Tuesday morning Rangers things
Jeff Wilson's game story this morning talks about Derek Holland, and how he's learning to have a short memory and not beat himself up over allowing runs.
Evan Grant says that the Rangers need someone else in the bullpen to step up, to avoid overworking Darren Oliver.
Vladimir Guerrero talks about playing against his old team.
Josh Hamilton got the day off yesterday, although he wasn't happy about it.
Yesterday in the minors, Kasey Kiker, Clay Rapada, Fabio Casillo, and Kennil Gomez were all put on the disabled list.
Kevin Sherrington has a column up about Jarrod Saltalamacchia and his ongoing throwing issues.

The Holland/Feliz bookends to that game
made me a happy Ranger fan.
Who’s the prime BP candidate to ‘step up’ and take more innings for Olly? Nippert?

Two good stories
The Holland/Feliz bookend was great. Newberg focused on that, as he should since his roots are covering the minor leagues. The fact that those two were on the cover in 2009 + Andrus in 2010 (and his play in the 8th) make for a very nice story.
Go find a national story on the game, and it’s pretty good too. It focuses on the two free agents that moved from the Angels to the Rangers. Oliver & Vlad had nice games last night, and it’s got to sting if you’re an Angel fan.
Lots of times, I hate the national story viewpoint of a game. In this case, the two viewpoints of what the game story was are each fun to read.

Step up candidates
Francisco, Scheppers, Harrison, are some
Ceterum censeo, Ron Washington esse delendam
Well, those aren't the only ones
the Rangers have a lot of depth in bullpen arms and it’s not something we should all be frantic about. Chris Ray looks good in the long run to me, even if he hasn’t thrown all that well at times thus far. Good stuff in that arm. And there are numerous options on the farm. O’Day has done his job, Nippert has been better than most realize here. Really, the bullpen has had some bigtime meltdowns that are coloring our overall perception of them. And they’ve been put in a bad position by Harden and Feldman a few times.
The bullpen troubles are a tad overblown, IMHO.
Ceterum censeo, Ron Washington esse delendam
my bad
I read that as “set up candidates.”
I generally agree with you. I don’t think Nippert is in the proper role. He needs to be the long man. Maybe when Schepeprs comes up in June he will have a role like Perez Feliz did last year and Dustin can return to his proper role.
Thank you Houston for drafting Jason Castro.
That's what I'm betting happens
Scheppers gets a bit stretched out in OKC for a bit, then comes up as a 1-2 inning reliever like Feliz last year.
Ceterum censeo, Ron Washington esse delendam
Frankie's Meltdowns earlier in the season have a lot to do with it, too.
I was taking the comments more as pointed motivators to a select few like Ray and Nippert who could easily see themselves moved in favor or Scheppers or whomever when/if the time comes. Taking a few innings away from Oliver would go a long way in showing you have some value with the big team.

Short versus Long Term
I’m in agreement in the long-term health in our bullpen as well. The worst arms in the pen are expendable and we have a lot of live arms waiting in the minors below.
However the bullpen troubles have not been overblown this far, IMHO. Our current bullpen is carrying half (9) of our team losses (Frankie 3, Nippert 3, Feliz 1, Mathis 1, O’Day 1). That is a lot of games to be losing in your bullpen. Mathis and Nippert have not been very good thus far. We all know about Frankie’s problems (although I think he’s been better than his stat line suggests).
Ok, but that's still only a handful of games
from a couple of relievers. I did not expect much more out of Mathis and Nippert, anyway. Frankie and Feliz had some troubles that we weren’t really counting on, all at once and close together. That has perception going beyond reality, to me.

bullpen candidates
I believe that Strop is going to be a big factor for us before it is all said and done.
15k / 4 bb in 15.2 ip and a .217 baa with 3.0 go/ao so far in AAA.
Hey Tom - It's over now, so do you know how - to pick up the pieces and go home?
Yeah, he seems like a good candidate
as does Phillips, whom I expect we’ll see sometime this summer.
Ceterum censeo, Ron Washington esse delendam
in baseball terms I consider summer June through August
I think Phillips will plug a hole, whether through injury or ineffectiveness at some point before Sept. 1.
Ceterum censeo, Ron Washington esse delendam
I don't.
Who would he replace? Oliver is about the only RP that could go down to injury and the Rangers replace him with a LHP. All others would likely be replaced with Schepeprs, Strop, Beltre, Ogando or Moscoso. Heck, they might even replace Oliver with Harrison instead of Phillips.
Thank you Houston for drafting Jason Castro.
I think they could use another lefty in the pen along with Oliver
any number of things could happen over the course of a couple months. The most likely injury candidate would probably be Ray. O’Day has dealt with some back issues. Feliz hasn’t pitched a full season in the big leagues. Also, Phillips is already on the 40-man, so I think he has an edge over some if the need for a lefty continues.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
It made me happy last night but doesn't long term
Like most here, I think Feliz is made to be a starter, and the more success he has in the closer’s position the more likely it is that he’ll stay there. He’s not really developing in that role, either, so if they do decide to convert him it will make things a little harder for him. Seems to me, though, that’s he’s the Rangers’ closer going forward and that makes me a sad panda.

Jeter makes plays like that all the time. Only they’re about 20 steps to the right.
There are very few players capable of a) having the range to make that stop and b) getting a throw from short left to 1B. The list of players who are capable of doing that AND making an accurate throw to nail the runner, well, I’m not sure there’s more than a couple of guys on it.

