LSB Education survey
This stems from the a question brought up in one of the bankruptcy threads about how many lawyers we have on here. I think the LSB community has a broad base of various levels of education and specializations. Answer truthfully and if you are still working towards a degree feel free to mention it in the comments...
I would expect that there will probably be a much higher average education level on LSB than you will find the overall state and country breakdowns.

Yeah
I’m sorta waiting to hear for some college coaches about tennis scholarships but if not I’ll be ok. My grades are good and stuff. I’m looking at TCU, Wofford, Wake Forest, and Davidson if tennis falls through.
"Failure is the condiment that gives success its flavor."-Capote
TCU
…used to have a good team. Long ago I had a USTA rank of like 400 and something and a friend of mine was playing for the TCU team. I could only get points off serves…if he managed to return I was dead in the water, haha. And he admitted that he wasn’t even one of their better players. That was a long time ago, though.
I think UT has a good tennis outfit, too.

Depends on what you want to do major wise
I played lacrosse in college the first time through, so I might be biased about the some of the reasoning behind playing sports in college. I will tell you this though, if you truly love tennis, look and see if any of the schools you mentioned accept walk ons or have a tennis club team.
As far as the schools you have down, I would tell you to do your diligence in the overall quality of education you want and how valuable th degree is after you come out.

I like the fluid gameplay of Lacross
It really flows
I still remember being shocked when I got shipped off to boarding school up North and found out they actually had a fucking Lacross team.
Someone explained the game to me and I laughed.
Actually seemed kind of okay once you get to watching it, cause of all the violence, but the idea of the little net-stick thing and running around tossing it to eachother still makes me giggle.
If I’d grown up in an area where it was big I bet I’d’ve played it, though.
Assuming it didn’t conflict with baseball and football and basketball.

Don and I were in the same section 1L year and hung out a fair amount. Good dude.
I played on a city league softball team he organized spring of our 1L year. He was a good ballplayer and apparently overestimated the talents of the rest of our team and put us in a city league that had teams that brought their own uniforms and everything. We got smoked so badly.

Funny story about his nickname
To start with, we all knew him as “Don,” then he told us that his friends all called him “DR” before. I think he wanted us to start calling him DR. Naturally, a couple of us asked what “DR” stood for and he said “Donald Ray.”
So rather than call him DR we just started calling him Donny Ray to aggravate him and never quit.
Tell him James Decker says what’s up.

Who was the dude that years ago would do these quasi-doctor writeups about injuries and what they were? He was in med school IIRC…
I did a couple
But I am certainly not in med school… Grew up with two medical parents, and just a general interest in sports medicine and baseball injuries lead me to my knowledge (gained via reading tons of journal articles)
My mom used to make me read n.e. journal of medicine articles to bolster my reading abilities, were talking like 8th grade here… Now I do a lot of psych research (one of my degrees) so I check in on medical stuff as it comes out also….
But no, no med school for me… yet

Yeah, the professor that was my primary advisor throughout grad school pretty much told me the same thing about going on for a Ph.D.
I have thought about going back, but it’s been 15 years since I got my MA, and there’s really only 4 good Ph.D. schools for Eastern European history outside of the Ivy League- UC Berkeley, Indiana, Boston College, and UT-Austin. Or at least that was the case when I was looking into them back in the mid-90s.

Israel/Palestine, Algeria/France etc.
I’m think I’m going to try to go to grad school and research baseball history, but tie it in with local or Texas history to make it doable.

Good luck with grad school. That area seems like it would be kinda tough to pull off.

Algeria is fascinating.
The rest is annoying. Blowhards get tiring.
Baseball is doable. I had one guy willing to be on my thesis committee. It’s all about how you present it from what I can tell. Probably won’t happen though. I’ll end up being a burnout with a MA or Ph.D in some useless area which won’t help me in the least.
Very true
UTA had two options for the history MA: take 30 course hours and write a thesis, or take 36 hours, and then do a day-long final exam which consisted of 3 essay questions and a 2-hour oral exam.
If you did the non-thesis option, you chose a “graduate committee” of 3 professors, each of whom assigned you one of the essay questions and reading material to prepare for both the written and oral exams. The best part of this was that not only did the professors allow you to help design your own questions, but the exam prep counted for the additional 6 credit hours required for the non-thesis option.
I think you can figure out which route I chose.
Incidentally, my 3 essay questions:
1. Write a detailed analysis on the criticisms of communism presented in the writings of Yugoslav dissident Milovan Djilas;
2. Write a detailed analysis on how modern Irish politics has been influenced by attempts to preserve the Gaelic language;
3. Write a detailed analysis on the sexual politics of the French Revolution as described in the works of the Marquis de Sade.

