41-28
I don't think anyone was feeling "win" a couple of innings into this game.
Great job by C.J. battling back after a bad first couple of innings, though.
Great job by the offense of implementing the John Blake "peck away" theory once they got down.
Great job by Josh Hamilton of getting 5 hits, including the game winning RBI single in the 10th.
Great job by Julio Borbon of getting on base five times.
8 game winning streak now, with 6 against the Pirates and Astros at home this coming week.
3 1/2 games up on the Angels.
Happiness.

Not like I do it without being certain of their opinion
they just aren’t around the comp at the time
So they lose their last game against the Astros?
What kind of fan are you?
Unless im mistaken
that final game will be against Oswalt…so it will be a toughie
Fuck Mike Estabrook
I'm still wishing for that 14 game win streak.
Whether it’s against Oswalt or not, Houston is beatable in any scenario.
We beat the Marlins + Johnson.
We beat the Brewers + Gallardo.
Houston + Oswalt shouldn’t even compare to either of those.
Does Oswalt throw weak, slow pitches with his left hand?
If answer=no, we can beat him.

2008 was about as much as I think I could love a losing year.
That was just such a fun roster. Kinsler was so awesome to watch while he was healthy, and Hamilton’s story, and the home run derby, and the tarp sliding, and Board Game and promise for the future and all sorts of greatness. And the doubles record.

And a double the night before
Which means next time up, he’s down for two homers.

Yeah.
I’m betting he won’t still be around by their second series down this way. I’m really hoping to go to all three games in early July. But my brother, his girlfriend and my grandparents will all be here those days, so ditching them for three baseball games is probably not gonna fly.
Maybe I can convince them Profar is worth it.
Yeah, things take on a different tone with that word switch
But, if they were seriously considering assigning him to Hickory to start the year, maybe it could still happen.

Just got back from the game. What a test of nerves for us!
Ceej started out pretty rough and we were pretty rough on the fielding. His curve started to click and we kept chipping away. Most of the Astros fans around us were freaking out when they IBB Guerrero for Hambone. My kids lost interested about the 3rd inning and then consumed every possible piece of junk food they sold.
In the end we were rewarded with the trifeca of
1)Rangers victory
2)getting to the park on Father’s Day
3)Blanco flinging his sweat drenched wristband to my kids
we're from Texas
CJ says "Relax"
What was ratio
of Rangers fans to Astros fans at the end?
It was at least half, or at least the Astros fans were so beaten down they couldn’t make any noise.

We stayed
to the last pitch. It was awesome hearing the crowd cheering for the K at the end and going nuts after the game. Great showing by all the Rangers fans down here in the armpit of Texas. Just walking the concourse before the game, I think at least 1 in 10 were wearing something Rangers related.

After 2 innings.....
I was feeling win, because the Astros are simply horrible. I don’t think I’ve been to three before where the two teams were so clearly going in different directions.
That was really, really fun.
Hopefully we’ll be out of bankruptcy by mid-June and can add that top-of-the-rotation starter. It may be expensive, but flags fly forever.
Yeah, but it's not like getting a TORP guarantees you a flag.
You have to weigh how much more likely it makes the team to win. You don’t simply say it makes things more likely and go do whatever trade it takes.
Of course
But this looks like it’s really coming together.
This weekend may have been Smoak’s coming out party…..15 plate appearances, 7 hits, 1 walk, 2 doubles, 2 home runs, and 8 RBIs. And he simply crushed the ball.
Right now, I would feel pretty good rolling into a playoff series with, say, a top three of Oswalt, Lewis and Wilson.
by Darrell McKown on Jun 20, 2010 6:13 PM CDT up reply actions
I wouldn't feel enough better about it to mortgage the future.
We’re talking probably like a couple marginal wins between now and the end of the season by adding Oswalt, not to mention the insane contract. In the post season it’s a boost, but I’m going to estimate (and I’ll probably actually work on this later) that it’s like a 5-10% boost in odds of winning a series.
It’s nice, I’d like to do it for a reasonable package, but no way to I give up a big chunk of the future for it. Especially for a team whose window of opportunity is just opening.
Preach Brutha.

