Monday a.m. Rangers things

I would be willing to bet that Eric Byrnes refers to money as "cheddar."

Very nice three game sweep against the M's this past weekend.  Three in Oakland the next three days, and looking at how the schedule shakes out, the Rangers have an opportunity to put a solid stretch together and see if they can stake a claim to the A.L. West.  Continuing to hover around .500 the rest of the month is not acceptable...this is a stretch where the Rangers need to add some wins.

Jeff Wilson's game story talks about how the Rangers have moved into first place with their win yesterday, although Ron Washington says being in first right now doesn't mean anything.

T.R. Sullivan's game story has quotes from Elvis Andrus and David Murphy on their big 9th inning hits that led to the tying run.

Evan Grant's post-game comments are here, and Richard Durrett's are here.

Evan Grant has a story up on the key moments from this weekend's series that saw the Rangers move from last to first in the A.L. West.

Frank Francisco believes his early season struggles were related to a mechanical flaw which he has fixed.  If so, I expect he'll be the semi-official closer again sooner rather than later, with Neftali Feliz going back to a setup role.

The S-T's notes include Rich Harden looking forward to his return to Oakland today, and Ron Washington saying he's not concerned about Michael Young's throwing, despite Young's three throwing errors in the past two games.

Grant writes that the Rangers' less-heralded pitchers out-dueled the M's aces this weekend.

Gil Lebreton writes that Ron Washington has survived another slow start to enter May in pretty good shape.

I think he also refers to his hair as “lettuce,” and probably is on the phone right now with Lenny, giving Lenny his credit card number so Lenny can put some jet fuel in his private plane.

well, the Mariner's offense had a lot to do with it, granted

but that 12 inning win only came because the Mariners left the bases loaded twice in the 10th and 11th, and even then we needed a bloop infield single, a throwing error and a passed ball to score.

Saturday’s win was solid. We beat up Felix, nothing lucky there.

But last night was more ugly baseball. We got Fisted all night then needed extra innings again to put away an inferior (in my eyes) team. So yeah, I felt pretty lucky to have gotten out with a sweep.

how were we lucky?

We faced two of Seattle’s aces and went 2/2. Facing aces like that isn’t always going to be pretty, but Seattle has no offense whatsoever. We beat an inept team more than anything, but with the way our starting pitchers have pitched we should feel very good at this point.

On the offensive side Hamilton is starting to come back, we have Kinsler now, Andrus is full of win, and I could go on.

Having a fly ball go just beyond the infield....

…..and not making it far enough for a sac fly is pretty lucky. Was it a good pitch or poor execution? Dunno.

by FuturePants on May 3, 2010 10:15 AM CDT up reply actions

I think the point is...

…there were games earlier this season where we said, geez, a break or two had just gone our way, we’d have won 2-3 more games.

If Treanor spends one more second fumbling around looking for the ball on the botched suicide squeeze, if Rob Johnson catches a couple of decent pitches, if a couple of breaks had gone against us rather than for us, we could have lost 2 of 3 this weekend.

I think his point is that the breaks sort of even out.

isn't this what you nerds call

regression to the mean?

"Drinks are on me if Lewis posts >168IP and an era lower than 3.86." by RangerMad on Jan 20, 2010 12:36 PM PST

by jam0152 on May 3, 2010 10:17 AM CDT up reply actions

Not exactly.

But it’s a pretty subtle distinction.

“Regression to the mean” is just the fact that if something’s gonna happen 50% (or whatever other percentage) of the time in a certain situation, then in future instances of that situation it will probably happen about 50% of the time.

So if we got unlucky in those early games where 3 50-50 plays went the other way, you can say “well, we’ll probably win future games at a slightly better pace than our current record since we’ll probably win half of those 50-50 games going forward.”

Here, though, we went 2-for-2 in close extra-innings games, and so while that does sorta even out our overall season luck record, it was also a bit unlikely.