I think
he is approaching lottery ticket odds at this point. The franchise needs to really pursue a FA catcher for a long term solution at the position, and use Salty as a backup only. If he steps up and can take the job from the FA catcher, fine, but this team really needs to stop handing the position to Salty on a silver platter, and make him earn it.

I don't think you're right
yips aren’t incurable. It just seems that way because the cases of yips ruining a career are well documented but there are people that come back from it.
What’s more interesting is that he has a 952 OPS in AAA. More K’s than I’d like to see but still very good
I agree
as usual, once Cahill gets down on someone, he overstates his case a bit. Lottery odds is a bit much.
Ceterum censeo, Ron Washington esse delendam
Well,
it is probably overstating, but
1) He has the yips, and I recall more folks having their careers destroyed by them than coming back from them. Maybe its selective memory due to the careers ruined (Knoblauch, Blass, Sasser, etc.) being more vivid than the guys coming back from it.
2) In 794 ABs he is .251/.313/.388. According to Levine’s study, there is a 90% chance he is what we he is.
I think at this point, he should be forced to take the job back from a backup position, rather than being given the starting position next offseason. This season, they need to do whatever they can do to shore up the position.

I agree with all that
I just think lottery ticket is pushing it. I’ve been saying they need to trade for a catcher for a long time and no matter what he does over the next month I’d still be much more comfortable if they made a deal. I can’t really imagine trusting him out there right now.

Catchers are a different beast offensively
Its far from unusual for a catcher to struggle initially and put it together later on. My guess is that if you look closer at Levine’s study, you’ll see the percentages change for catchers and players that are only 25 or younger when they acquire those ABs.

"I am one of the biggest Texas Ranger fans out there but I'm also one of the smartest. Deal with it."

That would seem to suggest
that you should keep Catchers on the farm until their options are all used up to preserve service time. If they peak later than other players, it is stupid to bring them up early.

Except they to really be a good catcher
they need to get experience in big league game calling too.
Why?
This thought that you can only develop in the majors seems somewhat absurd to me.
"No, I'm not a pessimist. At some point the world shits on everybody. Pretending it ain't shit makes you an idiot, not an optimist."-https://twitter.com/shitmydadsays
Well
If you don’t give them any ML time, or very little, while they have options then you are going to be faced with a do or die moment once their options expire. if they then don’t immediately do well you are forced to DFA them and risk losing a potentially good talent for nothing.
The ideal situation is to have a veteran backup in place and your prospect come up and if they struggle you send them back down and revisit them later. But with the Rangers we had so many ML ready prospects and such a tight payroll that going out and spending 1-2 million on a veteran backup wasn’t financially reasonable as well as logistically. Then you would have had 2 guys down in AAA who needed playing time or you would have been forced to keep one guy a level back of where he needed to be at which doesn’t help their development.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
and I think Salty was probably rushed
by the Braves a bit, and then his development time was convoluted by how the Rangers used him here.
Ceterum censeo, Ron Washington esse delendam
Or it could be
that like most high school catchers, he just wasn’t going to pan out regardless of what you did.
"No, I'm not a pessimist. At some point the world shits on everybody. Pretending it ain't shit makes you an idiot, not an optimist."-https://twitter.com/shitmydadsays
What seems like a leap
is when every prospect fails, it is somehow the fault of the franchise for how they used them. Prospects fail. High school catching prospects fail more than most.
"No, I'm not a pessimist. At some point the world shits on everybody. Pretending it ain't shit makes you an idiot, not an optimist."-https://twitter.com/shitmydadsays
I wasn't assigning definitive blame
just saying Salty’s development path can’t have helped things any. Catchers have a difficult enough time compared to other position players, so I wince when teams do things like that to them.

Do things like what?
I don’t really recall the Rangers doing much wrong with Salty. I remember Salty playing like crap a lot, and being injured a lot, and the Rangers were forced to play alternative catchers.
"No, I'm not a pessimist. At some point the world shits on everybody. Pretending it ain't shit makes you an idiot, not an optimist."-https://twitter.com/shitmydadsays
That pre-existed the Rangers
The Braves used him there. I understand that Salty might have been rushed, and might have needed more time in the minors, but its tough for me to say he wasn’t used well in the majors. His defense wasn’t good enough when he first entered the majors to play C.
"No, I'm not a pessimist. At some point the world shits on everybody. Pretending it ain't shit makes you an idiot, not an optimist."-https://twitter.com/shitmydadsays
That's making a huge assumption
that playing in the Majors doesn’t have any learning curve to it for catchers and that they can just sit in the minors for 3 years, come up to the Majors, and act like they’ve gotten 3 years worth of ups and downs already in and are ready to play.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

free agent?
Why not trade? Or are you assuming trade for this season, free agent in the offseason? I’d much rather see them acquire someone in trade, the options are better and younger.
Ceterum censeo, Ron Washington esse delendam
I think a trade is more likely
given the depth of some classic trade chip positions (namely starting pitching)
We underestimate Hunter and Harrison around here, but both would have pretty solid trade value on the market.
Go Rice Owls!
I'm nervous about trading Hunter.
He seems perfect for a rotation that could have Feldman or Harden skip a start at any moment. You would still have Harrison…
It just depends on the catcher. Certainly it seems like a good idea to wait a bit on it to see if we develop a pressing need for starters and if Saltly can come back.