Oswalt
If you take the contract, I don’t think you have to give up a big chunk of the future for it. I wouldn’t agree to exercise the 2012 option, but I think his salary for 2010 and 2011 is about market for how he’s pitching now.
Also, if you assume this team should have an $80-90 million payroll once the financial house is in order, his contract fits now, and then expires when the guys who are the young core of the team start getting expensive. It fits pretty well.
I don’t know what it would take to get him if you take the contract. The Astros aren’t very smart. I suspect they would value a guy like Beaven who has a nice AA ERA much more than I would, and much more than I suspect Daniels does. Chris Davis is another guy they might have interest in if he’s hitting well in AAA. Berkman is likely gone soon, and Drayton likes a good Texas connection.

wanted him sent down, and it’s hard to blame them given his performance early on.
But this just goes to show you how important it is to be patient with young players. If this team knee-jerked with Borbon and Smoak when they were struggling, because they felt like this team has to win now, it would have been a big mistake.
Now Smoak and Borbon are two of the biggest reasons why this offense is clicking. And now this lineup (especially once Nellie is back) is really fucking deep.

I was one who wanted Judy shipped out because
you simply can’t live with 2 walks in 160 plate appearances from anybody, muchless a player who depends as much on speed as he does. We went two months with him hovering around a .500 OPS.
Judy B is polarizing to me. I said he was one of my big candidates to be better than we thought going into the season (based on the .376 OBP last year) and then he shit the bed fantastic. Now, the resurgence.
I have to believe a big key to Borbon heating up is that he is no longer swinging at pitches out of the zone. He has 5 walks in 60 ab’s this month (.426 average / .463 OBP) and that’s an acceptable rate for him.

Not sure
there isn’t something to it. He does seem to grossly exceed his pythags on a regular basis.
"Look, we're basically on earth to shit and fuck. So unless your job's to help people shit or fuck, it's not that important, so relax."-https://twitter.com/shitmydadsays
2008 was the only one time I'd say grossly.
4 or 5 over in 2006, 2007, 2009? Meh. He’s already 4 over this year, but there’s a long way to go.
For the record, other than in his first year, when he was 4 under, Wash’s teams have been beating their pythags too.
From Neyer...
Those 27 “extra” wins haven’t been spread out evenly over those 11 seasons, though. From 2000 through 2005 the Angels never strayed far from their runs scored and allowed, and overall were actually three wins worse than their theoretical record: +1, -2, -2, -3, +1, +2.
But in 2006, Scioscia’s teams began to consistently outplay their run differentials: +5, +4, +12, +5, +4 (so far in 2010).
I don’t know if this is the best five-year run any manager’s ever had, but I suspect it’s one of the more impressive you’ll find. And as Cameron notes, it’s been almost entirely due to fantastic clutch hitting … clutch hitting which, as you know, is quite a slippery beast if you’re trying to identify an actual ability rather than a fleeting phenomenon. But in the case of the Angels, there’s been nothing fleeting about it.
Mike Olt - 2013 A.L. Rookie of the Year.
He declined to accept the award as to not show up his fellow rookies. Incentives earned from being named ROY were donated to a local charity. He did not report this donation on his tax return.
So is his argument that Scioscia has some remarkable ability to inspire clutch hitting?
I’m sticking with the “shit happens” explanation.
Here's the...
He’s commenting on an article written by Cameron.
Mike Olt - 2013 A.L. Rookie of the Year.
He declined to accept the award as to not show up his fellow rookies. Incentives earned from being named ROY were donated to a local charity. He did not report this donation on his tax return.
Yeah...
And if you do want to shower somebody with laurels for the clutch hitting, the hitting coach seems like a more likely candidate.
I do think Scioscia is probably the best manager in baseball, but I fail to see how the manager is going to inspire clutch hitting.
"Take all that clubhouse [stuff] and all that, throw it out the window. Every writer in the country has been writing about that [nonsense] for years. Chemistry don't mean [anything]." - Jim Leyland
Or the FO for the roster construction,
which is one of the things Neyer tosses out there. But with the amount of turnover in their lineup, I find that one hard to believe.
Especially since it didn’t help them avoid GMJ… :D
Especially since
their team lineup is usually never picked as one of the stronger ones at the beginning of the year. Scioscia’s got something, whether it’s massive luck or skill, I don’t know, but he’s got something.
"Look, we're basically on earth to shit and fuck. So unless your job's to help people shit or fuck, it's not that important, so relax."-https://twitter.com/shitmydadsays
Well,
Neyer’s idea is that they have figured out how to identify truly clutch players, and since nobody else knows how to do that, it would explain why nobody else rates their rosters so highly. Plausible, but I’m still not really satisfied with that explanation.
No thanks
I’d rather have Francona.

