Check this.

Before today, Baltimore’s 2nd-order record was just 1.3 wins better than Houston and just 2.8 wins better than Pittsburgh’s.

But their third order record (adjusted for strength of opponents) is four wins better than their second order. Which is a lot.

They’re bad, but their schedule is killing them about as much as can happen.

Just a dumbass, backwoods Wal-Mart billionaire. At least the Rangers situation can be resolved.

by Black Francis on Jun 18, 2010 10:51 PM CDT up reply actions

Rumors of his terribleness have been greatly exaggerated

He’s mediocre, the real problem is an owner who thinks championships have to be bought on the free agent market, then only ponies up half the money necessary to do it while actively sabotaging the farm system.

by OremLK on Jun 18, 2010 10:53 PM CDT up reply actions

To be fair

McLane has backed off on his hatred of all prospects the past few years, he’s spending an average amount on the draft and investing in international prospects now.

It would go a lot quicker if he would stop valuing his stars more than his farm system though.

by OremLK on Jun 18, 2010 10:59 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm still somewhat sickened by

not offering arb after 06 to Pettitte when he was clearly going back to New York, then that terrible 07 draft.

Mildly justifiable.

Only mildly.

At the time, Berkman was OPS’ing a million, he looked ready to play pretty well till end of 2011.

At the time, the Stros had JR Towles and Humberto Quintero. Wait, they still have them.

Wade really needs to do well with trading Roy at the minimum, and hope someone offers him good value for Pence, Bourn and Berkman. Wandy is probably nothing right now. Perhaps Myers?

I think the logic behind it

came back to the “win-now” mode which McLane kept employing.

Berkman at the time looked like he’d be around til 2011 producing a 900 OPS.

Castro was supposed to be a C who got to the bigs quickly, and also be solid enough to stay there for the next decade.

Remember to retire Fin's number, Mark.

by jonthefon on Jun 18, 2010 11:11 PM CDT up reply actions

Also, he's younger than Smoak

So it kind of covers all the bases that way. I still would’ve preferred Smoak but I’m not gonna riot over Castro.

by OremLK on Jun 18, 2010 11:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Myers and Oswalt for sure

Berkman has negative value with his contract and the way he’s hitting so far, Pence and Bourn have a lot of team control left so it’s not real urgent to trade them.

4. Smoak ripping a double off a lefty to score two more

Anyway that was a really good game.

Feldman is looking a lot better with some strikeouts and groundball outs. Smoak is turning into a real badass. Borbon has officially snapped out of it now that he’s started to take a walk now and then. Things are looking pretty good. Pretty, pretty, pretty good.

by Black Francis on Jun 18, 2010 10:40 PM CDT reply actions

No, we discussed it early in the game.

Smoak has “proved” that he’s in over his head and doesn’t belong in the Majors.

Also, the Rangers single biggest weakness is the curveball. Even though pfx classifications would suggest they are merely mediocre and, just on pitch types, have many bigger weaknesses.

by philkid3 on Jun 18, 2010 10:45 PM CDT up reply actions

I can only imagine who would think Smoak is in over his head.

He won't be Teixeira

but he could be Morneau, both because of the slightly lower career OPS+ than Teixeira (127 vs. 134) and the lefty -righty splits issue.

would not balk at Davis/Holland. If we could secure new ownership and come to terms with a contract for 11 and 12 then something like Perez/Davis/Beavan/Murphy

Can't shake the feeling that Lee

is the very sort that you stockpile minor league talent for in the first place- would be every bit as excited about Lee coming here as Halladay in the 09 scenario. Even moreso with the lineup and legit chance we have to rumble into playoffs this year.

by texasdoc on Jun 18, 2010 11:18 PM CDT up reply actions

You don't stockpile talent for rent-a-players.

