UEFA passes rules against financial doping

I’m curious to see how this plays out. You can’t have losses of more than $6 million over 3 years. Owners can’t cover more than $55 million in losses over the 3 years window. But you can invest in your stadium and player development as much as you wish.

If you're interested in a trip to S.A.

I heard there are still hundreds of thousands of tickets available. I don’t think hosting the World Cup in South Africa is going to work out that well, financially.

"What ... 92 miles per hour?" Feldman scoffed. "That's not gas. Feliz throws gas."

The problem isn't WC tickets

It’s the airline tickets. Normally, it’s around $1500 to fly there. I’ve been following it on Kayak and the cheapest flights have been around $2500 for most of the past 2-3 months; a lot of times, that included having to stay a night in Dubai, which sounds great except that it adds to the cost. The rates I have been seeing on AA through Europe are usually in the $3300-$3500 range.

Two tickets plus incredibly inflated rates for the hotels and transport to the other sites and…it just doesn’t make sense unless you have a good $10K to drop. From what I understand, that’s pretty ridiculous compared to normal travel to SA.

I’d love to see that guy in the Prem- he’s on my Lyon team in Football Manager, and he’s a beast.

He wouldn't, but he's out of a contract.

Real haven’t negotiated a new one yet and that’s generating some speculation about his future. Personally, I don’t think there’s any way he leaves Real, and certainly not for City, but more ridiculous things have happened I suppose.

Any thoughts on Bradley's roster choices?

I’m having a hard time figuring out how Beasley ever sees the field. I’m having a hard time figuring out why Torres is even in the mix given Bradley’s steadfast refusal to play anything other than a 4-4-2 counterattack. Will Dempsey play in a withdrawn role in a 4-4-1-1 with Holden on the right, or will Dempsey play on the right with Edson Buddle as our second striker?

We need to be playing a 4-5-1. Bradley’s slavish devotion to the 4-4-2 is infuriating.

by JDT217 on May 28, 2010 2:36 PM CDT reply actions

Eh.

I don’t mind it. I’m not sure any of the US players are so good that you have to build the system around them. Most are versatile, hard-working sorts as opposed to the other-worldly star talent that you have to build systems around.

Bradley has said that the team doesn’t play as well without the second forward and backed it up with taking a few young forwards. The only difference between the 4-4-2 or 4-5-1 with the personnel you’re talking about is how far forward Dempsey plays. As much as we debate this, there are bigger issues facing the team. Like Onyewu’s health, finding capable wing defenders and whether they are going to have any speed among their attackers.

I agree that it would be really nice to see Torres get a more prominent role and I’m happy to see him at least make the final 23. If they were going to change styles, I’d like to see him and Donovan playing off of each other in an advanced MF role with Bradley behind, Altidore up top and Dempsey and Holden on the wings in a 4-1-4-1.

That’s asking a hell of a lot from Bradley.

by LiamP on May 29, 2010 12:37 AM CDT up reply actions

The way I see it.

We need to be in a 4-2-3-1 with Clark and Bradley paired together in a defensive role, Donovan wide left, Dempsey wide right, and Torres at the CAM.

Pros: Central midfield is a our deepest position; Striker is not a deep position; Dempsey won’t have to defend all that well (with support from Spector (who becomes a real x-factor) at RB)

Cons: Great teams playing in this formation have good attacking fullbacks. Wingers have to cut in (1) to exploit the space left vacant by the absent forward who would have been there in a 4-4-2 and (2) because there aren’t enough bodies inside to cross to. Therefore the fullbacks must overlap to provide the necessary width to keep the back line honest. On the right, we’re ok with Spector. He puts in good crosses and is defensive enough to work out (especially since he’ll get so much defensive help from Clark/Bradley) On the left, it’s another matter entirely. Heath Pearce is excellent going forward. I believe he could challenge for a spot on any team’s roster, from an attacking standpoint. However, we’ve seen before (and saw again against the Czechs) how poor he is defensively. And thus he didn’t make the team. This means that we’re getting Bocanegra out there. Just get ready for it. The pundits can talk about the competition at that spot, but it’s a done deal. Boca and his slow self will be playing on the left all WC. In a 4-5-1, this means that Donovan is the only threat on that side. Now, 1v1 I like Donovan’s chances against just about anybody. However, if the opposition’s right-wing or right-back don’t have to worry about an overlapping fullback, then they can help each other on Donovan. That doesn’t work out as well.

I guess the real question is whether we have defensive midfielders who are good enough to play 1v1 against top-class wingers several times a game. Do you trust Ricardo Clark against Theo Walcott? And teams don’t even have to get on the counter to make it happen. They can position their wingers high up the field to begin with, which forces you to either leave your fullback back there to mark them or else take your own life in your hands whenever you go forward, knowing Walcott or Lennon or Cole or Gerrard 1v1 against a mid-fielder is just a long-ball away at any moment.