yeah, either one
And it certainly depends on the catcher. I’m not trading Hunter for AJ, for instance. But if the Twins offered Ramos, who has long-term potential, I might think about it.
Go Rice Owls!
Hunter for Ramos
wouldn’t really fit with what needs to be the focus – winning the West this year. I don’t think trading for a rookie catcher to stick him in a pennant race is necessarily the type trade that we need to be looking at.
Hey Tom - It's over now, so do you know how - to pick up the pieces and go home?
Yes, Ramos is not ready to be a major league starter
he’d be a nice option for 2011, but not now.
Ceterum censeo, Ron Washington esse delendam
I would trade Hunter for Ramos even if 2011 is the option
Can never have enough catcher depth! We had that a couple of years ago
anyway
my point is that those two guys may well be two of the nicest trade chips the team has, and two of the best in baseball. They’re both legit major league starters – not too many contending teams can afford to trade guys like them in mid-season deals
Go Rice Owls!
incoming DMN trade idea
Hunter, Font, Erlin, DiFazio, and Arias for Posey.
Oh my god! What can it be? We're all doomed! Who's flying this thing?

well, normally I'd laugh

Hamilton has said in the past that he doesn’t see the ball as well in the daytime, but on Monday he said he’s learned to prepare better for daytime games. Prior to Monday’s game, a Rangers staffer handed out stat sheets in the clubhouse that showed day-night production. Hamilton said he couldn’t stand to look.
“I folded it up, threw it in the trash without even looking at it, so I don’t want to know,” Hamilton said. “I know it can’t be good.”

James Bond coolness

Last night Eric Nadel showed us for the 1,987,456th time...
…that he has zero interest in broadcasting on TV. When discussing Hamilton’s absence from the lineup last night he actually said that he “seemed to be giving away at-bats yesterday.” I tried very hard to imagine either of our TV guys speaking so honestly or bluntly about Hamilton (or even a spare like Blanco) and just couldn’t come up with anything.
In a related story I love Nadel and I am sincerely concerned that his having to deal with Barnett’s ineptitude on a daily basis is going to kill him or force him to retire.
He's not a regular bum, he's a genius bum
Barnett
I didn’t listen to the radio broadcasts much last year, but I’ve caught a few this season, and man, is he terrible, especially when contrasted with Nadel, or even Josh, whose enthusiasm makes up for his dorkiness.

They seem to dislike each other too.
The few times I’ve caught games on the radio, Barnett has said something completely ridiculous and Nadel has made a point to correct him. In fact one time they kind of went back and forth on the issue. I think it had to do with Barnett wondering how an inning would have played out differently if a play had been made. He talked for a minute or two about how things might have changed. Then Nadel said bluntly that he doesn’t believe in that because so many things happen differently. Barnett then agrees but says it’s fun to do anyway, and Nadel comes right back with “I think it’s pointless” or something to that effect.
I’ve also heard them completely contradict each other on how a player is doing. More than once I’ve heard Barnett compliment Chris Ray on his velocity and talk about how he’s completely back to the pitcher he was in Baltimore, only to have Nadel come back with a comment on how poor his command it and that he still has a ways to to be back to the pitcher he once way.
Between things like that, and all the times Nadel has to step in to actually give a view an idea of what just happened on a play when Barnett is doing play by play, I do really wonder if he isn’t driven crazy by Barnett’s ineptitude.
Nadel
The couple times I’ve met him, he seems like a nice guy, but also someone who doesn’t suffer fools gladly.

It does take a long time to develop chemistry
and Holtz/Nadel were a clear example of this when they were first paired.
Holtz was kind of an Old School Homer broadcaster and Nadel was constantly trying to work in dumbass puns. Lots of awkwardness on the air between the two because Holtz didn’t appreciate Nadel’s humor and those teams (’82-85) really sucked.
Nadel eventually got on track and Holtz became more accepting and a little more laid back but(it probably took a couple of years) for Nadel & Holtz to become a very good broadcast team.

Max looked good last night behind the plate.
He stole a crucial strike for Nipples and also blocked a couple of Holland sliders in the dirt. If the wind would have been blowing out the usual direction, he would have had a bomb-ski off Kazmir.
Just to be clear, we didn’t get an excellent outing from our pitchers because of Max but he didn’t hurt us.
Still don’t understand the Treanor substitution in that situation (one-run lead with Max leading off the 9th). Another case of Wash keeping his thumb on a player he doesn’t like/trust. On the Fox Saturday game, not sure who the retired player was but he said when of the best times to run is when you have a catcher come into the game late.
Kind of a nitpick on Wash because he didn’t F anything else up except for having Tiny E attempt another bunt on the first pitch with Borbon on 2nd and no outs. Glad he fouled it off because Tiny E sho’ nuff hit a single.
You need to play for a special manager to lead the AL in sac bunts and also be among the league leaders in average with RISP.

First of all its pretty much a consensus that Elvis was bunting on his own there
And why is everyone worrying about the bottom of the 9th? Unless you have so little faith in Feliz then thats another issue unto itself. Treanor is the superior defensive catcher of the two and it was a one run lead.
I have no problem with Max getting more playing time but people need to realize that those starts will probably come with defensive substitutions late in close ball games.

