Phillies, Astros reportedly agree on Roy Oswalt deal

NEW YORK - JUNE 11: Roy Oswalt #44 of the Houston Astros looks on prior to a game against the New York Yankees on June 11 2010 in the Bronx borough of New York City. According to reports on July 29 2010 Oswalt will waive his no-trade clause and be traded to the Philadelphia Phillies for J.A. Happ and two prospects. (Photo by Mike Stobe/Getty Images)

The Phillies and Astros have supposedly agreed on a deal where Oswalt would go to Philadelphia in exchange for J.A. Happ, Anthony Gose, and Jonathan Villar, with the Astros supposedly picking up a good chunk of Oswalt's salary.

If true, this would be quite an underwhelming return for the Astros, and quite a pickup by the Phillies.

He wanted to stay in Texas.

He’s working with Maddux before in the minors and he’s worked with Nolan as well. It’s not out of the realm of possibility he could wind up here at some point.

I'm not sure of that either

I’d rather take the sure bet with Oswalt. Oswalt is also signed through 2011 and has the option for 2012 (which will be easily worth it if he pitches at the level he is now). Oswalt ALSO helps the club a lot right now.

I’d do that deal over the Cliff Lee deal in a heartbeat and I love Cliff Lee.

We give up Feldman, Erlins, and a couple fillers for Haren, and then Harrison/Holland/ or Hunter and maybe Beltre or Font plus nobodies for Oswalt? Then we roll out with Lee/Haren/Oswalt/Lewis/Wilson… Wow. And all but Lee would definitely be back next year.

to the prospect acquisition and development side.

Our drafts were meh, Our footprint in LA was non-existent. Our farm system suffered for it.

USA

by Longhorn on Jul 29, 2010 3:57 PM CDT up reply actions

JD took over in 2006

and he didn’t really convince Hicks to turn to a ground up development process until 2007. Melvin tried, and was fired (at least partly for this).

Scouting budgets were increased in 2007, which led to more and better knowledge being available for players which led to better players being drafted.

We had practically zero footprint in LA until ground up was initiated. More scouts were hired and better players were found and signed. We built a complex (maybe two now?) there as well.

You’re point as to what could be possible if we could spend on the ML payroll now what we spent up until 2007 has merit, but to say we could have done the moves with Hicks circa 2000 – 2007 is false because the organization was in no shape to be able to make these moves.

The next owner needs to be able to increase revenue and then properly allocate that revenue across the various business units. Hicks never figured this out, and it’s one of several reasons I can’t understand why people think he was a good owner here.

And here is part of it.

In doing so, A-Rod is, more or less, doing his own bit of "double lawyering" as the committee for all the unsecured creditors have filed objection to the plan based upon written guarentees. That would cover the likes of other Rangers players such as Kevin Millwood, Michael Young, Vicente Padilla, Mickey Tettleton, and Mark McLemore, but lalso businesses such as Tickets.com, Rawlings, New Era Caps, and hundreds more.

We already have two freaking utility infielders, I don't think we need another

We have to drop someone to take on Cantu, so I'm guessing CD goes down

Cantu becomes the starter.

I think...

Davis goes down
Cantu plays mostly 1B with Moreland getting some starts

well if Moreland does not do much....

cd may come up to back up 1B and be a defensive sub

He might

I more meant that he is never going to be productive here. I think eh will have a few good years for another team though.

We pay 1.5 mil. Why we gave up little

Have players; will sell for cash

At least that is what JD will be putting on Craigslist before long. I hate Tom Hicks.

We gave up nothing for Cantu

Ok

Did either of those two have a shot at The Show in our system?

But with TJ what are the chances of that?

Did he have enough potential to be protected on the 40 this year

which I believe he would have had to be protected. That’s tough to put either of them on the 40. So we gave away two players that were going to be exposed to the rule 5 draft. Those are exactly the kind of players we should have traded.

by Tex2044 on Jul 29, 2010 4:14 PM CDT up reply actions

good thinking

he would have had to be protected and we most likely wouldn’t have and would have probably lost him

I'm not mad at JD or this trade

Just know we’d have 3 more decent minor leaguers on the roster if it weren’t for Hicks. And Omar Poveda is nothing to sneeze at.

TJ surgery isn't anything to sneeze at either.

That's why you have guys like Evan Reed and Omar Poveda in your system

We have more good relievers and relief prospects than we know what to do with. Reed, Lueke, etc. have very little to us except as a trade chip.

Poveda has been intriguing, but he’s injured and even if he was healthy he wouldn’t have cracked the top ten in our system.

You can’t hoard prospects and then 100% of them become All-Stars for your team. Those are the guys you trade to put a playoff team over the top to becoming a pennant contender and you never look back.

Don't mind trading them for players we need...

I just hate selling them for cash (something an owner should be providing).

by Akalhar on Jul 29, 2010 4:11 PM CDT up reply actions

While as a general theory I agree

I really don’t care too much about any of them except Beavan. I wish we still had him.

by brettgardner on Jul 29, 2010 4:12 PM CDT up reply actions

Cwun will be sorely missed.

Michael Main I don’t miss (don’t see him panning out).
Omar Poveda is a wild card so it doesn’t hurt quite as bad.

If we received something more than cash for these guys, it would be nice. Feels like slavery to sell a person for a bag of cash. :)

What is the 40 status of the guys we've moved..

I wonder how much the pending fortypocalypse may have played.

Ken_Rosenthal Source: Berkman “in play,” discussions taking place. Deal far from guaranteed. Berkman, like Oswalt, has full no-trade.

Not much.

Houston would have to pick up a large chunk of his remaining salary. I’m not sure what he’s owed still. Club option for 2011 for $15M, which we wouldn’t exercise. Unsure what buy-out is. Looks like $2M? We’d have to dump prospects for the cash portion.
