Astros, Phillies Reach Oswalt Agreement; Approval Needed
The Astros and Phillies have reached an agreement on a Roy Oswalt trade, reports Mark Berman of FOX 26 in Houston. Berman says the Astros are now waiting for Oswalt's approval, having hammered out the players and money with the Phils. Wednesday morning, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports had reported that the players were "pretty much agreed on." Lefty J.A. Happ has been a rumored part of the deal for a while now.

hmm, good for the stros
they needed to offload him now, if they can get a guy like Happ and get rid of most of his salary, Id say thats a huge win for them. The phillies window is closing, so this makes sense.
Feliz says his greatest thrill was striking out Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz, one of his heroes. Yet, when he called to tell his parents, his mother had a request: Strike out New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez, too.
"So when I did that," Feliz says, "I told my mom, 'There you go. There's your present. Don't ask me to strike anyone else out, OK?'

SI_JonHeyman heard #phils, #astros were discussing happ, rhp vance worley and 2 younger pitchers. could be package for #oswalt.
I bet there is going to be some pissed astros fans when this is all said and done
they have had some pretty lofty expectations of what they would get as a return based of the FO demands…

haha, ya
I think Houston fans still see Oswalt as an ace. But in reality he’s a good #2 about to enter his decline years, on a pretty big contract.

Berkman
With all the talk of the cost for Prince Fielder yesterday, both money and prospects, what would it take to get Berkman?
I must admit, I don’t watch very much NL/Astros baseball, so is the prevailing thought that Berkman isn’t healthy or that he’s done? If healthy, he’s just as good as Fielder.

think Berkman may be a Aug waiver deadline target

His power has been sapped by a bum knee
and I have my doubts that it will ever get better.
Who's Better?
Halladay, Hamels and Oswalt
Or
Lee, Lewis and Wilson?

comparison of ERA, FIP, xFIP:
Halladay: 2.21, 2.80, 2.95
Hamels: 3.48, 4.30, 3.79
Oswalt: 3.42, 3.40, 3.45
Lee: 2.40, 2.47, 3.30
Lewis: 3.40, 3.68, 3.92
Wilson: 3.03, 3.94, 4.58
Phils have the edge, but not by as much as I thought before looking it up.

Given the AL/NL differences
I think you could make a good argument that the Rangers trio has outperformed the Phils trio.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Doesn't mean you'd feel more comfortable with the Rangers trio rolling forward
Certainly doesn’t mean that for me
ahhh....
but what you are forgetting is that the Rangers have owned both Halladay AND Oswalt for their entire careers. I’m not worried.
Halladay, Hamels, and Oswalt
I wouldn’t want to face those 3 in any playoff series, but the Phillies most likely will not even make the playoffs this year.

I was just thinking what if the Phillies hadn't traded away Lee
Then they wouldn’t have needed to trade for Oswalt, and would be paying less money.
Remember when the Phillies gave up Lee for just about nothing?
I bet they’re really happy about having to go out and spend for a worse pitcher half a year later.

What would be comparable in our system?
I just read that the Astros are picking up $23M of Oswalts salary.

Stark is reporting $12 Million
As for prospects, I have no idea.

Damn
who are the Phillies throwing in to make that happen? This could be a much bigger deal than initially imagined.

tweets 2 minutes apart
ToddZolecki Ball remains in Roy Oswalt’s court. Keep hearing Happ and Class A prospect Jonathan Singleton are in the deal.
Ken_Rosenthal Hearing A) Singleton not in deal and B) #Phillies getting less than 12M, though number is in that range. Educated guess: 10-11M #Astros #MLB
The Phillies are so stupid...
if they do this. Why even give up Lee if you’re going to make this move?
And even if you do this move right now, I don’t know if they catch Atlanta.

Doesn't seem like much of a return

Happ, Worley, Gose
Astros couldn’t get Cosart or Singleton and still gave 11mm. Giggle.

a year extra of control
for about what Lee would have cost I think. Again, not like he’s incredibly smart but given financial constraints, quite the achievement fleecing the astros the way he did
Well yeah, for next year
I meant this year, giving if you apportioned some of the 11M to this year’s salary. It’s a pretty solid deal

ed_price Now have 2 people, not involved in trade, saying Phillies trading Jonathan Singleton in Oswalt deal. If so, that’s a good get for Astros.
meechone Singleton is in the lineup for Lakewood. It’s Happ, Gose, and Worley.
Fail. Fail. Fail.

Do owners only hire dumbasses as GM's?
Good god. You pay $11 mil to the Phils and don’t get Singleton?