What’s the solution? That’s why Bob Bradley gets the big bucks. I don’t envy him.

I may change my mind about this tomorrow.

USA-Turkey

Looks like they are going with a 4-2-3-1 today.

Howard in goal; Bocanegra, DeMerit, Goodson, and Spector in the back; Clark and Bradley as the holding mids; Feihaber on the left, Donovan on the right, Dempsey playing behind Altidore.

Match is about to start on ESPN2.

Looks like Clark will lose his spot to Torres, and Dempsey will play out right.

Maybe Bradley knows what he’s doing. The 4-4-2 was clearly the superior formation for us today.

Was also encouraged by Gooch’s play.

Bornstein shouldn’t see 1 minute of play. We should have just taken Pearce.

I don't disagree with either of those things

but Pearce was pretty terrible in his recent chances, particularly against Czech.

Oh, he certainly was.

But at least he’s solid going forward. If Bornstein isn’t an upgrade defensively, may as well just take Pearce to spell Boca late in the game if we fall behind.

Well, to be fair, how much faster is Walcott than SWP?

I’d much rather have Adam Johnson than both, although Capello never gave him a chance. The continuous selection of Heskey is infuriating, as is the choice of Upson over Dawson (who had a really good year).

Looking at that squad, I struggle to see how they can truly be viewed as cup contenders. They’ll make it past the groups and lose in the quarters or something.

by LiamP on Jun 1, 2010 2:25 PM CDT up reply actions

Booooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo - no Adam Johnson

I listened to the Times’ WC preview podcast a few mins ago. A few things -

They all hated France – even if they overcome Mexico or Uruguay and emerge from group play, they predicted a 1st-round knock out to Argentina.

They were kinda hopeful for a Germany vs England 1st round match-up – but it would probably take Germany coming 2nd in their goup, which is only possible because of Germany’s injury woes. Speaking of German injury woes, they thought the Germany vs Ghana group match would be very interesting because KP Boateng plays for Ghana and he’s the one who put the hurt to Ballack. Sparks might fly there they thought.

They thought the USA vs England game will probably be a draw. Thought the US were slight favs over Slovenia to come 2nd in the group. England – they saw them only succeeding by winning like they did over Mexico the other day – very little possession but crash home some set pieces and counterattack bumrushes.

They thought Holland were weak at the back, at D-men and at goalie since Van der Saar didn’t go. Still, the Orange are decent dark horses due to all the talent up front. Van Persie is rested and on form – good timing they thought for him to carry them some. [Holland is probably my sentimental fav team]

They thought Italy might pull a “1982” and barely get out of their group, yet stage a get-r-done run thru the bracket and win the whole thing. [I’m predicting Italy wins the WC, btw]

They thought the Ivory Coast vs Portugal match right off the bat on June 15th would be HUGE considering the winner surely gets 2nd in the group behind Brazil. Then … if Portugal gets 2nd they would face Spain in 1st round – which would be another fun match-up.

They thought it was kind of a shame that no African teams really stood much of a chance even tho’ they’re on home soil. Essien’s injury was a big downer they thought. They thought South Africa sucked and would be 3-and-out after group play.

by shroomer on Jun 1, 2010 3:04 PM CDT up reply actions

forgot to add re: Germany vs Ghana

You might have brother vs brother, too – Jerome Boateng on Germany and KP Boateng on Ghana – further spice. [btw – Jerome Boateng’s the transfer target City supposedly has already unofficially locked up]

by shroomer on Jun 1, 2010 3:10 PM CDT up reply actions

France.

You know…I hesitate to say this, but Domenech’s been doing some stuff that makes sense. He’s put Henry on the bench and Anelka’s leading the line for them with Ribery/Gourcuff/Malouda behind. He’s also made Evra captain, which means a very small part of me will want to see France win it just to see King Pat lift the cup.

by LiamP on Jun 1, 2010 3:11 PM CDT up reply actions

also forgot to add re: USA's talent

They thought Landycakes could make England’s squad, but not start. They thought Howard would make England easily. And one guy was really sold on Bradley as a great midfielder. I’m surprised that Dempsey didn’t get mentioned – he seems better than several guys on England to me – Milner, Barry, Heskey, SWP for instance.

by shroomer on Jun 1, 2010 3:13 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree with that. Howard would start for England and Donovan would be in ahead of SWP.

