Sunday morning Rangers things

That was very disappointing last night.

Jeff Wilson's game story says that, while Cliff Lee went 9 innings yesterday, he gave up too many long balls.

Ron Washington is quoted in Chris Cox's game story as saying that he felt the Rangers should have done better against Chris Tillman.

Jennifer Floyd Engel says that, despite yesterday's performance, the Rangers are better now that they have Lee.

Tim Cowlishaw also has a column up about adding Lee.

The S-T's notes include Chris Davis saying that he's more comfortable with his mechanics now than when he was sent down.

The notes at the Rangers website includes talk about Nelson Cruz, Davis, and Michael Young.

I am so tired of hearing about Chris Davis' swing mechanics.

Just shut up and hit.

And I say this bc he is overly cerebral and gets in his own nugget.

Is there a bigger scapegoat than vague declarations of 'fixed mechanics'?

I hear Brandon Macarthy and Rich Harden have tweaked their mechanics, too…

86.7 wins total with that projection method.

But that wasn’t your original question. It was whether or not one little stretch foretold the entire rest of the season.

And it doesn’t, especially when you don’t cheat with your numbers. Taking that 1-5 stretch in NY and Boston out of the 13-22 gives you 12-17, which is .414, and you can’t tell me that .167 “foretold” .414. One’s season-crippling, the other is much more workable.

Most of the teams in recent history

who had close (within 10 runs) to a +77 run differential thru 87 games won 93-99 games,

We’re definitely legit and I can see why the Ranger FO made this deal. There were some really good teams and a couple of champions (Ozzie’s White Sox, ’04 Red Sox) in this group.

Those games in the first half came without our rotation having Cliff Lee and that’s obviously going to help but these are the Texas Rangers (who go thru life with a perpetual anvil over their heads and are managed Cocaine Ron) so I gotta see it before I believe it..

Good teams in the late 80s, but they couldn’t get past the hated Lakers. Then a long period of suck, some false hope with exciting rookies and young players in the middle of the decade, and then finally some good building blocks toward the end of the decade, and an ownership change to usher in the new era.

Spooky.

Like that pretty good. The tinny production fits.

One thing I’ve noticed on these links you shoot me — the sound production schtick every band seems to attempt. Now I know lots of these bands are indie, DIY-type ventures operating on a shoestring, toting boxfulls of pawnshop gadgetry into the studio with them, but it’s interesting that like every one of them has adopted a unique production sound to enhance their identity. It’s usually like the first thing that strikes me when I hit play.

Production

The one thing that irks me about Jack White is how disparaging he is of computers.

I get that he doesn’t like making things easy.

But the equipment he uses, the vintage everything…mics, preamps, reel to reel machines, amplifiers, mixers, and of course guitars…it’s just so overwhelmingly expensive.

Computers are good for one simple reason. They’re affordable. Especially if people aren’t buying physical media (right…making vinyl, as Jack White insists on, is also expensive).

Anyway, you could substitute M Ward for Jack White, same aesthetics and influences if different songwriting. But M Ward isn’t trumpeting his recording philosophies…actually the first thing comes to mind hearing his stuff is Tascam cassette 4-track, which he says is still where his ideas begin. And, like Elliott Smith, he’s actually a proponent of cheap microphones.

Anyway, I carry that rant around with me everywhere.

She and Him is as big budget as it comes for an indie record, I’m sure they handpicked their recording methods. Nice when it turns out so well.

Go Strangers.

by hightowersmith on Jul 11, 2010 1:02 PM CDT up reply actions

If I could afford the vintage stuff I'd use it.

I have vintage instruments and amps…Line6 or whatever could never replicate them in a million years. Old recording gear generally sounds better, too, if it’s used properly, but then again I guess it depends on how you want things to sound. I’m a huge Guided by Voices fan, too, so I certainly have nothing against TASCAM cassette 4 tracks and cheap mics.

I prefer tape delay to digital delay but it’s not like I’m going to say The Edge sounds bad. He used a lot of solid state stuff back in the 80’s and those records turned out pretty damn well. There are equipment snobs and there are practical people. Same thing in photography. There are people who think your stuff is shit if it’s not shot through an old Leica with the film developed in a bathroom or basement. If I had the time and the money I’d like to shoot that way sometimes. Digital can’t replicate that look very well, either, but that doesn’t mean a Canon digiital Rebel is incapable of taking a great photo.

