Org Watch: Rangers, Athletics, Angels
Baseball Prospectus' view on the Rangers organization. Well, actually thier bullpen.
The Rangers, potentially destined for the playoffs, could have a really deep bullpen come October—although they're making decisions towards a different end.
...These guys could have the nastiest bullpen in baseball right now—but they don't, due to some decisions down on the farm that seem to be more aimed at the future (if one tries to rationalize them at all) rather than at taking advantage of a golden opportunity in the present.
..."He could dominate in the big leagues right now as a seventh/eighth inning guy," said one pro scout who has seen Scheppers on multiple occasions this year. "I'm not really sure I understand what Texas is doing with him. They're going to be in the playoffs and they have upgrades over guys like Chris Ray and Dustin Nippert ready to go, but instead, they're trying to turn these guys into something they aren't."
Goldstein and this scout seem to have a shortterm view. Beltre is starting tonight simply due to injuries. Unless Ogando implodes, he will be with the team for the remainder of the season.
Scheppers seems to be thier biggest contention. Longterm the Rangers view him as a starter. They also have two SPs on the DL and another relegated to the bullpen. They need some SP depth and Tanner needs minor league experience. Let him start in AAA. . And as Durrett points out, the Rangers can simply bring up Scheppers at any time and put him in the pen.

I say screw it
Let’s call everyone up.
Bring in Scheppers, Marteen, and Phillips
Send down Nippert, Ray, DFA Harrison and trade Frankie.
Our bullpen will be Feliz, Scheppers, Martin Perez, Zach Phillips, Darren Oliver, Alexi Ogando and Omar Beltre (Once Holland comes back from the DL).
The Youth movement is now!
I'm not sure "youth

As I was saying..
Why not trade Oliver, too? If you want “youth”, give me Evan Reed over Oliver

You shouldn't post when drunk dude.

Their concerns seem misplaced
They are developing Scheppers as a starter but if he comes up to Arlington it will be as a reliever. I think the perception that he’s going to be injured again any minute (!!!!!) is a bit panicky. The Rangers have some thorough (and the most recent) data on his health so I’m sure they feel it’s worth the risk.

Groupthink among a very few scouts/observers.
One says “He’s probably going to get hurt again,” and then it’s like a game of telephone among the rest of them until we get to the point where “HE’S A TICKING TIME BOMB READY TO EXPLODE AND WIPE OUT THE ENTIRE DUGOUT!”
"When I want my men to remember something important, to really make it stick, I give it to them double dirty."- General George S. Patton
Yeah, and Goldstein is a rabid supporter of that mindset
Right now, he’s doubled down on two hypotheses – that Scheppers’ arm will one day literally fly off his shoulder and bean the third baseman and that Elvis is not a very good hitter.

Interesting theory
Does the negative of losing Scheppers’ out weight the positive of seeing MY get hit by a flying limp arm? I mean it would be pretty funny until the realization that somebody just lost a limb set in.
No, I don't believe it's groupthink
I’m sure Goldstein really believes that, and so does his buddy Jason Parks. I don’t agree.

I dunno if I'd agree with that first sentance at this point.
I kinda have the feeling that they’re trying to open up the option of bringing Scheppers up as a potential impact starter during a stretch run if they need to.
Which might be pretty smart, really, the way Harden has performed and given Dutch’s fragility this season.

I was wondering if they would pull a switcheroo
Drop CJ into the bully again and start Scheppers
That being said, Scheppers won’t be good for very many starts with his inning ceiling, so it’d have to be pretty late in the season.
I doubt they do this, I was just pondering the matter
