What a great band.

Maybe...
…second half of the top 10 though.
Here’s the question…are there any top 10 bands that debuted in the aughts?
If Brad Pitt is playing Beane who do you want playing you?
JD: Eddie Guardado.
Surely you don't consider them one of the ten greatest bands of all time, do you?
"I’m gonna go on record here and say a great many things excuse throwing a chair at someone." – D.A. Tron
no not at all
and my post said, " no…but mars volta are pretty darn good"
i consider them my favorite active band though. i also like he is legend, horse the band and rise against.
maybe rise against and mars will be a top 10 favorite of mine in the future.
Horse the Band
Just started listening to them in the past couple of weeks. I’m really diggin it. New album on the 18th..
Some other artists I would suggest..
Bright Eyes (“I’m wide awake it’s morning” is a great album) / Conor Oberst (The song Cape Canaveral and Lenders in the Temple)
Bon Iver (Skinny Love-Great Song)
Blonde Redhead
As Tall as Lions
annnnd Avril Lavigne.
listen to Road to Joy
do it now
You hear about the "Electric Arms", they're all the rage.

where did you see
that they have a new album out on the 18th? i don’t see that anywhere.
i may give them a shot.
totally different genre, check out Opeth.
I'm kind of through
my “heavy” phase. The only thing I really listen to thats heavy anymore is Every Time I Die, August Burns Red, and BTBAM
That was a total..
idiot moment. I know who both of those bands are. But it’s a funny kind of idiocy.
I can't name you 10 total

I hope the people who think...
…the ASG should be about rewarding the players who have the best first halves, and not the best players, are waiting to vote until the weekend before balloting closes.

it's ridiculous
player “x” was badass the first month of the year. let’s vote for him 25 times right now!
same player fizzles the rest of the half (like kinsler last year?)
Interleague Killed the All-Star Game
I’m personally of the opinion that interleague play destroyed the all-star game in its current format. Free agency has, of course, played a large role in muddying these waters as well.
The All-Star game used to be awesome because many match-ups could only happen in the world series and thusly were vary rare. It was a great opportunity to see the best hitters matching up against the best pitchers, match-ups which you’d potentially never see otherwise.
And Video Killed the Radio Star

Pretty sure just the first played on MTV

Kinda what I thought too,
because I’ve seen some videos from Iggy and the Stooges that look like they were made in 1972.

yeah there were a lot of videos even earlier than that.

I've seen country music videos from the 60s
They were obviously pretty simple, normally the singer being recorded while performing on the Louisiana Hayride or something, but a music video no less.
"I’m gonna go on record here and say a great many things excuse throwing a chair at someone." – D.A. Tron
There were others
I think the Stones had one, and I want to say Led Zeppelin had one. The Who. They were more performance oriented back then, I believe. But didn’t Jefferson Airplane do one for White Rabbit? Seems like I saw that one time and it was just a bunch of crazy, psychedelic imagery.
by Black Francis on May 7, 2010 4:51 PM CDT up reply actions
Yep,
I love watching them though. Outstanding music, with simplistic videos. That’s a great combination.
by lost in space on May 7, 2010 4:55 PM CDT up reply actions
The Beatles had several videos as promos of their singles
They did promo vids as far back as Paperback Writer/Rain in June ’66. Probably the first music video. They filmed it as a substitute for live performances after they tired of constant touring.

