nitpicking

Why did Wash PR Arias for Treanor instead of Blanco. Also, shouldn’t he trust Borbon (and then Andrus) to get a good enough bunt down to advance he runner thus no need for a PR?

Thank you Houston for drafting Jason Castro.

by RangerMad on May 19, 2010 10:36 PM CDT reply actions

I was all for the pinch runner because it got Treanor out of the game

Max had a great AB and big hit in his only PA. David Murphy then screwed the pooch in that opportunity to get Smoak in.

by NothinG on May 20, 2010 7:13 AM CDT up reply actions

Murphy shouldn't have been in IMO

Borbons speed reduces the chance of them actually turning the DP so both a GB and a FB score the run in most cases.

I think the chances of striking out, though is

Murphy << Borbon

But of course Murphy did strikeout, so it seems like a bad arguement on my part. But I think Jules strikes out there as well.

Pinch runner is fine there

And I am on the kill Ron wagon...

But what the umpire described to Ron was a GR double. There are plenty of things to kill Ron for, this isn’t it. Should he have demanded a review? Probably. But he didn’t based on bad information.

Get pissed at the Elvis sac bunt.

not necessarily

there are some parks with special ‘ground rules’ which deal with very specific instances of balls in play.

This is not one of them. This was a home run. This was a fuck up.

not a GR double

in play was what he called it.

Still, I can’t think of one single reason you wouldn’t ask for a replay. If the ump tells you that he’s sure and he’s not checking replay that’s fine. I’m not sure they can or would do that, but I can at least see that. Wash didn’t even ask! What the hell is the point of having it at your disposal if you as the manager aren’t even going to ask for it?

by bdavison94 on May 19, 2010 10:58 PM CDT up reply actions

I thought replay..

Can’t be demanded or asked for by the managers. I mean sure he could have gone out and made a fuss about it, but has a umpire ever changed a call because a manager was doing that? It is only used if a umpire wants to use it and it seems from the post game quotes from the umps that the one who made the double call was smugly sure that it wasn’t a home run and didn’t feel there was any doubt that there needed to be a review.

by BillyG on May 20, 2010 12:03 AM CDT up reply actions

I think if those geniuses as least huddle up and discuss it, they can at least say with some

certainly that it wouldn’t hurt to look at a replay.

But that would be giving these guys some credit that I’m not sure they deserve at this point.

I know certain umps take their role in influencing the game and keeping it being played “the right way” very seriously, but surely they wouldn’t enact some sort of vengeance on managers who dare question their infallibility by asking for replay to be summoned out of the bullpen.

Wash was pathetic in the interview. He gave his line about what the umpire told him and rinsed and repeated it.

The reporters kept trying to think of another way to get him to tell them what happened and they couldn’t. The press conference was quite awkward. You could feel what everyone wanted to say: “Why the fuck didn’t you ask for a replay?”

But everyone was too embarressed for the damn guy to ask that. Pussies.

Wash is too old school. That could have cost us a win. The game has evolved at least some what and allows replays. But Wash is too stubborn to make them use it.

But if Wash is over there at least asking for a replay or for the umps to get together to discuss it, then at least he’s doing what he can. The manager doesn’t get many opportunities in a game to actually make a difference. This didn’t have to be one of those times.

He could’ve very easily said “Well, he didn’t ask so why the fuck should I do it?”, but, credit to DeMuth, he said he wasn’t going to view the replay regardless.

This is the very picture of horrible officiating. I don’t think it gets any lower than “I’m sure of what I saw, there’s no reason to double check,” outside of actually fixing games.

I want someone who’s pro-umpire to come and defend this. I know Horns probably doesn’t agree with it, but I want him to try and defend it, anyway. I just want to hear what some form of support for Eddings could possibly sound like.

I don't know exactly what you're getting at

So I’m just going to respond with this…

Yes the ump blew the call first and foremost. That happens though. They are human and I don’t expect perfection from them. It’s frustrating when the blow a call against my team, but I’m betting over the course of the season that stuff washes out.

However, the manager had a chance to at least push the issue. Seeing as umps aren’t perfect I see no harm in asking for a replay no matter how adamant the ump is. If he had even asked at all I wouldn’t fault Washington one bit. He didn’t and I can find no excuse for that.

2nd part is good

Eric Nadel disagrees with you on the first part. A big part of his incredulity was that the 2B ump took his time making the call, as if he was unsure.

I had the angle

I could see the whole play from my seat — from my angle the ump was in my sightline. The ump signaled safe immediately. He then held his arms out for a good five seconds. When the LF looked at him, he repeated the safe call. I think the 2nd one is what Nadel saw.

