Chris Davis optioned to AAA
Per Jeff Wilson, Chris Davis has been optioned to AAA to make room on the roster for Jorge Cantu tomorrow.
I'm guessing we'll see a Mitch Moreland/Cantu platoon for the next month or so.

I think it depends on how wel Mooreland plays
Cantu is a know commodity, although I don’t know if he has many at bats against American league pitchers. I wouldn’t be surprised if it is a 50/50 split.

But hes still only on his second option year. He has one more left after this season
JD throwing Chris under the bus with his
comment of “we’ll be getting more offensive production than we have been” on acquiring Cantu … the writing was on the wall. I think the Rangers are pretty much out on Davis now. Wonder if they will try and shop him (along with others) for one last trade. 2b perhaps.

But i ran into Davis at Panera once
I was wearing a Royals’ cap. He was wearing a business suit
I had a table by the door, and he was on his way out. I noticed who he was after a quick glimpse, but went back to my laptop because i didn’t think he would want it to be a big deal. But he continued to look in my direction even after he was out the door.
He was probably thinking to himself.. ‘Pffttt… Kansas City’…

Come on ...
are you serious? The GM coming out and saying that after Moreland was called up and trading for Cantu and you don’t think that it was obvious that Davis would not be sticking around any longer? He could have said “Chris is struggling a little bit at the plate but he’ll have some more chances to get it straightened out”… or some response like that … but he straight up called him out. Regardless of if he was “telling it like it is” … I’m saying that there were other ways to do that than be so blunt about it. There are many ways for an upper level guy to spin what he was saying and it not sound like he’s dogging his player.
Happy birthday to Kenny. Happy birthday to you.
Who cares.
Chris has sucked. If his skin is so thin that he can’t accept the criticism that a .200 BAA with no power or patience is a fail then he shouldn’t be in professional sports.
no patience
9.7 BB% isn’t awful. Patience is what the Rangers don’t seem to show with all of the admittedly crap 1B production they’ve gotten from Smoak, Davis, Garko, probably from Cantu as well. Although I suppose .260/.310/.410 will be an improvement.
Maybe we should go to namby pamby land and get him some self confidence

Chris Davis is not a Little Leaguer.
He knows he has been terrible. He has to. He also has to know that his team is in the hunt to win the whole thing. Chris Davis, for lack of a better phrase, is a big boy. He can handle it, and Daniels knows that.

This is going way beyond what I was getting at. IMO, with what JD’s comments were about 1b and it’s production… I saw that as, “Oh boy, Davis doesn’t look like he’ll be around much longer”. No one is debating on whether Chris Davis could handle what JD said.
Happy birthday to Kenny. Happy birthday to you.

Cantu - srsly - somebody give me a brief scouting report
My impression is that he’s a righty with meh pop and a .250 avg – ’bout right?
above-average pop
"If the Saints can reach the Superbowl, the Rangers can reach the World Series." - PhilKid
The Animated Ballpark in Arlington
it's more like average pop
but when you take into account the position, it’s probably closer to meh pop
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
Bland year so far
Was taken out in SF today while playing 3B. Before today’s game was batting .259, OBP-.308, 39 Rs, 10 HRs, 54 RBI’s in 370 AB, 75Ks, 15 errors!
I think his power improves simply on the basis
that he doesn’t have to play in Florida. as a righty, you really have to crush the ball to get it over the wall, especially in the power alley
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
Offensively, Florida is very slightly above-average for righties.
Home runs, though, are deflated for righties. That should improve, definitely. Of course that doesn’t mean the value improves, just the actual numbers.
Probably a below average offensive player.
Average power, weak on base skills, average striker outer.
Probably clings to replacement-level at first, but that’s better than we’ve been getting. Stable platoon split over his career, pretty even from both sides (reversed recently, I believe, but for a split that’s a SSS). Nothing good, but better than we’ve had and certainly likely to be better against lefties than most off of the bench.
Cantu
I just fear they will try to roll him out at 2b…. i get shivers at the thought
"I'm against picketing, but I don't know how to show it." - Mitch Hedberg

I seem to recall back in Spring Training some local scribe relating a story where he asked a scout who would be playing 1st base for the Rangers come August, Smoak or Davis? And the scout replied, “Moreland.” Did I recall that correctly?

Happy birthday to Kenny. Happy birthday to you.
I don't think Moreland is a platoon guy though
he hits as well facing lefties as he does righties. You’d hate to play Cantu at 2B, but you at least see what he’s got there for a week or so. Of course, when Kinsler comes back you can go to a straight split and give Young some off days at 3B without downgrading the offense to Blanco levels.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
I don't want to see what Cantu has at second for a week.
Cantu also has an even split, but most pitchers don’t.
Give me a straight split or Cantu on the bench.
and hopefully
sucks much less in the majors.

