Summer Music Festivals

I can't read many more articles about this whole creditor imbroglio. I am appreciative of the updates that Maury and others provide and that AJM diligently links, but come on. The Rangers play baseball, a game that has always been my purest form of escapism. When I'm stressed or bored, in moments when others might feel compelled to smoke a cigarette or close the books on their Lost fan site, I come read LSB and sink into Rangers baseball news and opinions. Reading about battles between an ousted ownership group and creditors spewing rhetoric like "This is now war" is a horrible, ugly distraction from the game itself, and while it gives me some degree of tired head, it gives me all the degrees of sad head.

This topic may have been touched upon in last night’s epic off-day thread, but I didn’t see it, so I’ll drop it here. Is anyone going to a music festival in the coming months? I’ve got two on my slate, Sasquatch up in Washington coming up this weekend, and Houston’s quaint little Free Press Summer Fest the next weekend (now with 100% more Wayne Coyne).

I know there are some music heads among us, so if you feel like taking a look at the Sasquatch lineup and opining on who I should see, I would certainly be obliged.

http://www.sasquatchfestival.com/#/lineup

Did anyone go to Coachella? Is anyone going to Bonnaroo or Lolla?

ACL Fest

I’m going to miss it this year because I’m going to a wedding, but I thought the lineup was pretty good, in spite of not really digging on the big three acts (Muse, the Eagles, and Phish). The second tier is very strong (Sonic Youth, MIA, the Strokes) and there are lots of other good smaller acts as well. Sad I’m going to miss it.

Not mediocre. Right about average

I don't dig the headliners at all

but as you said, there is enough talent there to make it a fun experience. I will have moved to Nashville by this time, but if I was still in TX, I’d be satisfied with a single day ticket this year.

Come on

Eagles, Phish, Muse… Thats pretty solid, right up there with Coldplay, Oasis, Black Crowes from 2005… This will go down as a big year at ACL, guaranteed

The Strokes, Gaslight Anthem, Gogol Bordello

Last year at ACL… AWESOME! Top 3 show… Girl Talk, Flogging Molly, Gogol…

Meh, I really only know them for the Start Wearing Purple song.

God I love that song.

I have a few others I’ve downloaded of the old iTunes, but none of them set my penis on fire like Purple.

I'm not as into the jam bands as some people around here

so Phish doesn’t hold quite the cache. Although it would be cool to say I’ve seen them. The Eagles are sort of in the same boat, not dying to see them but not going to leave early to avoid them. I have no interest in seeing Muse.

I can imagine their sound being really good live. I'd def go see 'em if I had the chance (and tickets weren't ridiculous... Dirkatron isn't made out of cashmere and puppies, afterall, and they're apparently quite popular).

It’s dick rock.

Dick rock is a genre of music that exists pretty much only to be good live.

I got one of their albums off the advice of a friend and found it to be… okay.

The 3 or 4 big songs (the ones I assume were singles) we pretty good listens, especially if you wanted to get pumped up, but it certainly wasn’t great. It’s like jock jams, but with more guitars, basically.

And dear god the lyrics were pretty cringe inducing in parts.

Don’t try to make overt political statements in dick rock, man.

All Who Yonder Are Not Lost

Our paths are going to cross at a couple of places…haven’t been to ACL since 2005 because they mainstreamed the headliners from 06-09. Will definitely be going back for Phish this year. Also hitting the Yonder show at Red Rocks…very stoked about that! Saw the Allman Brothers and Mule there last year and loved it.

Am still trying to talk my friend into High Sierra, but I don’t know if that’s going to take shape or not.

Summer festivals all come down to what kind of music you like. Festivals that I like (Wakarusa, 10,000 Lakes, String Summit, High Sierra) are more on the jam and roots rock and bluegrass end of things. Bonnaroo and ACL used to be in that category, too. Stuff like ACL, Bonnaroo, Coachella has more diverse lineups that are mainstream-heavy. Just depends on what you like.

Actually a pretty good guy, just WOW with the ICP shit.

He’d come in all angry sometimes for no reason and be like, “I’m gonna listen to some fuckin’ ICP now” and I’d know that it was time to fuckin’ clear out cause he’d mother fucking BLAST that shit and thrash around the room for a while till he got it out of his system.

Sometimes he’d do it the mornings after I’d been out getting my inebriation on, and I’d have to go sleep in the pillow room in the library.