Here’s a non-baseball example to try to help illustrate the difference: if you flip a coin 6 times and get 6 heads, that’s unlikely to continue. The “mean” number of heads per coin flip is one half, so over your next 6 flips you’d expect around 3 more heads; i.e., you’d expect it to be closer to (regress to) the mean. Getting 6 tails on your next 6 flips would be just as unlikely as the first 6 heads were, so even though it would even out your results over all 12 flips, it’s (probably) not going to happen.

What's somewhat fascinating in a dorky sort of way

is that LAAA, Oakland and Texas are all lumped together in the same sweaty sock as far as offense goes. OBPs between .315-.323 and runs scored between 102-113.

I think the team that can find a way to post a .335-.340 OBP will be the eventual winner of the AL West.

I'll try to remember that.

But I have a feeling the team with the better pitching staff will have the most wins. I won’t really quantify it with a particular stat, but the pitching will be the key. Attrition and depth are the two keys for that to work. I think we are setup to make a run at being the best in both of those categories.

Post Steroid Era?

Is it me or does it seem like all MLB offense is down these days? I know April is a slow hitting month, but, is there an easy data point to suggest runs are down?

by 3Bagger on May 3, 2010 10:07 AM CDT reply actions

Without looking up the details

it seems to me that every April we get a bunch of “why is scoring down?” questions that go away later in the year.

Pitchers took steroids, too, I wouldn’t put much stock in that being a cause or effect of anything. Look at home run totals over the last hundred years and you see a steady climb. The offense has more to do with expansion, shrinking strike zones, etc. than any sort of PEDs. PEDs are the most overblown thing in baseball, like, ever.

PED's

I agree with the first part, but, maybe I’m not used to the Rangers hitting so poorly and pitching so well? Maybe that’s it.

PED’s…no one was close to 60 HR’s and all of sudden everyone seemed to be? Now we seem to be closer to the older norms.

I will agree that discussing PED’s is a drag.

by 3Bagger on May 3, 2010 10:32 AM CDT up reply actions

Everyone?

Granted, the top 6 home run seasons of all time occured betwen 1998 and 2001, but they only included 3 people: Sammy Sosa, Mark McGwire, and Barry Bonds.

Even during that period only three other seasons over 50, Luis Gonzalez with 57, Griffey with 56, and A-Rod with 52 (Sosa and Greg Vaughn hit exactly 50).

Extend the time to 1996-2003 and we have 11 seasons over 50 homers, 39 seasons of 45 or more (there were a total of 134 seasons of 45 or more homers in history.)

Perhaps a better statement might be no one was close to 50 home runs and then everyone was. It did seem odd to go from a high of 35 in 1992 and 38 in 1991 (in the NL ) to 8 straight years where someone hit 50 or more (starting in 1995) even 1994 seemed odd with two 40 home run hitters despite the short schedule.

Oh my god! What can it be? We're all doomed! Who's flying this thing?

Prospectus Q&A with Eric Nadel is up today

Very interesting read about Nadel, his interactions with the players, and his view on the radio broadcaster’s duties in bringing the game to the fans: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=10726

I especially enjoyed this quote:

Texas is a warm-weather state with a very rich history of baseball and a lot of people who appreciate the history of baseball. It also has a lot of people—and this is important for me—in their cars; it has a lot of people on tractors. It has a lot of people on boats and on golf courses.

I’ve spent many an hour doing just that, driving a tractor listening to Nadel call a Rangers game on AM radio. Many, many good times from my youth spent with that combination.

I was taken to task on Saturday by Adam

for questioning the insertion of Treanor in the line-up and I also said something about Max needing a dog collar because it was very obvious that the thought of him in his line-up made Cocaine Ron’s skin crawl.

I didn’t see the game yesterday but it appeared from the play-by-play that Wash ph for Ramirez in a rather odd circumstance, albeit successfully with Vlad. It just seemed odd because Max had singled in his previous at bat and Wash suddenly found himself short a player when he had to lose his DH.