One other thing

From Wash’s angle (1st base dugout), it would have been impossible to see for sure if it cleared the wall. The way it hit, and the fact that the back wall is the same color as the front wall — I don’t think anyone in the Rangers dugout could be 100% sure before seeing the replay.

From RF (where I was), it was obvious.

Have you ever seen a ball hit the fence and bouce like that?

Thank you Houston for drafting Jason Castro.

by RangerMad on May 19, 2010 10:57 PM CDT up reply actions

Actually, yes

When there is backspin on the ball and it hits the padding at the top of the wall, it sometimes bounces back like that. Not that hard, but that same angle.

But both Oriole outfielders stopped playing at that point. They were both close enough to the wall that the ball disappeared from view for a second — they knew it was gone. The ump wasn’t that close.

by Oddibee on May 19, 2010 11:00 PM CDT up reply actions

One of the Rockies (Hawpe?) had the same thing happen to him in that Padres-Rockies one game playoff.

Home run clearly over the fence, but it hit something metal (part of a seat, if I remember) and bounced back in to play. Because it didn’t seem like the bounce you’d usually get from something that actually went over, it wasn’t called a home run (and this was before replay, obviously). That shit almost cost them the playoffs.

Very similar situation, but not nearly as bad (ignoring leverage) because the umps that time weren’t arrogantly refusing to double check like a bunch of douche bags.

Depends on the cranking amps, I think. I’ve tried it vice/versa (jumping a small car with a big truck) and it works no problem of course. Not sure about the other way around though. I bet it would work in some cases, probably not in others. Just depends on the cranking amps.

we had a couple days where we were addressing health care for GLBT and there was a psychologist talking about how homosexuality is able to be found a lot younger than they had previously assumed, lending more weight to the genetic argument compared to the nurture argument. This guy who is Colombian and Catholic raises his hand and asks if there was a gene therapy treatment for homosexuality, if a lot of gay people would use it.

Thank goodness the various gay and lesbian people that were coming hadn’t arrived yet….so embarrassing.

I talked to my friends last night and they said it was complete bullshit having to play 4 games in 24 hours, but the NCAA had already pushed stuff back because of the weather. If they didn’t get it in within this window the highest seed was going to advance regardless. I think this years team was better than last years team, by a wide margin.

I wish I could feel sorry for the Mariners or their fans, but I can’t, because Bret Boone would bat flip on us as the Mariners were winning in those years and the Mariners fans would troll the hell out of the ESPN boards to make us feel bad.

Contrary to popular belief, umpiring crew chief Dana DeMuth did look at the replay of Josh Hamilton’s home run-turned-double on Wednesday night. I think the free reign baseball gives to its officials to just be absolutely awful at times and do nothing to make calls more accurate is one of the worst parts of Major League Baseball.

And probably the most fixable. So this is a pet peeve of mine.

So, when something like this happens, “deep end” doesn’t even begin to describe it. I’m more pissed of at baseball right now than I have been after any loss this year.

by philkid3 on May 20, 2010 4:19 AM CDT up reply actions

Imagine...

if you would, Dana DeMuth calls his crew over, Doug Eddings says, “You know, that’s a double. I know it.” To which Demuth responds, “OK, but are you certain of that?” “Well, no, how could I be? I was 300 feet away. But, I know what I saw, and I think it’s a double.” “You think it’s a double? Let’s check the replay. I didn’t get a good look, and while I have a hunch that you’re right, let’s be sure because this is a big play.” “Sounds good to me.”

If that’s what this process was like, AS IT SHOULD BE, I would respect baseball umps so much. Instead it’s just a bullshit process where the game is held hostage in situations like this to satiate the corpulent egos of the bloated embodiment of a way of doing things that doesn’t work anymore and a stubbornness to adapt out of a lousy excuse that failing is a positive because it’s human.

who the fuck said he didn’t look at the replay after the game ended?

by Longhorn on May 20, 2010 12:03 AM CDT up reply actions

Instead of replay, just stick an ump in the press box.

We have umps on different parts of the field to get different angles, why not have a full-time video ump? He could call down to the guys on the field when stuff like this happened, since you can’t get a good angle on this stuff from on the field.

I’d think umps would be OK with it – it means more jobs for them, not fewer – and it wouldn’t slow down the game nearly as much as traditional replay.

by Closure GT on May 20, 2010 9:26 AM CDT up reply actions

They have to strike a balance between never doing any replays and doing 7 fully completed rapes worth of replays every game.

If you replay everything anyone asks for, the games would get broken up and stretched out and boring as ass shit, a la NFL games back in the day before challenges.

You know, the challenge flag rule might be okay.

I dunno.

I mean, it sucks, but I can’t think of a better way to rape this problem to death.

