Minor's 7/21: Afternoon Baseball
I'll pinch hit for WestTxAg06. He was pry caught off guard by the afternoon baseball.
Per Scott Lucas, here are today's starters:
Today’s Starters
AAA: Rich Harden - we can hope that this will NOT be his last AAA start.
AA: Ryan Tatusko - Can he keep up his good season?
High-A: Kennil Gomez
Low-A: Neil Ramirez-This game could make Dirkatron start drinking earlier than he would like today.
Short-A: Nick McBride
Rookie: Carlos Melo-3 of his last 4 outings he has given up 0 hits twice and 2 hits another time.
Hickory is trailing Delmarva 4-3 in the 5th
Bakersfield is up 1-0 in the 1st.

Melo
Wonder if he gets a bump to Spokane sometime this year. Could be a nice return for Gerald laird in several years
Thanks, didn't realize there was afternoon farm ball today
Interested to see what Melo does, it seems like he’s taking a step forward this year.
I’m hoping for 6 IP, 1 ER, 1 BB, 7 K out of NeilRam, just to make the 2010 Neil Ramirez Conundrum all the more perplexing.

Oh well. JD will recover the farm next year when he has bundles of cash.

I wish it worked that way.
Gaps in your system can be devastating. Think about how rough it is on a college football team with a down recruiting year.
This is true
But just 3 or 4 solid prospects instead of this gap can make a big difference when we’re trading.
It can work that way: See Rangers 2007.
They won’t get developed talent players, but if they can get enough cash to allow for a bump in amateur signings, they could get about the same number if not more blue chippers via extra picks in the draft and extra effort in the international market.
Both pools of talent are expected to be deep next year.

who acted in a movie with... Kevin Bacon
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
Holy shit...
The four arms getting the most notice are lefties Robbie Erlin and Robbie Ross (since promoted to High-A Bakersfield) and right-handers Matt Thompson and Braden Tullis. As a quartet, the group has walked just 68 batters in 314.2 innings.
That’s 1.94 walks per nine innings.
"No nuts, no glory"
We're going to have Twins-style pitching
Only better.

I didn't know Thompson was doing so well
Seemed like he’s had several mediocre starts. Those numbers are all gorgeous, especially Erlin.

throw in Thompson's 1.6+ GB/FB rates and he's having a really good year
dont let the ERA and hits cloud it.
Feliz says his greatest thrill was striking out Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz, one of his heroes. Yet, when he called to tell his parents, his mother had a request: Strike out New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez, too.
"So when I did that," Feliz says, "I told my mom, 'There you go. There's your present. Don't ask me to strike anyone else out, OK?'

for Bakersfield
Gomez 7 shutout innings. Jonathan Greene making a case to be added to the 40 this winter. (3-5, 2HR 5rbi) It is, of course, too little too late for him.
Good to hear out of Kennil, I was starting to throw in the towel on that guy

I hate to tell you this, but...
That’s not a nickname. It’s his actual name.
by NoNameOnCard on Jul 21, 2010 11:14 PM CDT up reply actions
His actual name is Kenny Gomez
If my name were Kenny Greene or Kenny Gregg, etc., and someone started calling me Kenny G, I’d punch them in the mouth.
Why should I have to change my name? He's the one who sucks

AndySeiler Some draft news: Slightly over slot bonuses could start being approved as soon as Friday. Expect an increasing number signed next week.
This is odd to not be fretting and panicking right now over the information, or lack thereof, in regard to overslot first round signings

Hope we hear about a Jackson signing.
Seems uncontrovertial…the team wasn’t exactly in great financial shape when they drafted him.

Sorry, I forgot to put them in.
Does anyone else just go to milb.com and then use the drop down menu to sort the minor league games by their affiliate? It updates automatically, so I just leave that open, and then click on the box score when the game starts
Tweet Robbie Ross to @scoutingtheSAL
Mike Newman ScoutingtheSAL #Braves Robinson Lopez, or Edward Salcedo? #Astros Tanner Bushue? #Rangers Robbie Ross? Who should my next report be on? Most votes wins!

I checked the recap
I figured his hit would be an infield hit or a groundball to the outfield. It says he singled on a line drive….so he’s got that going for him.
Boy...
Harden sure looks like he’s ready, doesn’t he?
5 | 7 | 6 | 6 | 1 | 9 | 2 HR’s
At least he can K guys in AAA and only had 1 walk. Ahh, who am I kiddin’, that line looks like shit.