And the PH of Vlad for Ramirez was the least questionable call that Ron made. That was one I actually agreed with.

Wash and MaxRam

it wouldn’t surprise me if Wash didn’t like him. Wash is the type to irrationally prefer and dislike certain players.

The hope is that Max can do what Nellie Cruz did, force his way into Wash’s picture. I think the Ramirez, Cruz similarity goes deeper too, both are offense-centric players (though Cruz’s defense>>>> Max’s defense) who had trouble translating their minor league success to the majors. Cruz proved he deserved it, hopefully Max can too.

There is no one else who the Rangers can put in the MLB. Tea failed horribly, Salty can’t get the ball to the pitcher, and Garko, is well Garko and he’s up here as a RH DH platoon guy.

Max is going to play once a week until they think Salty pulls it together or they make a trade.

This way he has a decent bat on the bench to ph with. Say a time comes and Blanco is up, or Borbon is up versus a lefty. Max comes in, gets the AB and hopefully a hit, and then takes the reins for Treanor in the ninth. Teagarden does nothing, I mean nothing for this team right now.

I was Tea’s biggest supporter and he had every chance to do his thing. He did horrible and Max is her for that.

Max was going to play one game against Seattle this weekend

Would you rather that be against Felix or Fister?

Treanor has been on a roll lately so I think the decision to play him against Felix was the right one. Max needs to realize he is the backup and the best way to get more playing time aside from assaulting Treanor in an alley is to do something when you get the chance. One base hit doesn’t mean he is immune from being PH for in certain circumstances. I have no problem with Wash PHing for Max late in yesterdays game

Harrison's promise

is not nearly the level of Holland. The only reason that Holland was in AAA and Harrison in the Majors to start the year was the minor foot injury that Holland had at the very beginning of spring training. Since then, Harrison has pitched just barely well enough to keep his job.

Its become plain that the team won’t demote him and bring up holland on merit, so it might take an injury to make it happen.

Well, I think you're reading too much into this.

As of this point in the season

Treanor >>> Max

Wash was trying to win each of these games. Having Max’s lower defense and hitless self in against Fister was much more appealing than having Max in against Felix.

Max did well with Feldman (got him to the 7th inning with one run allowed)

and with CJ as well yesterday.

I believe Treanor is the superior defender but Max (.345 career OBP in The Show going into the season) is the better hitter and other than that one terrible moment with Nipples, hasn’t completely shit the bed defensively just yet.

It seems as though Max has been slotted by Wash which is fine but Matt Treanor is starting to look like Matt Treanor and that’s not an acceptable every day option.

A few things in play, Ryin.

Nadel confirmed exactly what I thought so I wasn’t just carping on Wash. What I said was a legitimate concern and Wash putting Treanor in the line-up Saturday/pinch-hitting for Max on Sunday confirms that Wash can’t stand having Max on the team.

Per Max, I think there’s a chance he could be a decent hitter in The Show based on what he did over a long period of time in the minors.

He’s caught two games up here and in both games the starters went to the 7th inning having allowed one run so he hasn’t completely shit the bed in that regard.

Wash is treating Matt Treanor as though he’s Johnny Bench circa 1970 and pretty soon we’re going to have 2010 Matt Treanor on our hands and it’s not going to be pretty.

I also know Teagarden probably can’t play at this level and I have major doubts about Salty getting his act together.

As ghastly as it may sound, we may need Max this year.

Max was hurt last year.

OT: Chris Davis

So i was out this weekend for a friend’s bday. Went to dinner and then went out to KSP. I was talking with a buddy when these two cute girls starting talking to us. We pounded a few adult beverages and talked with them for a bit (as much as we could with crappy Lady Gaga music playing in the background). Come to find out that one of the girls is Chris Davis’ ex gf from the last 2 yrs of HS and first 2 yrs of college at Navarro. It was quite funny ha.