Because a 1-run game in the 6th means Max will bat at least once more....
maybe twice. It isn’t really that hard.
The Texas Rangers have been synonymous with explosive firepower ever since they emptied 130 rounds into Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow in 1934. - Alyssa Milano
Yes, but if he's good enough defensively to be entrusted with a 1-run lead in the 6th/7th/8th when he's garunteed another PA or two
Why isn’t he good enough to still be back there in a 1-run game when he’s due to lead off the potential bottom of the 9th?
"I think it's funny because everybody wants Ozzie Smith range," Young said. "I want people to show me a guy that has turbo range like that."

You can’t grasp the concept of how his offense has enough added value earlier in the game, and by the 9th it’s all about defense?? really??

No, but it's still a contingency you plan for, IMO.
I don’t think that bringing a cold Matt Treanor into the game is really going to make any difference as to whether the save gets blown or not.
In fact, I’d probably wager the odds of Max coming to bat in the bottom of the 9th are higher than him allowing a PB/WP that ends up tying the game.

I don't really
give a shit what the LSB consensus is…Wash has had Tiny E bunt waaaaay too much this year. He’ll also flash the bunt for a pitch and then take it off. Maybe Jackie Moore asked him what the F he was doing. None of us know.
The late sub for Max didn’t hurt us but that’s only because it was one of those few nights at the ballpark when Napoli’s ball found Borbon’s glove instead of Greene’s Hill.

Its not just the LSB consensus
Nadel said it on the broadcast last night as well.
Showing bunt may be a way to throw off the pitcher with zero intention of actually bunting who knows. You get the defense to play in a little bit, maybe get the pitcher to throw a fastball since you are supposed to be bunting. Just showing a bunt means very little and last night he was bunting for a hit it was pretty obvious.

That bunting for a hit has a high probability of success.
Relative to swinging away.
Although to be fair,
There’s selection bias there, because you’re only going to bunt for a hit when you’re fast, decent at bunting, and think you have a good shot of making it safely.

and every time Smoak gets on late in a game
he’s pinch run for. Wash is an idiot. He does things out of habit, not strategy, like his continual chewing of sunflower seeds to appease his oral fixation.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
Max should play more
and his defense does not seem as bad as advertised. He does a good job of blocking balls, and I think his arm is a little better than Treanor’s.

And I'm guessing we don't see him

I bet we see him when we face Matusz
Don’t know when that day is.
He probably gets 2-3 games a week which I am fine with.

2 to 3 games a week
I agree with this, in theory at least. The team has been somewhat guilty of pushing young players into prominent roles quickly. Borbon as starting CFer I bought into. Borbon as leadoff hitter I was less enthusiastic about, and the two together probably contributed to his slow start. Max can be eased into a more prominent role, but starting more than 2 or 3 days a week as he continues to work on being a catcher might be a bit much to ask.
I’d still have left him in the game last night, though.

Treanor can’t hit his way out of a wet paper bag (granted he has nice long ABs, but no results). Max is by far the better offensive catcher, and I don’t think he’s that much worse defensively, if at all.

This will take care of itself...
Either Salty wil come up fixed, or Max wil slowly earn more playing time until he’s got a 70-30 split in his favor. Of all the things to gripe about, this isn’it it. Our catching isn’t perfect by any means, but has everyone forgotten the STBF-ness of our first few weeks with TT batting???

FWIW, I don’t think his odds are very good, but the only ray of hope I hang onto is that I remember reading somewhere that one of the side effects of his surgery was a slow return of proper feeling/touch in the hands. That’s gotta affect throwing a ball, probably even moreso when it’s a soft toss that depends more on feel than power.

I wonder
You’d hope that doctors/counselors, etc. know more about this sort of thing now than back then and would be more helpful. It doesn’t sound very much like it in the news articles, but I’d hope they have Salty talking to someone qualified in that regard. This is purely mind games, and it can’t be fixed by a manager or a coach.

And just keep your eye on it...
the last 4 times Max has been in the starting line-up, the team has scored at least 4 runs.
With Treanor getting the start, you have 3 games where the team scores 2 runs or less and also The Ned Beatty Game (when Wash constantly played for one run at a time and had what 4-5 sac bunts?)
The Causation Correlation Crowd needs to put down their torches…just keep your eye on it…with Treanor in the line-up Wash has a new toy and gets to play small ball managerial grab-ass.

Treanor also has a .264 BABIP with a 21.4% LD rate
Treanor isn’t doing well right now, but if he keeps hitting the ball like he has, he will have better results soon. Just like with Smoak who has just gotten ridiculously unlucky with his BABIP. That doesn’t mean that I don’t want Max playing at all, but I still like Treanor’s chances of getting a couple of hits in any given start of his.
Also, Max has 4 starts since May 12th and a pinch hit appearance. Treanor has 4 starts since May 11th and a defensive replacement appearance. These guys seem to be pretty equal in playing time now with Treanor coming in late in games where we have the lead and Ramirez coming in late in games where the Rangers need a run.

the team really needs to trade for a starting catcher. Unfortunately, no one here is going to be happy with a) the player they get, because no one great is going to be available and b) the price paid to get him. It’s a shitty situation.

I might not mind a guy like
Chris Snyder. If the DBacks get Montero back healthy, they may be willing to deal Snyder. It’s just like you said, whatever we give up for a scrub catcher will be considered too much. Especially when you remember we traded for Pudge last year. How many times are we going to trade for a catcher at the deadline. It’s really difficult to be in this situation after we had what was considered a glut at the position in prospects just 1 yr and a half ago.