Good lord.
That sounds exhausting. I’m sure it helps that the profs allow your input though. I’d heard that for UNT you have a full oral exam even if you take the thesis. No essays though.
Yeah
That exam was brutal- 4 hours for the written, 2 for the oral, with a 2-hour break in between. I took the prep course over the summer, so I had to cram everything into 9 weeks instead of the usual 12-13.
Having input into the questions definitely helped, especially since I’d written and presented a paper a few months prior on question #2. The research on the Marquis de Sade question was very interesting, to say the least.

I can imagine.
Sexual politics in the French Revolution seems like it would be a fascinating topic considering how large of a role women played in it at various points.

I've 'done' it once...
There’s a technician who actually does the experiments. Gold plates and expensive lasers and all…
So far I’ve done a smattering of things in the molecular biology and microbiology realm, but I’ve been moving more into biochemical techniques this semester (thank goodness!). We just got a crystal of a protein of interest this past week, so that should be fun.
The other thing I’m working on is not going so well right now. Going to have to try a different approach, I’m just not sure what that is yet. I am sure that it’s going to have to wait until after a vacation, though. =)

Yeah, it's hard because..
…I’m under a bit of a time crunch. Knowing that you have 2 years of clinic time left after you finish your PhD makes school seem that much longer. It’s frustrating because there’s tons of opportunities to present data; I have the option for presenting at medical student events and graduate student events. So far I’ve just been cycling through small starter projects without any really sticking. I’ve learned a lot of techniques in the lab…but I’m ready to get data. Hopefully the crystal structure will lead to some stuff…

Good old mud-puds
gonna get paid more than everyone. Of course you’re in grad school for 10 years.
Go Rice Owls!
Not really...
…best way to make money in medicine is categorical surgical training-ortho, plastics or neuro.
Academic clinicians get paid based on their ratio of clinic to research time, the more clinic the better. I’m not sure about the breakdown I’ll want yet.
I’ve thought about pursuing sports medicine just because it’s something that could lend itself to research and an excuse to follow sports as much as I already do. But I’m not sure I want to know that much about my favorite players. Probably end up pursuing endocrinology or something of that ilk.
Now if hear about me signing on to work for a Wall St/Investment firm to analyze biotech firms, you’ll know I’ve sold out for the money. =) Apparently, it’s how an MD/PhD can make mucho dinero.

well, also if you want to do research
an MD/PhD concentrating entirely on academic research makes significantly more than a comparable PhD, even if they aren’t using the MD at all.
As always, I guess, there are more profitable career paths than doing academic research.

Heh.
Yup. Although I’m hearing that they get better professor startup packages and salaries compared to the standard PhD-PostDoc route. I’m not sure if this is just at medical schools where they are better suited to lecture or if it’s just a competition thing. Still, I’m not really interested in having 0 clinic time.

It’s a real fucked up situation and they leverage that as best they can. They enough artillery trained on Seoul to kill millions of people in a few hours…just can’t fuck with them for that reason. Now they have a low yield atomic device, too, although some doubt that.

This reminds me of a story about the German military prior to WWI. They approached Austria to do some “joint training exercises” or some such shit with their military. The two armies show up and the Germans were so far superior in stature, training, ability, discipline, etc. that not too long after, when Germany approached Austria about invading, Austria was just like, “If we fight, we know we’re fucked, so you can just come on in.”
Hah, I'd never heard that.
That story reminds me of the story of when Dirk Nowitzki had to do his mandatory German army training and was too tall for any of the uniforms, so while every other single cadet on base was in uniform, he had to rock a pair of sweats… and also since he was so tall the drill sergeants would try to get in his face and yell it was all he could do not to bust out laughing cause you get in trouble if you don’t look straight ahead and they’d be yelling at his chest so of course he couldn’t see them
I got this second hand, btw. So it may be exagerated and/or completely false… I just found the image of super-dorky 18 year old Dirk running around a German military training base in sweats trying not to laugh as German drill sergeants yell at his chest.
The butt cut is just a terrible look…

