonder what they will do with Kiker.

good for him

He got stretched out a liitle bit last week when he relieved Martin. He hasn’t allowed a run in his last 14IP covering 5 appearances.

Thank you Houston for drafting Jason Castro.

Cool

He’s been pretty impressive in AA so far

Good stuff

I’ll be interested to see how Wild Wilmer fares in the gravity-free zone that is the California League.
