Rangers Mock Draft (pt. 3)
I am representing the Texas Rangers in a 3-round mock draft that will be held over at John Sickels' Minor League Ball blog on June 5th. There is an organization diary set up there but I wanted to post this here as well so that anyone interested in making suggestions or discussing possible Ranger selections can comment.
I have attached another poll, this time listing four high school position players that have a reasonable chance of being available for the Rangers at No. 15, their first selection. The poll for college hitters is here, the poll for college pitchers is here -- a poll for high school pitchers will follow.

Some other options:
Nick Castellanos, 3b (Florida)
Stefan Sabol, c (California)
Chevez Clarke, of (Georgia)
I’m not sure Machado or Sale will last in this mock draft to No. 15. I also wonder – if it comes to a choice between one of these HS players and UTA’s Michael Choice, who prevails?
Choice
He’s the most signable, may be ready soon, and offers upside. There was a take from Law on ESPN Insider where he referenced Choice’s power as a possible 80 on the scale. He’s gonna run into strikeout problems down the road, but he’s a worthwhile pick at 15.

If we take a high school player, we’ll have to pay him whatever he wants or else risk losing the pick entirely. It would be a dumb move to take any of these guys, because you would have to pay too much, and that pick would prevent some overslot deals later in the draft. I understand BPA, but we don’t have that luxury with this pick and with our budget issues. It sucks, but I don’t think there’s any chance the Rangers take a HS player at 15 unless it’s a huge reach…like…beyond Hobogod. And any reach like that would be silly, since we can get that player at 22 or even in the supplemental round. Affordable college player all the way at 15.
This is beyond dumb.
You think if we took a high schooler who agreed to sign for slot that he’d then reneg on that deal and we’d lose the pick?
There’s a difference between saying we can’t go for an overslot HS kid and saying we have to go affordable college kid all the way.
A Kasey Kiker type who agrees to sign for slot is totally a mother fucking option.
Don’t know why people reject this notion.
It makes my penis so angry.

We should cancel our plans to meet in a seedy hotel and get it on via doing a whole slew of gential-based sex moves on each other.
Too bad.
I was gonna do such nice rapes on you.

This is almost as disappointing as seeing another Mavs question/Fanpost by Adam.
My heart is crying.
"I don't really like pitchers." - Nelson Cruz
Fair enough
Who are some high schoolers who would sign for slot? Which of those would be unavailable at 22? If we just had 15, then sure it would be another story. But why put yourself in that position when you don’t have to?
affordable HS'ers
I could see us reaching for Tyrell Jenkins or Kevin Gausman, but it’s likely that both would be there at 22. If we wanted a set of two specific high school players, then reaching for one at 15 might make sense. But there are other guys at 15 who will be affordable and available at 15 who probably won’t be there at 22: guys like Choice, Wimmers, and Grandal. I would rather have any of those three above a 2nd tier high school player a la Kiker.
I like Justin O'Connor
great tools set, good athleticism if not plus size, excellent mound prospect but bat is his primary tool, offers multiple options defensively -SS now but likely 3B or C at next level, worst case -power hitting 2B. Like him a lot. Would love to see him brought into the system at C with plenty of time and patience to development.