He used to bring chicks back to the room and tell them about how hard his life was when he lived in NY. He even claimed he got shot 3x to this fat chick to make sure he’d close the deal.

Glancing over the Sasquatch lineup again, a few thoughts on who I've seen:

-The National live is a thing of beauty. They are so killer live.
-As are Broken Social Scene and The Hold Steady.
-Have heard nothing but excellent things about The Middle East live.
-I just gave LCD Soundsystem a great album review on my site; I’m seeing him in June. Very pumped.
-Dirty Projectors are pretty solid live.
-Love, love, love the XX, but I seriously doubt how their sound will translate to the festival circuit.
-I bet Yacht is cool live.
-MGMT is greatness live.
-So are the New Pornographers.
-Camera Obscura puts on a pretty good show.
-Seen Dr. Dog a couple of times live, their show does not really comport with the sound on their albums. It’s very bizarre how it’s almost like two different bands.
-Go to No Age for some sweet guitar noise rock.
-Neon Indian is (partly) from Dallas and is hit or miss live.
-Bobcat Golthwait? WTF?

She's still on tour on her own, no?

I could be wrong. Ah well, it’s like for me seeing Broken Social Scene multiple times, almost never without Feist or the Metric chick (can’t think of her name at the moment). Still good stuff.

New Pornos have never disappointed me live.

Never seen 'em live, but LOVE them so damn much.

Stacked Crooked is one my favorite songs of all time, by far.

It’s the leader on my all-time iTunes play count list, I’m pretty sure.

My sis got me the tix for my bday and she said she checked and saw that Neko had no tour dates listed at the time of that show, but as to whether she’ll be touring with ’em or not (I assume if her tour is still going on that she might need a break or something), idk.

Have you listened to their last album?

I keep meaning to buy the damn thing, but haven’t gotten around to it.

I’m sure I’ll love it, but I’ve got so many damn albums in my “need to buy” queue I just haven’t pulled the trigger.

Nah, that and the Gogol album are sitting on my desk….haven’t even thrown them onto the computer yet, to be honest. I’ll listen to the new album once their show gets closer (July).

Right now I am obsessed with new Wolf Parade. Holy shit I’m loving that one. Comes out in about a month, and it’s like denser, less whimsical Wolf Parade. Greatness.

Dr. Dog was great when I saw them last year.

Neon Indian was solid at SXSW. Their female keyboardist’s stage presence made her 500X cuter.

I saw this movie about a bus that had to SPEED around a city, keeping its SPEED over fifty, and if its SPEED dropped, it would explode! I think it was called, The Bus That couldn't Slow Down.

Other girls who are cuter from playing an instrument (but who aren't really all that cute):

Bassist from Stellastarr*
Chairlift Chick
Cat Power (she may be kind of hot)
Feist
Lykki Li (she may be actually hot, can’t decide)

Also, not saying Dr. Dog is bad live, they’re pretty sweet live….they just sound SO different than their studio work to me.

Oh

You know who’s hot? The Cello player from Ra Ra Riot. She’s legit hot. Dresses kind of strangely, but who’s counting?

they'll be at the Free Press Summer Fest

that was a pleasant surprise.

What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.

The brunette cello player, not the blonde violin player. You may think the blonde is cute, but she’s not really my cup of tea, shall we say.

Régine Chassagne

I know no one will agree but I’ve always dug her from Arcade Fire.

Serenity now, insanity later.

Oh man

Super talented, awesome band, but boy…………….she is not good looking. Not even a little.

She...

…bothers me.

If Brad Pitt is playing Beane who do you want playing you?

Just heard some Dr Dog recently and

I think I really liked it. The name throws me off, but I need to look into a little more when I get a chance.

Which album?

I think their best is Fate. New one is kind of all over the place.

by FuturePants on May 27, 2010 9:10 AM CDT up reply actions

I love the all their work.

Fate is the best album from beginning to end, but We All Belong is great too, if not a bit too much Beatles/Beach Boys worship.

Shame, Shame is good too, though I still need to give it a few more spins.

You know I'm not sure.

I was walking through Good Records in Dallas a few weeks ago and they were playing a song called “Shadow People”. I liked it a lot, but will indeed check out the Fate album as well.

Eh, it happens at lots of shows.

I just make it a point to not let people get in front of me if I’ve staked my claim at a show.

You wanna be at the front? Get to the show early and watch the openers. No one cares if so and so is your favorite band and you’ve never been up front to see them.
