LSB Geographical Survey

After the rather successful LSB education survey, it is time to further explore some of the other characteristics of our LSB population. Yes, I know this will be a Texas and DFW heavy poll, but I bet there will be a few outliers states that will surprise everyone.

Feel free to comment with the specifics of the city and state of where you currently live. Hopefully this will help make it easier for our far away LSB members to find someone else to enjoy watching the Rangers with. I hope this stimulates as much discussion as the last one.

Thank you

is that close to Guyer HS? I have a game there in a couple hours and it would piss me off if another game gets rained out.

Not really that close

but if it’s not raining on camous, it’s probably not raining at Guyer.

There are quite a few guys one here from UNT

I bet we could get 6 or 8 at least to go to a bar for the game. I tend to end up at the tavern due to its close proximity to most of my night classes it its ability to allow me to run in during the evening break and grab a quick shot

it was unbelievable…. Other schools loved coming to SFA to play away games if they got to stay the night… would take them out and it was pretty much a guaranteed score…

Do you live in downtown?

Or uptown? Isn’t downtown pretty creepy at night?

by BuckyB on Jul 2, 2010 3:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Nope, definitely downtown.

It’s actually not as creepy as it used to be – I used to live in the Santa Fe Terminal Lofts years ago and it was creepy then. Now it’s much better – there are actual people who are not homeless walking around at night.

There are still certain parts of downtown (about a block away from South Side on Lamar, which is where we just moved out of) where I wouldn’t go after dark, or in the daytime alone, but for the most part it’s not too bad at all.

"Locals rule"

The term “locals,” as they refer to themselves, really doesn’t mean that you grew up there. It is racial code for “not white or black.” I actually had a woman refuse to show me her house for rent when she learned I wasn’t “local.”

Basically, many there a. don’t like white guys and black guys, and b. don’t like the military. That is not to say that everybody is like that. Lots of great peeps there, too. And with regard to b., they have a legitimate complaint, in my opinion. Lots of knucklehead service members get over there and obnoxiously disrespect the culture.

The surfing and scuba there is, of course, heaven on earth. And the wahine (women) are equally so. If you can get into that, and don’t mind groundhog day weather, it can be a load of fun.

All that isn’t enough to make it an unappealing place to live, but

I was stuck in Guam for an extended stay and met up with this local who worked for the govt as well as an aerobics instructor. Things were going great until the time approached when I had to leave. A local GI told me to tread very lightly as she prolly had uncles and cousins who where huge and would waffle stomp me for breaking her heart.

Per his advice, I looked her up in the phone book…7 pages of the same last name! Eff, I never called her again, and shipped out in a few days, luckily. Sigh, she was soooo smoking hot, dammit.

Violent crime isn't a big problem

But theft, particulary auto theft and break-ins, is.

When you drive to the beach, you need to lock your valuables up BEFORE you get there. Throwing your stuff in the trunk after you park makes you a more likely target, not less. And be sure and have full coverage on your vehicles.

Suggestion from a former Oahu resident/military guy

Live either in downtown Honolulu, hawaii kai or on the windward side, like Kailua or Kaneohe. It’s prettier than everywhere but the North Shore, which is too remote to commute to any of the bases, and will give you more of the authentic Hawaiian feel.

I strongly, strongly recommend avoiding the leeward side, especially Ewa Beach, a true shithole and thieves’ paradise. That is where a large majority of military people end up, and it is a good way to ensure you soak up as little Hawaiian culture as possible.

What branch of service? If you are a marine my suggestion is even more of a no-brainer, but even going to the other 3 bases, you will be commuting against traffic, with the added bonus of living in the prettier, more convenient, more diverse, and more happenin locale. Better beaches, better restaurants, better nightlife, better wahine. And let’s be honest, there’s a lot of meatheads in the military-there’ll be less of those, too.

If you have any questions, I’d be happy to answer them.

Thanks for the great info

I’m in the Army. I’ll be working at Tripler Hospital. I’d like to live relatively close to avoid the traffic. Is the windward side or diamond head too far from the hospital or bad for traffic?

by selke99 on Jul 7, 2010 12:29 AM CDT up reply actions

It isn't super close, but all the traffic is going the other way in the morning

“Interstate” 1 only has 2 lanes each way most of the time, so hitting some bad traffic is unavoidable. If you want to be somewhat close, I’d live downtown (not the same thing as Waikiki, but they are next to each other). If you live downtown or in Waikiki, you will be able to walk to many bars and restaurants, and live 10 minutes away from Tripler, too.

I asked my wife today about that soap, and she said that on our first date (in Melbourne), the pub we went to in St. Kilda had a bunch of the male stars from neighbors chillin on the patio. She said she could barely push her way through the ladies room b/c all the skanks were busy trying to make their boobs pop.

So

Our second-leading state is California, followed by Okleehomee, then VA and NY. Not as many in Louisiana as I woulda thought… I guess they’d follow the Astros?

Finding Rangers memorabilia is like a needle in a haystack

Though I found out my local ABC station shows the Rangers Friday games on one of their digital channels. I was shocked.

Rangers in MN

Do you typically go to the games when Texas makes the trip up? I try to make the drive over there when I can. I was at the Target Field series back in May, which was a pretty amazing atmosphere as a baseball fan, but sucked something terrible as a Rangers fan of course.

I grew up in Tulsa, and moved here in 1995, after living in NC and VA for a little while. I think Philkid lives in Spokane (and is a fellow Coug), but who is the other person in Washington?