My brother got the same degree from the same place.
He sells cars now.
Where do most get employed with this degree? I have projects that would be helpful to have someone on board with this type of background.
Employment varies
It is a very social degree and you have to network to really be successful.
There are huge number of paths one can take with the degree. Business continuity, public health, emergency management in hospitals, safety and emergency management for organizations, disaster response and cleanup, and then the mainstream paths of government (local, state, federal) .
As for me, I oversee an emergency operations center, coordinate all emergency communications mediums and administrate our critical information systems. One of my biggest duties is as the administrator and developer of a web-based, real-time emergency management software application.

Thanks, it's pretty interesting.
On the whole, I found my graduate courses covered much more of the interesting stuff than my undergrad ones (on both on the theory and software engineering sides of things). I really enjoyed writing the code for the project I wrote my thesis about, too.
I started on my master’s right after getting my bachelors, and looking back I’ve got mixed feelings about that. I learned a lot of cool stuff, and I wouldn’t like to give that up, but it wasn’t the best move financially and after having the bachelor’s in hand I started to realize just how long I had been in school and got kinda stir crazy (I changed majors a couple of times before settling on CS as an undergrad, too). So when I found a company that would hire me with the bachelor’s and pay for me to complete the master’s as a distance student, I jumped at it.

Mine is considered cheap. I had to look for a while before finding it… I think one of the knocks against it is the proximity to a cemetery, as well as the fact that the pool’s not very large lavish.

1822 W. Oak? They were trying to get a zoning change for years to build apartments there, but the uppity neighbors would rather look at that piece of shit house than live near apartments and always beat it.
Piece of shit or not, that house should be a historical landmark. It was the oldest house on the street, and actually used to be a farm house. Plus it was my house.
You sure you’re not thinking of the place next door? It burned down while I was still there but it stood for a long, long time for some reason. Can’t miss the Leaning House…white, two stories, literally leaning over toward the right. Has a staircase on the side for the 2nd floor apartment.

Class
We had plenty, as you can tell not only by the Weinermobile but by the presence of the beat up recliner on the porch.
The house was fucked up real bad. There was the lean, which caused the windows to be immobilized. That was bad because there was only one window unit for the whole bottom part of the house (four bedrooms). And there was a hole behind the water heater that rats used to get in. We tried plugging it up with skateboard decks but the sons of bitches were strong enough to push them out of the way.
It was a great place. Some old ladies in a Buick Park Avenue stopped by one afternoon saying that they used to live there when they were kids. That’s how we came to find out it was the oldest house around there and that there was a farm.

I don't know who the second one was
First it was a lady, and she wasn’t very nice but pretty much left us alone. Then a couple months before we moved out she sold the place. The new owner tried to charge us a bunch of money on move-out but we took care of that. For all I know that was his name…really don’t remember. The charges were for really stupid shit like letting the grass die, when there wasn’t even a faucet outside to water it even if we wanted to. Also for fleas, but there were no fleas in there. We did have a dog but we took care of him. I wouldn’t have tolerated living with fucking fleas and no dog of mine is going to have fleas for very long either. We didn’t really take care of the house, but it was all fucked up to begin with and we left it in is good as shape as it was when we moved in.

The photo above doesn’t really show it that well but the lean was pronounced back in ancient times when I was in college. It must be a sound structure or we would have made it fall apart, believe me.

Not sure if it was posted above
but here is the first LSB Education Survey, from 2007
The breakdown was as follows:
HS: 16%
Technical degree: 2%
Assoc. degree: 5%
Bach. degree: 49%
Master degree: 18%
Doctor degree: 8%
While it wasn’t broken down into types of doctorates, at it wasn’t clear where law degrees fit in, it looks like the distribution of degrees is statistically the same as we’ve seen today. Though with many fewer votes.
Go Rice Owls!
Here is the summary of that series of polls
Back then we probably had about 100 regular posters…
Surprise #1: That so many of you actually answered questions, made detailed comments and voted, thank you.
Surprise #2: That there were more lesbians than females.
Surprise #3: For the most part, our discussions of religion and politics were civil. There were more serious dust-ups over Loe vs. Wright, various fast food choices, and Walmart. Kudos all around.