"If the Rangers have marked improvement in 2010, I'm going to need to give JD credit." Josey Wales, Feb. 10, 2010 11:45 AM CST
I don't particularly like Queen, but I have to respect them
The chords and rhythm/meter changes are really interesting. The meter goes from 4 to 3, back to 4, and later to a slower, hemiola 3 and it all sounds perfectly natural. The chords, descending in minor 3rds through chords not at all related to the purported key. That’s stuff that composers like Beethoven, Mahler and Bartok used for effect (without such catchy lyrics, but perhaps a bit more sophistication). Good stuff. All of their songs have some interesting stuff even if I do find it all a bit to glittery and theatrical for my taste in its application.
Ceterum censeo, Ron Washington esse delendam
Same for me
I respect immensely what they did. Musically it’s way beyond most rock n’ roll bands. I just have never been able to get into it.
by Black Francis on May 7, 2010 3:05 PM CDT up reply actions
Yeah
The key changes on some of their songs (notably, Rhapsody) drive me insane. But it adds an element of depth that’s rarely there with other bands.
http://oursaviorchuck.ytmnd.com/
It's nearly cheap and gimmicky in that song
and others, but still, they were definitely original.
Ceterum censeo, Ron Washington esse delendam
I've always thought that Queen
was much more than a sum of it’s parts. They just had a vibe that was unmatched. I’ve heard Brian May in other groups and projects and it just didn’t match what he did in that band.

Elvis wasn't selling out stadiums
because he was over 50 at a time when there were other people coming up. By that measure you should say that Paul McCartney and Mick Jagger are the greatest entertainers of all.
People are depressed about Losing Freddy, but there isn’t an entire genera devoted to Freddie Mercury impersonators. 1000 years from now people will look back at Elvis with awe.

-Wash
yes
because he was the first mainstream sex-appeal superstar. Like I said below, the quality and importance of an artists is different than entertainment value. You go see Elvis BECAUSE he is Elvis and the legacy and importance he represents, that’s why Elvis was admired and loved. You go see Queen and Freddie Mercury because it’s entertaining; they’re music can’t really compare to other bands even though it’s pretty good, but they were the most entertaining band to watch in my opinion

I forgot. I though he was like 50 something. and I’m 42 now. Its incredible how amazingly little time he spent in the limelight. 1956 to 1960, then made movies until 1967, then his great comeback from 68-73 (the vegas years), then his deteriation and death in 77.

the greatest? No
One of the greatest? yes.
top 5? sure…
however:
1) Elvis (not the shortstop)
2) Michael Jackson
3-7) Freddy, Kenny Rogers, Garth, Celine, Johnny Cash, Paul McCartney,
other greats) Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Carlos Santana, Janis, and many many others since.
I’m not a fan of country music (so forgive me for not including Tennessee williams. I also didn’t include Earl Scruggs, who I like 10000 times more than Celine Dion or Johnny Cash).
Michael Jackson was a scum of a human being, but he’s kinda like the Ty Cobb of Music. Not quite as good as the Babe (or the King), but good enough to have been the best othrwise.

Queen is left out of the talk of “best bands” pretty often, when, in fact, they are one of the best band ever, then no, they aren’t overrated.
They’re awesome.

Speaking of overratedness--
The Who are extremely overfuckingrated.

no.
no they are not. i can understand some arguments
while TOMMY may be overrated, the band is not.
i might agree that they only had 1 great album (who’s next) but they have so many great songs.
Another wrong opinion

I couldnt sleep last night
and spent a couple of hours on Lookout Landing. That is just pure unalderated comedy of a type rarely seen. They were alternating between despair at the suckitude of the M’s and despair at the ranger’s come from behind win. I laughed till I hurt

It's been hit or miss with me today as well....
…like Michael Young.
If Brad Pitt is playing Beane who do you want playing you?
JD: Eddie Guardado.
Since we're talking about music....
I just found out that The Black Keys are opening for Kings of Leon when the tour comes to Houston in September. I was a little late to the Kinds of Leon party (had only heard OF them before Use Somebody), but I had no idea who The Black Keys were until they showed up on a Pandora station about a year ago. Now that I’ve gotten more into both bands, this is pretty exciting.
Also, The Black Keys are coming out with a new album on May 18th- “Brothers”

I like the Black Keys a lot...
the Movie Trading Company by my house has their last album on record for $16, I think I may get it this weekend. Didn’t realize they had a new one coming out soon.

Kings of Leon are good live.
Saw them at ACL several years ago at 10:00 AM before anyone knew who they were.

A "Queen" thread and none of you assholes bring up the fact they did the entire soundtrack for "Flash Gordon"
Unreal.