I'd have left Max in there
It’s not like they were putting a knuckleballer out there. Sooner or later they need to give Max the opportunity to prove himself in those situations. I agree that the team obviously considers Max a liability on the glove side, but this seemed a bit scared managerish to me. Someone made the comment last night that if you’re really worried about defense you should be substituting for Young there, and I agree.
Max has a long way to go to prove himself defensively (certainly in the team’s eyes, anyway) but last night seemed to me a good time to leave him in and let him handle it. It’s not like Feliz needs help with game calling there.

Every time the game hits the 8th inning with a 2 run lead or less — I’m moving Young out for Blanco.
That’s like cheating by playing two shortstops on the left-side of the field.
That's neither here nor there.
I think we might all do that. Put it up as a fanpost poll and see for sure… But it’s never going to happen. It will be a major, major milestone when Young is pulled for a defensive replacement. Wash isn’t going to be the guy that sets that precedent.

He'll get over it
I can’t imagine it is really that big of a deal. If he isn’t aware that he is becoming a defensive liability and needs to improve that is completely on the Rangers staff. As the supposed leader of this clubhouse and team captain he should be interested in doing what is best for the team. He’s already getting paid either way.
He'd throw a tantrum, and then he'd ask for a trade.
And then someone in the organization would have to sit him down and explain why trading him would be nearly impossible. “Gosh, Mike, we really would love to trade you, but you aren’t worth a shit. Sorry, bud.”

You are the worst at this, of course.
You evaluate decisions that turned out poorly to see what you might have missed at the time, of course, but you simply cannot use hindsight as your primary evaluation tool, idiot. The team knew the risks with Harden and decided his upside was worth it. Millwood is most probably a middling pitcher, and the team has plenty of those. It was a decision I supported, as did Nolan Ryan, btw, and still do.
You stake out a skeptical position on nearly every decision made by the GM so you can use hindsight combined with confirmation bias to “prove” you were right all along.

It depends...
You evaluate the decision based on the information available at the time – no hindsight allowed.
You CAN evaluate the impact of the deal in hindsight, and you can use hidsight to evaulate whether or not the eventual outcome was predictable. IOW, to evaulate the decision-making process.
Take the Tex trade for example – you really can’t use Salty’s current woes as a strike against the Rangers in that deal. You could, however, use Harrison’s longterm outlook as a strike if you beleive that his outlook was predictable at the time the deal was done.
You could also use Harden’s lack of deep starts as a strike (pun intended) against that signing, as there was plenty of evidence that he wouldn’t eat a ton of innings. However, there isn’t much in his history to suggest that walks were this big of a problem.

When I saw Harden, I saw a pitcher who could not be expected
to give you 150 innings of effective pitching and somebody who had struggled mightily in this ballpark.
Millwood was vexing…I saw a lot of the data and AJM’s rants that he wasn’t very good last year (despite the 200+ IPs and below 3.75 ERA) and that the pendulum would swing the other way but I also place a great value on posting every 5th day.

You've repeated what I said
about the use of hindsight to evaluate the decision making process in my reply to Josey, I agree.
I disagree about Harrison, though. He’s the 4th piece in that deal so I can’t see how his former, current or even future status would affect that deal. They dealt for a ton of potential. Every pitcher carries lots of risk, so anything Harrison does or doesn’t do has basically zero effect on how I’d perceive that deal. Harrison still has potential, and still looks like the 4th piece in that deal, big whoop.
The Rangers were fully aware of the risks in both of these deals. The risk of Harden being injured was well known and they obviously considered it. Millwood looks likely to again have a poor 2nd half, based on his peripherals, wouldn’t surprise me. But whether or not he actually does wouldn’t change my perception of the decision making process that led to the deal. If Harden never pitched another inning it wouldn’t change my mind.
The team KNEW that was a possibility when they made the deal, so I can’t possibly see how anyone could point backwards and say they shouldn’t have made the deal on that basis. You CAN say that at the time you viewed the risk as too great and wouldn’t have made the deal because of it. But you can’t say that Harden’s performance so far proves they shouldn’t have made it. It does nothing of the sort. It merely demonstrates the known risks.
Ceterum censeo, Ron Washington esse delendam
Merely using examples..
I agree that Harrison was a minor part of things, but nonetheless you can use him as a bit of a scoring mechanism. Again, just an example that popped to mind.

gotcha
I’m not ranting at you, it’s just that we all have these cognitive biases at times and I try to fight that here as much as I can. When it comes to trades the vast majority of fans succumb to what experts call Outcome Bias: judging a decision by its eventual outcome instead of the quality of the decision making at the time it was made.
For trades, I think looking back at outcomes is more useful when considering large number of trades in a team’s or GM’s history. If there is a pattern there of continually bad results, that probably says something about the decision making. But to me, evaluating any one trade solely on how it eventually turned out is pure foolishness.

No, you're NOT "afraid he'd be buried by Wash"
You were 100% convinced that he was already being buried out of pure hatred by Wash. Even after it was pointed out that Max & Treanor were basically splitting time, you still carped that Wash was favoring Matt over him. IOW, that you felt Max needed to be the de facto starter.
Sure. you couched it in “just wanna see”, but everyone here speaks Josey code well enough to see throught that massive hedge.