Well, since a law degree is a doctorate, I’m sure any lawyers would have put themselves into the last category.
I'm about to get one
and I’m not sure I consider it the same, even though it technically is.
Something about writing no thesis
Speak for yourself.
I wrote a 50 page paper on the death penalty as it applies to punishing internationally born terrorists apprehended on US soil.
Not as intense as a dissertation, sure, but not real fun.
Sounds miserable
But I wrote a 35 page paper on created water in the Rio Grande Basin and another 35 pager on Texas law pertaining to surface use by mineral producers. And both thoroughly entertained me.

well then your "speak for yourself" comment doesn't really make sense
speaking for myself and everybody else that’s a JD, most of us didn’t have to write a dissertation hence I don’t consider it a real doctorate
That's why we don't refer to each other as "doctor" so and so, probably.
I don’t think any lawyers think our degree is in as high regard as an MD or PhD or something, but it is a doctorate, make no mistake.
As much as a PharmD for a pharmacist is a doctorate.

Do you get a PhD with a focus on an academic career or is there a call for PhD engineers in the private sector?
I’ve always wondered about that.
"I’m gonna go on record here and say a great many things excuse throwing a chair at someone." – D.A. Tron
I ran into a fair number of PhD engineers in management and high-up research positions at companies I was interviewing with.
More than I would’ve expected (especially the ones now in upper management).
That's essentially where I want to be
High-end research jobs love the PhDs, because they take it as an indication that you know how to design/run/follow up on your own projects.

PhD in science
is just like having a research job which presumably you really like, only you get paid half of what the technicians (who have BAs and Masters) get. But you do get paid while you’re getting your degree. I can’t imagine how non-science/engineering PhD’s get by actually having to shell out cash for school, insurance, housing, etc. for 6 or 7 years.
Go Rice Owls!
oh
and the whole “school” part – the classes and what not – are only about a year or two, and they aren’t like classes at any other point in your life. In my experience, they’re challenging, but they are relevant to your life, so you and everyone else works hard at them. No one fails classes in PhD programs.
The real work is afterward, but that isn’t “school,” it is research. And research is both pretty easy and really hard at the same time.
Go Rice Owls!
I've spent the past 4 years of my life trying to explain this to people.
The “Good Lord! You’ve been in school for how long?!” stuff gets kind of old.

Though now that I’m graduated and unemployed for 18 months since that glorious day I wish I had gone to the fucking University of Baghdad to get away from my family.
Ha
I hear you. My parents persuaded me to go to UNT because of the closeness… which made me reluctant to go there, but it was too good a fit as a fantastic RTVF/music school with cheap tuition and generous scholarships. I don’t regret my decision at all, though travelling to visit the family in Dallas every other week gets burdensome.

I did the same.
When I lived in the dorms I drove home every weekend to get away from my roommate. I didn’t really even have a true college experience.
Yeah
I spent my first two years in the dorms because it seemed like the cheapest option ( I went sans meal plan)… furing my first year, I hung on to aforementioned jobs in Dallas (supervised at a deli and catering company) and worked thursday, friday and sunday. It was miserable… I came to hate Dallas simply because of what I went through when within its confines.

Houston is a top notch Creative Writing school. One of the better ones.
Not sure why you’re trying to pick a fight. Who cares? You can’t get very far with a creative writing degree. If he did already then more power to him.

I'm not offended in the least.
Dartmouth might be a better school as a whole, but it isn’t a better school for creative writing so I’m not sure what your point is.
Each school has it’s own strengths and weaknesses. Being an Ivy League school doesn’t automatically make it #1 in everything.
In a general sense
But you’re not looking at the specific situation. The Lakers are a better team than the Suns, but their point guard play can’t come close to matching Phoenix’s.
http://oursaviorchuck.ytmnd.com/
I don't see the comparison.
People hire out of college based pretty much on resumes. I’m just willing to bet that no matter what the program, an Ivy League grad is a safer bet.