Did someone say on the postgame thread that he took several of those guys to 3-0 before K'ing them?

Here are some quotes from Skole I found on some random blog that covers georgia baseball
Out of Blessed Trinity, Skole missed most of his senior season with an injury and was ready to go to Georgia Tech on a football scholarship when a recent hot streak really got scouts excited. "Scouts were at all of the last few games, watching everything I did, from warming up to long toss to batting practice," said Skole. The outfielder possesses great speed and is very strong defensively. Skole noted that the scouts also "loved to see the power numbers," and his ability to play multiple sports. The multiple sports may have helped Skole get drafted as highly as he did because it gave him some publicity as the baseball player that dominated the gridiron. "It is a good problem to have," Skole said of his ability to excel at both football and baseball. Skole described the differences between the two in that football is more aggressive while baseball "is more cool and collected. It is more of a mental game." Skole recently agreed to a contract with the Rangers that will give him a $1.557M signing bonus and he will report to either the Rangers rookie team in Arizona or the Class Low-A in Spokane, Washington. With the deal, Skole’s college career is all but over, something that disappoints Skole. "I’m bummed that I’ll miss the atmosphere of an ACC football game." He had planned to walk on to the Tech baseball team and join his brother, All-ACC infielder Matt Skole, but "they (Tech) want the best for me."
In fact Skole was watching his brother play against Alabama when he heard that he had been drafted. While he was excited, Skole also noted that he was relieved to get the "fun ride" over with. "(Being drafted so early) was a little surprising, but I knew it would happen sooner or later."
Here is something from Andy Seiler on March 6th right before Skole hurt his ankle.
This is just to show there was atleast some talk of him going in the 1st or supplemental round before he was injured.
After that game, which should be done around 3:30, I’m driving a little over half an hour to Blessed Trinity Catholic High School out in Woodstock, Georgia, to see Blessed Trinity against Woodland High School. That game will feature three solid prospects, two of them in the 2010 draft. Jake Skole is the main event for the day, and he’s a possible first-day pick,

Probably the first adversity he’s ever faced in the game.

Perfect Game's scouting report on Luke Jackson
Luke Jackson is a 2010 RHP with a 6’2’’, 180 lb. frame from SW Ranches, FL who attends Calvary HS. Lean athletic build, projects well. Back turn delivery, long loose fast arm, H 3/4’s extended release, hard front side on cross body landing. FB to 92 mph, CB is potential plus pitch, good velo, late hard downer bite at times, medium depth. Not much feel yet for change. Nice power arm with lots of projection left for future. Good student
two more scouting reports from perfect game, this time from sophomore year 2008
Luke Jackson is a 2010 RHP with a 6’2’’, 165 lb. frame from SW Ranches, FL who attends Westminster Academy. Jackson is a young looking RHP listed at 6’2" with a MLB arm. We have seen him in the 90s before and he threw 90 mph in the PG Aflac game. He attacks hitters with the fastball getting a lot of momentum to the plate. He also showed a very promising breaking ball in the mid 70s and a good feel for the change up. Jackson is a good student and should be recruited heavy by the power DI colleges. He could develop into a good draft pick as well.
Luke Jackson is a 2010 RHP with a 6’2’’, 175 lb. frame from Ft. Lauderdale, FL who attends Westminster Academy. Lean projectable body. Loose, whippy arm, high energy but smooth delivery, high 3/4’s release point, easy velocity, touches 91 mph from stretch, sharp downer CB at 76 mph, flashes change up. Good athlete, 7.22 runner, has some bat speed and hitting ability, projects well across the board. Good student
Jackson's size
On the 2010 Florida legends roster, Jackson is listed as 6’4" 195lbs instead of the 6’2" 180 we’ve often seen. It looks like he didn’t join the team until 2 July 2010, so this might be a more accurate of his current size.
Reaaaaally
this would be compelling and fantastic.

A couple more
The sporting news:
bq. 45. Texas Rangers
Luke Jackson, RHP, Calvary Christian Academy (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.)
The Miami commit has a big body and frame that leads scouts to believe he will gain velocity in the future. He touches 93 mph now. An extremely fluid motion produces that “easy cheese.” His curve will sit at 79-82, and the pitch shows potential. He gets on top of the ball with ease.
Athlon Sports:
bq. Miami commit that didn’t start pitching until his freshman season in high school rocks the Pistol Pete hairstyle.
I didn’t realize Jackson didn’t start pitching until his freshman year. If he has grown as well, that makes him a very exciting prospect.