That’s not to say you don’t go after rent-a-players if the terms are right, but that’s not why you stockpile them.

by philkid3 on Jun 18, 2010 11:21 PM CDT up reply actions

Flags fly eternal

I’m not agreeable to renting just any player. My argument is that Lee- and not Oswalt- is the type that is worth cashing your chips in and letting it ride on. Do you think Milwaukee is pining for Laporta about now? They had a legit chance after that trade- it made them division champs and gave them a legit title chance.

by texasdoc on Jun 18, 2010 11:25 PM CDT up reply actions

You don't stockpile players for any rent-a-players.

It’s a way to use them, but it’s not the reason you stockpile them. No amount of overused sayings will change that.

And that trade is an excellent reason for why I wouldn’t trade Perez for him: it didn’t work out for the Brewers, and if LaPorta reaches his ceiling, it would kill them. And I would take Perez over what I thought LaPorta was, anyway.

Further, the Brewers’ window was 2008. They had little future, they had to win right then. The Rangers don’t. I also don’t think they need a Cliff Lee to contend. I’m not saying I’d mind a trade for him, but it is absolutely not the same situation as Milwaukee and you are greatly undervaluing prospects if you think you just hand over whatever’s asked for, like, 3-4 marginal wins at best.

Also, the Brewers didn’t win the division.

by philkid3 on Jun 18, 2010 11:43 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree, to a point

the only reason I hesitate is that anything can happen in baseball. Your window of contention could go awry in so many ways. Look at Colorado. A couple of years ago everyone assumed they’d were just on the upswing. They still are, sort of, but even with Ubaldo and Tulo and so much talent they are struggling to compete and the last couple years have been a roller coaster. Detroit in 2006, same thing. Everyone though, oh, they have so much pitching, they’re going to the playoffs a few times.

I am offering Seattle every kind of deal imaginable that doesn’t include the top 4. I probably balk at including any but Scheppers, whose injury risk probably cancels out the closer to the majors advantage he has over Perez. But I can completely see why it’s so tempting to go for it.

My head says no to that type of deal, but every other part of me is leaning anyway.

I’m not laughing at you or saying you’re way off base for thinking that either.

I really don't bother comparing eras that far apart

there is just no comparison. If Babe Ruth was born in, say, 1970, someone spots that talent, puts him on a weight training regimen and diet and he’s a freakin’ monster. If Bonds is born in 1890, he plays in the Negro leagues, never gets steroids, etc. etc. etc.

Bonds was great, Ruth was great, impossible to truly compare them.

Yes way.

I do have Ruth, but there is absolutely 100% an argument there. And a strong one.

Hell, I think the WAR difference between them in Rally’s database is less than a win; Bonds passes that if he’s not blackballed in ’08.

And that considers their performance relative to their era, but not the league quality, which mostly trends upwards.

I think of WAR as the beginning of the argument, and you work deeper from there. It fleshes out a very quick grouping to start with and a good idea of a players’ career.

no team is giving up 5star prospects for a couple months of any player.

I'd much prefer Haren, he's under control and we could probably

give up not the best to get him.

Yup.

My hair raises for Haren.

The D'Backs are in rebuilding mode.

So they would want mostly quantity, not top talent, but we might have to part with a few. Not as much top tier guys as we would for Lee.

I liked the above-suggested Beavan + Davis + 1 (or possibly two) second tier RP prospects

For Haren?

That’s an embarrassing offer.

Yeah, you've gotta include at least one higher-tier guy in front of those names to make it work.

I think we should concentrate on acquiring Oswalt.

The price should be lower because he said he’s done after 2011 + do the ’Stros really wanna pay Oswalt $ 20+ million over the next 1.5 years when their team is going to suck with or without him?

He may also reconsider retirement if he comes to a team that has a real shot at winning.

Davis and something other than The Big 4 should get it done.

Only thing is, Oswalt probably offers the least impact of all the "ace" starters on the market

Especially considering his salary and potential pricetag.

That's just wrong, imo.

Because they’re in rebuilding mode they’d want quantity and not top talent?

Huh?

That makes no sense.

It makes, like, anti-sense.