They admit the best and the brightest, and they may not teach very well, but you can’t make a sow’s ear out of a silk purse. If they come in the best and the brightest, they’re probably going to leave the best and the brightest, O.K.?

I guess it depends on the specialty.
If the person who’s interviewing you knows a lot about creative writing programs (or what have you), then they’ll make the more informed decision.
In general though, I think you’re right. The manager who hired me for my first job had no idea about highly-ranked computer science programs (he graduated in the 80s and still wrote ancient programs), and the manager who hired me for my current job…was never a programmer.
I think that's exactly right.
I just don’t think employers generally scour the various rankings every year for Program X. Obviously some will, and as you said, they’ll make a more informed decision.
But mainly they’re just looking at school name (and general prestige either nationally or locally), jobs/activities, and maybe references.
Of course, I should say that even knowing that Houston is ranked higher—and I should say I’d certainly want to know the methodology before I cared too much—I’d probably still give the presumptive nod to the Ivy Leaguer, for the same reasons that Scalia gave.

College prestige
I worked a bunch of odd jobs in mountain towns before I was forced to give up my wandering lifestyle due to a bad skiing accident.
When I did enter the white collar world, I’ll say that having Dartmouth on my resume (and little else, frankly) definitely gave me a leg up. Not saying that’s how it should be, but that’s how it is.
by VM on May 27, 2010 2:53 PM CDT up reply actions
You're preaching to the choir.
I’m pretty sure that that is how it should be. With very little information to go on, it gives a very impressive insight.
Now, I wouldn’t hire strictly off resume, but as I said it creates a presumption in my mind that the other candidates would have to overcome with a great interview, etc.
Of course, I should also say that I’ve never hired anybody, and it’s very possible that I would be horrible at it using my methods.
by brettgardner on May 27, 2010 2:58 PM CDT up reply actions
There's frankly a huge difference between undergraduate degrees and graduate degrees in this respect
A lot of times, having an Ivy-league or similar institution on your resume for your undergraduate degree is not a good measure for anything more than SAT aptitude (which, in turn, is a poor measure of intelligence because of wonderful companies like Princeton Review). Yes, many of the kids at prestigious undergrad institutions are very smart and capable; but they’re mostly just the beneficiaries of privileged upbringings.
Give me the UT/Harvard guy over the Harvard/UT guy any day of the week. (and, no, I didn’t go to either institution)
I agree with that.
Although generally speaking, the same sort of thing applies to graduates, it’s just that the process is slightly more difficult.
I mean, it was really pretty easy to breeze through undergrad, and there’s no shortage of companies looking to “help” with the LSAT, for instance.
Still, I agree that I’d take the UT/Harvard guy all things being equal.
by brettgardner on May 27, 2010 3:18 PM CDT up reply actions
Agreed
I’d guess that admission into elite graduate programs is a better indicator of someone’s work ethic and such (compared to elite undergrad).
But it’s also a bit like prospect analysis: of course the performance of an 18 year old requires more uncertain projection than that of the 22+ year old.
The number of students who truly impressed me at Dartmouth was fairly small, and I often wondered if that percentage would have been similar at a hundred other schools…
by VM on May 27, 2010 3:20 PM CDT up reply actions
And work ethic is key here...
I think you can learn a lot more about a candidate’s work ethic from looking at his/her resume than you can about a candidate’s general aptitude. This is important because work ethic ends up trumping aptitude in most cases. This is especially so in private law practice with generic big firm X.
And I should add..
I’ve never been in the position of making hiring decisions, though I have served on the recruiting committees for a couple of different large Dallas law firms. The two things I looked at most closely? Course selection and writing sample. Those two pieces tell you a lot about a candidate.
I'm curious about what you mean
Did you view the courses in the context of the position the applicant was applying for?
Obviously having too many “Law and ____”s is not the greatest credential-booster, but I’m just curious.
by brettgardner on May 27, 2010 3:33 PM CDT up reply actions
Well, I was in a litigation section, so yes
I wasn’t going to hold it against a candidate who had a lot of transaction-related courses on his/her resume, but we didn’t get those anyway.
Just by way of example:
Candidate A
Administrative Law – B
Federal Courts – B+
Constitutional (insert theory or subtopic) – B+
Antitrust – B
Jurisprudence – A-
Candidate B
Civil Litigation (Clinic) – A
Law and Society (or whatever) – A
Evidence – A-
International (anything) – B+
Health Law – A
I’m already leaning toward candidate A after an initial review of his/her resume. Assuming (and it’s likely given the two different paths they’ve taken) that candidate A is also the stronger writer, that’s the person to whom I would give the nod.
Mmm
Understandable.
That also makes me happy because A is almost exactly my schedule next fall.