Have a guy in the booth looking at every play, but each coach only gets one challenge where they’re FORCED to all go over and watch the replays of the play over and over again. If he uses it and wins, he gets the flag back. Uses it and loses the challenge, no more challenge rapes for him.

Yah, that sucks.

But it’s better than now.

So that’s something, right?

Shut up.

You do better.

I hate you.

I love you.

College football's booth-initiated-replay confuses me, but I think something like it could work.

A lot of times they’ll wait until the teams are lined up and all before signaling down that they want to replay a play, then they’ll take another few minutes to look at the replay before making a call. It seems like they should be able to start looking at the replay immediately and do it faster; however, I’ve heard anecdotes about the people manning the replay booths in college games not exactly being the most familiar with technology and such, so maybe that has something to do with it.

But for Josh’s HR it shouldn’t have taken long at all. The guy in the booth would hit his “skip back 5 seconds” button and then his slow motion button, see that it was a HR, and call down to the crew in under 20 seconds. He might even have been able to call this one before Wash made it out there.

I don’t like systems where you have to wait for a challenge or something to get the replay process started. I think that’s a big waste of time.

by Closure GT on May 20, 2010 9:35 AM CDT up reply actions

Part of the problem there is they have the on-field refs doing the watching, yah?

The upstairs guys signal down, then the OF guys run over and so some looking rapes.

Why can’t they just put an umpire/ref in the booth upstairs, he looks at the tape and then radios down the call?

Seems like a huge time saver.

I really don't think replay has to slow the game down much, if at all.

Booth reviews can be really ,really fast. Crew chief can have a radio, you have a call in a couple seconds. And any manager who starts to go out to argue a replayed call could be ejected.

by philkid3 on May 20, 2010 12:38 PM CDT up reply actions

Well, the top and bottom of the strike zone would be a batter-to-batter issue,

wouldn’t it? There’d have to be a strike zone guy who resets the top and bottom for each batter. Then we could argue that the strike zone wasn’t set up right for so-and-so.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m for a computerized strike zone. But the current system isn’t it. The zone needs to be three dimensional, which it isn’t. And the strike zone has to be quickly moveable for different height batters, which may be do-able, but isn’t done yet.

Hamilton gets credit for the HR. The Rangers start tomorrow’s game 1-0, Hamilton still gets his AB. The umpiring crew from this game then gets repeatedly kicked in the nuts for as long as it takes for Hamilton to hit another HR.

This should settle it...
Washington said he should have asked for a replay after second base umpire Doug Eddings ruled Josh Hamilton’s hit a double.

“It’s an option that I have,” Washington said. “But when he certainly told me white [ball with] background green. And he was certain about that. I didn’t ask him to review it.”

But even if he did, crew chief Dana DeMuth said the manager would have been denied the opportunity. Eddings ruled Hamilton’s fourth inning homer, that would have tied the game, 2-2, a double.

by LSJ on May 20, 2010 12:27 AM CDT up reply actions

Here's the thing...
“I just looked at the replay and saw that the ball hit the back part of the wall,” umpiring crew chief Dana DeMuth said. “The deal with the replay, which is a great tool that Major League Baseball has put onto us, is a tool that I probably should have used and I did not. Just like a team’s manager has a trust in their team, I have a trust in my umpire and my umpire that was out on that call [Doug Eddings] didn’t feel there was any question in his mind. He felt 100 percent sure on it. He didn’t come to me.”

So an ump has to go to the crew chief and ask him for a review to be called if they are uncertain? What the hell is that? Of course Eddings was going to make a call and then not mosey over to DeMuth and say, “Well, maybe you should look at that.” That’s not what umpires do. They make a call, stand by it with smugly, and then get really, really fat.

MLB needs to implement a way to allow a team to make the umpires review a contested home run or else allowing reviews is pointless.

This is what really bothers me...
Why didn’t Washington play the game under protest?

Washington said the only way he could have played the game under protest was to tell Eddings and or DeMuth in the fourth inning as he was arguing the call. Washington said he didn’t know if the ball was a home run until after the inning, when several players saw a replay in the dugout. At that time, it was too late to play the game under protest.

What. the. fuck. We got some dumb fucks in the dugout.

We’re all still trying to figure out exactly what this major league baseball review actually is. If it is all at the discretion of the umps, and the umps take the attitude of “this isn’t even up for discussion,” then I can’t get really annyoed at Wash for not complaining more.

On the other hand, the “forget to warm up Feliz” debacle is among the worst blunders I’ve ever heard of a manager committing. You simply don’t “forget” to warm up a pitcher. Wash is getting paid a ton of money not to make those types of mistakes.

