Saturday a.m. Rangers things

I am epically unenthused about doing the links this morning.  That really sucked last night.

Anthony Andro's game story talks about blowing another 4 run lead to Baltimore.  Ditto the game story on the Rangers' website.

Matt Harrison will be called up today, and Cliff Lee will join the team.  Doug Mathis and Pedro Strop will be optioned to AAA.

Jon Daniels says his ability to leave the Rangers if there is an ownership change is a "non-story."

Oh, yeah...the Rangers traded for Cliff Lee.

Anthony Andro calls the Lee acquisition an early Christmas present for the Rangers players, who were fired up by the news.

Evan Grant writes that Michael Young's reaction to the deal was to turn to Ian Kinsler and say, "Dude, we're getting Cliff Lee."

Sullivan writes that Lee is excited about joining the Rangers.

Kevin Sherrington says the trade is a very good thing for Texas.

Chris Cox has a story about Justin Smoak and his reaction to being traded.

Barry Shlachter has a story about the latest developments in the bankruptcy proceedings.

Jennifer Floyd Engel has a column about Nolan Ryan, the bankruptcy, and the Lee trade.

Why?

Of the five mentioned 6 mentioned above CJ is probably the 4th or 5th best option right now.

You keep Lee, Lewis, and Hunter for sure. They are our best/most reliable pitchers right now. Harden will probably get another shot. One spot for CJ or Holland. I’d rather go CJ in the pen and put Holland in the rotation rather than CJ starting and Holland in AAA.

by Heebs on Jul 10, 2010 12:55 PM CDT up reply actions

CJ has given the team 108.1 IP over 17 starts

And a 3.24 ERA to go with that. While he seems to be overachieving a bit based on his FIP, xFIP, tRA, he’s still done a great job this season and isn’t likely to have some huge second half collapse. Hunter’s been great, but the only way he’s going to replace Wilson in the rotation is if CJ is hurt. The top 4 will be Lee, Lewis, Wilson, and Feldman. If Harden comes back looking good, Hunter and Holland are either going to be in the bullpen or in the minors waiting for a spot to open up.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

No way Hunter is sent down with Feldman pitching like this

If they will mortgage the future for this year by trading Smoak et al they are in a win now mode. That would include sending your recently extended shitty starter to the pen. Any other move would be non-sense.

by Heebs on Jul 10, 2010 1:23 PM CDT up reply actions

What are you going to do with Feldman?

No options and while its a SSS, the last few times they’ve tried putting him in the bullpen have not ended up pretty. Plus, as much as he’s disappointed everyone this season with his overall performance, he still hasn’t been bad enough for the team to have to cut him or DL him.

Interestingly though

His FIP is the same right now as it was in 2009 4.31.

Big difference? 2009 BABIP .275, 2010 BABIP .347.

Similar K Rate, Walk Rate, and HR Rate.

by Heebs on Jul 10, 2010 1:29 PM CDT up reply actions

I suspect the change in BABIP has something to do with the lost cutter.

That pitch isn’t working for him this year the way it did last year.

by JDT217 on Jul 10, 2010 2:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Hasn't his cutter lost speed/movement?

Is there a reason it’s been unlucky this year?

by selke99 on Jul 10, 2010 3:32 PM CDT up reply actions

It hasn't really lost much velocity.

Neither Texas Leaguers nor FanGraphs has any record of its movement in 2009, which seems strange to me. But, the horizontal movement on it has actually been better than average this year.

It’s obviously possible Feldman for one season had a magical pitch that allowed him to be able to do things no pitchers are able to do over a large sample. But the evidence is that it was much more likely just getting good results for a season thanks to thinks out of Feldman’s control, and it’s been getting bad results due to things out of his control this year. I’d find it easier to doubt that if he’d done it for more than a season.

Further, if he has lost something off of the cutter, he’s adapted by doing better things with other pitches than he did last year. It happens.