SAT and community service type stuff in HS, in my experience.
All those idiot kids who did stuff like study for the SAT and didn’t do stuff like take it on 4 hours of sleep after checking out haunted houses all nights to push their scores up make it too competitive these days for good old slacker but naturally good at the SAT (yay knowing lots of obscure words!) kids to have a shot at an Ivy.
(I hope this comes off more funny than bitter, I was quite happy with not going to an Ivy. It’s not like they’re known for undergrad engineering programs anyway.)
I gotcha
I’ve always done exceptionally well on test too, for whatever reason. Maybe i have a bitchin’ subconscious…because I never studied much until I was taking those ridic MS and Cisco tests.
"I support you, Wash; I’ve always supported you," Young said
"Back on the scene, with a gangsta lean" RW
It's hard for me to say.
I think that Scalia’s reasoning comes from a very normalized and privileged perspective. I would imagine that kids whose families have greater access to wealth attend better public schools, and conversely are better prepared for the SATs (and their schools are more likely to place greater importance on these tests systemically). Consequently, they’re going to get admitted to better ranked schools.
That doesn’t make them stupid nor does it take away from their academic accomplishments, but (from my perspective) it doesn’t accurately measure their capacity to learn. For what it’s worth, I couldn’t give a shit about where you went to college or what degree you received. Your efforts (academic or otherwise) and your ability to explain those efforts are all I care about.
Yeah.
I’m sure it’s not a bad correlation, but if you followed it too closely, you would miss out on some great talent.
Anecdotally, it seems like MD/PhD programs in general pull from the highest level universities, but each usually has a few spots each year that come from much smaller schools. I’m sure part of it is that they have crazy scores; but another part of it has to be that the retention rate for MD/PhD students isn’t great, so if you can find a student who’s incredible driven and can succeed from a smaller school with fewer resources, you have to like their chances once they get more opportunities.
If Brad Pitt is playing Beane who do you want playing you?
JD: Eddie Guardado.
by GhettoBear04 on May 27, 2010 3:53 PM CDT up reply actions
I agree with the second part
But the problem is we’re talking about first jobs, where you can’t do much but go on the resume. I’m not sure what you mean by “explain those efforts.” Is that referring to an interview? If so, that can be even less illuminating than a school name on a piece of paper.
And I’m also not sure what you mean by “it doesn’t accurately measure their capacity to learn.”
Why doesn’t it? Even if they go to better schools with better preparation, they’ve already shown the ability to learn. I’m just not sure why a lucky draw in terms of parents should be a negative.
It seems like you’re assuming that if you put anyone in a privileged situation, they’d turn out with a super high GPA and stellar SAT, and I don’t think that’s true at all.
Also, for what it’s worth, Scalia was not especially a child of privilege himself. His dad was a professor, but if I remember correctly, he went to public schools.
by brettgardner on May 27, 2010 3:57 PM CDT up reply actions
You went the opposite way with my intent.
I’m not suggesting you penalize students who were lucky enough to be in privileged situations, just that in my experience, the lack of privilege (and the benefits of going to schools in high income areas) is treated harsher than is necessary.
I know that my high school treated SAT preparation with greater importance than other schools in the area. We also had many fewer distractions in our learning environment that kids in other schools did not, so we were able to spend a greater proportion of time studying. I’m furthermore suggesting that good schools hire better teachers (because of their capacity to pay more) and that this is overlooked a great deal of the time.
“Explain those efforts” was more in reference to general communication abilities than an interview specifically, but I do think those skills can shine through in interviews.
I guess I would agree with you
Except for a few things:
For one, elite schools do take underprivileged students all the time.
More importantly, it just seems to ask too much of an admissions committee to look at low GPA/SAT and then use some privilege calculus to show that, ah yes, in a better situation this person would have gotten X.
So if your actual point is that we should strive for overall improvement in schools, I absolutely agree. But looking beyond the numbers seems exceptionally difficult both for colleges and entry-level employers.
by brettgardner on May 27, 2010 4:10 PM CDT up reply actions
Yeah.
Affirmative Action does take care of some of this, although it’s an imperfect system in and of itself.
The tests themselves are also problematic in my opinion, as is how we weight performance as being based around these sorts of one-shot ordeals rather than a student’s entire body of work.
Well
One-shot ordeals have the advantage of being standardized, whereas the body can be all over the place.
by brettgardner on May 27, 2010 4:19 PM CDT up reply actions
That's true.
I guess you’d have to have some sort of national secondary-education and college-education rating agency to standardize academic records.
Yeah, Outliers talked about this a bit.

