Matt Treanor as Salty's platoon guy?

Jesus, what a terrible idea.

Matt Treanor: .265 career wOBA against lefties.

Unfortunately Evan’s probably right, they’ll probably keep Treanor and his suck around instead of Max when Salty comes back, but hopefully it won’t be as Salty’s platoon partner.

They may just ride Treanor all year

and leave Salty in the minors. It’s not like Salty is significantly better than Treanor.

I disagree

On the grounds that if Salty isn’t better than Matt Treanor, we should probably just drop him from the 40 man now.

That's always a stupid argument

most teams have emergency catchers on the 40s in the minors.

You get the point.

If you don’t think Salty is any better than a career backup catcher and replacement scrub, there’s no use even bothering with him at this point.

Sure you do

a cheap replacement and backup isn’t nothing. He isn’t going to cost much of anything. He can be next year’s Treanor.

I'm not sure

a team exists that will trade you more value than a cheap backup catcher for him anyway.

True

but he can work on his game in AAA, and get used to riding in buses, and have his undeserved entitlement kicked away from him.

That's my hope..

That we somehow survive this season with either our current catchers, or pick up a rental at the deadline, and give Salty a year away from the big time.

Rank speculation,

but I’m wondering if his recent slump is partly related to pouting about not being called back up as soon as he thought the throwing problems were solved. It seems like there is a cooling off period after guys get sent down, where they first tear it up followed by a trough. Probably just small samples and confirmation bias on my part, but I have seen similar things in the work world — where someone gets reassigned to a less complex or interesting case and starts to fester because they think they are being ill-used.

by other_shoe on Jun 10, 2010 11:21 AM CDT up reply actions

I think that is always a possibility.

I’m with Cahill, let him sit in AAA all year, I have no problem with the current catching situation. It could be better, sure, but they’ve imporved over the last few weeks.

Now, next month I could change my tune, it is my right as a kneejerking Rangers fan.

On a related topic

I was looking at the splits for some of the OKC players and noticed that almost all of them had smaller numbers of at bats against LHP than I would have expected — in the 20s for Salty and CD, both of whom perform badly against lefties. I guess I hadn’t fully realized the disparity between the majors where it seems like about a quarter of at bats come against LHP and the advanced minors where based on my cursory review it looks like about an eighth.

Two questions/issues: Is this because left handedness is so valuable that clubs are more likely to bring up those pitchers as soon as plausible? And, second, won’t left handed hitters take longer to adapt to truly quality LHP if they don’t see a lot of it until the majors, and if so, it seems like you just have to wait and see with a player Smoak and hope (is not a plan, so I hear) he sorts it out.

by other_shoe on Jun 10, 2010 12:03 PM CDT up reply actions

I think it's yes to all of your questions.

but that’s just me.

Agreed on all yesses.

Smoak’s issue is compounded because he’s so good batting LH, and the other options are so bad, that he’s going to have to learn to hit lefties at the MLB level.

I think it’s pretty important that the Rangers continue to play him (as they have). It might take a while.

Garko

304 / 407 / 507 at OKC.

He sure stunk during his brief stay with the Rangers, but he only got 33 abs. I still think he could be useful this year.

It may be that the recent slump

has to do to him not being a very good hitter. He certainly hasn’t looked all that great in the majors. He’s OK, but nothing special, versus righties, and sucks versus lefties.

I don't think the two are mutually exclusive

or, more precisely, if you are not particularly good that can be exacerbated by bad attitude and work habits. I’d certainly keep Salty in AAA for the rest of the year to see if he can get his act together.

by other_shoe on Jun 10, 2010 12:27 PM CDT up reply actions

I think there is a very good chance

he is just what he looks like, I.E., a backup catcher, and not what we hoped he was when we traded for him, i.e., a catcher who hit like a 1B.

Arias, ugh
it’s still to be determined if he could play the outfield or the left side of the infield after several years of arm problems.

Still to be determined? Is it not possible for him to throw from SS deep in the hole in pregame warmups or spring training to see how his arm is? Is it not effin’ possible for the team to evaluate Arias except through 2 or 3 at bats a week in actual game time, spread out over several years wasting a bench spot that could go to a play whose skills they don’t have to “determine”?

I hate that we have both Blanco and Arias on the 25...

but I’m starting to wonder if their concern for Kinsler’s health isn’t legit.

It would be a helluva lot better if we had one guy to fille both Blanco’s and Arias’ roles, and I hope that this is a priority over the next 2 months.

Kinsler

That has to be the best reason they keep Arias. But still, why ARIAS? I might prefer another journeyman INF-er. Those Matt Treanor types. That way, we get a better bench now.

Their seeming obssession with losing a replacement-level utility guy who is limited to the right side of the infield boggles the mind. Does Bakersfield/Hickory REALLY need another pitcher so bad that we have to hold out for a trade?

Hmm, So SB Dallas got Sturm huh?

Just stay away from the Rangers, Sports Sturm. You’ve been warned.

OT: for those that worry about the Rangers' record vs. winning teams

Here’s an article from last year addressing the same worry about the 2009 Yankees. Even WS and playoff teams general don’t do all that well against winning teams.

by t ball on Jun 10, 2010 2:50 PM CDT reply actions

Brilliant!
Five of the nine champions this decade posted losing regular-season records against opponents that were .500 or better, including the 2008 Phillies (43-46).

Conversely, teams that excel against tough opponents tend to flop in the postseason. Not since the 1995 Braves has the team with the best record against .500-or-better competition won the World Series that same season. The Los Angeles Angels keep demonstrating this: They dominated such opponents in 2007 (.594) and 2008 (.605), yet lost in the first round both years.

Will this stop the wailing and gnashing of teeth?

I'm not sure it will help..

Right now, I think most of the angst about our record in these games is about feeling inferior to the top teams. It ets couched in talk like “if we make the playoffs”, but I think it’s more about just wanting to hold out own with the better teams.

Good ammunition though once we get over our complex.

who could give a shit about how well we do IF we make the playoffs, as long as we make the playoffs…..

Oh my god! What can it be? We're all doomed! Who's flying this thing?

Am I being too simplistic?

It stands to reason that’s how teams get over .500, because they, well, beat teams.

There was some discussion last week here about how horrible it was

that the Rangers had a good record against losing teams but were only middling against good teams. That’s the way most good teams are.

one and one and one is three

by t ball on Jun 10, 2010 4:34 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, I mean it makes sense that the Rangers or any team for that matter,

would have a worse record against winning teams, because they’re winning teams.

I feel like I’m typing an Abbott & Costello bit.

i.e. If the Rangers or others were beating them on a consistent basis, they wouldn’t have winning records. It’s kinda like if you beat a team 10 out of 11 times, and they ended up 2 games under .500, you wouldn’t get credit for 10 wins v. an above .500 team. But you’re the reason they aren’t above .500.

Yeah, it's kind of a pointless stat

like a team’s record with and without a certain player.

Max caught last time around, right? Why not let him do it catch Hunter again since Hunter pitched so well and both were on the same page. Max is also better against LHP.

was in the Lexus level last night

on the 1st base side and a foul ball came within 5 people of me and hit on the 4th row and was caught on our row which was row 3. Just about as close as I have ever been to catching a foul ball.

kinda liked the 40 year old babe in shorts that kept coming by to take our food order. The spousal unit said on the walk out of the stadium, that she liked the fact she did not have to get up to go get me something to eat.

In reality, there were 120,946 foul balls and home runs during the 2005 season and 74,915,268 fans in attendance that same year, which ends up being about 1 in every 619 fans end up with a ball. This is probably better than the actual odds since not all foul balls are hit into the stands.