You could only really compare Dempsey to SWP. He plays a different position to Barry, isn’t as malleable as Milner (Milner can slot into CM or LB in emergencies) and Heskey’s there just to be fat and hold up play as a target man.

by LiamP on Jun 1, 2010 3:17 PM CDT up reply actions

England

I was looking at the roster earlier today, and was amazed at how weak it seems outside of the big names.

You’d think England would sport an EPL All-Star team, given that the entire side plays in the Premiership, but that’s a fairly mediocre lot they’re taking to South Africa, particularly at striker and in goal. If there’s any key to the USA beating England in group, it’s our superiority in net.

Speaking of, has anyone ever come up with a theory on why the USA consistently produces good goalkeepers? I think there’s at least four, if not five or six, currently on an EPL roster, and most of them start.

Subotic

I have a lot less animosity towards him than I do Rossi. Subotic was born in Serbia, and was passed over for the USA at the U20 level, so I can understand why he chose to play for the Serbs.

Rossi, OTOH, was born in Jersey, and claims to identify more as an American than an Italian. I suppose it’s a bit of sour grapes on my part, but why not play for the USA, and help them possibly achieve something special, rather than join a national team that doesn’t need the help?

What a bunch of cunts

According to the Guardian it was 29mil.

by sprite on Jun 2, 2010 12:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Wonder what the strategy behind that bid is?

They know that Arsenal are just looking for an excuse to keep him, and Cesc knows he’s worth a good deal more than that. I can’t see what the rationale would be for really low-balling it, rather than just starting with, say, an 85% bid. Seems like a pretty ballsy, reckless approach.

by Brett Perryman on Jun 2, 2010 3:05 PM CDT up reply actions

It's possible they're just establishing "legitimacy" in their bid.

Like, “Hey, we tried!” They’ve already spent a lot on Villa and they’re supposedly in on Mata too…I’m really not sure they can afford Cesc this year. What this bid does do though, is further unsettle the player, which works in Barca’s favor.

by LiamP on Jun 2, 2010 3:18 PM CDT up reply actions

On the unsettling part

That seems like a jerk move just in terms of the Spanish national team, considering that they are a Spanish club and all. But I guess their concern is really the club, not stewardship of Spanish WC hopes.

Rafa

Well, I’m one, but I’m a definite minority in our local supporters’ group. The general consensus in our chapter is that he’s done a lot of good things for the club, but some new blood is needed.

There’s no official confirmation yet on Rafa leaving, but I’m not pleased to hear this, to say the least. If Hicks thought he had problems before, it’s nothing compared to the shit-storm that’s about to rain down on his head, especially if Torres and Gerrard follow Rafa out the door.

I’ll admit Rafa is far from a perfect manager, but I think it says a lot that he’s drawn substantial interest from clubs like Juventus and Inter. And honestly, I don’t see any way, given the current financial state of LFC, that the two fuckheads that are ruining my club can find a manager anywhere in Rafa’s class to replace him.

Haters gonna hate.

He’s strong like bull and gets beat up a fair bit by the central defenders he goes against. It only makes sense that he has to take some dives, but he’ll add some excessive theatrics every now and again. I don’t see how it’s much different from what most every forward does to varying degrees.

That he’s on the team that a lot of American soccer fans hate seems to engender a lot of hate for him personally as he’s their best attacking option.

Australia friendly

Findley’s pace is a weapon, but his finishing is crap, and his passing is crappier.

We need better marking on set pieces or England will destroy us.

Why is Ricardo Clark still playing?

Herculez Gomez might be the best name on the team.

Though Jozy Altidore is always a classic.

We need Joze to do some things, man.

Altidore

Well, as we know from 1950, the key to beating England is to have a Haitian-American striker on the team- Jozy fits the bill!

It's gonna be hard rooting against England that first match. I just can't help but root for Peter Crouch. He amuses me.

He’s gonna start at striker alongside the little no-neck dude, right?

Crouch

Not sure- either he or Emile Heskey if England goes 4-4-2. If they go 4-4-1-1, Rooney will be the lone striker with Gerrard playing in behind him.

And yeah, I like Crouch too. One of the coolest goals I’ve ever seen was the time he put one in on a near-bicycle kick when he played for Liverpool. He’s a gangly, awkward-looking motherfucker, but he does put the ball in the net.

He better start.

And yah the fact he’s so gangly and awkward looking is why I find unpossible to not root for him.

Everytime I’ve watched him play he’s scored… like 5 times now.

Makes me kinda nervous to watch the UK/USA game… I don’t want my Bambi on Ice magic to hurt team USA.

by thedirkatron on Jun 6, 2010 1:33 AM CDT up reply actions

Would he start?