I just don’t understand the pleasure y’all seem to take in seeing them fail. Comparing you to Josey was too far as he seems to jump into random conversations trying to instigate arguments about this.
I don't believe
I take pleasure in seeing him fail. I take pleasure in seeing us getting a different alternative at 1B after seeing Davis fail at it so often.
For most teams in the majors, 1B is one of the best positions for offensive production. We got .226/.272/.411 OPS .684 out of it last year and so far have gotten .201/.298/.318 OPS .615 out of it this year. That is completely fucking unacceptable. We are playing to win, not to try to fix guys with craptastic batting eyes like Davis.
I could give a good god damn if he ever gets another chance for the Rangers, and I damn sure don’t want to see him as next years starter. Going into the season with shit at 1B and C is getting way old.

I still remember Hank making his big league debut and slashing balls all over the field for base hits. I liked him a lot....
Especially when he hit that game winning home run in the all star game. My guess is that injuries took a toll on him, and caused his play to diminish. But I always hoped he might be able to come back to his former self. It just never happened. There are probably more than several Rangers that had three or four good years that helped the ball club. And there is no joy when their skills diminish to the point when they don’t really help the club. But that’s baseball and hopefully he made some good money for his family during that time.
i don't get your out right hate for this kid, whats the deal with you?
He like Smoak tried his best, it just did not work out and the rangers being in a race could not afford to stick with him, given time i still think he will be a very good first baseman, how about the try to be just a bit human for a change, try it, you might like it.

While the Rangers and Marlins were working out the trade that sent Jorge Cantu to Texas, the Rangers also took a chance to “reach for the sky” and inquired on the availability of Josh Johnson. According to MLB.com’s Joe Frisaro, the Rangers were willing to offer their top three prospects, but were told the Marlins’ ace is “unmovable.”

would guarantee Lee resigning (if he wants to win, that is)

Not sure you cant write off a GM that's put together a team that is winning like this
Even if the new management WANTS a new guy, you can’t just cut success
Really?
JD has cleaned up the offseason 40 situation while helping the current roster.
Smoak hurts. Beaven/Main sting a little. The rest? Who cares.
the fact
that he tried Josh Johnson is why the writing is on the wall.

I think they want to get a feel for what Moreland can do
If they make the playoffs, I wouldn’t be surprised if Davis were on the playoff roster, since it isn’t like they’d want/need 12 pitchers.
If they cut back to 10 — 4 starters and 6 relievers — that would let them have a bench of Murphy, Moreland, Davis, Arias, Blanco, and Teagarden.

though Davis’s approach was much better lately… but he wasn’t producing.
and I would LOVE that deal for Johnson. hell of a lot to give up but Johnson is the pitcher that we hope Perez can be, Beltre’s a work-in-progress, Scheppers looks like a dominant relief pitcher and that’s it… for a probable nl cy young? hell yes. Wilson, Johnson, Lewis, Hunter? (Bringing CJ out of the pen?) god that would’ve been great. plus he’s locked up. too bad.

Davis...
This has been mentioned before somewhere (Jamey maybe??), but it doesn’t look like the head of his bat stays in the zone very long. It’s like he flicks his bat rather than swinging it on a level plane through the zone. It’s really weird, and I think Teagarden does something very similar.
Anybody else see this?
5-29-09
I‘m no hitting coach and won‘t suggest to you that I‘ve spotted a correctable flaw in Chris Davis‘s swing, but to my baseball eye it sure looks like the head of Davis‘s bat is flipping – almost flicking – through the zone, causing him to swing through average fastballs. The swing looks level enough but seems like it‘s not staying in the zone long enough.

That is because CD does not know what type of pitch is coming so his reaction time is slow.
In his head all he thinks about is trying not to SO so he fouls a ton of pitches off to stay alive in IMO. I will give him this that he sees a lot more pitches that before but he has given up his power not to SO. I think its all a confidence thing. If I was Wash I would tell him to go up and not worry about SOs and swing out of your shoes.
Thanks Jamey...
I knew I had read/heard that somewhere before. I really think there’s something to this, he’s not even giving himself a chance with that swing.
Actually...
sometimes it is called a loop in the swing. When Teagarden’s arms were extended, the bat went through the strike zone level, which helped him drive that home run to right-center field. I noticed on the low, inside pitches the swing was not level, looping down towards the pitch and then looping up on the follow through. That’s something very specific that Clint Hurdle can have him work on, droping his hands lower towards the level of the pitch. The problem is some batters never get a loop out of their swing.

Don't know that anyone can be sure, given the tiny MIL sample
But I’d hazard a guess that either the FO thinks he can float defensively, or the difference in offensive value he’ll bring so greatly outweighs CD’s that it won’t matter in the end.
I could jive with either of those.
