The Need For Expanded Replay? Ex-Ranger Galarraga loses perfect game....

on a blown call by an umpire with 2 outs in the 9th.

ESPN Link to Game (with Video)

SBNation Recap

Full 9th Inning Video

So, this leads to the question: Do you think Replay Should be expanded?

And if so, in what way?

Feel free to give a lengthier answer in the comments....

The umpire "feels bad" about it, but I mean seriously, if you have a doubt (and the ump double-clutched on the call), why don't you ask for help? Especially in that situation?

In addition, this after Austin Jackson made a difficult catch in the same inning to preserve the perfect game.... and with the Tigers' players and manager arguing with the ump....

BTW, what's up with all the perfect games going on this season?

Yeah, it sucks

if I were the scorekeeper, I’d have given Cabrera an error there to at least preserve the no-hitter. He double pumped/hesitated after all

Utterly brutal.

That’s going to follow Joyce around the rest of his career.

Just a perfect storm… No less than Jim Leyland getting in his face after the final out.

Brutal brutal brutal.

Go Strangers.

That was awful.

I really hope that Selig fixes this. Jeff’s front-page story on this was really good.

Man, how much class does it take for Galarraga to smile at him after that call, too? Awful.

I voted no

Because I’d like to see computer chips inserted into balls, bases or wherever they can be incorporated into helping officiate of the game. I’m no expert but I’m sure it can be done.

I’d like to see computer chips shoved up the umps’ asses that fry their fucking brains with 10000 volts every time they blow a fucking call that badly.

I voted no

mostly because I misread the question – I don’t think this one play matters enough to rationalize replay on its own.

But yeah, all foul balls should be reviewable, things like that Hamilton homer earlier this year should be reviewable even if the ump is stubborn, and I guess force outs would make sense.

Go Rice Owls!

On a first base call

Because he can’t look at two places at once the umpire watches the base and listens for the ball to hit the glove.
Its a method which is open for error and in this case the ball didn’t hit cleanly into the glove where it can be heard. Gallaraga snowconed it.
It’s how they did it 100 years ago but we now have the technology so why not change it?

but

it might add another 3 minutes onto a 3hr game

we cant do that

baseball it about tradition and human mistakes

A couple of questions regarding the Galarraga situation....

1) Did anyone else think that Jason Donald thought he was either 1) out AT first or 2) out at FIRST? I mean how many players grimace when they’ve just beat out a hit? Also, though it might have been unprecedented, if you were in that situation, do you tell the umpire that you think he made the wrong call?

2) Did anyone else feel that Leyland should have at least 1) tried to get the ump to huddle with the other umps, or 2) argued enough to be thrown out?

3) Is that REALLY the best position for the ump to be “seeing” whether a player is out or not? I mean wouldn’t it be better for the ump to go into foul territory and get the angle similar to what we saw?

There's no difference from out AT first or out at FIRST

But yes..he thought he was OUT at first. heh. That is acknowledged by everyone, including himself. No, you don’t tell the ump anything there since it would not change anything..and you’re looking out for your own team anyways.

No..Joyce had a perfect view of the play and that’s what he told Leyland..there’s no arguement or huddle to be had when the umpire is 100% certain he was correct.

Yes..he should run and hop off field next to the camera guys.

I was trying to be clever with the question :p....

-Fair enough.

-It’s the last out of the ninth inning of the end of an almost perfect game. If I were Leyland, I’d put that in his head, and basically ask, well, could you live with yourself, if you were wrong? And perhaps hint to him that he might want to consult the other umps.

-Hyperbole + sarcasm doesn’t help. Though, I did mis-write what I wanted to say “get the angle CLOSER to what we saw.” It just seems to me that from the angle the umpire was at, it’s not the easiest job to see when a batter ACTUALLY reaches first base when the runner is running pretty directly at you. This is more of a question for people who’ve ump’ed before, though.

Replay official

Why don’t they have replay officials who, as soon as a controversial call happens, can begin reviewing the play immediately. Similar to what happens in the last 2min of each half in football. This way the umps don’t have to leave the field, and it can just be radioed down to the field that it is being reviewed and the call can be changed if need be.

Replay

Might it be that there never would have been a chance at a perfect game if we had machine’s calling the game?

by bdavison94 on Jun 3, 2010 9:08 AM CDT reply actions

that's absolutely possible

i’m really tired of hearing about this already.