Vlad meant a lot to the Angels Franchise….he deserved the benefit of the doubt over Matsui. This whole "he’s playing in Arlington" nonsense is BS…pitchers are the same no matter where you go. There are bandboxes everywhere, Yankees stadium for one…and it’s not out of the ordinary to hit better at home. Let’s diminish Yankee Greats while we’re at it.

Over the past few yrs, KRod, GA, Lackey, Figgins, and Vlad have all left. I remember KRod leaving….many HH members defended it by "comparing stats" with Fuentes and stating the Front office was saving money to Re-sign Lackey. Well now the team is paying big money for two closers in Fuentes and FRod…and Lackey is in Boston.
The Front Office is trying to outsmart themselves. When there is a winning core, it’s probably a good idea to keep certain members around…..

I think the Angels are a classic case

of showing how luck can exist at the highest scales of the organization. Their front office has been horrible in recent years. Bill Stoneman forgot to offer a contract to Warner Madrigal. They continually failed to trade prospects like McPhearson, Wood, and Kotchman when they had value and needed a key piece down the stretch yet they also failed to give them serious opportunities to win places on the club. Look at their drafts from the last few years since they took Weaver in the first round.

All the signings of trash players and letting other players walk that you talk about goes along with that.

I really have no idea how this club dominated the first decade of the 2000s. It is a testament to how epically disastrous the A’s, M’s, and Rangers have been the last decade.

JoePos reviews a Strasburg performance and gives a shout-out to Feliz in the process

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/writers/joe_posnanski/05/20/stephen.strasburg/index.html

In the context of discussing Strasburg’s combo of command, 100 mph heat, and plus secondary pitches, JoePos talks about how even great pitchers get scored on in the big leagues. Nice to see Feliz as a “go-to” guy when talking about great stuff in the bigs:

But I wonder if there has ever been pitcher who had all three at such a young age. The thing about big league hitters is that they are ridiculously good. They find ways to score runs on even the greatest pitchers. Not a lot of runs, perhaps. But no pitcher goes through life with an 0.00 ERA. Neftali Feliz throws 101 mph, but they score runs off him. Roy Halladay has a fastball, a cutter, a curveball and a change — all great pitches — but they score runs off him. Tim Lincecum throws a 98-mph fastball and what hitters unhappily call the Bugs Bunny change-up — and they score runs off him too. They scored off Walter Johnson, Sandy Koufax, Bob Feller and Tom Seaver. They scored off of Pedro Martinez and Greg Maddux. They scored runs off of Nolan Ryan who had the nastiest stuff of all.n

You don’t need a best fit line to see the trend in that image. His velocity has been steadily falling since he arrived in the big leagues, and through his first three starts this year, his fastball is averaging just 91.7 MPH. He has thrown 312 pitches this year, and only three of them have topped 95. He now throws about as hard as Matt Harrison and Clayton Richard. But, this is the crazy thing – it hasn’t mattered at all.

While Lincecum’s lost his top end fastball, he’s shown zero effects from it…Lincecum has gone from a flame throwing ace to a junkballer whose best asset his the command of his secondary stuff.

In the past he would dial the 2-seam up to 93-94, though.

That was DAMN impressive.

Now he’s content to just take a little off of it and control it better and get a little more movement on it.

It’s obviously working.

But occasionally you’ll be watching and he’ll hit something that seems to be an aberration on the gun, and that’s his 4-seam, I believe.

Could be wrong about that, but I know I’ve read he’s always pretty much used his 2-seam as his primary fastball and only occasionally mixed in the 4-seam cause he thinks the movement on his 2 makes up for the decrease in velocity, so my eye witness inferences would track with that.

I don't think it's that he chooses not to use it.

I think he rarely has even mid-90’s stuff anymore. It’s more than just pitch selection… the velocity on a given pitch is definitely down.

A lot of this has been documented, with quotes by him. He just flat doesn’t have 100mph, and rarely has even mid-90’s anymore. He seems to chalk it up to the grind and his high workload. One of his quotes was something like “I don’t know where it [the velo]went”.

But anyway, I agree completely: It’s a testament to what an un-fucking-believably good pitcher he is. I mean, I don’t think he’s Greg Maddux reincarnate yet, but he’s a lot closer to Maddux than a high velo guy now, and the transition has gone largely unnoticed.

Unnoticed

Plenty of people have commented on Lincecum’s changing repertoire and velo over the last several months.

Well yeah...

But that’s fairly recent, the point was most of the time it the velo decline was happening, people didn’t really realize it. Now that he’s bottomed out and still won a second CY, people are like “Hey, look at this…”

I'm betting that's what's taking so long

Check out his twits from last night

There is anti-Wash rage in this one. Even a little JD hate came flowing out at one point.

The Marriagesmasher was a little tipsy last night.
