GO RANGERS
On the subject of Lee to the Angels… Haha, fuck LA
On the subject of Prince to Texas, since it would involve Perez, I would say no. He is slow, and not a great defensive 1B… He mashes, yes. But the price, as we see it, is too high…
But hey, I could be wrong. We thought Lee would require a pentagon piece, and it didnt.

Why can't just him, Harden, Lee and I just hang out together?
by ghostofErikThompson on Jul 28, 2010 6:20 PM CDT up reply actions
because you need more self confidence
You need to walk up to Cliff Lee when he is stretching, look at him straight in the eye and say, “Mr. Lee. I want to spoon with you.”
Nobody is going to hand you anything on a platter, you know.
But then it would be a sextagon
And Dirkatron would take it over anyway…

OT: what are our chances of signing Lee in the offseason?
Man it would be awesome to see him keep pitching here for the next few years. But if you read the NY papers, they think it is a foregone conclusion that he signs with the Yankees next year. (ugh!) I guess a lot depends on if we ever get this ownership thing straightened out.

Padilla was close
3 years, $34 million.
Gagne’s deal was $11 million if he hit all his incentives.
They offered Zito $17 million a year or something like that.
by Adam J. Morris on Jul 28, 2010 6:34 PM CDT up reply actions
I think it's a possibility.
Didn’t he try to negotiate a long-term deal with Seattle before the season and they declined? I think he’s looking more for money and a no-trade clause than anything else. I could see him sticking around if the price is right, so it basically depends entirely on the ownership situation. It would probably be a surprise, but to say it is out of the question would be pretty wrong I would imagine.

Clinching The Division Math
I know the magic number is still pretty high, but with the Angels loss today, if the Rangers go .500 the rest of the way, the Angels would have to finish the season 38-20 just to tie the Rangers. That is like a .655 winning percentage and I don’t see them doing that.

I doubt the Red Sox or Angels would be willing to gamble on a waiver wire claim with a player like Derek Lee’s salary (prorated or not)
If sale goes through quickly enough

from Matches on playoff seeding
The meat of it…
If the season ended today, the Rangers would be the No. 2 seed, with the Yankees at No. 1, the White Sox at No. 3 and the Rays being the wild-card team … normally, the No. 1 seed plays the wild-card team in the ALDS, but in the event that both teams are in the same division, the No. 1 seed must play the No. 3 seed. This would pit the Rangers against the Rays in the ALDS.
Even if the Rangers were to catch the Yankees for the No. 1 seed, however, the match-up would still be Rangers vs. Rays in the first round, as there’s no such rule prohibiting the No. 2 seed from playing the wild-card team in the first round.
Should the seeding be by record?
http://www.bbtia.com/the-clubhouse/2010/7/28/a-note-on-playoff-seeding.html
The seeding not being by record thing doesn't bother me...
but what does is the Wild Card not being able to play the team from its division. That doesn’t really make sense to me.

I don't either.
But if the Yanks get the number one seed and the Rays get the Wild Card they can’t play each other because they’re in the same division, so we would play the Wild Card team (assuming we were #2) and the Yanks would play the Central champs. Basically, any way you look at it we’re pitted against an AL East team unless some other team steps up and takes the Wild Card.

I still think...
just in case the playoff run doesn’t last as long as we would hope, I’d like for the Rangers to face another team other than the Yankees just for the novelty of having a playoff game against another team in team history.
However, if the Ranger could get the Yankees at home for the ALDS, I’d be okay with that. Make ’em have to beat Cliff Lee twice in five games.

That’s one hell of a strikeout call by the ump.
He’s the Mike Carey of the MLB umpires.

My father went golfing with Mike Carey.
He said on the Eli Manning miracle play, had he been breathing out at the moment of the throw, rather than breathing in, it would have been blown dead as a sack.
And people try and tell me that determined the Giants were better than the Patriots.
I don't think I would have been able to finish the golf game after that.
Because at the time, I was astonished they let that play keep going.

Yeah, I just assumed it was going to be in the grasp.
I told some Patriots fans that story once and you’d have thought I killed their dogs.
What I hate about that play...
Is that somehow, Manning just blindly chunking the ball as far as he could into the middle of the field, suddenly turned him into a great quarterback.
Especially when a few plays later he threw it to a wide open Burress for the TD.

He has his moments, for sure.
What’s interesting, is that statistically his best season as a pro was last year. When the Giants missed the playoffs.
Meanwhile when he’s making the playoffs, he’s struggling.
Question: if Romo had given up 8 fumbles last season, despite 4k yards and a 93 QB rating…….would he have survived the offseason? Cowboys fans would be…..angry.

Oh. There is more to it than that.
But I honestly believe that if the Giants let him go no huddle more often he’d look a lot better. It helps him get into a rhythm and that’s when he’s dangerous. If he never settles into the game, he looks pretty ugly.
Agreed.
But he’s just good. Not great.
For a while, after that SB, he was held in regard as one of the top 5 in the NFL. Just because he won a ring. I freaking hate how the QB is judged by SB wins, while it was the defense that really won that game.

The guards were not good pass blockers.
He was quicker than they could handle. They could not touch him inside, and with Strahan constantly beating his man all night there was nowhere for Brady to go.
I loved that game even with the Giants winning. It was way too awesome to see Brady on the ground all damn game.
I watched every single play the Patriots ran that year.
And I’m no scout, but I’m going to disagree that the guards weren’t good pass blockers.
You don't have the offense they had without good blocking.
Although, to be fair, they used the short passes to open up the long plays. Still…..Brady was barely touched that season, and that game showed just how much he gets rattled.
I hate the Giants, but that was just fun as hell to watch.

Yeah, Brady's pocket presence was incredible before the injury.
And no one talks about his arm strength, but his ability to maintain precision downfield is phenominal, and put teams in a pickle when it came to defense.
I think the lack of Patriots sacks that year were more due to Brady and the scheme and Wes Welker than the line, but that line was still fantastic.
Wes Welker should get way more credit than that line.
He’s so hard to cover on those short routes, that a lot of teams just didn’t have time to get to Brady.
Brady made throws that season that should be deemed illegal.
I’ve grown to loathe his attitude, but I really think he’s one of the best deep passers to ever play in the NFL. It’s uncanny how accurate he is past 25 yards.

Late in the year, teams started to recognize a few weaknesses,
and the Patriots started catching a lot more blitzes. And teams were able to shake Brady up at times.
I’m not saying overall, that team didn’t have good blocking, but it wasn’t like the best ever.
Most of the time they weren't matched up with people who were that quick.
Then again, you very seldom see tackles with the quickness that Tuck has. And it wasn’t until after that that you saw a lot of ends moving inside to provide extra rush.
I can agree with this.
My point was that just because a QB wins a Super Bowl, that doesn’t make him an elite QB.
The fact that he was the MVP of that game is a flat out joke.

Random note
In addition to the projected Type A free agents we’ve got (Molina, Vlad, Lee, Oliver, and Francisco), Harden is at the bottom of the Type B list. If he comes back and pitches somewhat effectively, he could maintain that. Wouldn’t that be useful?
And for those hoping Molina drops to B-status, Napoli and Wieters are 4-6 points behind him.
Harden as a Type B
with a solid finish to the season is a good risk to take. He could probably get a 1 year deal elsewhere with some incentives.
