Minors 5/19 -- Marteen, Thompson

HIC-6:00- Thompson
BAK-9:00- Pimentel
FRS-6:30- Perez
OKC- Off

Shroom's Calender

Star-divide

I was getting my knowledge on yesterday at Statcorner.com when I saw that they have tRA and wOBA for the minors. Cool stuff. Marteen has a tRA of 3.36 (FIP - 2.96) and C-Wun has a tRA of 2.84 (FIP - 2.81). Take that, Marteen. I ked.

Engel Beltre has a wOBA of 0.347 and The Latin Wind's is 0.349. That is very surprising.

Matt Thompson has a tRA of 3.30 (FIP - 2.71). Yes, Miguel Velazquez is pretty good (wOBA - .404).

Perhaps, I should stop doubting Wieland (tRA - 2.86 | FIP - 3.02).

UPDATE: I will also put up the pitchers FIP which you can find at firstinning.com

that Hickory staff is just juicy good with

Erlin in for Ramirez or Font. Also, its time to get Tullis some starts. That guy has done nothing but strike out a guy per an inning and throw a ton of ground ball since becoming a pro.

And Im actually, for maybe the first time in a couple years, confident that Beavan will at some point be a pretty effective ML SP.

Feliz says his greatest thrill was striking out Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz, one of his heroes. Yet, when he called to tell his parents, his mother had a request: Strike out New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez, too.

He has bumped up his K/9 by 3 while dropping his H/9 and keeping his BB/9 the same. Very good trends.

FWIW - Main's outing last night might be better than it looks.

I listened to his 1st inning. Stoneburner booted a grounder by the first batter, and Hasselman got ejected during the 3rd AB arguing with the homeplate ump – big delay and argument. Main kinda scuffled the rest of the inning after the hectic start to his half of the 1st. Settled down pretty well for the rest of his day.

by shroomer on May 19, 2010 2:23 PM CDT up reply actions

I wonder if something screwball was going on in the first while I was watching the boxscore.

Glad to see Main holding his own this year. It’s interesting to watch him learn how to incorporate the whole “pitch-to-contact” idea into his approach in order to go deeper into games.

He’s approaching 50 IP this year and has exceeded 100 IP at Hi-A, I would love to see him promoted, because he’s been steady at BAK this year, but maybe he would be better for him to continue to tinker with his approach without worry of playing up to a new level of hitter, especially since playing up might cause him to over-exert which could lead to an injury which would be devastating.

Pro baseball has always been a dream, so this is pretty freakin’ cool out here. -- Tim Steggall, undrafted Rangers minor leaguer.

Yeah - I was yellin' at Hasselman - dumb move disrupting a prospect's day like that.

BTW, to further my Main-is-Eric-Hurley meme …

When Eric Hurley got promoted to AA he was 20-yrs-old, had 100 Hi-A IP and his ERA was 4.11.

MIchael Main is currently 20-yrs-old, has 100 Hi-A IP and his ERA is 4.14.

Sickels on mini Robbie #2
**Texas Rangers pitching prospect Robbie Erlin made his debut as a starter last night for Hickory in the South Atlantic League, throwing five perfect innings and fanning nine. Combined with eight previous outings in relief, Erlin has a 0.36 ERA with a 31/4 K/BB in 25.1 innings this year, with just 11 hits allowed. A third round pick last June out of high school in Scotts Valley, California, Erlin isn’t a big guy at 6-0, 175, but he has a solid 90 MPH fastball and a big-breaking curve. His command has been excellent this year, and he is also a good overall athlete. I like this guy; I gave him a Grade C+ “with higher potential” in the book, and so far there is nothing to complain about and lots to be pleased with in his performance. He could get well into the B-range by the end of the season.

How do people feel about BA's current mock

with the Rangers getting Brentz and Vitek? If I could push a button and lock down that scenario, I would. I love those two bats.

I have not seen the BA mock, but I saw Jamey's reference this morning

Jamey lists them both as pitchers and a quick Google search told me that they’re both two-way guys. I’m guessing that they’re projected to be taken as bats?

I found a pretty good analysis of Brentz, sounds like he’s an all-around bat with plenty of arm and range to play a good RF, with a Nick Markakis comp. I like the sound of that.