I guess it would be Cole-RVP-Arshavin up front?

by LiamP on Jun 6, 2010 1:58 AM CDT up reply actions

Is he better than

Chamakh? I’m not sure that Wenger is willing to move either RVP or Chamakh to the left, but you also have Walcott, Rosicky, Nasri and maybe Vela/Bendtner in the mix for those three positions if they stay 4-3-3. I’m sure that the free transfer is attractive, but it seems like an odd place to add a salary, given their needs. I guess if Fabregas goes, they could change formations too, though.

by Brett Perryman on Jun 6, 2010 11:58 AM CDT up reply actions

I don't know how to compare him and Chamakh...two very different players.

Chamakh to the left would be really odd though. If you wanted to start Chamakh you would probably have to move RVP to the right, but I think Arsene likes him as the front man.

by LiamP on Jun 6, 2010 12:24 PM CDT up reply actions

Cole and Chamakh

are obviously completely different players, but if they run a 4-3-3 and everyone’s healthy, you have to choose between the two of them somehow. Maybe the design wasn’t necessarily to start a game with RVP and Chamakh on the field at the same time, though, I don’t know.

I guess Cole has only started more than half of Chelsea’s league matches twice since 2003 (and was in the 20s those two years), so it’s not like you’re needing to clear out a full time spot or anything

Hey Dirkie - check this out

Liam, who we both hate [me – because I’m a City fan, you – because for you hate is like oxygen] is a devoted follower of Manchester United Football Club. ManU, as it’s called, is owned by a family of Florida entrepreneurs called the Glazers. They also own the Tampa Bay Bucs of the NFL.

Anyway, the Glazers have loaded ManU with tons of debt since they bought the team and the outlook is rather bleak considering these tough economic times and the predatory nature of these greedy Florida ba$tards. There doesn’t seem to be any money left lying around from this incredibly profitable franchise because the Glazers are siphoning off the cream and leaving the kitty high and dry.

Reading this article, it’s pretty easy to see that Liam’s beloved juggernaut of a club is going to have to pay it’s debt out of it’s own profits because the Glazers won’t sell the team without an unrealistic windfall, and, according to the article, don’t have any other healthy businesses to pay off the ManU debt. This means no more shiny talented players for the forseeable future for Liam’s beloved United. And since their once-talented core is not aging so much as turning to dust right before Liam’s tear-filled stinging eyes, you might understand why worries among the ManU faithful exist.

An interesting aspect to this whole ballet of financial plunder and tradition torn asunder is that part of the Glazer’s woes revolve around the collapse of retail space investments made over the years. You might find the location of one of these retail properties very very interesting …

Four of the shopping centres have fallen insolvent due to empty store space and rents falling too low to cover the mortgages, in Columbus, Ohio; Denton County, Texas; Roswell, Georgia and Cobb County, Georgia.
Remember, Tron, woe to our enemies, for the 76201 will smite them in the end.
Denton will always come back to avenge those who transgress us.

by shroomer on Jun 7, 2010 4:55 PM CDT up reply actions

They'll be fine, sure

But there will be more offseasons like the last one where Obertan and Valencia are your only ‘impact’ signs. You better hope Macheda, Fabio and his bro and Evans really take some big steps forward this year or you pick up some nice loaners because the team won’t be able to make huge splashes in the market.

What's the rumpus?

by Hypo-Luxa on Jun 8, 2010 4:54 AM CDT up reply actions

Rafa to Inter

Good to see him landing on his feet so quickly. And what a fucking embarrassment for Liverpool- we’re going to be stuck with a manager who’s barely fit to manage a mid-table side, while the perfectly good manager we had goes to the defending European champs.

Oh, and the Royal Bank of Scotland issued a statement today that they’re getting fed up with Hicks not accepting what they believe to be fair offers for LFC. Apparently, he’s the one holding up the process- Gillett is far more eager to sell.

Is is too hard to find some reason to take Hicks’ teams away and throw the son of a bitch in jail? I have enough anger management issues without Hicks doing something to piss me the fuck off every damn day.

For those of you who haven't checked out...

SBNation Dallas.

I’ve been posting World Cup previews by group. I’m saving groups C and D for Friday, mainly because groups C and D are a bitch to write.

Meanwhile, here’s a super long article from the NYTimes about the youth system of Ajax. It proposes different theories on why the US soccer system is so failed.

by LiamP on Jun 9, 2010 11:49 PM CDT reply actions

Ajax

Cool article. Interesting to see the different “schools” of soccer development:

Europe: more training and mental development, less games

USA: games, games, and more games, then college

Africa/South America: learn on the streets

The USA method seems to be the least successful, but it’s worked in other sports like baseball and football, so I don’t dismiss it entirely. I do like the European academy approach, though- reminds me a lot of the old Eastern European sports academies, which churned out a ton of world-class athletes, even if a lot of it was fueled by steroids and relentless training methods.