I talked to her and was like “wow, i wish Chris Davis could hit..” I was to about to say a slider but she interrupted me and said “a F@#$ing baseball!!! What the F@#$?!?” and went from there haha. Just thought it was pretty funny.

I'm a little shocked by this, boomer.

I really can't pinpoint it for you Josey

Maybe it wasn’t any one thing just a combo of things that lead up to this. Maybe its my sister that is a Yankmee fan making fun of all the Rangers fans and the Rangers. Either way fuck Ron.

Wash was playing for the win

He was risking losing the game with more extra innings for the better chance of winning it right now. It was a risky move, but one I’m okay with him making. If he can start doing that with his bullpen management, I’d be even happier (abandon pitching roles to play for the win).

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Probably not after using the pen so much in the last two games..

Oliver had gone both nights, Fx2 too, so they were unavailable.

Probably a good time to try and roll the dice a bit.

Someone may have posted this, but I thought this was an interesting opinion

from Callis Friday:

Pat G (Long Island)

Bigger impact in 2010: Holland or Tillman…..better career?

Jim Callis (2:51 PM)

Holland for both.

I just have this feeling

that the team takes off when Holland is called up (for Harrison).
The sooner he’s up — the better.

The team is 8-3 in its last 11 games

how much more do you want them to take off?

you're right

and that’s certainly sustainable with a replacement level pitcher in the rotation. wtf was I thinking?

by elvis1isking on May 3, 2010 2:28 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, it is

he only pitches one out of 5 games and they’re not going to let him stay if he keeps pitching like that indefinitely.

Obviously, I support bringing up Holland soon. Just wanted to point out that the team has won 8 out of its last 11.

by t ball on May 3, 2010 2:37 PM CDT up reply actions

I know

but I think things like this build on themselves. 8 out of 11 is great — really really great. But getting on a 7 or 8 game winning streak is even better, and replacing Harrison (or Harden) with Holland makes that more possible — at least to me.

A bit emotional and hyperbolic for sure — I’m just ready to see Holland come up and I believe good things will (continue to) happen when he does.

by elvis1isking on May 3, 2010 2:55 PM CDT up reply actions

definitely

I said before the season that I expected Holland to be a good mid-rotation starter no later than this year. I’m even more excited to get him back up here than I was for Smoak to come up.

Face's throws

I haven’t been watching games, only listening of following on Gameday, so I haven’t seen for myself. And I know this has probably been discussed ad nauseam in the GDTs which I have been too busy at work to follow. But I’ll ask this anyway.

Have MYs throws been worse recently than in the past, or is it just the CD was really, really good at picking errant throws out of the dirt, while Smoak is just average. I’ve definitely seen some plays where Smoak is not catching those short hopped balls which CD always seemed to snag with no problems.

From my perspective

it appears they are a little of both. Smoak should have had a one hopper that was bounced about 7 feet in front of him. But some of MY’s throws have been way off, even when he has a decent amount of time to throw.

I just believe MY is in a little slump on defense and hopefully will turn it around. Couple his slump with losing CD who has a better ability to scoop and stretch over Smoak, and the suckiness gets amplified.

To me

Young’s throwing issues are due to dropping his elbow below his ear and slinging it over there three quarters. The throws all seem to fade down the first base line towards home plate making Smoak stretch into the runner. It could be a bad habit or it could be he is having some elbow discomfort and trying to compensate for it.

Some of both

Two of his throws, we’re used to seeing scooped up but in this series they were not. One throw, after a pretty good stab immediately behind the bag at 3B, was so far or the plate side of 1B that converting it to an out would have been a small miracle. Even on that one, Smoak left his feet and tilted, rather than taking the two steps necessary to simply catch it and let the runner have 1B.

I remember one missed pick in particular (but don't think it was the SEA series)

Smoak swiped at a ball, left to right, that was coming straight at him on a short hop, rather than just holding his glove in place and letting the ball land in it. He ended up knocking the ball to the side.

Harden vs Sheets

However lousy Harden has been, Sheets has been horrible.