I am highly opposed to drafting for need, but I’m fine with a guy fitting a need position if that just happens to work out. Sounds like Vitek fits that to a T.

It's a weird draft talent-wise at the top

and because of our unprotected pick at 15, our four picks in the top 50, and most of all our precarious financial situation, I have a feeling getting high ceiling college bats is about as good as it gets.

Names in the second tier of the HS pitching pool just don’t get me excited. We have enough arms of that caliber in our system already.

What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.

by clark on May 20, 2010 10:13 AM CDT up reply actions

Vitek came up a few times in the free BA chat yesterday
Burke Granger (Columbus, OH): Are the Indians at #5 a possibility for Kolbrin Vitek? I’ve seen him all over the board (from 5-25) on Mock Drafts but 5 seems high to me.

Jim Callis: Wouldn’t rule that out, but it is a little rich. He is one of the best bats in the draft, and he’s a good athlete on top of that.
Ryan Hall (Abingdon, MD): I know that one hits right handed and the other left handed, but how would compare Zack Cox and Kolbrin Vitek as hitters?

Jim Callis: Very similar. Very good pure hitters, average power, also plus arms on defense. Cox has a better chance to play 3B than Vitek, who becomes an OF, maybe a CF.
brian (washington dc): With the Twins needing middle infield help in the minors why wouldn’t you have us taking Kolbrin Vitek at #21? And what is his ceiling as a player?

Jim Callis: Because he almost certainly will have to be an outfielder at the next level. He has an all-star ceiling—the bat gives him that kind of potential.

This is the scouting report that I assume WestTXAg06 mentioned above on Brentz.

And here’s another.

What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.

All-Star caliber bats in center field are a good thing.

It's starting to look like he might not be around

for our second first round pick, so if we really like him, we may have to take him at 15.

Im still hoping that Choice

falls to us at 15 but that doesnt look realistic right now. Brentz would be a nice consolation. if Vitek is at 22 he is the perfect pick for the rangers considering their financial situation. I think we will see a lot more 4 yr college players than normal from the Rangers

Look at the season Brentz had last year

I think this is a case of Choice being the shiny new toy at the top of draft boards, whereas Brentz had his crazy year last year and this year took a while to get started after an injury. Personally, I would rather have Brentz, who plays against better competition and in a stronger lineup, which means he actually gets pitched to.

Fair points

I wouldnt be upset with either of them. Im hoping that one is available at 15 and Vitek is there at 22. That would be a great first round no matter the financial concerns

which always makes me a little nervous. I remember really liking Beau Mills a few years ago, but there were concerns about his level of competition, and he has hit something of a wall in AA.

I feel alright with Brenz or Choice at 15.

But I’d probably prefer Choice.

Are Ranaudo’s injury questions that serious? Is he this year’s Kyle Gibson?

More importantly, do the Rangers really pass at 15? There’s some history there.

Everyone I’ve talked to about the DSL thing has said it has nothing to do with money. It’s simply about the number of players they have. They let go of a number of players (with more cuts to come) and a ton of them are in Arizona right now.

Miguel De Los Santos, Francisco Mendoza, Denny Peralta, Jonathan Rojas, Randol Rojas, Tim Stanford, Aaron Thompson, Yefry Castillo, Alinson Perez, Santiago Hill, Jhonny Gomez, Oduber Herrera, Junior Payano, Christian Villanueva, Teodoro Martinez – that’s 15 guys that graduated from the DSL to the States this year.

JC was at the game:
The right-hander’s velocity was once again solid, as he appears to be consistently sitting between 91-92 mph from start-to-start, bumping 93 a few times with the occasional 94 mph heater.

and

Beavan locked in after the walk, retiring 12 of the final 13 batters he faced. The lone hitter to reach base did so on an infield single.
.
His command remained strong throughout the game––if not improving in the latter innings––and he held his velocity deep. In fact, Beavan’s first two fastballs of the eighth inning registered at 94 and 93 mph, respectively.

by shroomer on May 21, 2010 2:47 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm becoming excited about Beavan.

It just seems like he’s going to methodically improve his slider, then move on to his change up, and by the end of next year will see some time in Arlington.