If a musician or photographer feels more like an artist when they’re doing everything slowly and by hand like the vintage stuff requires, fine by me. I can actually understand that. But when they get all snobby about it, that’s pretty stupid. There’s more than one way to skin a cat.

by Black Francis on Jul 11, 2010 1:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Saw this on eBay...

http://bit.ly/db7rOI

I have a friend who’s accomplished some nice things on a Tascam 38 with DBX noise. Taking space into consideration, that’s the best home analog solution.

The photography analogy works. Pragmatism vs. snobbery.

Grieve beat this into the ground last night.

Tillman compiled his numbers early on, went back to AAA and owned the league. He had a no hitter, a one-hitter, and an ERA around 1.00 if I recall. Clearly he figured something out down there. So it would seem that getting beat by a kid like shouldn’t be as embarrassing as it seems. He’s still young and was a pretty highly regarded player when he was traded for, I believe.

It would have been nice if the Rangers would have made him work a little harder, but at least they’re not hacking like they did last year. Still, it would have been nice to get to the Baltimore pen a little earlier.

If there's one thing we can take from that game

it’s that Cliff Lee is the anti-Harden. 9 innings on 95 pitches while allowing 6 runs? Harden would be lucky to make it 4 with that line.

I think we (well, at least I) conditioned ourselves for so long that Lee would require one or even two of our top prospects plus other very good players as well that I was going to hate the deal no matter what. But after reading dozens of commenters locally and nationally, the thoughts of everyone here and fermenting my own feelings for a couple of days, I’m sanguine about it. I hate losing Smoak, but I don’t think I ever really believed the Rangers would have someone as good as Lee is right now at the top of their rotation this year. Or ever, perhaps.

CRUZ

Reading Wash’s comments about CRUZ, I think he applies a different standard than to other hitters in slumps. When Hamilton was slumping, he just got moved to the 5th spot. When Kinsler was slumping, he just stuck with him. CRUZ is a monster hitter and should be left alone and he will come out of his slump and be the Cruz Missle Launcher we are so familiar with.

Honest to God, I did it.

I go to a small Baptist church that is in a little community called Tell that is about 2 miles from my house. My granddad is the preacher and he used to be a former HS football coach so he constantly talks about sports. Our song leader is a former professional roper and the father of 2008 World Champion Calf Roper Stran Smith the former father-in-law of 7 time World Champion Roy Cooper. That is about the only information I can provide so that at least you know the church does exist. I can’t provide you with visual evidence because of course our church service isn’t filmed and televised or anything. I got the idea at the first of the church service between songs when the song leader was introducing people or something. To be honest though, most of the people in my church are old folks so they don’t hear a word I say when I pray.

I have considered filming church service with my Rebel T1i digital camera.

So that my great-grandma (97) could get to hear her son preach and because that was where she went to church the last few years before she went into a nursing home. But a 16 GB memory card is like 50 or 60 dollars and is still wouldn’t have enough storage space because my granddad likes to have an hour and a half long sermon.

by casew on Jul 11, 2010 1:32 PM CDT up reply actions

We have an old one, but the filming capabilities of the Rebels are really pretty nice.

I only have one video up from when I used it before and it is a short hunting video. I almost like the video capabilities of my camera better than the photo capabilities. It is not incredibly great like you would get from a nice camcorder but it isn’t terrible for a dual purpose camera.

If you don’t believe me about the camera, you can go check out the one video link that I my internet was fast enough to upload.

OldHossRadbourn Ah, Bat Day. That promotion cost us about 4,000 fans, as due to a scheduling blunder Bat Day coincided with “Irish and Italian Day.”

OT: Good news the Barefoot Bandit has been caught!!

The 19 year old kid who stole several planes, and flew them to their crash landings, boats, and tons of home break ins in U.S. and Canada has been caught in the Bahamas

I haven't seen San Francisco fans celebrate like this since the last ghey pride event.

I can't wait for the day when Bengie Molina is a 500 lb. retiree wearing depends and Michael Main is anchoring the Giants rotation. What a special several years that will be!!
