M's cut ties with Eric Byrnes

Yesterday, Seattle Mariners manager Don Wakamatsu called Eric Byrnes "the Ultimate Competitor."

Tonight, we learn that the ultimate competitor is gone, apparently being released by the M's, and Ryan Langerhans is coming up to take his place.

Maybe Byrnes can join WWE and wrestle under the name "The Ultimate Competitor."

I'm also disappointed that Byrnes won't return as an M to Texas, because I was hoping that, when he came to the plate for his first at bat, Chuck Morgan would play Queen's "Bicycle Race" ("I want to ride my bicycle...I want to ride my bike...)...

That is a somewhat poorly constructed team

They have at least 2 DH’s. Seem to be lacking a LF. Lopez is someone who should never be batting near the heart of the order, more HR then walks should never happen.

I just don’t see how that team is going to score enough runs to stay in contention all year. We won’t have a great pitching staff by the end of the year, but we just gave up 4 runs in the course of 31 innings to them. That’s pathetic.

What do voluntary mean?

The dude abides.....

by JKolar on May 2, 2010 11:48 PM CDT up reply actions

It is true that they are built around pitching and defense,

But you need to score at least one run to win a ballgame (more like a few here and there). Their offseason was (and still could very well turn out to be) brilliant on paper. They took a chance on Bradley and that hasn’t worked yet. They traded the power of Beltre and Branyan for Chone Figgins’ speed and Mike Sweeney’s… leadership? Jose Lopez is what he is, at this point, and doesn’t look to get any better. Kinda like how Blalock’s career went down.
They made our good starting pitchers look as great as we made Doug Fister look today. Honestly, I wish Colby Lewis the best, but we know he isn’t that good. They made Colby and CJ look like Roy Halladay and [the good] Johan Santana this weekend.
Bottomline is that they are going to have to make some fairly big changes to their offense in order to compete. They still have a few prospects and the re$ources to get themselves a decent catcher and a power hitting LFer.

No, it's worse.

Sammy Sosa wasn’t used correctly; he had solid value in the right situation. I cringe when I see Griffey getting destroyed by RH pitching. He has no role. When he’s in the lineup, he’s hurting his team.

Yeah, that's what is so bothersome to me

He’s made some really good moves. He’s said some smart, out-of-the-box things. He hired Tom Tango. But he’s done some bad things. Yet, the bad has been swept under the rug by his fanboys and he’s been pimped as the next Branch Rickey.

IMO, Jack Z may become a very capable GM or may turn out to be a bust. But either way, the scorecard is far too incomplete to tell.

If you wanted to watch a highlight reel of glorious homers and epic fielding plays from the 1990s, Griffey could still bring the goods.

I hate watching all-time greats limp around in a state of disrepair. It makes me sad to see a washed-up, shell of the former great Griffey.

Of course, I don’t want them losing 100, else they may get Anthony Rendon or some other player who’s actually good in their system, which may make them actually deserve a ranking in the top half of the league.

I'm amused that this year's two sexy "pitching-and-defense" teams both look be mediocre at best

It’s hard to succeed with run prevention, though, when your prevention has some extremely glaring holes. Seattle can’t prevent runs when they’ve got Milton, Sweeney, AND Griffey all on the roster. Boston can’t prevent runs when their catchers are terrible defensively and literally incapable of stopping teams from running at will.

BOS and SEA have problems.

Seattle's record in 1 run games last year

should have been an indicator they weren’t that good of a club. Take that and subtract the offense Branyan gave you and it didn’t seem they had really improved…

I know Byrnes rides bikes and all, but he strikes me as the ultimate Jeep Brah

Waggoner would have gotten that bunt down.

Anyone who can concentrate on singing while standing next to Dolly Parton is not going to flinch at a squeeze bunt.

Comparing Porter Waggoner to Eric Byrnes is just appalling

I love me some Porter Waggoner.

Byrnes couldn’t pull off the Nudie suit if he wanted to, but Waggoner was born to wear Nudies.

Eric Byrnes will make like $11M this year.

That is a crime.

The best part....

Arizona is the one picking up that entire tab, minus the league minimum.

You do remember the money flying out HSG for Arod, Cat,& Padzilla

The dbacks do not have a monopoly on paying other teams players. Just sayin.

These guys could actually play well.

Cat is probably the closest comp, but it’s not quite 11mil this year like Byrnes.

Byrnes has been a bad player

Lookout Landing has several gifs of him missing catches. The other night he messed up on a squeeze play that would have won the game for the M’s. Ichiro was on third base and headed home when Byrnes squared up to bunt, but then Byrnes pulled the bat back. Treanor dropped the ball but recovered in time to get Ichiro out at home. Washington came out to argue that Byrnes had tried to bunt the ball and so couldn’t believe he pulled back on it that he got ejected for the first time since 2008. Then, after the game, Byrnes sped out of the clubhouse on an eight-speed bike past reporters and the team’s GM.
