Baseball is ninety percent mental and the other half is Elvis Andrus.

The best possible thing in baseball is winning the World Series. The second best thing is Elvis Andrus.

Love is the most important thing in the world, but Elvis Andrus is pretty good too.

Elvis Andrus is the Texas Rangers.

UPDATE: Video proof that this did indeed happen.

I can't believe...

Dayton Moore actually wanted Yuni. Like, he sought him out to play for his baseball team. He didn’t just settle upon someone because they were already in the system, he thought this was a good idea and went out and made it happen.

by ghostofErikThompson on May 8, 2010 1:25 AM CDT up reply actions

Didn't he say at the time that Betancourt's defense was one of the main things

they liked about him? I think I remember reading that at the time…

Betancourt had a -20.9 UZR/150 last year. LOL.

The Royals are really just sad. Even their bullpen is just a bunch of Rangers rejects. Watching them brings back really bad memories from the not too distant past.

by Rangers100 on May 8, 2010 1:32 AM CDT up reply actions

This is what he said...

upon being criticized for acquiring perhaps the worst baseball player in the league while also sending his number three prospect to Seattle for him:

"The defensive statistics – I still really don’t understand how some of those statistics are evaluated, I really don’t. When you watch baseball games every single day, its very apparent who can play defensively and who can’t."

by ghostofErikThompson on May 8, 2010 1:47 AM CDT up reply actions

A bunch of Ranger rejects... and the mother fuckinf Mexicutioner.

They’re not all that bad off.

They have Greinke.

Also, Butler is really good and really young.

Plus their minor league system is really damn solid.

This dude does mad rapes. I’d love for him to be doing sex crimes for us.

My mancrush from the ’08 draft is finally doing mad rapes as well. No idea what was wrong with him last year.

Oh, and HOLY FUCKING SHIT. Stop it, dude. JUST STOP. Shit’s mean.

So, yah. Montgomery, Handsome Hoss, Mosse Tacos, Cheslor Cuthbert, Noel Arguelles, Will Myers (love him), Aaron Crow, Dwyer, Lamb, Duffy, Melville (though he’s looking rather lost and/or injured right now)…

Fucking loaded.

They’ve drafted like renegade rapists with easy access to crow bars and large quantities of lubricant.

It’s Moore’s big league moves that are holding them back.

Meche, Guillen, Fransworth, Yunieski, Kendall, etc.

They’re in a position to be real rapists in 2 years or so.

It’s likely to be a Doug Melvin situation, though, where a guy comes in and gets all the credit for winning with the young guys the previous GM acquired.

Cause I have genuine doubts that Dayton’s gonna last long enough to see those dudes make it.

I'm obviously pleased with who we ended up with as well. But that's nothing against Handsome.

Like KoK said… he’s 3 years younger.

You expect a high schooler to be behind an advanced college bat from the same draft.

And .404 /.496 / .576 / 1.072 has to count as more than “a little something”, yah?

With Smoak up, he’d be pretty clearly our top position prospect, imo. (That’s not saying a shit ton, though… Until Beltre, Velazquez or maybe one of last year’s j2’s starts to prove some shit we won’t really have a lot of stiff competition for that honor.)

But given our need for offense now, fuck yah Smoak was better for us.

but we needed a 1B badly since the departure of Prickteira; the sooner the better…Hosmer can run into a lot of trouble between A ball and the majors.

Alex Gordon's donerton.

But Moose Tacos, Hosmer and Montgomery are a fucking beastly big three, and adding a stud like Myers and then Crow as well really helped them take the next in terms of prospectness, imo.

I love their system.

I wanted Myers so fucking bad.

it was a nice play, but the guy just leaned over into the dugout for a popup.

It didn’t require near the skill level and wasn’t as difficult as that Andrus play imho.

It was more than a lean and much more critical to the outcome of the game.

Anyway, someone shouldn’t be “shocked” that a person would put that play above Andrus’s.

by Rangers100 on May 9, 2010 8:42 PM CDT up reply actions

Joey's got a real smooth viddy of the play up ...

LINK — The two things I like are his body position when the ball contacts his glove – ready to leap … and the hint that maybe Smoak nonchalanted his body language over at 1B enough to coax Guillen into pulling up a step short of the bag, gaining that crucial beat of time for the out.

by LSJ on May 8, 2010 9:32 AM CDT reply actions   1 recs

there are some beautiful quotes in that story
Young also knows there is debate about his future at shortstop. There has been speculation that he may have to switch positions at some point, especially when Double-A Frisco shortstop Elvus Andrus is ready. But Young is quite clear with his feelings about a possible position switch.

“Not anytime soon I’m not,” Young said, who admits to strong feelings and stubbornness about the subject. “Because I’ve had to defend my defense so much, I feel I’ve had to develop a certain amount of stubbornness. But I don’t see that change taking place anytime soon.”
Washington said Young’s range could improve with better positioning. Right now, Young plays what Washington calls a “straight-up shortstop.” When he learns to shade hitters in the right situations, Washington said his range will get better.

Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?

but to not know anything about a guy who plays your own position (better than you) is stupid.

Well, when you're the Derek Jeter of Texas

Worshipped by the fans and the media and chewing up nearly a third of the teams payroll, you’re not going to be worrying about the kid down in AA. He no doubt thought his “status” assured that his position at short was locked down for at least another year or two.

My brother (a Rockies fan who gets to watch Tulo) and I are watching the Yankees.

Jeter just whiffed on slow roller about two steps to right by a foot. We both let out audible “oh my gods!” and talked about how much worse Jeter looks when you see greatness and range-for-miles at shortstop every night.

I mean, seriously, the only way anyone can think he’s good defensively is by never ever watching another shortstop for any extended period of time. I know that scouting as a fan is flawed and a pretty small sample, but some things are obvious. Elvis’s awesome and Jeter’s bad are obvious.
