Off day Cowboys talk

I know we're mad at the media for their collective fellatio of everything Cowboys, but, seeing that it is the off-day, I would like to talk some 'Boys.  Talking points after the jump.

Star-divide

What's Roy Williams' roll going forward?  If Dez continues to impress on the field, are we talking about a 10-million dollar slot receiver?  Because frankly, I'd rather have the guy who's actually produced in that spot, Patrick Crayton, doing that job.

Obviously Felix is your primary back going into the season, but what would you like to see with MB3?  Maybe a reversion back to his roll as power-back, third-down/goal line guy?  That's when we all fell in love with MB3, and he just hasn't had the same aggressiveness since being made the primary back.  Be it injuries or fatigue or a different approach to running, I'd love to see the old MB3 back.

What are our expectations of the ILBs we've drafted to two past years?  Williams was a wash last year and Lee's obviously going to face a learning curve, but do we see those guys starting side-by-side in 2012?

Can Beuhler get the job done?

Can Doug Free?

Will Miles Austin see a regression in his numbers this year as teams begin really gameplanning to stop him?  Or will Dez and the rest keep the heat off him?

Cowboys.

PS: I retract what I said about OT Fanposts.  They have their place, especially on off days.

Shouldn't this be a Cowboys thread?

Not the usual off day, off topic general discussion madness? Because I want to have general discussion, not talk about “Roy Williams’ roll [sic]”

(I’m not trying to rip you or anything, just rather have the ODOT thread be less all Cowboys, all the time.)

Obviously I can't wait to see Dez

But it’s probably wise to not expect too much right away. Wideouts just rarely make a huge impact early.

But after him, I’m most pumped about Lee. I think Wiliams won’t amount to much more than a body, but I’ve got some hope for Lee.

Yeah, I think we definitely need to tap the breaks on Dez

700 yards and maybe 40 or 50 catches would be a success as far as I’m concerned.

It really just depends how they use him

if he’s not being used as a pure deep threat, he might very well have a 800-1000 yard season.

Maybe

I doubt it though.

Say he had the success of Maclin last year. To me, you take that from a rookie. Even with all his success and production in other areas, Harvin didn’t break 800.

I mean, wouldn’t you say DeSean Jackson had one of the more successful rookie campaigns for a WR that we’ve seen in recent years? Or Calvin Johnson? But those guys seem to be the exception. Hard to expect anything like that from Bryant.

by brettgardner on Jul 26, 2010 12:30 PM CDT up reply actions

And you have to wonder about touches.

Miles is going to be the primary target. Witten will absolutely see 5 or 6 balls at least per game. Then you have Felix out of the backfield to throw to (and let’s not forget the Cowboys are A RUNNING TEAM), and throw in Roy and Crayton, and you start wondering just how many balls Dez will end up seeing per game.

It doesn’t seem a stretch to think that Dez will be starting by midseason, though. Roy and Crayton suck for the most part.

I dunno

I think Dez could have a huge year. It looks like the Cowboys are doing anything they can to have him start oppo to Miles. I understand rookie WRs don’t have much of a rookie year, but this guy’s attitude just seems to be a little different. He’s a hardworker and a freak of an athlete with some of the best hands in the league already.

As much as i will hate it, I think JG is going to get pass happy, and i think Dez will be a big time beneficiary of that…

Do what works

We got mad at him getting pass happy with Roy Williams and Jason Witten as the primary receivers. I see no need for the improved Romo to be passing a lot when the Roy Williams becomes the 4th best option instead of the second.

I agree with you to an extent...

but look at the teams those rookies were on. Johnson was drafted high on a putrid team with no offensive talent (uh, Roy Williams?). And while the Eagles were a perennial playoff team, they had no WRs. Jackson, I believe, was pretty much made the #1 WR. Dez comes to a team with so many weapons on offense.

I don't think the plan is for him to be returning much

I think they look at him as being too valuable. Maybe at the beginning of the year as they work him into the offense, but I don’t think it will last too long. Hopefully Akwasi Owusu-Ansah (AOA) takes over.

Who would you take Michael Crabtree or Dez?

I know its probably way too early to judge, but who do you think is going to have the better season/career in the NFL? at this point I would probably say Dez given he has a better QB and more stable play around him. But, Crabtree will be coming into his second year, when a lot of highly drafted/ highly respected WRs tend to have their “breakout” year.

thats interesting given both of their measurables

Dez is bigger, Crabtree was slightly faster in his (rumored) 40 time, but scouts think Dez isn’t as good of a possession guy as Crabtree. If i had to guess, its probably because of his poor route running.

I'd love to talk about the Cowboys.

They suck. Football sucks, but they suck in particular. The local media coverage around here is a real beating during football season because of this stupid team who I don’t even think has won a playoff game since the Rangers have. They bore me to fucking tears. Used to, I could tolerate football but now every team is the fucking same. They are all mediocre. No truly great teams. That’s why the NFL sucks, football sucks, and the Dallas Cowboys suck.