4 or 5 isn't grossly?
I’d take that from a manager year in and year out. Try to find other managers who have done it over a half decade stretch.
"Look, we're basically on earth to shit and fuck. So unless your job's to help people shit or fuck, it's not that important, so relax."-https://twitter.com/shitmydadsays
I'd take it too,
but my point was just that 4 or 5 is much easier to get just just from luck than 12. Wash, for instance, is 6 games up over the last two-and-a-half seasons.
So
an average a little over 2.
You do understand standard distributions, right? Having a guy who is 4 or 5 games up is significantly more than twice as impressive as someone up 2.
Also, we often see how Ron depresses Run Scored with his decisions to be bunt happy.
"Look, we're basically on earth to shit and fuck. So unless your job's to help people shit or fuck, it's not that important, so relax."-https://twitter.com/shitmydadsays
Heh, I hadn't looked at the bunt thing that way.
I went with Ron since the consensus here is that he’s a subpar manager, yet the pythag numbers say that after his first year he’s been slightly above average wins-wise. And because he was the first other manager I looked up, since he’s the Rangers manager, and I don’t have time to look up any others.
I definitely wasn’t trying to say that he has been as good/lucky/whatever as Scioscia.
Big shout out

Beyond that. . .
The schedule has helped, but 8 runs is still significantly better than you could assume against even this schedule. The games have been on the road, the Brewers had pitching match-up advantages, the Marlins might be almost as good as the Rangers and the Astros are bad but even a horrible team you don’t assume a sweep on the road.
The Rangers could have won 6 or maybe even 5 of these last 9 games and called it a success. Instead, they won 8.
It is good to be back in town.
Glad to see my coming back didn’t jinx the Rangers. With the way Hamilton is swinging the bat, a Ranger won’t win the AL MVP this year becausehe and Vlad will spilt the vote.

Agreed.
My favorites have changed a bit through the years. I haven’t listened to Frank in a while, but I think it’s still currently “I won’t dance”

Great stuff.
I wore the hell outta that stuff. ‘(Love Is) The Tender Trap’ is up there with Wonder’s ‘You Are the Sunshine of My Life’ as my most listened to song.
'Waiting for a girl and she gets me into fights
Waiting for a girl we get drunk on Friday night'
Yeah, I've got that one
South of the Border, Hey Jealous Lover, Three Coins, Nice and Easy, etc. Greatness. That CD, along with my Tony Bennett double CD greatest hits and a Nat King Cole greatest hits all regulars in my rotation.
Freude schöner Götterfunken, Tochter aus Elysium, Freude!
Instead of dancing
I serenaded my wife with a rendition of Bennett’s Because of You. Much better at singing than dancing.
Freude schöner Götterfunken, Tochter aus Elysium, Freude!
Nice!
I support this as well.
I’m just bored to tears by the 2 people ‘slow dancing’ in a circle to “Amazed” by Lonestar. Everything else about wedding gets planned to death months in advance, why is the first dance an afterthought? Apologies to those I’m sure I’ve offended…

We kind of regret what we did…picked a “cute” song (Ella Fitzgerald’s Love You Madly) that didn’t really mean anything to us.
In retrospect, we should have picked Mazzy Star’s Fade Into You or some other song that actually meant something to us at the time. That may still sound lame to some, but I don’t even think I had heard Love You Madly until we picked it out.
Some people just put too much thought into it and outsmart themselves like we did. We should have just done what we wanted and not cared what people thought.

some one from texas emails in to get them to finally talk about the rangers

Well yeah, I share too much...an email...we talked earlier
Don’t we all wish we could rewind the clock…10, 15. 20, 25 years. Oh, I wish that I could, just to be a better person.
Dad, it is hard to explain how much I look up to you, and how much I love you. Yeah, we had our hard times, but that just makes the good times so much sweeter.
Could you please make it a point to call me once a week, at least? After all, you are my Dad…and every guy needs to talk to his Dad.
Haha, neat things we remember. I remember being in the Nelson Courthouse when you adopted me, and that lawyer kept giving me and Tracy Tic Tacs…I think this is why Mom gives them to us at Christmas, she is a softy like me. But still, one of the most important memories of my life, when I had a Dad, and became a blankname.
I hope this email finds you well.

Rodney

As recently as a couple weeks ago, if the All-Star teams were based on fWAR, Hamilton would have just missed the roster.
Today, he’s 8th in baseball among position players.
I would like to point out I was giving him All-Star votes all along.
Oh, and here's the number that should really put his performance this year in context: 7
That’s how many runs he is behind all of 2008’s total.
