Rangers Mock Draft (pt 4)

I am representing the Texas Rangers in a 3-round mock draft that will be held over at John Sickels' Minor League Ball blog on June 5th.  There is an organization diary set up there but I wanted to post this here as well so that anyone interested in making suggestions or discussing possible Ranger selections can comment.

I have attached another poll, this time listing four high school pitchers that have a reasonable chance of being available for the Rangers at No. 15, their first selection.  The poll for college hitters is here, the poll for college pitchers is here -- a poll for high school position players is here.

Poll
If available, who should the Rangers take with the No. 15 selection (high school pitchers)?

I love draft talk

But would it really be so bad to either make these fanshots, or just collect them into one post?

Yeah

It sure would suck to have the “Saturday Night Open Thread” bumped off the main page too soon.

Well

I guess I might feel differently if these threads were generating much discussion, but they’re basically just polls. I’d rather see discussion myself, so I’d just as soon see a dedicated post with draft talk.

You're focusing too much

on guys who either won’t be there or who are not realistic options for the Rangers. Even without the team sale imbroglio the Rangers have some extra picks that means stretching their draft budget farther. And the team sale and the necessity of picking an easy sign at 15 further constrain that first choice, and possibly the second.

I’d prefer you went with a fairly realistic strategy mirroring the reality the team faces right now.

This is how i see it

With the 15th pick im sure the Rangers would LOVE to get Michael Choice however i have heard that the A’s are in love with the guy so he wont fall past them at 10. However, you never know on draft day so I would still say he is realistic.

Ranuado has had some rough outings but he is still a big time talent. His agent is Scott Boras, nuff said. Even IF he is there the Rangers will NOT pick him.

Brentz is another guy that could be there at 15 and I think is reasonably signable.

Eibner is probably the safe route for the Rangers at 15. I know that would make some people sick but the Rangers like their pitchers athletic and while Eibner would be a reach at 15, he would be a quick sign most likely.

Vitek the 2B from Ball State is a fast riser that has been talked about with the Rangers. Perhaps he would be an easier sign as well.

Yordy Cabrera would be a great fit for the Rangers at 22. I think he is not necessarily an easy sign but also not a ridiculously hard sign. The Rangers can definitely be more aggressive with this pick as they could be a replacement pick next year.

This is how i see it ultimately:

15 – If Choice is there, he is the Rangers pick. Plain and simple. I dont think he will be there though. So im thinking either Eibner or even Vitek (high rising 2B from Ball State).

22 – Vitek if they dont take him at 15, Cabrera if he is still on the board, or Eibner if Choice was the first pick. Perhaps a small possibility that Bryce Brentz could be had if available.

Ideally, I would like the rangers to go for position players this year but the budget constraints that you mention really, for lack of a better work, suck.

Nice write-up

It seems Choice is the choice … the question is whether he makes it down to 15. I have not seen Vitek projected to the first round yet, but with signability a concern for many teams, who knows.

Thanks.

How about...

I wouldn't mind him at all.

I’d be cool with him at 22, depending who else is still on the board. I’d be real happy if we somehow landed him with a supplemental pick, but that seems unlikely.

I really want Micah Gibbs from LSU

But there’s a bit of bias there

Gibbs

I think he’s an acceptable pick if someone jumps on Michael Choice.

Gibbs started out

in this range, and then slipped on some boards, but I couldn’t figure out why. Still seems solid to me.

I like him more in the supplemental round

For me its Grandel, Choice, Wimmers, Vitek, Brentz, Ebner at 15.

I would love Wojo at 22. BPA and I’ll be happy.

Reggie Golden, Groyko, Avilies, and Wates are a few names I hope are available in the supplemental round

Part of it that he isn’t throwing guys out as well this year, he doesn’t have a standout tool, and his walks are down. I think that it was more to do with other guys stepped up and passed him. Sounds more like he is a supp/2nd round guy now.

I would love for Grandal to fall to 15 but he probably won’t, and after him I’m not that hyped about the other guys. Of the guys I could see at 15 I would like Choice, J. Sale, Allie, or Workman. Choice would be an obvious pick (local, signable, good), Sale is a very good bat and sounds signable, Allie would have the highest potential for the pick and BA just ranked him as the number 2 RHP in the draft, and Workman should give good potential/signability as far as college pitchers are concerned.
