Bakersfield and Visalia brawl after Engel Beltre home run (video)
We now have YouTube video of the brawl that broke out after the Bakersfield and Visalia game, where the Visalia players apparently took offense at Engel Beltre's excessive flava as he hit a walk-off home run. Confrontation at third base, Beltre having to be pulled away to finish touching home plate, then benches emptying and punches being thrown...

Looks like the 3B and SS were on the base path during Beltre's home run trot.
They should be walking off the field not talking in the infield.

I think that was the pitcher, not the SS
And I think they were out there to let him know they didn’t appreciate the way he threw his bat up in the air and admired his home run.

I think you're right that it was the pitcher
Not often you see a pitcher yell at a batter while he’s running the bases after hitting a home run, much less start a confrontation.

It's a walk-off... you celebrate that shit and the other team jogs off the field with their penises fully in shame position, that's how it works.

My apartment is literally the very last one down a verrrry long hallway. Walking girls out (or if they go themselves) is hilarious because it’s almost inevitable that they run across some normal resident of my hallway before they finally get out.
It’s always obvious when a girl is leaving wearing going out clothes (or some ridiculous costume) the next day. I find it especially amusing.

BTW
It looks like the many prospects that struggled last year have turned corner this year:
Beltre
Main
Ramirez
Beavan (last year was hardly a struggle, but I think this year he is taking a big step forward)
Jack Daddy
Not sure Main has really "turned the corner" this year.
Unless you’re talking about giving up home runs to opposing batters.

Main is a fly ball pitcher
pitching in a home park that is 354 to CF. That might have something to do with it.

Wait?
The CF at Bakersfield is only 354? WTF does it double as a 12-year old girls softball stadium? How is that possible in professional baseball?

The Cal League resides in an alternate universe
"I’m gonna go on record here and say a great many things excuse throwing a chair at someone." – D.A. Tron
It plays like a normal outfield
Despite the fact that there are lots of warning track fly balls. It’s hard to hit a ball out to center there.
Actually...
…Bakersfield is only moderately homer-friendly and plays neutral overall. Tall fence, reasonably deep corners, and a couple of video-game parks (Lancaster, High Desert) to make the rest of the league look pitcher-friendly.
"Most of Jesus’s parables were economic parables, and they were free-market parables." -- Andrew Schlafly
Let's not get too excited, though
All of those guys still have questions. And look up the last time Beltre walked, and his BaBIP for May. Encouraging month, but hardly a breakout.
Ceterum censeo, Ron Washington esse delendam
Yup.
Beltre looks like he’s having a good year for high A, but he still doesn’t look like much of a prospect. It is a little encouraging, though.
From what I understand...
…he’s also considered to be a terrific defensive CF’er.

Doesn't look like much of a prospect?
That’s a bit of a ridiculous statement.
And we’re really looking at BaBIP for A-ball players?
Yeah, let us not forget the fact that minor league fielders are involved in calculating a prospect's BABIP
"I’m gonna go on record here and say a great many things excuse throwing a chair at someone." – D.A. Tron
Exactly.
Beltre is going to be 20 years old all season in a league filled with 24- and 25-year-old players.
Look up Manny Pina’s BaBIP his first year in Clinton. Was he unlucky? No. He rarely hit a ball out of the infield.
This isn’t the majors where everyone is on the same level. In A ball, you’re going to have advanced players that crush the ball every time up, and you’re going to have younger players like Pina that year that almost never make solid contact.
And thus, why I dislike statistical analysis in the minors––it’s not a good predictor of anything at all. It’s nice to put up numbers, but analyzing them is generally an exercise in futility. It’s just not that black and white in the minors.

Have you ever seen Beltre play?
Because it doesn’t seem like it. Beltre was a notorious first-pitch hacker that would chase no matter where it was. He was swinging at fastballs in the dirt. Yeah, he’s swinging a lot these days, and he was more aggressive the last two days than he was when I saw him last month. But he’s still not expanding the zone very often. He’s going after pitches he can drive, and that’s why he’s hitting .300.
Beltre may never walk a bunch, but he will improve. The other parts of his game are developing, and the discipline will go along with that––in fact, it already has, as I mentioned he’s not expanding his zone very often anymore.
20 years old in the Cal League. It means more than you think it does, and it certainly means you shouldn’t be overanalyzing his stats. I’ve yet to talk to a scout that is worried about him right now.
by JasonCole on Jun 1, 2010 12:22 PM CDT up reply actions 2 recs
Good, I hope they're right.
But just like I wouldn’t be confident if he had a great plate approach but scouts saw something wrong with him, I’m not going to be confident if he has a poor plate approach but scouts like him.
Like I said, we’ll see. He is young and, you’re right, he absolutely could improve.
Agreed.
And “not much of a prospect” was a little over the top. I mostly meant I don’t buy him as the prospect I was told he was by the Kevin Goldsteins and Baseball America’s of the world a couple years ago.
I’m higher on him than I was a few minutes ago, though.
This is great to hear.
On a related note, how do you feel about age relative to league for pitchers as opposed to hitters?

Of course we're looking at BaBIP
It’s FAR from the only thing we look at, but I was adding it to the discussion, along with the 3% walk rate over the last month.
Ceterum censeo, Ron Washington esse delendam
Yup, you don't just throw it out, you look at it in context and as a part of a larger picture.
Just because a lot of things can skew BABIP numbers for minor league players doesn’t mean they can’t be lucky or unlucky.
I still wouldn't bet on him realizing his potential with that horrid plate discipline...
But now, I can at least honestly say I really like Engel Beltre. Heh.