As far as a reason for it, there are ton of possible reasons, but the simple one is just that many, many aspects of pitching performance don’t stabilize over even a full season. So a pitch that’s only thrown a little more than 1/3 of the time over that sample is even more prone to sample size noise.

by philkid3 on Jul 10, 2010 4:19 PM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

Good stuff

Just frustrating to see him struggle with results this season compared to last. Hopefully his start last night will be more of things to come. Or we probably hope we get something better out of Holland/Harden.

by selke99 on Jul 10, 2010 4:26 PM CDT up reply actions

I want to make sure I'm understanding you correctly.

Are you saying that the effectiveness of the cutter will not have any impact on a pitcher’s BABIP over a large sample size?

Does that hold true for Mo Rivera as well?

by JDT217 on Jul 10, 2010 4:27 PM CDT up reply actions

Even Rivera's BABIP goes up and down wildly.

Last 5 years: .270, .335, .232, .263, .190. So yeah, the .275 to .347 jump Feldman had from last year to this year is not unprecedented.

Overall Rivera has maintained a nice .274 career regular-season BABIP (Feldman is at .298), which is right where Feldman was last year (.275), but I don’t think Feldman’s ever going to have as good stuff as Rivera that you could expect him to keep it down there.

The difference between Rivera and Feldman is that Rivera has good enough overall stuff that even with a .335 BABIP he was still striking out almost 4 more per 9 innings and only put up a 3.15 ERA (compared to a 2.22 career average).

He’s been a borderline #3 starter probably this season, possibly in the high end range for #4s. If it was only Feldman vs. Hunter with nothing else to take into consideration, Hunter wins. But with Feldman’s contract and Hunter’s options, Hunter isn’t going to win that battle.

Most people on here where at least neutral or supportive of Smoak. But it seemed like everyone else absolutely hated the guy.

It’s true, I am an idiot, but I was always aware that Cliff Lee was not going to ever sign with Seattle after this year. Would any star willingly want to live in a clammy socialist enclave? It’s just that we didn’t think it was too unreasonable to expect at least ONE major league ready player RIGHT NOW, because if you hadn’t noticed the Ms are fielding a PCL team desparately in need of a major league infusion poste haste. None of these guys are ready for the bigs, including Smoak. By the way, if Smoak is an unlucky hitter, as one poster suggests, (and one who strikes out a ton as gleaned from his season stats) he will fit right in with this crew.

In all fairness to Justin the dislike alot of Rangers fans feel for him goes back to his holdout when the team drafted him. His agent made him hold out and he got his millions without proving a damn thing. Now he has forced his way up and totally underwhelmed us all. He may be great one day but I seriously doubt it. He is slow, lacks range and is … See Morealoof. He is in it strictly for the money and we cant warm to him because he will be gone as soon as he gets free agency. He is another Texieria in waiting. The Rangers are sticking with him because they know this and want to do what they can to make him more valuable. if it helps us land Lee awesome..time well spent. He needs to stop the switch hitter charade and focus on hitting left handed first. My main reason for disliking him is he is simply taking up space and will be gone..Hopefully that will happen with the trade deadline.

Tony Tanner
Smoaks defense? For real? Davis makes smoak look like a little leaguer in defense! Most people say offense and I say at tops they may equel out in stats in the major but davis ahead in productivity

Feliz in the 9th

It was weird. I’m sure you guys talked about it in the GDT but he was bringing it at 94 or so and seemed to be throwing more offspeed and breaking pitches than usual. Then guys were all over the bases and Maddux came out to talk to him. Immediately it was almost all fastballs, and they were in the high nineties. And then, suddenly, there was that crazy changeup or whatever it was that effectively ended the game.

Some of that has to be on Molina. Maybe not that last change, but prior to Maddux coming out. Even if Feliz doesn’t have his sharpest command he can get guys out throwing as hard as he does. If he’s going to be a closer he should throw 90 percent fastballs and leave the other shit on the table.

by Black Francis on Jul 10, 2010 1:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Mike Bacsik had this to say
This is where new catcher hurts you. Molina believes Feliz can throw offspeed stuff. His CB and Ch are D grades. FB A+. throw the heat
In big leagues, coaches don’t call pitches. Catcher makes a suggestion and pitcher makes the decision. Molina wanted offspeed the pitch b4
Feliz shook off and threw FB. Then conf. Then Molina convinced the 22 year old CH is the pitch

Yeah

I don’t blame Molina for Feliz loading the bases and not being able to get out of one inning with a 4 run lead. Nor do I blame him for the inning the night before which included 1 (or 2?) bases loaded walks along with 2 hit batters. But man, that popped up bunt and the bases loaded no out double play really makes me curse that trade. And yeah, the dude is really fat.

