Warner Madrigal has joined Frisco on a rehab stint.
Eric Hurley should be eligible to start a rehab stint [30 days into 60-day DL] by this weekend.

Bleier goes for Frisco tonight - needs a big outing you'd think.

7.62 ERA, not striking anybody out but is getting plenty of GO’s.
.327 BAA, and LH bats are hitting .314 off him for a 10.80 ERA vs lefties. bleh
You might wonder if he’s getting BABIP’ed to death – .333 – barely unlucky I guess.
Only 5 walks in 26 IP is very nice, but 4 HRs allowed is nearly half his 2009 total already.

You’d think if a BAK arm was sizzling he could be in trouble for demotion, but not much threat from below really. Brigham’s numbers are nice but trending the wrong direction. Main and Gomez don’t really need to come up. The Rangers plan on building up Scheppers’ innings and putting him in the OKC roto – which could bump Ballard down into Bleier’s spot – but that won’t be for a coupla weeks even if it does pan out. Danny Gutierrez isn’t due back until June 1st or so, Bleier’s safe there as well. They might have him tandem with Eric Hurley, if Hurley is healthy enough – we’ll see on Hurley soon.

Safe for now I suppose, but overall, he’d better turn it around or he’s gonna lose his AA turn.

Hickory's team stats

Team ERA is 4th in the SAL, but they lead the league in Ks, and are 3rd best in BBs allowed. Very solid team WHiP and HRs allowed – 2nd best runs allowed.

The bats aren’t bad either. 3rd best Team OPS. 4th best in earning BBs and 2nd lowest K total – VERY un-Ranger-like. [Jason Hart is the hitting coach there if you’re curious.] 2nd best HR total. The amazing thing is that they’re putting up all these nice team batting stats with freakin’ Cristian Santana playing LF every day! ouch

[Actually, Cristian Santana is doing pretty well despite struggling mightily against LHP, which should turn around. Only 20-yrs-old. Miracles do happen!]

His last start was so crazily out of character (read: Good) that his overall statline isn't half bad right now.

That’s what early season SSS will do for you, though.

Before that game he had a 17-8 k/bb in 17 innings.

After he forgot to suck he now has a 26-8 k/bb in 23 innings.

As much as I hate him and think it’d be awesome if someone could find some sort of device that would pour poisonous spiders down his pants everytime he walked a batter, I’d love it if he could defy all medical logic and actually turn the corner and be decent at pitching for a change.

Still, I hate him so much.

but he’s clipping along at .342/.432/.500 with just 7 Ks over his last 10 games. Mitch being Mitch.

Except against LHP – .133 – not good, but only 15 ABs. Jim Byers commented the other day that Moreland has looked just fine in the OF – big arm and has made a few decent catches. FWIW.

So, a question for the pro prospect evaluators....

Does Boggs have any chance of providing ML-average CF defense?

I had totally written him off at the beginning of the season, even thinking they could slide him off the 40. Now, I’m wondering fi he does have defensive chops whether JD would send Borbon down to clear his head and reward another guy for having good ABs.

I think that has more to do

with the pitch being lower in the strike zone than anything else.

Here is a much better and clearer look at Velazquez’s swing. As you can see, he does not lunge much. His hands and back-leg do a wonderful job at rotating congruently, enabling him to generate more power in the lower body, very similar to Pujols.

That's the old Rayzor Ranch, if you remember the little spread up on the hill there.

Had a herd of Longhorn cattle wandering around there since forever – I grew up 3 blocks away.

A huge commercial development was planned – kinda like a post-mall-era shopping complex with a bank of apartment houses running down Bonnie Brae and Medical offices along Scripture facing the hospital. A band shell and a atmospherey lake in the middle of it. I think the recession set the brakes hard on some of the plans there. The Medical offices will go in, maybe the apts, too, but the commercial/retail plans I think are being toned down a tad.

Across University dr there, in that empty field, a Sam’s Club and other retailers are going in big time. Strip Center heavan over there now. University dr has been widened down there to accomodate the expected traffic targeting both sides of the street.

Out on loop 288 are tentative plans for a huge residential area near the end of Bonnie Brae – but I think that kinda got squealched some by the recession, too. Kinda went hand-in-hand with the commercial project there at Rayzor Ranch.

Here’s the website with all the grandiose plans that the recession bit down hard upon.

Always figured it was only a matter of time before it got gobbled up and developed into some kind of butt shit like this.

I loved that damn place.

It was always just so wonderfully random to have a big ass cow pasture with huge longhorns grazing right off Bonnie Brea and the highway there in the middle of town.

I wish it wasn’t strip mall central, but you gott put strip malls somewhere, I suppose.

Woulda been perfect for UNT and/or a city park, but money’s money, and I suppose building one of those cookie cutter stucco forests makes a shit ton more money than building a park and/or selling/donating to a University.

Thanks for the info.

So you grew up by that big ass water tower then?

Figures you’d be so ugly.

People who live by big ass water towers end up uglier than butt shit 99% of the time.

Where the houses are newer and have big back yards… to accommodate our larger-than-average penises, of course.

Q to JP on Robbie E (AOFP 56)

Is it Erlin’s breaking pitches that make him so good at K’ing Low A hitters? It’s curious that his repertoire grades out just a bit above average and his K/9 > 9.

Pro baseball has always been a dream, so this is pretty freakin’ cool out here. -- Tim Steggall, undrafted Rangers minor leaguer.

by rooster on May 7, 2010 12:44 PM CDT reply actions

Guys with advanced secondary pitches

often do well in the low minors since those hitters are less advanced and weak against that stuff. Erlin, though, looks like a guy with good enough stuff to keep succeeding (though not with such video game stats) in the upper levels as well.

Right

Low A hitters tend to be overly aggressive, most often looking FB. Erlin is able to set hitters up using his FB, which he shows solid command of at the present. After he gets their timing locked in, he uses his CB and CU to force weak contact and/or misses. When they adjust, he adjusts. Erlin has both stuff and pitchability. Good combo for such a young arm.

by t ball on May 7, 2010 10:30 PM CDT up reply actions

The thing JP nailed was ...
Weaknesses: Despite fringe-plus velocity on present fastball, Thompson is quite hittable; leaves too many pitches in the zone (throws too many strikes and not enough quality strikes) and FB can get straight and visible. CU is improving, but when he overthrows the pitch at (83-84) it tends to hang in the zone and lacks the sink/fade movement and velocity variance it offers at (80-81).

.301 BAA in 2009 – .274 so far in 2010. Something to watch for improvement.

From BP, via Scott Lucas
Matt Thompson (2.27 ERA) fanned a career-high nine batters in 6.2 innings while allowing a run on four hits and a walk. He’s struck out 38 in 31.2 innings this season, good for a 29% rate, compared to only six walks.

Thompson was the subject of a glowing (subscription-only) report by Kevin Goldstein in yesterday’s Baseball Prospectus. One scout referred to him as the "perfect projection pitcher" with "80 delivery [and] arm action (on the 20-80 scouting scale)."

That there is high praise indeed.

Last night riders game

Perez looked sharp early, then after a few innings looked like he might have been elevating his pitches some.
Not sure if he was pulled for pitch count or because he wasn’t faring as well in the 4th and 5th.

Finally saw Ogando and the fastball is as advertised.

Said hi to Ryan Tatusko, really friendly guy seemed to appreciate hearing people saying they read his stuff on newberg’s report.

I tooks some pic’s and video I may or may not get around to doing anything with this week
