hm, with a BABIP of .524 for the month
and season-low LD rate, you’d think you could expect some regression. The walks are encouraging though.

Yep...
I was just going to say the LD rate is a little concerning with those June #’s.
But the K rate is down and the BB rate is up, so that’s hopefully a good sign.

Yeah
So we can all bitch about it when they become good for another team. Beavan needs to stay here, he is going to be good.
Well, I can see the argument
That Beavan is the type of pitcher bad GMs tend to overvalue.
But, yeah, unless he gets us something nice, I say Pasadena.

I'm not saying Beaven is bad
I’m hoping he can be overvalued, though.
His draft hype, ERA, and age:league ratio makes him look way better than he is.

I know Rojas is starting tonight, and I imagine Nick McBride will be in the rotation. Probably Mendoza as well.
Mendoza's a reliever all the way
Rotation is Rojas, McBride, Miguel De Los Santos, Zach Osborne, and then not sure.
That's really cool that De Los Santos got sent down to start.

Andres Perez-Lobo is ranked 148th in the country by Perfect Game. Perez-Lobo has played with the Texas Rangers Scout Team in Jupiter and with the Florida Diamond club, as well as participating in the Miami All-Star Game.
“Lobo is the true meaning of power arm,” said Allen. “He throws anywhere from 88-93 and is a strike thrower. Very competitive and tough-minded young man, that has Friday night type stuff.”

Matt Purke
Has a nice curve and sometimes nice change to go with a few 92 FBs. His curveball pretty much made some LH hitter dive out of the box. He also seems very much in control on the mound, as he worked around some bad fielding and let up only 1 UER in the 1st against FSU.
It’s the first time I’ve watched him. He seems impressive to me.

TCU is crushing it right now.
Pro baseball has always been a dream, so this is pretty freakin’ cool out here. -- Tim Steggall, undrafted Rangers minor leaguer.
BTW, in regards to his curveball.
Purke’s fastball was awfully good, sitting at 91-93 and touching 94. He used it to put away four of his strikeout victims, and he used his stellar 82-84 changeup to get an early strikeout. But the other two punchouts came on his 77-80 power curveball—and that’s a significant development.
Pro baseball has always been a dream, so this is pretty freakin’ cool out here. -- Tim Steggall, undrafted Rangers minor leaguer.
Interesting Purke story
After the Rangers selected him last summer, Purke scouted ballparks in the Rangers’ minor league system. Frisco, Texas. Oklahoma City. Soon he’d be pitching there. As a backup plan, he picked TCU.
In fact, that August day, Purke attended TCU freshman orientation. But he hadn’t even packed for the semester. That’s how certain he was that he’d sign.
As the 14th overall pick, Major League Baseball recommended that his signing bonus be $1.6 million. But Purke didn’t see himself as the 14th pick. Neither did the Rangers.
Ryan has reportedly said the club originally intended to sign Purke for about $6 million. But the Rangers were in financial turmoil and, by July, MLB was overseeing the organization’s finances. The league capped the Rangers’ offer at $4 million.
Ryan spent the evening of Aug. 17 attempting to get Commissioner Bud Selig to give the Rangers more flexibility.
Even in the last hour before the deadline, the Purke family thought the Rangers would meet them at the requested number.
When the clock hit 11 p.m., Purke was crushed.
Mom and Dad drove to Fort Worth every weekend in the fall. Each time, they passed by the Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.
"I couldn’t drive through there without crying," Margaret said.
The Purkes couldn’t go to the grocery store without hearing hecklers. People called them greedy. Stupid. How could they pass up $4 million?
"We’ve had a lot of people say, ‘Well, we would’ve signed for a lot less,’ " Lawrence Purke said. "I ask you, if you own a home, would you sell that home for a third less than what it’s worth? You wouldn’t."
Bad response, there, dad.
Pro baseball has always been a dream, so this is pretty freakin’ cool out here. -- Tim Steggall, undrafted Rangers minor leaguer.
I'm not sure which is worse
Dad’s comment or the “[w]hen the clock hit 11 p.m., Purke was crushed” line. It should be reworded like this:
When the clock hit 11 p.m., Purke was crushed that the Rangers would only offer to pay him $4 million instead of $7 million.
Let’s put this into context. It’s not like the Rangers refused to make a legitimate offer or they took away his puppy or something.

Makes it sound like Matt was down to sign

exactly, if we were assigning blame for this, it would be
99% – Tom Hicks
1% – Bud Selig
0% – Purke and his family
The Rangers knew what it would take to sign him before they even drafted him. You can’t draft someone on the premise that you’ll be able to get close to that figure and then low-ball him, whether it was what you intended or not.
Greatest Inventions Ever? 1. TiVO, 2. Boobs, 3. Baseball

But most prospects and their families talk a bigger game than they’re prepared to back up. Look at Matzek… he’s a better prospect than Purke, was said to be seeking a record-breaking bonus but settled for a pretty reasonable sum.

So, for those of you watching, Purke looks like about, what, a hi-A pitcher right now?
He uses four pitches, and has control but not command of his fastball. Control of his other pitches will wax and wane.
He’s pretty good at bouncing that slider in K counts, but I doubt upper-level minor leaguers would fall for it.
His curveball and change-up appear to be legit freeze or swing-and-miss pitches.
He’s overthrowing, now that he’s into the 7th with about 100 pitches, but until then he repeated his motion well. He needs to work on his motion a bit, but he is consistent with it.

Beltre makes Goldstein's Monday Ten Pack
Engel Beltre, OF, Rangers (High-A Bakersfield)
As a 19-year-old, Beltre was overmatched by California League pitching last year, which brought even more attention to some of the non-baseball issues in his game, as he plays with an edge that the optimist would describe as intense, but others might use more colorful language. He gained some national attention this year for starting a brawl with a game-winning home-run trot that included a snail’s pace and taunting his opponent, but for the first time since 2008, his play is earning attention as well. He’s a true five-tool talent who is finally coming into his own, batting .444 (24-for-54) in his last 14 games and .326/.374/.464 overall, and at 20, he’s still young for level, despite the repeat performance.

2 max
Every organization is represented, with no more than two players from any organization, and 25 players per team, divided into U.S. and World teams based on place of birth. (Players born in Puerto Rico are part of the “World” team despite being U.S. citizens by birth, because that territory has its own national baseball federation and national team).

That's just stupid
I sort of understand the idea behind each team having a rep in the MLB All-Star Game, because you’re wanting fans of all teams to watch, so it’s good that they all have someone to root for.
But let’s be honest, the Futures Game is mostly going to be watched by prospectophiles and people interested in the future of the game. It makes no sense to have these roster restrictions because you’ll have BA Top 100 guys from loaded systems left off the roster and then some mediocre three-star prospect from a terrible system making the team instead.