Fuck them. If you go to NYC, they don’t lead the local newscast with a story about the Yankees. They may tease them, but unless the Yanks just won the Series or something they don’t lead with a baseball story. Around here they treat Cowboys pre-season games like they are real news. Dirkatron could rape every Dallas City Councilman and the local news would lead with a story about Tony Romo tripping over his shoelaces while chasing Jessica Simpson away from his Porsche.

I hope that garish stadium they built that can probably be seen from the moon falls down and they have to move to fucking El Paso or something.

calm down

The media gives what the people want. Deal with it. If you think the local news is all to blame, you should check out the front cover of yahoo, they’re leading off with the Dez story too. You’re ridiculous. Go whine somewhere else. Ps, if they sucked, they wouldn’t have 5 championships, and they wouldn’t be considered super bowl contender. This is the first year the rangers have that opportunity to just enjoy the ride, and quit complaining about the media.

It made me laugh and I know why

Facebook’s a pretty big website. So, yeah, you’re probably going to find better photos on it than you would on my little website. That certainly doesn’t hurt my feelings. But it was a weird comment all the way around:

First it was a total non sequitur. Nothing to do with anything. Secondly, whether someone likes my photography or not, I just upload the photos up and never brag about them. If I say anything it’s usually self-depreciating. Thirdly, I purposely leave off the EXIF data from the digital files. It could be a film scan, a print scan, or from a cheap vivitar digital I got at Walgreens. I never mention the type of camera I use, good or bad. Lastly I don’t think I’ve ever attacked this “kevzta” person, and it was bizarre that he would launch what I imagine he thought would be a devastating personal attack against me.

That says more about him than it does about me or my photography. Same thing when someone who has never met me claims to know my attitude and what I think of the people here at LSB, saying something as vile as I’m a “terrible excuse for life” and that he “wishes me nothing but shit”.

Used to be, I was more of an asshole than I am now. Maybe I’m paying for past sins which I suppose would be fair. But the truth is that even before I ‘mellowed’ I never hated anyone on LSB. There have been only a few people I haven’t liked and for the most part they are the usual suspects; it’s not like I’m alone in my guilt there.

Whatever.

My thoughts....

1, Dez – I am pumped to see this kid in action. I know ESPN was sad to see him not hold out because they wanted a huge circus surrounding Dallas, but the kid is in camp and is already making plays. I hope for a season similar to Percy Harvin last year which would be a very solid combination with Miles.

2.Roy Williams – I just dont think he is that good anymore….He was never a burner to begin with, and it seems he has lost any seperation that he had…his hands are horribly inconsistent. The one thing I could see him doing is making a nice redzone target…

3.kicker This makes me nervous. I wish we would have just went and signed a veteran kicker to compete with Buehler. I guess there are usually veterans on the street that can be had…for a team looking to make a deep push in the playoffs, it is nice to have a kicker you know will be ready to have a really solid season.

4.RB situation – I would like to see it work as felix starts, and Barber grinds it out on a few drives and in the 4th. Choice will also have his share of plays. We need to be flexible, and ride the hot hand while keeping everyone fresh.

5. Free – I am really not too worried about him right now. That may change if I see him get blown by in preseason. I think he will be a solid LT for us.

6.ILB – I think Sean Lee will be a hard nose play maker for this team. He seems to have a high football IQ and work ethic. I could see both Lee and Williams sub in on the nickel as coverage LB’s….but they have to show they are ready to make plays.

7. As for Miles…I think teams were game planning last year on him by the end of the year. I see him having a very productive year. With so many weapons, I could see him having a better year with less production (If that makes any sense)

sorry these thoughts were all over the place

by death of the cool on Jul 26, 2010 3:22 PM CDT reply actions

also I wanted to add talk about the FS...

I think Ball did a nice job filling in last year, and he can be a solid (Not great) free safety….i also think Mike Hamlin is a guy that can make some plays back there. Together these two should give us at least average if not above play from safety.

by death of the cool on Jul 26, 2010 3:27 PM CDT up reply actions

I disagree

They’ve shown so little confidence in Hamlin that he’ll have to breakout just to be considered the backup.

I can see Ball as an adequate (below average to average) safety, but I’m worried about the depth at the position even before we start talking about his lack of size.

I think that Roy Williams will be superfluous by next year

Crayton and Hurd look more capable of filling the slot receiver spot.

It’s hard to project what Dez will do this year, so much of it depends on opportunities during a steep but large learning curve. I think Maclin’s 56 catches, 773 yards and 4 TD’s is a good goal.

I think Free is capable of doing well against most pass rushers, but I also like bringing in Barron as depth. I’m very concerned about depth behind Gurode.

FS is my biggest concern, especially depth. Though you can’t feel great about the CB depth past Scandrick.

I think there isn't any doubt that this is Roy's last year here.

Stinks that AOA isn’t going to get a chance to get in there and compete right away. Just hope this doesn’t end up being a lost year for him.