If the point is that you aren't doing something with your degree
then sure. If you’re attempting to work in creative writing it would be best to have as well respected of a program as possible. Obviously if you’re applying for a sales job an Ivy League diploma vs U of H is superior.
Yeah
I’m sure there are specialties where the quality of your program is scrutinized. With writing, it really doesn’t matter – who’s gonna hire you, and to do what?
As UNTJosh pointed out, the CW degree won’t get you anywhere. You have to get there with your writing (and some luck).
I mean, there just aren’t many creative writing “jobs” – with the exception of teaching writing. And you can’t even do that, generally, unless you’re a fairly successful writer.
I’ve taught writing via a small non-profit to some high school kids, but it’s unlikely that a college would hire me for a CW teaching gig unless I had some respected published works. So in that sense I’ll agree with Josh – it won’t get you anywhere.
But you can always write…
by VM on May 27, 2010 3:03 PM CDT up reply actions
Yeah, you can definitely always write.
Don’t need a Creative Writing degree to do so though. If yopu find one good luck, but I never expect to find anything with a history degree myself.
Creative writing programs
I’ve never even looked at a ranking of undergrad creative writing. I don’t know that I’d put that much stock in one, anyway. Teaching creative writing is a nebulous thing. In my mind, the two primary ingredients are the quality of the other writers in your workshops and the quality of the professor. I don’t know how well you could rank those two things, especially on the undergraduate level.
I think I’d put a bit more stock in rankings of Creative Writing MFA programs.
Anyway, every “successful” writer takes a different path. I know there are plenty that go the MFA route and it works out for ’em. A friend and former classmate of mine just sold his first novel for a pretty big sum after doing his MFA at Minnesota (his novel was his thesis).
But I lean more in the Cormac direction. He once said, “teaching writing is a hustle.”
That being said, I might consider going the MFA route someday if I think I’m stagnating or in need of high level feedback. But for now I make a good income when I choose to work and have plenty of time to write. The main obstacle is the discipline to actually do it, rather than wasting away my days online…

Teaching writing
is most definitely a hustle. No matter how talented you are as a writer, you cannot teach other’s to write in your exact style. The only real thing you can do to improve a person’s writing is to convince them to write in their own voice and their own style.

teaching writing
I’m working on a PhD in English Studies with a concentration in Creative Writing (poetry) at Illinois State University, which is essentially a teaching school (it’s in Normal, IL…normal school, eh?). So a decent chunk of my dissertation will be about pedagogy in my field.
In the teaching of creative writing, there seems to be more debates on assessment of the writing than what/how to teach. Because it’s such a subjective thing, people do it so many ways it would be ridiculous to argue about. What is important in teaching writing is to open students’ minds to new possibilities and to get them to recognize and then develop their own style. The teaching of craft goes on at the undergrad level in intro classes, typically, so in grad school it’s all about pushing students. It’s more feedback and workshopping than standard instruction.
It’s like being a track coach. Sure, you can run on your own and probably do just as well if you pushed yourself hard enough, but having a coach (or teacher) has its benefits, not least of which being opportunities. It’s hard to get into a college meet if you’re not part of the team, and it’s hard getting published without learning how to be part of the larger community in your genre of writing.
Having gotten my MFA, it definitely does not feel like a waste. It completely made me into the writer I am today, and it wasn’t through direct instruction. It was my own interaction with everything I was exposed to in the courses I took. Either way, MFA or not, the writer does all of the heavy lifting. But the teacher can be a useful guide.

no, I screwed around in college while playing ball the first go through (94-00, was on the TC plan back then for sure), had something like 180 hours and no degree. Finally went back to school to get my bachelors like 3 or 4 years ago, got it and then went straight to grad school.
Bonding is fun.

