New World Cup Thread

The old thread was up to 650 posts, figure a new one was due.  BTW, we all know you hate soccer and we all hate the Vuvuzelas.  So, check those two topics off your lists.  And no chat speak.  And please people, more emo - an unburdened heart is a happy heart.  Just ask John Terry.

The EPL released next season's fixtures.  My take on Manchester City's new sked ...

Start off in August @Spurs and vs Liverpool at home – interesting start to the season.

Finish season with some bad and some good –
bad – in each month of Jan-Feb-Mar-Apr we play a top-4 team away – ouch
good – finish with Spurs, @Blackburn, West Ham, @Everton, Stoke, @Notlob – That’s a pretty cushy finishing 6 games. I like that. My nerves should like that. Hard to fathom that there are 2 transfer windows to complete before those last 6 games arrive.

What’s the first impression you have of your team’s new fixtures?

On Spain’s loss to Switzerland …

Spain and Brazil were meant to be on greased rails to the finale in Johannesburg on 11 July but now Del Bosque’s side are haunted by the knowledge that no team have lost their first game and gone on to lift the World Cup. That record begs to be broken. It defies reason that a first-game defeat should always point the way to oblivion. Yet the chaos of Spain’s attacking play late on in Durban showed none of the self-assurance that ought to come with such a long successful run.

And here’s an interesting little piece with some early WC shooting/passing stats …

Figures show that, so far, only 33.44% of shots have been on target. That is down by almost 10% in comparison with the Premier League and Champions League last season, and also the World Cup in 2006. While this may be partly attributable to the small sample size, the fact the difference is so pronounced suggests that it is more than a statistical anomaly. Only four sides – Italy, Japan, Slovenia and Germany – have hit the target with more than half of their shots.

by shroomer on Jun 17, 2010 5:54 AM CDT reply actions

re: that second stat there.

I wonder how much of that is influenced by the fact that we’re still in the phase of the WC where the truly horrible teams are playing.

You’d think the later rounds (where it’s only good teams) would lift those overall numbers.

Jesus South Africa is fucking horrible.

“Look at me, I got the ball past center, I’m gonna take a shot at goal from like 120 feet out!!! Terrible soccer + Vuvuzelas = We’re gonna win for sure, you guys!!!”

FUCK SOUTH AFRICA.

I don't hate soccer

I just don’t enjoy watching it. I did watch the entire US/England game and pretty big chunks of other games in the past week while I’m getting ready for work in the morning. It just doesn’t hold my attention.

I do have 3 rule change suggestions though.

1 – Stop the clock after goals. I actually like the running clock but it seems like the time wasted after a goal could be avoided.
B – institute an over and back rule like they have in basketball. It doesn’t necessarily have to be midfield but nothing beats me down more than watching a team kick the ball back toward their own end and often all the way back to thier keeper.
3 – More officials.

by LoneStarBallUser on Jun 17, 2010 6:24 AM CDT reply actions

The Europa League

actually experimented last season with having an official stand near the goal post and look for calls in the penaly box. Sorta like a basketball ref standing under the backboard watching the paint.

Extra time is added on for stuff like injuries and goal celebrations.

by shroomer on Jun 17, 2010 7:29 AM CDT up reply actions

Heres my theory on why most Americans hate soccer

We all have ADD

Seriously if you think about it its the lack of commercials that kills peoples interest in soccer. Each half is 45-48 minutes long and there is no change to that. In that time frame generally 2-3 innings of baseball is played, 1 period of hockey is played, and just over a quarter of football is played.

But each of those sports have commercial breaks where you only have to focus for 5-10 minutes at a time before you can take a break knowing you won’t miss anything.

If you can watch it and pay attention to the ebbs and flow its actually pretty fun to watch. Sure when teams are just kicking the ball across from D to D back and forth across the midline it gets boring but corner kicks and free kicks are some damn interesting plays. Counterattacks create drama at times.

I don’t watch soccer except for the World Cup but I am glued to the tv whenever I do sit down to watch a WC match.

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

by bigsteve on Jun 17, 2010 7:29 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm sure that's part of it

But that’s probably more of a trained ADD than a real one. In my opinion, the lack of commercial breaks is what makes it so great. It’s a 90+ minute match; you know it will take 2 hours real time.

I think another part of it is that it takes a while to learn the nuances of it. I’m sure football seems boring to those who don’t understand it because there aren’t a ton of ‘big’ plays. Football is a little bit better though in that you have the whole set number of downs thing.

The best analogy to American sports is probably baseball though. It’s a ‘talking sport’ for a reason…most people at the game can’t see the crux of what makes the game tick: pitcher vs batter. You end up just following when something happens, be it K, BB, or HR. Even watching on TV, it takes a while to understand enough to make it enjoyable.