This may sound crazy, but you could probably argue that the Molina trade was worse than the Cliff Lee trade. Wasn’t Ray alone worth Molina?

I guess I didn't finish my point

that from the way Molina was playing the last couple of years (and what the SF fans thought of him too) along with age, he probably wasn’t worth the extra money/Main.

It’s also funny that a Giants fan posted on here that Molina hit in the middle of their lineup, which made him look worse. He was saying that with TX, hitting at the bottom of the lineup would “hide” him a bit. Yet Wash hits him 6th above Cruz (I know, struggling mightily, but still a better option) the last 2 nights. Unexplainable. Shouldn’t be hitting higher than 7-8.

I'm more excited for this than any Rangers game in a long time.

But, still, I’m constantly reminded of what’s happened the last two days, and how merely protecting a four-run lead at home against the Orioles is all that’s keeping the Rangers from 6.5 up.

It hurts. But at least there’s something to make it hurt a lot less.

by philkid3 on Jul 10, 2010 2:36 PM CDT up reply actions

I like this.

You know, I looked at the second half schedule last night, and it doesn’t feel end of the worldish to me at all.

It doesn’t feel like nearly 50 wins, but I don’t think the Rangers feel like much more than 90 wins, so that’s okay.

by philkid3 on Jul 10, 2010 2:58 PM CDT up reply actions

Also...

think of this. If the Rangers were going to have two games like this, imagine facing today with Harry starting. Instead, it’s Cliff Lee. Cliff Lee came at exactly the right time. It’s possible that last night could have destroyed this team emotionally, and yet, today, they have the biggest reason to go out and play EVER.

Good point.

We would all be bitching to no end about the last 2 days and Harrison starting tonight.

It is Cliff Lee Day everybody

I get fireworks after the game too? Isnt that just perfect poetic justice?

Prediction:

Cliff will go 9 strong innings, 7 strikeouts, 1 walk, Rangers win 8-0…

I drink as many beers as Cliff has strikeouts… Come visit me in section 320 if you are in the area… row 3… Will be in a blue or pink long sleeve shirt… Come say helllooo!

Check this out....

some dumbass on sportsline posted this

Hey, so I know it’s an unorthodox idea, but after watching this Orioles series, I have to wonder: how amazing would it be if Cliff Lee served as a 1-man wrecking crew coming out of the bullpen night after night??? Texas’ rotation has already done fairly well, and having Lee able to eat up innings and mow ‘em down with so few pitches. . .between his consistency and his record going the distance when getting to the 9th, if he just came out and threw 2-4 to shut it down each night. . .how amazing would THAT be? Would there be some contract clause or something preventing this? would he have ace arrogance in spite of what an incredible middle relief + closer value he could bring to this team? As I say, I know it’s a strange idea, but it seems to be this Rangers team has the division locked with this acquisition, but could absolutely soar if they used Lee in this less obvious role. Any thoughts?

I can't wait for the day when Bengie Molina is a 500 lb. retiree wearing depends and Michael Main is anchoring the Giants rotation. What a special several years that will be!!

After watching Cliff Lee tonight, you will probably feel much better about yourself!

So just hold out for a few more hour! No need for you to go all suicidal before you even get a chance to see Lee pitch.

By the way, you joined LSB on my birthday. Either you or I should feel special, I just don’t know which.

Funniest part of the Lee trade is my $50 bet with a Tigers fan that the Rangers would have a better record at the end

His comment was “oh, that’s bullshit. Might as well give you the 50 bucks now.”

"You promised me, Eckstein, that if I followed you, you would walk with me always. But I noticed that during the most trying periods of my life, there have only been one set of prints in the sand. Why, when I have needed you most, have you not been there for me?" David Eckstein replied, "Because my little legs had gotten tired, and you were carrying me." And I looked down and saw that I was still carrying David Eckstein.

Then he grounded out weakly to second.