Boggs has had health questions
and the team rarely brings up a young player and plays them every day right off the bat in any case, unless they’re someone with star potential like Andrus. You seem to be forgetting a pretty major point about the way most teams break in young guys. You’re all for breaking in young pitchers in the bullpen instead of the rotation, yet you expect the team to play guys with question marks in their games every day in the field.
Ceterum censeo, Ron Washington esse delendam
Boggs was brought up last year in
late May/ early June and played very sparingly…maybe a couple of at bats in ten days, sat for 10 more days and then was thrown in there v Haren & Zito without getting a chance to play back to back games.
Wash is like “this motherfucker can’t play..” which was also a couple of weeks before he flunked his drug test.

Young player, middling ceiling
not considered a core player for the future, most young teams would not bring a guy like that up and start him very often. You just have unrealistic expectations.

Another step forward for Cruz.
I can’t help but think he’s either stupid or things come slow to him.
Nelson Cruz may have as much physical talent as Josh Hamilton and that’s high praise from me because I consider Hamilton to be the white equivalent to Kenneth or the combo platter of Willie McCovey/Willie Davis….amongst the best physical talents I’ve ever seen in a baseball uniform.

There are times when you make stupid arguments for the sake of throwing JD, Wash, or whoever under the bus. This statement though is the worst of all of those posts. Cruz is dumb because he couldn’t hit lefties in 200 Major League PAs? There’s no SSS problem with that or that it includes his 2007 and 2006 playing time when he struggled against everyone. But right, he’s just dumb or slow because he couldn’t hit Major League pitching right away. Damn, you’re dumb.

Not to defend Josey here
But I believe what he is getting at is that if you expected Cruz to destroy LHP this year then you were doing so under the guise of hope and not based on any actual performance to date from him in the majors. He had shown signs in the minors of crushing them but had never translated that to the bigs in any extended period of time.

Cruz seems to just get the handle of things mentally
later than most.
Phenomenal defensive tools but did a lot of crazy shit last year…dumb routes, careless throws, sloppy fielding of routine ground balls and the coup de grace…tearing up his ankle when he screwed up a ball in the corner in Oakland.
To be fair, I haven’t seen much of that from Cruz this year. He’s been solid in the OF.
He’s a player that seems to be attacking weaknesses (baserunning, defense, hitting better v LH pitching) and is getting better but with that much physical talent, you can’t help but wonder why he hasn’t been a productive player in The Show for at least 5 years.

Tell me what Cruz had done at the major league level prior to this year against LHP to make you think he would all of a sudden start crushing them?
Im glad hes doing it but going into this season our line against LHP was not good. We brought in Garko to be a LH crusher at 1B and Vlad whos killed them in the past and while we weren’t going to platoon with Cruz I think it would be foolish for anyone to sit here and say they expected him to do this against LHP because they have zero previous examples of him doing it at this level. if they truly did expect this from him it was them hoping he would duplicate what hed done in the minors previously which he has and as a Ranger fan is great to see but being realistic for a second there was no way you could have expected this

Based on his MLB appearances only? A lot. FanGraphs says he’s got 168 games and 381 plate appearances (PA) against lefties in his entire career (154 and 347 before this year). 55-60% of a season’s worth of PA’s is not enough to establish a split, especially what would be a reverse split in this case.
Furthermore, the ‘split’ isn’t even that big (BA/OBP/SLG; wOBA):
Career vs Lefties: .248/.320/.445; .324
Career vs Righties: .263/.328/.505; .355

This is one of the only ways to respond to Josey and Grande Esteban when they start talking about how Cruz couldn’t be expected to hit lefties because he never did it in all of half a season’s worth of PAs against them (spread over 2 bad years and one good year) despite the fact that he hit them just fine in the minors and would have to be one of the only players in baseball today (probably true for baseball in the past 50 years too) that has hit lefties just fine in the minors but had reverse splits in the Majors while succeeding against righties. Can someone explain to me why the fucking NYY/BOS games are always the biggest douche bag games I have ever seen?
A-Rod hits a game-tying home run and stares into his own dugout like he is telling his teammates, “Are you guys taking notes?” He is the biggest fucking cocksucker in the game.
Then Papeldouche is just as bad. He has this “tough guy” smirk on his face like he is a natural badass and cannot be touched. I’m glad he blew the save. I’m stoked he blew the save. But, I would of been 100X more happy if it wasn’t A-Roid’s home run that tied it up.
Then, Cervelli gets hit by one of Papelbon’s pitches and stares him down. Really? Just fucking take your base you dumbass. I’m pretty sure Papelbon would of nailed Cano, the previous, much more proven hitter, than hit Cervelli who comes as an easier out IMO.
IDC about all the NYY/BOS rivalry and ESPN butt fucking them both, but those game just piss me off cause the players are a bunch of jersey shore playing bitches.

anyone else seeing a mild regression in his offspeed stuff?
his curve was a lot sharper when he came up and he could actually throw his changeup in situations.
now it’s all fastballs and a couple of floated up there curveballs like the one Rajai Davis got a hit off. if Napoli hits that one on a windy night, we are all talking about something else this morning.
Take this for what it's worth, since it's a next-to-nothing sample size
But according to Fangraphs, the change has actually been a better pitch so far this year. The curve however, has indeed regressed.

well
he’s not working on his offspeed stuff, so it probably won’t get much better right now, especially because Wash just wants him to throw the gas. But, in crucial situations, I’d rather he throw the gas too. It especially affects Feliz on back to back days where his stuff (fastball) isn’t as good. Feliz needs rest to be successful and that’ hard to come by when you’re needed in every late inning closing situation.

