World Cup Thread - Semi-Finals - DEUTSCHLAND v. ESPAÑA
We've reached the semis, ladies and gentlemen. Your final four in the 2010 World Cup / Republic of South Africa are Uruguay - Nederlands - Deutschland and España
(bracket current as of 10.10p CDT on 5 Sunday 2010)
The fixtures are as follows:
Deustchland v. España - Durban, Republic of South Africa
Wednesday, 7 July - 1.30p CDT -- ESPN / Univision / 1440 AM Radio Esperanza
The Oranje machine keeps rolling along, as they advanced to the Finals on Tuesday with a 3-2 win over Uruguay. An open Giovanni Van Bronckhorst launched a wicked shot from ~30 yards out past the keeper Muslera early in the first half to put the Dutch ahead. But Diego Forlán, a key cog in this year's Cup, brought Uruguay level before the half with a beautiful strike off the hands of Netherlands' keeper Maarten Stekelenberg in the 41st minute
Controversy would be had however in the 70th minute when a deflected pass made it's way past Muslera into the Uruguay goal. Upon replay, Dutch forward Robin Van Persie appeared to be offside, but the goal stood and would ultimately keep the Netherlands ahead.
Arjen Robben added a nice header late to put the Dutch up 3-1. Uruguay responded valiantly as Maxi Pereira snuck one in in added time to bring Las Charrúas back to life. But it wasn't enough.

Ladies and gentlemen, the national anthem of España
-------------------------------------------- and now, the national anthem of Deutschland --------------------------------------------

Still wish the U.S. was in it? Relive the magic

The German anthem is pretty damn gut

Maybe this year's different
but Germany in the past has always reminded me of the 90s’ Braves. They’re always there in the end, but they never seem to be able to win it all. Maybe this years different, but having to get through potentially Spain and the Netherlands is going to be tough, no doubt.
If Germany wins it
you can’t say they didn’t earn it: England, Argentina, Spain, Holland in the knockout round. I have a feeling that Spain beats them. They have been much more dangerous without El Nino (although that has coincided with the ends of games), and he’s benched for this one apparently.

Oh no doubt
That game against Argentina was really one of the most impressive displays of domination in soccer I’ve ever seen.
.
In many countries, The Netherlands is often referred to as “Holland”. This usage is technically incorrect, as “Holland” is actually a region in the central-western part of The Netherlands, divided into two provinces.
I’m hoping for a Germany/Netherlands final and I honestly don’t know who I’d pick if that happened.
One other thing, did you know there is not a single referee from the US in this World Cup? What’s up with that? Have no Americans worked their way up from the MLS to a top-tier international league somewhere?

Have you not watched and seen how awesome
refs from South America and Africa are?

Unbelieveable
Two saves by the keepers and in between a disallowed goal because they entered too early. Crazy game

I'm going out on a limb here
Germany is pretty good. They schooled Argintina today with some beautiful goals.
I love how Spain's solution to a lack of width is bringing on another CM.

Don't think he has to.
They could drop Torres and start Llorente or drop Torres and start Navas.
I'm surprised Navas hasn't played more
He made an immediate impact in the couple of games he played.
Yeah, I had never heard of the guy
And was surprised when he came on for Silva…but that guy is good. He seems to be one of the few Spanish players to be aggressive in the final third.
If Brad Pitt is playing Beane who do you want playing you?

He's an interesting story.
Crippling homesickness isn’t exactly a common trait amongst professional soccer players.
could that goal have had any more deflections off the post?

I didn't know this thread was here.
Oh well. Just assume that I made a comment about that slew of PKs.
I think it's safe to say that it's Germany's to lose.
They’re gonna steamroll Spain.
And as far as the other bracket goes? I’d have to bet on Netherlands at this point. Uruguay has gotten lucky for the last time.

Me, too.
It would be like the theoretical pre-2004 Red Sox- Cubs World Series.

Your browser was running slow
So your solution to that problem was posting links to 1 picture and 6 You Tube videos?
Well done!!!!

Go Germany!!!
I have a lot of German ancestry plus they have the lowest number of “Flopper/I’ve been shot” guys that I have seen in the tournament.

I keep thinking Spain has to turn it around sometime...
and I have this bad feeling it’s going to be against Germany in the semis. Spain has not played a real good team yet, unless you call the overrated Portuguese a good team.
Shame Muller will miss the semi-final, that was a really dodgy yellow card, considering Messi basically did the same thing on the same play…
Remember to retire Fin's number, Mark.
Stupid question:
Is there any way possible, that someone with no soccer experience, never played collegiately, no club résumé… any way at all someone could make the WC squad in 2014?
If they had really good skill, just unrealized potential, and a crapload of training, club experience… any way a complete nobody could work their way up the ranks in 4 years and make the team?
It would be....difficult.
It could work in a situation where you have a young player, say 17 or 18 now, who gets 2 years of MLS seasoning followed by 2 years of play in Europe.
Even then, most of the players who are capable of that have been scouted for the previous couple of years already anyways.

It's really stupid how many players are missing games this late in the tourny for petty bullshit

Maybe he's talking about Muller?
De Jong deserved his yellow and Suarez damn sure deserved his red.
muller's was pretty nit picky

Muller's was awful.
That ref should be forced to eat a fistful of Muller’s pubes. Completely accidental handball where he was actually pulling his arm out of the way.
The handball yellow guy... whoever that is.

and Forlan punches back
Forlan totally had the glow of Kobe at his everyfuckingshotgoesin best on that goal.
Sounds like the Dutch are throwing the game

Although they lost
Uruguay were really impressive today. With Suarez back, they’re going to give the loser of Germany/Spain alot of trouble on Saturday
The Germans
Their anthem ain’t half bad. Neither is the Dutch.
some terrible anthems: England… yes… Spain’s is grossly monotonous, Brasil, while justifiably colorful is just too long
I love England's

Surely the Germans will throw this game
because the last thing anyone wants to do is invalidate Paul the Octopus.
Well...
Other than the US making a miracle run to the final, this is exactly the final that I wanted to see.
by ghostofErikThompson on Jul 7, 2010 4:04 PM CDT reply actions
Yep
Going into the tournament, the teams I had a rooting interest in were the USA, Serbia, England, Spain, and the Netherlands, so it’s pretty cool to see two of those playing in the final.
This may be one of those times I just root for a good game, as it’s going to be near-impossible to decide which team I want to win- I have both Dutch and Spanish ancestry, and both sides have two Liverpool players.
Go Oranje! Go Espana!
Guess I was really wrong about the Germans running away with this
Muller being out looked to really hurt the attack.
Oh well. Let’s go Dutch!