What did you think you could do
with it?
And why is it a BS instead of a BA? When did History get folded into Science instead of Arts? Did they finally figure out that most BA degrees aren’t that marketable?

Just finished getting my associates degree while playing baseball.
I really want to major in history and also maybe major in geology. Really random I know but, i would love to hear your guys suggestions on those two majors including getting a masters in history. I would love to be a college professor one day.

If you want to get a real job go with geology
if you want to teach, go with history, though even finding a teaching job there at the college level would be a long time coming.
Geology or geophysics
would seem to be a safer career move. Lots of 10 dollar an hour history majors who couldn’t get teaching jobs.
Each history prof has 20-30 history students, and only one of them is getting that profs job when he retires. Its just not a growth business.

I'll start...
0.
I worked my ass off, full-time, all through college. I couldn’t justify taking out student loans and paying for them 10 or 15 years down the road when I knew my little history degree wasn’t going to pay off when it came time to find a career.
Of course, I’ve only got one BA. I’m sure many here who have much more schooling than myself also have the debt that comes along with it, or at least did for some years.
"The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance."-Socrates
I just took out my first loan
Not a big one, $1,000. All subsidized.
I’m a senior now, and devoting time to internships is a lot more important than making $8 an hour at the library. I’ll probably take out a larger loan at the start of the next semester, and while the job market for media is absolute shit, I live frugally enough to where I can probably pay it back fairly quickly.

None
They didn’t have “student loans” back then. Scholarships were relatively more abundant, but for most it was work or bail out.

It was also
cheaper back then. UT and A&M were around 2500 a semester all inclusive (Tuition, Dorm, Board, Books, Sports pass etc.) back in the early 80s. You could make most of the money needed in the summer especially if you got an internship with a company.

Exactly
After transfer to ISU, I needed to pay $36 per credit hour per trimester, year round. Selling Fords part time in July-August produced money for tuition and fees. and some books could be rented. This was in the 50’s. One August I sold 8 new cars, 14 used cars, and a truck. That was two years’ woth of school expense.

Plenty.
I was a slacker in HS so didn’t get offered financial aid going in to college, and gambled on the engineering job market being good enough to justify taking out lots of loans instead of working during the school year. And it seems to be working, though of course now I wish I’d worked part-time instead of taking out some of the loans so I’d have smaller monthly payments. But I don’t know if I’d do it any differently money-wise if I was starting over (though I would have less debt just from graduating much more quickly due to not changing majors a couple of times).
I definitely think
Engineering degrees are in the column of generally paying for themselves.

My dad was a disabled vet
As I understand it, he was working below decks on a Coast Guard vessel and was injured (head trauma) due to something in the ship’s construction that didn’t meet regulations. The head injury gave him epilepsy — and this was in the late 60s or so, before seizure medication really did anything measurable. The epilepsy was so bad that he couldn’t hold down a full-time job for decades afterward because he couldn’t even get a driver’s license.
Anyway, this allowed me to get through college mostly because of the GI Bill. I almost made it through college with $0 of debt, but the government lost my FAFSA application going into my senior year of college. By the time they realized it was their mistake and told us to resubmit it (they wouldn’t let us submit it previously for some reason beyond my understanding), all the grant money was gone, and I was a full month into the semester, so there wasn’t a whole lot of recourse. I ended up just taking out a bunch of federal loans to get me through the last year of school, and graduated with about $9600 of debt.

MA English lit
just don’t ask me about fucking Proust.
oh, and
I was a CW major starting out but I found the people in the program(students and faculty) to be unbearable. English lit isn’t the most useful degree in the world for someone who doesn’t want to teach, but at least I didn’t have to take classes with the CW people. It was brutal.