OT LAAA Angels are 18-22 with a -35 run differential.
Went to the greatness of Baseballreference.com and looked up the last 10 teams in the AL that I saw who had a run differential of -31 to -40 after 40 games.
The 2006 Twins bolted the gate 17-23 with a -38 run differential but put their wheels back on and finished 96-76.
The other 9 teams averaged 71.88 wins.

there's no doubt the Angels are going to make a run
we just can’t have another June Swoon and September Slump like we did last year.

I don't know about the Angels making a run....they have so many red flags.
Their pitching is awful (allowed 3 less runs than KC) and they play in a pitcher’s park (at least at night). Their offense can’t keep up with what their pitchers are doing to them which explains the huge differential.
Their best players (Matsui, Abreu, Hunter) are old and not necessarily hungry. Old players don’t get better and they tend to get hurt.
They also play terrible defense.
They may have also lost their heart & soul (Vlad) to the Rangers.
The Angels could make a run but they’re gonna have to defy a lot of history- things could change but right now they look like a team that will scuffle to win 75 games.
I still think the AL West is between the Rangers & A’s.

The Angels are just not good at defense.

I feel like the Rangers pitchers
give up really big jumps and half the time the catchers don’t have a chance. Of course, when that bum A’s catcher stole 2B, that’s a pretty bad indicator. Another reason why I don’t think Treanor is that great defensively.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
this is possible
but I don’t count out the Angels. Their defense up the middle is nice (infield). Hunter has lost a step in CF, but is still adequate. There are red flags, but I don’t discount them, as there are red flags with every AL West team.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
Why is there no doubt?
That team does not have the kind of depth they’ve had in recent seasons, either in the rotation or the bullpen. Their #9 hitter is even worse than Borbon has been. I don’t see them surging, though I’m sure they’re not quite as bad as they’ve been at times this year, either.

I think the Angels are stuck and this year was a transition
from their great run led by Vlad, Lackey and Figgins to whoever carries the torch for the next few years.
They had a great, great run but their window of opportunity came when the Red Sox & Yankees were so dominant.

They might not have that one butt-wonderful stud to headline a deal for a super-duper star, but their farm system has more than enough interesting dudes to do some hole filling rapes*.
Conger, Bourjos, Reckling off the top of my head, and Trout, Riot Grrrchuck, Skaggs and Richard could all be dealt, though if they signed at the deadline they’ll have to be PTBNL’s.

But the Rangers also have better major league ready depth
in the rotation and bullpen right now. The Rangers can focus on position players, and pay with prospects instead of cash if they wish. And, actually, the Angels are up against some limits as well. Their payroll is high and there were plenty of writers suggesting this past winter that they couldn’t take on any additional payroll after signing their bullpen guys.

Because they are the Angels

I never thought of this. . .
. . . but the Rangers currently have the 4th longest World Series drought.
Like, obviously I know it’s the oldest franchise to have never gone and the only franchise to have never won a playoff series, but I didn’t realize only three teams have gone longer without a title.
Cubs. Indians. Ummm...Are we couning Washington as us in this?
Pirates, maybe?
Yah, I’ll go with those three, though I’m fairly reall fucking uncertain on the Pirates.
Didn’t the Brewers win one with Yount and Molitor?
Seems like the Tigers got one in the 80’s, too. But that decade was a blur to me cause I was a baby, plus I got really into Miami Vice and started doing tons of coke.
No idea if the Padres are older than us.

Nope, somehow, I think the lack of San Fransisco championships is overlooked.
They’re such a historically successful franchise, and they’ve seemed to have been good for much of their time there, you just assume they won one at some point.
Their last title was in 1954. They went to the series in their 4th year in San Fran and had runners on 2nd and 3rd in the bottom of the 9th of game 7 down 1-0 and Willie McCovey scorched a vicious line drive right at the second baseman. I think the ‘62 World Series is one of the most heart-breaking finishes ever, and it’s somehow never talked about.
I mean, picture that. We’re down to the Phillies 1-0 in the bottom of the 9th in game 7. Elvis gets on first with a walk. MY and Hammy both strike out, but then Vlad hits a double. Elvis somehow isn’t able to score, and then Kinz comes up and hits the ball about as hard as you possibly could, but it goes straight at Utley, who catches it as a reflex. I think I’d give up on baseball for a little while.
Enough of the tangent. Giants didn’t go back until ‘88 when they got earthquake’d. Then in 2002 they had a 5-0 lead eight outs from winning the series and the Angels did what they do.
They got earthquaked in 1989 in the series against the A's
I felt that earthquake pretty strongly 4 hours’ drive south of there.

5. Desmond Jennings, OF, Tampa Bay. Started the season on the shelf with a left wrist injury, but has hit .320/.414/.400 in Triple-A since returning, with eight steals in 18 games. With B.J. Upton not hitting — and striking out like mad — I could see Jennings having an impact in Tampa this season. Previous ranking: No. 6

I was speaking situationally
I understand the hit the first pitch you see if it is good theory, and I buy into that. But at some point, if this guy is serious about ever having another shot at the top of the lineup, that is the at-bat that has to change. A 4-0 lead has shrunk to 4-3. Kazmir has found a bit of a groove. The momentum is slowly turning towards the Angels. Take a freakin’ pitch or two and see if you can’t, you know, walk, which is legal in baseball. I’m not sure Borbon knows that…

I think you’re overreacting. Borbon’s approach has improved a bit lately, I think. Not great, but it’s moving in the right direction.
Ceterum censeo, Ron Washington esse delendam
I see your point
but I don’t think this is an overreaction. That is an at-bat where Borbon has to understand what he is. He is a guy who can get on base and wreak havoc stealing bases etc. The proverbial stealing a run. If that was one of the mashers in the lineup, I’m fine with it. Borbon has to take a pitch in that situation. Not every situation, but that situation it was necessary.