Not sure

I’ve been hearing Roy Hodgson, the current Fulham manager, linked very strongly. Not a bad manager, but he seems like a step down from Benitez. Kenny Dalglish, Sven-Goran Eriksson, and Manuel Pellegrini are the others I’ve heard mentioned. Dalglish would placate a lot of fans, but hiring him smacks of Newcastle bringing back Keegan a couple years back. I’ve never been all that impressed with Sven. Don’t know much about Pellegrini, but he’s managed in La Liga for 6 seasons, and has Champions League experience.

If I had anyone to choose from, I’d probably hire Hiddink, but he’s more of a national team manager now, and has said he plans to honor his commitment to manage Turkey.

It will be a tough assignment for whomever gets the job. I think their best hope is that Torres and Glen Johnson go completely nuts at the Copa so they can sell them off and reinvest the funds. So far Johnson has looked fantastic and Torres has made Emile Heskey look like Eusebio.

Been lurking around some of the LFC fan forums tonight, and there’s a strong rumor floating out there that Pellegrini is close to being hired as our next manager.

Nothing concrete yet, but he has met with Dalglish, who’s heading up the job search, so his name’s definitely in the ring.

Bit of a tough final five games with Chelsea, Man U and Man City, but no month with more than one CL team. We’ll need 6 points from the first two matches at Blackburn and v Wolves.

by shroomer on Jun 17, 2010 10:25 AM CDT up reply actions

yup

our problem last year wasn’t against the top teams. we need to beat the bottom feeders instead of getting draws/losses like we did this past season. The ending is tough no doubt, but with a fully healthy team, I don’t see how we can’t challenge again like we did the past couple of years and maybe with a bit of luck, break into the top 4. Last year had to be Moyes best coaching job in keeping this team together. Hopefully, with a full squad and maybe one addition along the midfield (possibly Donovon?), this team will be fine.
Also, for the EPL followers, watch out for Victor Anichibe (spelling might not be right). He’s been injured the last couple of years, but when he played late last season, he seemed like a changed striker. If Moyes can get him into the lineup alongside someone like Saha or Yakubu, Anichibe will produce big time.

That

and guys like James Vaughn (who should finally be able to prove the talent he’s always had) and Beckford should make this a somewhat talented striker group.
And Donovan’s kind of a wild card in this thing. It seemed as if this was really a place that he fitted in well. Hopefully, he comes back….

Incidentally, one of the things I did that helped me learn the league’s players best was do an EPL fantasty league. Maybe we can get one going here this fall.

JD: Eddie Guardado.

by GhettoBear04 on Jun 17, 2010 3:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Good call on beating the teams below us

We have to not lose focus against the bottom feeders like we did last season. The stretch in January and February when we beat Chelsea and United was an example of how good this team can be if they ever stay consistent and healthy for an entire season. The good news is I think we compare pretty favorably with the other teams fighting for fourth as long as Arteta, Fellaini, and Jagielka can stay reasonably fit and productive for the whole season. We might not make top four, but I see us giving it a good run at least.
Anichebe, I think, has had his chances and has proven himself to be a squad player at best. I love Vaughan, but at this point I just don’t think you can expect him to stay healthy for any significant length of time. Beckford is interesting though, and I have a lot of faith in Moyes’s ability to pluck talent from the lower leagues.

by seanathan on Jun 17, 2010 3:45 PM CDT up reply actions

but the thing I like about the trio of strikers is that they are all still relatively young and hopefully will be able to put it together at some time.

Yeah, I’m not committed to the Cameroon thing, but I don’t want to overreact to one game.

It’s hard to quantify/explain how Essien helps because he seems to have the magical ability to just be in the right place at the right time, but I’m thinking Ghana can overcome the loss of Essien better than some of the other teams could overcome the loss of their best player. They don’t have the skill level as a team as some of the better European and South American teams, but they’re still a relatively solid team.

I do think

that CIV is a good team. The thing with them is that I think people see one of the game’s best strikers on their team, Drogba, and instantly assume that they’re the best African team and as a likely pick to come out of that group. That display against Portugal was awesome to say the least, but I think that also has to do with the magic of soccer: on any given day, almost anyone can keep up for 90 minutes with alot of teams. But nonetheless, Ivory Coast have a good team, and it should be interesting to see whether they can come out of that group

Damn Damn Damn

Was watching at a pub for a ‘late lunch’. I was hoping for a France win, but would have been fine with a draw. I don’t like France much, but I hate Mexico unlike any other team (except maybe the Yankees).

