Ryan testifying on the impact of the bankruptcy on the Rangers

Daniel Kaplan is tweeting from Judge Lynn's courtroom today as testimony continues on the Rangers bankruptcy today, and you can read his tweets here

But as I type this, Nolan Ryan is apparently testifying on the impact the bankruptcy is having on the Rangers operations.  Kaplan's two most recent tweets on the issue:

Ryan tells auction hearing the bankruptcy is causing team not to be able to sign intl players, "there is a void in our system."

Ryan tells court team is being forced to deplete minor league system because of the bankruptcy

Just one more reminder of the harm Tom Hicks, and HSG's financial issues, are having on the team...

More updates on this as it comes available...

that

really, really sucks.

So, they couldn’t sign their top pick in ‘09, they had a castrated draft budget for ’10, they have to sell prospects because they can’t add salary, they aren’t signing international talent and now they’re losing their scouts.

How badly does this affect the team’s chances of continuing to compete three or four years down the line? Are we basically looking at a team that has to win the World Series before then?

you are crazy if you

don’t believe there is a real chance of this happening. THEY HAVE NO FREAKING MONEY. they had to GIVE away a prospect that was pretty good for $2million, I’m not sure where Josh is contract wise but if he is due arb you could be looking at a $5 million raise if not more

by blueballlefty on Jul 21, 2010 3:02 PM CDT up reply actions

We are already 5 million over projected revenue this season

If we make the playoffs that will only increase that amount along with better than expected 2nd half attendance and revenue most likely.

Based on this years revenue they can probably add a few million into next years payroll to keep current players. It may mean we don’t have any money to go get free agents but to keep current players I think we can find the money.

by bigsteve on Jul 21, 2010 3:06 PM CDT up reply actions

How much of that money do we

owe to MLB? although I think if we lost Josh it would be in the trade arena. I can see MLB giving us enough money to pay is Arb. number and then us agreeing to trade him

As of now we've only lost Main and beavan

So as it stands right now we aren’t hurting too much. But if this drags out even more and we have to sell more prospects then it could really start hurting. We signed a good portion of our draft class but haven’t done anything in LA which hurts but again not as much since we signed a lot of our NA draft class.

not impossible

but difficult. Would need to make a list of guys you would have expected the Rangers to select (based on patterns of past drafts of players relative to draft position, talent level, and bonus demands) and then use Wang’s prospect valuations to get an idea as it associates to WAR. Need to know the grades for those guys and the guys the Rangers drafted and the rough position of where they’d fall in the Top Prospects order.

Obviously, it wouldn’t be spot-on accurate, but you could get in the ballpark with it. Would take time to collect the data though, and I don’t have all the access to the scouting grades and/or reports…

OK

I guess what I was asking was more if they were using last years numbers as a projection. For instance they say through 50 home games we should make X amount based on a per game average of X. Whereas we are currently 5 million ahead of that. Last year our NY and BOS series were earlier in the year so as of now they wouldn’t have affected a per game estimate yet. And since those games figure to be sellouts or near sellouts it would only increase that overage of the budget

by bigsteve on Jul 21, 2010 2:10 PM CDT up reply actions

But they projected

that those series, that we havent yet played, would be sellouts, guarantee it. So, what is bigger is when we have games that arent supposed to be big draws, but that bring big crowds

What if instead of going game by game or series by series they used an average

For instance (using made up numbers here) they averaged $400,000 per game last year (20,000 people at $20 average ticket price) and used that number as a base for their projections for this year. They would probably have to use a lower number than normal given their budgetary constraints.

This year they have averaged $500,000 per game (25,000 at $20 average ticket price so far). $100,000 a game for 50 home games is $5 mil. And we haven’t had the BOS or NY series which would surely draw more than 25,000 people and probably higher than $20 average ticket price.

I doubt those pre-arb and arb guys have anything like that in them

It's DIPS financing

(Debtor In Possession) – that type of loan isn’t meant to expand a bankrupt entity but keep it running until it gets sold. Heck, it might be if MLB increased its financing the Lenders would throw a fit since I believe DIPS has superpriority in payment over all of them.

"You promised me, Eckstein, that if I followed you, you would walk with me always. But I noticed that during the most trying periods of my life, there have only been one set of prints in the sand. by Closure GT on Jul 21, 2010 3:25 PM CDT up reply actions

It caused a portion of it

There was prepetition and postpetition financing by MLB (or more accurately an affiliate of MLB).

Well, technically he's correct

The MLB loan is what results in MLB basically controlling the team’s finances, and limiting what they can spend money on.

Chicken and Egg

Which came first? Hicks’ defaulting on the note caused the problems – which is being made worse with this thing being in bankruptcy and not getting out. MLB didn’t have to loan the team money and could have made them become a bare bones operation.

The former First Rounder and Stanford alum has always hit for decent Power stats, albeit with low batting averages. However, since he can also play First Base, do you see the Phillies trading him at the Deadline to get a 2nd Baseman or Starting pitcher?

Do you, agree? also, was there a sense amongst people in the industry that the Mariners did not want to really deal with the Yankees if they could avoid it — or that they accepted less? Thank you

Jim Callis: I’d rather have Montero than Smoak but I thought the deals were comparable. The Mariners clearly preferred Smoak. I don’t buy that the Mariners accepted less to spurn the Yankees—that’s garbage and makes no sense. Nolan Ryan quote from ESPNDallas
He also worried about having financing in order for next season and told the judge he was specifically worried about keeping Hamilton, whose .357 batting average through Tuesday leads the major leagues.

“I don’t know that I want to be there [if] Josh Hamilton doesn’t come back next year,” Ryan said.

Hamilton signed a one-year, $3.25 million contract with the Rangers in January and could command a much higher salary next year. Ryan put the potential range at $8 million to $10 million.

Basically said the Plan couldn’t limit liability after the BR process was over. It would be an easy change (not sure if it’s happened).

Conservative, as in judges with a conception of small government powers, don’t conceive of their own power as very big.

It’s that jackass above’s fault to interpret conservative as conservative activist. For the majority of the last 100 years, that’s what conservative has meant. Only in the relatively really recent has there been conservative activism

by bking on Jul 21, 2010 5:17 PM CDT up reply actions

Not an expert

But MLB has already offered a $21.5m line of credit for the DIP financing. It doesn’t seem outlandish to me for the judge to have the power to oversee how the DIP financing is used/implemented.

I don’t know that, technically. Wyo might. But that seems reasonable…

by grn_lantern on Jul 21, 2010 4:56 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't even see why that's true

just because you are willing to loan someone money under certain conditions doesn’t mean you are willing to loan money under all conditions

by ab03 on Jul 21, 2010 4:57 PM CDT up reply actions

Outside of a bankruptcy

of course that’s true. But DIP is special stuff.

Like I said, I have no idea how that works statutorily. Maybe he’s off his rocker. It’s just something I can imagine Congress sticking in the Code.

by grn_lantern on Jul 21, 2010 5:00 PM CDT up reply actions

The Judge would have some oversight but it would mostly be the CRO I believe

If a company needs $X to make payroll and pay its insurance then the CRO would use DIP financing to cover it. But the CRO’s not going to start using DIP financing to make additions to an office building or anything.

"You promised me, Eckstein, that if I followed you, you would walk with me always. But I noticed that during the most trying periods of my life, there have only been one set of prints in the sand. everything will be appealed and there will be lawsuits multiple times in regards to unethical actions and proceedings over this that will be a black cloud over the team for several years.