I just don't see why
he HAS to take a pitch in that situation. Was that pitch a strike? He has to take a pitch if it’s not a good pitch to hit. If it’s a strike and he takes it, all he’s done is get behind in the count. Kazmir settled down a bit later in the game, but I don’t recall that pitch, was it a strike?
Ceterum censeo, Ron Washington esse delendam
IIRC, outside corner and he tried to pull it
So, if my memory is correct, he DID swing at a strike, just not one he could handle. SOmetimes, when a guy is going poorly, “see a ball you can drive” fails due to poor judgement of what that ball is.
Of course, with all deference to Hanley Ramirez, I didn’t play MLB so what do I know?
The Texas Rangers have been synonymous with explosive firepower ever since they emptied 130 rounds into Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow in 1934. - Alyssa Milano
In general, I agree that Borbon's approach has been terrible
but I am always hesitant to use one at bat to prove something like that. You don’t want a player to get in the habit of taking good pitches just because you want him to improve his approach. I didn’t see the pitch so I could be wrong about that one, but I would shy away from using any one at bat to say something so conclusive about a player.

being is that you can’t live with two bed-shitters a la The Black Hole ’09 in your line-up at the same time.

Just what i was thinking
That and wondering why with 5 of the first 6 batters being righties in our lineup, we would ever have trouble hitting lefties…
composite line of the 3-6 hitters
895 OPS, that is stout.
Hey Tom - It's over now, so do you know how - to pick up the pieces and go home?
I don't hate that move
I like it now that Kinsler is the hotter of the 2, but I don’t know if it will make much of a difference in the long run. The important thing is definitely getting those 4 together in the lineup. At home, I don’t know if there’s a 3-6 I’d rather have than those guys. And with Cruz there, I’d feel confident saying that its the best 3-6 in baseball for now.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

No one but the Outlaw calls him Tiny E
Because only Josey can feel that someone who has the name of Elvis should need to always be referred to with a nickname.

It's Ticket schtick
And it’s pretty disrespectful to the most wonderful being in the universe, but, whatever.

Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!
The nice thing about Elvis is that we can be pretty sure it doesn't bother him.
Just by the fact that if he didn’t want them to be able to say it, they wouldn’t be able to say it.
It's a terrible nickname.
I’ve never once, even smirked at the thought of that being his moniker.

Hambone isn't the one that needs to be moved in the lineup.
I really wish they would switch Ian for Face. At least Ian hits fly balls that can’t be turned into a DP.
I disagree
Face is actually a pretty decent number 2 hitter. he gets on base. that’s what you need. Kinsler also gets on base. Hamilton has not been getting on base, so needs to be dropped down. I’d like to see Smoak higher, but he’s not ready yet.
eventually, Elvis, Young, Smoak, Kinsler, Hamilton, Cruz, Vlad, Salty (or whoever is catching) and then Borbon (or whoever is playing CF). Yes, Vlad hitting 7th, because once you get down there, he’s cleaning up whatever’s left. You could also move Cruz and Vlad up one and put Hambone 7th, but we’ll see.
Oh my god! What can it be? We're all doomed! Who's flying this thing?

Did we address our problems with OBP last year?
2009 players with 50 PA’s and .400 OBP: 0
2009 players with 50 PA’s and .350 OBP: 3 (Young, Borbon, German)
2010 players with 25 PA’s and .400 OBP: 3 (Elvis, Max, Kinsler)
2010 players with 25 PA’s and .350 OBP: 6 (above plus Young, Vlad, and Cruz)
so, hitting coach or new additions….. well, lets see:
Players who have return from 2009 (min 50 PA’s in 09, 25 PA’s in ’10):
Name, 09 walk rate, ’10 walk rate
Elvis, 7.4%, 14.8%
Borbon, 8.4%, 1.7%
Cruz, 9.5%, 12.1%
Davis, 5.7%, 9.4%
Hamilton, 6.6%, 8.6%
Kinsler, 9.2%, 17.6%
Murphy, 9.9%, 3.8%
Teagarden, 6.4%, 0.0%
Young, 7.9%, 9.0 %
6 of 9 improved, the exceptions being Murphy, Tea and Borbon.
What about the guys we’ve brought in?
Arias 1.9%
Blanco 4.8%
Garko 7.9%
Guerrero 4.4%
Ramirez 14.3%
Smoak 14.7 %
Treanor 8.2%
vs
Blalock 5.3%
Byrd 5.3%
German 8.0%
Jones 13.6%
Pudge 4.8%
Salty 7.1%
Vizquel 6.7%
ok, “brought in” is a misnomer for Smoak, Arias, and Ramirez and we still have Salty and German. of the guys we truly let go, the only one with a decent walk rate was Andruw Jones. But Blanco, Garko, Guerrero, and Treanor aren’t exactly wonderful…. (walk rates that is).
Of course, Guerrero is that unique individual who has a high OBP with a lousy walk rate. and he’s been doing that for years…..