Seems like France can do a decent job with possession, but any time they started to put together a scoring chance their play went straight into the toilet. Blah.

Incidentally, if you’re doing the late lunch thing like I’ve done a couple times this week, there’s this issue of when to leave. You can eat from 1:30-2:15 and catch a whole half, then bail. But, if it’s 0-0, do you? Also, if a team scores, shouldn’t you just go ahead and leave? 70% of the time in the World Cup, the team that scores first wins. It seems like it’s even higher in this WC (at least so far).

Damnit. 2-0.

That's the weird thing

Most of our athletes would be monsters on the soccer field. We’d actually have too many because most teams really don’t throw out more than four 6’4"+ guys at once (GK, 2 central defenders, and a target forward).

I think you’d look at running backs like Chris Johnson for the second forward and then point guards, middle infielders and the short slot wide receivers for your midfielders.

Then cornerbacks and safeties for the wing defenders.

Actually, if the U.S. beats Algeria, they're probably in

England and Slovenia would have to tie by a score more than 2-2 and the U.S. would have to beat Algeria by only one goal.

Didn't finish that sentence

… for the U.S. not to advance if they beat Algeria.

Basic scenarios (assuming U.S. beats Algeria next week and England beats Algeria later today)
England beats Slovenia: U.S. and England advance
Slovenia beats England: U.S. and Slovenia advance
England ties Slovenia, but U.S. beats Algeria by more than 1 goal: U.S. and one other advances
England ties Slovenia, but U.S. beats Algeria by only one goal: If the tie is 1-1 or 0-0, U.S. advances.

Not that I disagree but all IOC competions are actually organized

by the federations (i.e. FIFA) and thus they are not directly responsible for officiating at the Olympics

True

but if they tell a federation that those aren’t the best officials and then there is an officiating problem then they lose deny-ability. Like I said not directly responsible, but certainly the IOC shares in the blame of officiating issues at the Olympics.

Yes

but say we only won 1-0, and Slovenia and England were to tie, it would come down to tiebreakers. Irish is right…England and Algeria tie today, esp 0-0, we are in 2nd place by goals scored. England would have to beat Slovenia next week to have a chance to get in. In that case, both Slovenia and Alegria would have a loss, and both England and the US would have a win and two ties, putting us in first most likely and through to the round of 16.

Torres is more of a playmaker/quarterback-type who can distribute the ball all around the field with good vision and accurate passes. Clark is a destroyer, period. The knock on Gringo Torres is that he’s tiny (I’ve heard him described as looking like a bunch of garden hoses tied together). He also doesn’t have experience in huge matches at the international level. I think he was overwhelmed today by the Slovenians aggression and size in the midfield. The game was just moving too fast for him today. I think Clark starts against Algeria. Or, perhaps, Edu, who settled nicely into the game after a shaky first couple of minutes. He also scored the winning g…wait what DAMMIT!!!

Something I just remembered

Golden goal is no longer a part of World Cup soccer. That makes me sad.

What would you people rather see? Golden goal or extra time and shootout if necessary?

by DFWAg on Jun 18, 2010 4:19 PM CDT reply actions

When I was a kid...

I loved PKs. They just seemed so tense and interesting. Now though, it seems pretty ridiculous that so many of these matches are won on a penalties. I mean, Italy won the World Cup on PKs. That’s just seems so anti-climatic.

Slovenian defender Marko Suler was adamant the referee had made the correct decision to disallow Edu’s goal and accused the Americans of roughhouse tactics.

by GhettoBear04 on Jun 21, 2010 11:04 PM CDT up reply actions

I haven't seen that many games this year, so you can obviously take this for what it's worth

But there has definitely been a disparity between how much I’ve seen latin american teams dive and fake injuries (only to miraculously hop up and run back on the pitch as soon as they are carted off) and how much I’ve seen African and Euro countries do the same. I have only seen one match involving an Asian team and they were to depressed by being beaten 7-0 to try and dive so I have no conclusions to draw on them.

All teams take dives, but the ridiculous nature of some of the stuff I’ve seen is embarrassing. I wouldn’t have a problem with some of those players getting yellow cards for some of it. It’s absurd seeing a guy fall to the ground, screaming and holding his knee after having almost been touched.

by DFWAg on Jun 22, 2010 8:22 AM CDT up reply actions

i just now peeked at the bracket

and winning the group would be HUGE for the US. Supposing Germany wins group D, then we’re talking playing Ghana/Serbia/Australia. but should we make it past that, the quarterfinal match would be against any of the 7 mediocre (not top contending) teams from groups A/B. The best team in those groups not named Argentina would be Mexico. If the US-England game was intense, think about US-Mexico on July 2 for the chance at the semi’s
