Minors 7/29
Looks like someone is slacking so I will do this for today + I have a fancy new chart to post.
And we just traded for Cantu (fuck).
Today's starters (from Mr. Lucas):
7:00 - AAA: Michael Kirkman
7:00 - AA: Tanner Roark
9:30 - High-A: Robbie Ross
6:00 - Low-A: Braden Tullis Erlin
9:00 - Short-A: Chadwick Bell
9:00 - Rookie: Shawn Blackwell
David Brown at BBTIA had a very nice post about Matt Thompson and comparing his season in A ball to other pitchers with similar k/9, bb/9 and GB%. I used the same pitchers but included K% and BB% (I like those two better than k/9 and bb/9)...
via i26.tinypic.com
All those guys have a better k% than W. Thompson but W. Thompson has the lowest bb% of all the players on that chart. Cueto and Hughes have a significantly (I think 5% is significant, correct me if I am wrong) higher k%.

It's always a good day when Erlin pitches.
Do you think they will be aggressive with Erlin next year after using this year to get some innings under his belt?
Sure
I can see a season like Beavan in ‘09, split between high-A and AA. But even if he spends all year in high-A, he’ll still be among the youngest at that level.

definitely.
I’m not worried about him being too old for a level. I tend to lean towards thinking the Rangers are too aggressive with their promotions.
He still has the highest K/BB ratio RIght?
Nobody punished like Earl and No one was nastier than Ryan
Erlin
Started out well and had only given up a few hits through 5 ip. He gave up 4 ER in the 6th.
6 IP | 5 H | 4 R | 4 ER | 1 BB | 5 SO | 1 HR
ok, this is almost so sarcastic and unlikely that it just might be true
Feliz says his greatest thrill was striking out Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz, one of his heroes. Yet, when he called to tell his parents, his mother had a request: Strike out New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez, too.
"So when I did that," Feliz says, "I told my mom, 'There you go. There's your present. Don't ask me to strike anyone else out, OK?'
Low LD
but it was crushed, Jake Skole was impressed, Mike Olt was just happy Engel did his best.

I think a lot of people following the Rangers think that Derrick Holland projects to be better than he might actually be. Can he be a solid #2 guy or is that asking too much?
Klaw (2:12 PM)
Very reasonable.
"No nuts, no glory"
How much you want to bet this is a guy from LSB
that has been arguing that Holland is the one who should have been traided? I hope he didn’t kill himself when Law didn’t agree with him.

september call up
like this guy more and more, He’s the Moreland of our Pitching prospects if that makes any sense

He has some pretty good raw stuff
he’s pretty unlike Moreland who’s a guy with good #s with iffy tools vs. a guy with great stuff and a glaring weakness in the #s.

Pre 2007, Kirkman would have been one of, if not the top pitching prospect in our system
We’d be hanging on every start hoping he got the walks under control.
just in terms of the way we underrate him
because he’s performing really well at a high level but gets lost behind guys who seem to have more upside… Even though, as you said, Kirkman has a pretty good upside with his power arm.

If Kirkman were putting up these numbers w/out the BBs we'd be a lot higher on him
He’s walking over 7 batters per 9 when facing RHB.

Not really Kirkman is only 23. He was a pretty high draft pick as well. The thing I like about
his outing no walks if he can command his stuff watch out.
Wow...
TBrownYahoo Looks like Twins have deal for Capps. Nats get Ramos.
Waiting to see who else is involved but wow if the Twins only get Capps.
"No nuts, no glory"
I think this speaks more about how badly Ramos was being overrated.

I agree
though I’m sure his .625 OPS this season didn’t help.

He is only 22 and it's not like you have to trade him this season when his value is at it's lowest (if you look at the numbers).
Good job by Washington.
"No nuts, no glory"
Eh
he’s never hit exceptionally well. He has ok power, but really mediocre patience and his defense is so-so. What exactly is his upside.
Also, maybe Galloway can write a requiem for pudge.

I don't really expect too much offense much from a catcher...
but read Ramos is a LD hitter who won’t walk much and his defense is pretty good (questions about his game calling ability).

Rauch has been better though
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
Profar's back! 0-1 Skole 0-1
Sounded like he got ahold of the pitch and nailed the pitcher in the shin. Unfortunately he was able to pick the ball up and throw him out.
Even when Jake Skole makes outs
he makes the pitcher feel the pain!

This announcer loves Profar on defense. He was almost at a loss for words
I bet he’s asked him for his autograph before.
And made sure to tell the first baseman to tell his pitcher it was a really nice pitch anyway, and he works hard and that's what really matters

You could hear him talking to the pitcher over the radio feed as he rounded the bases.
He just wanted him to know he’ll buy him and his friends the 1st round of drinks after the game, and he’ll stick around to be the DD.
Goddamn he's awesome.

Ross
Anyone else realize Ross has a sub 3 ERA at Bakersfield? I just assumed he was getting hit harder than that. SSS, but he was striking out 9/9ip coming in to today’s game.
Yeah
short sample, his K% were really high initially in both Spokane and Hickory too and then kind of fell off as we went along. Wait and see and see if the league adjusts.

Cool

I wonder if Erlin will be promoted out of Hickory.
Is there an open spot without a promotion?

No, I asked Jason Cole about it on twitter
He said maybe move Thompson to the bullpen to manage his innings, but he wasn’t sure.
Yeah, the Hickory bunch is going to slow down soon
Thompson has already gone well over what he had last year, 104.1 to 72. Ramirez has gone even farther than Thompson, with 104.2 vs. 66.1. Brigham is almost at last year’s total (89, about 80 this year). Tullis is getting close with 57, had 68 last year. Erlin only had 4 pro innings and I have no idea what he had in high school, but I’ve got to think they’re not going to let him go too much over 100.
Robbie Ross is currently 43 innings over last year. Miggy has exceeded last year’s total by 9 innings now.

Nah, they're just going to throw
3 or 4 pitch innings.
