Minors 5/5 (aka Kirkman's on a roll)
5/5
11a, OKC featuring Kirkman versus ex-Rangers farmhand Luis Mendoza
11:30 FRS, Roark
9p, BAK, Gomez
6p, Ross (AOFP 56)
Kirkman, who apparently has an AOFP higher than #16 Michael Main's 56, has started the day nicely with 2 IP, 5 K, 1 H, 0 BB, 0 ER. Including his 2 IP today, his last 16.2 IP looks very, very nice 0 ER, 5 H, 6 BB, 19K.
Oh, and Chad Tracy went yard for the 7th time this season.

what is Kirkman's role with the Rangers?
bullpen ala CJ type later in the year? We have quite a few lefties that seem close to the bigs in bullpen roles – Rapada, Snyder, and Phillips.
Kirkman’s sub 2 ERA is looking pretty sexy, especially with the Ks. I’m loving how our minor league pitching has come out of the gate, with the exception of Kiker and his regression with his control which seemed impossible.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
I want to learn more about how he's been going about getting these nasty results.
Has his stuff taken another step forward this season? Or, is he commanding his pitches better? Or, what?
Based on the AOFP series by Jason Parks, Kirkman’s ceiling will grade out at the very least as a mid-rotation stater.
Pro baseball has always been a dream, so this is pretty freakin’ cool out here. -- Tim Steggall, undrafted Rangers minor leaguer.
Boo on the 53-54 (haha)
I believe his velo picked up a bit this season, iirc.

Boggs goes deep, his fourth on the season. A 3-run ding-dong.
His 1.037 OPS might increase after today.

Murph is arb after this year right?
We should look to trade him and go with the cheaper and guy who can play CF in Boggs.

You want to trade a proven ML 4th OF
for and unproven player when your team is trying to reach the playoffs?
Thank you Houston for drafting Jason Castro.
Proven that he can't hit LHP or play CF

+1
if we’re committed to trimming the fat on our team, murphy has to go. He’s doing worse than chris davis was.
baseBALLIN!
He's grittier, though

If you were cutting the fat
you’d start out with that sub 500 OPS CF we trot out there.

But, but
Murphy is a Texas guy, he went to school at Baylor. You can’t just trade a Texan and replace him with a Missourian. Just kidding, Boggs impressed me when he came up several years ago. I don’t know see that Murphy has much trade value though, Murphy would be more valuable to this team if there wasn’t already two left-handed hitting outfielders. Murphy is what he is, a fourth outfielder that can occasionally comes through with a timely hit. Boggs probably offers a slight improvement and more versatility defensively. But they are both kind of “meh” players and it is so much more amusing being able to watch the goofy looking, lanky Murphy play.
Kirkman
He grades out in the 53-54 range. Lots of present solid-avg stuff and a very good idea of what to do with it. Good prospect.
Ah, so Kirkman just missed being on the top 25 highest ceilings list.
I guessed incorrectly then.

I could have featured him in the 22-25 range
Instead, I decided to profile a few lesser known guys like Randol Rojas and Chad Bell.
Martinez, Doyle, Tullis, and Pimentel grade out in the 53-54 range as well. I had to make some cuts.
I thought that was a given.
Men in baseball pants are full of win. It’s good to know Parks is such a liberated man. Tullis in those pants makes it hard to concentrate on the white ball with red stitching.
I forget, you're a female right?

Yes
Baseball pants on the majority work but for some guys it does nothing. Regardless tball opened the door and I could not pass by uncommented upon.
Awesome
It caused me to look twice until I remembered you weren’t a guy.

Well everyone
could use some gay humor on occasion. The fact that most do a double take or just stare horrified at their computer because they have no idea is rather amusing.
That, and...
He’s hard to scout because he already has a mature body and two relatively mature pitches, but he also has some projection, but it’s hard to tell how much because he is pitching in bursts. The small sample size makes it hard to determine the trajectory of his breaking ball.
I gave the slider a chance to become an average major league pitch, but I just got a report that the slider has been looking great. Of course, it’s hard to tell how great because his CU is so advanced at this point, making his other pitches play-up above their grade, especially against Low A hitters. As I said, Tullis is difficult to scout. I have his report written, but I’d like another look at him before going forward with it.
That projection
is part of the reason I’m hopeful. His late start and relative lack of experience give me hope that his stuff is going to mature further and stay effective at higher levels. I hope so, because those K and GB rates are nice. I still don’t see him as any more than a potential 3rd starter at some point, but that’s a pretty darn nice draft pick in that round.
Ceterum censeo, Ron Washington esse delendam
Great draft pick
I have him projected as a solid 4/5 at the major league level. His FB is heavy, but lacks elite velocity, so his command will need to be sharp as he climbs. His CU is very good, with good shape and sinker movement.; it’s the perfect pitch to play-off his FB. His slider shows some promise, but I need to see more of it before I attach a higher grade to it. At this point, Tullis looks like a pitcher that could develop into a solid innings eater type, with good GB rates and a small margin of error.
Thanks
for the details, I’ll look forward to an update whenever you get to see him again.

That all sounds nice, but hopefully he's the Rangers' version of Hellickson.

Tea just got a hit!!!
A bad hop single that caught the lip of the grass! yay
[btw, Jim Byers just commented that Boggs has played CF “beautifully” since Gentry got called up. just sayin’]
Of course Ron would just
relegate him to the end of the bench.

“He knows what he wants,” Frisco pitching coach Jeff Andrews said. “He’s advanced in the sense that he’s not afraid to go after it. I don’t think that’s typical of a lot of 19-year-olds, who may be unsure of themselves and what direction they want to go or if they’re talented enough or if they’ve worked hard enough. That’s the difference, to me, that separates him the most.”
“We’re taking a kid that’s still in his first professional season and there’s still the idea that you want him to use all his pitches, to develop all his pitches, give himself a sense of can he throw them for strikes, what to use ahead in the count, etc.,” said Andrews, interviewed prior to Scheppers’ promotion to Triple-A. “And he’s done that. A lot of times, guys will get caught up in the moment on the field and say, ‘I can just use my slider’ or ‘I can just use my fastball and get through these two innings,’ but he hasn’t done that. His grasp of the big picture is pretty good.”
Nice to read, thanks.

Plus a walk.
Promote him already.
Meh. lettim crush in HIckory a while.
Bakersfield is the worst place on Earth that’s not in the midst of genocide and/or ruled by the Taliban.
Certainly it’s the worst place in America.
Don’t make him go there.
With his past I don’t think we need to expose him to that post-apocalyptic wasteland and the roving gangs who control its streets.

Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!
Who are we kidding... the New Orleans ghetto is worse than Deroit multiplied by Bakersfield.
At least in Detroit there’s not enough money to buy bullets, and in Bakersfield sometimes the sandstorms disorient the criminals and provide a nice natural cover as you try to go about your day without being shot and/or hostage.

thought that was gonna read scout who saw him pitch and suggested he be drafted was fired
that's a good sign
maybe he’ll have some trade value, and we can add him in a deal at the deadline

even with his increase in plate discipline
he’s still below league avg in a league he’s repeating. Beltre is a prime bust candidate that I think we should deal.
