7/30 and beyond Minors thread
Thanks to coolaid for pinch-hitting yesterday while I did lawyer things that pay more money than LSB Fanposts. But if you want to start paying me, Adam, that'd be great. TIA. Friday starters:
- Omar Beltre goes for the Redhawks.
- King Richard on the mound for the presently-reeling Frisco Roughriders. The Bleienheart dominated in CGSHO fashion last time out, let's hope can he can rally his retreating forces and win a victory over the infidels tonight.
- Fredo looks to continue his encouraging midsummer run through the Cal League.
- Big Jake will hopefully channel his inner John Wayne and thrown down a heroic performance for Hickory.
- The since-promoted Miggy of the Santos was scheduled, per BBTiA, but Scott Lucas reports Sir Andrew Conan Doyle will take his place.
- Conflicting report. BBTiA says Zeke Rijo, Lucas says Shawn Blackwell. I predict it could be one or the other, or perhaps neither, but not both at the same time.
Saturday starters after the jump.
- OKC: Harden (unless he starts @ Anaheim, which is apparently possible)
- Frisco: Tatusko
- BAK: Pimentel
- Hickory: Danny Gutierrez (now that some of the 'Dad pitchers are reaching career high IP totals, I wonder if we'll see more and more of a rested D-Gut)
- Randy Rojas
- Carlos Melo Yellow

Buechele might have to activate himself to play at the rate they’re going.
At this point, we might see some quick promotions from Hickory or Bakersfield to Double A. No really good candidates spring to mind, though. Olt should probably go to HIC, but I don’t know who should move up.

It is awfully dangerous in Hickory right now
I didn’t think it was safe to have more than 1 De Los Santos on a roster at one time, and they have 3. I was looking at the leaders in the DSL and there are two Abel De Los Santos, 1 for the Rangers and 1 for another team.

Electric fastball
mechanics a little like Neftali’s in that it’s just easy heat. Ranges between 93-100, generally 94-98. Pretty good natural life. Secondary stuff is the biggest question. He tends to fall in love with his fastball. He flashes a decent breaking ball at times but heeds to throw it more often.
He’s a nice relief prospect. Not an elite relief prospect, but a good developing one. Seems like his fastball command is coming along, although he’s definitely more of a thrower than a pitcher.

It's very impressive.
It just makes me realize how impressive it was for Martin Perez to pitch the way he did at 17 two levels above David Perez.
Yeah, that's pretty ridiculous
Yesterday someone mentioned the fact that Tanner Roark was “just” in Double A and already 23 years old. I got to thinking that Perez, Andrus, Feliz, and friends have really destroyed our perception of a “normal” prospect development curve.
Under normal circumstances, a 23 year-old performing well in Double A might be considered average development, but not in our system. Here, if you’re not in the majors at age 20-21, or at the very least hitting Double-A in your teens, you’re a failure.
A strange, awesome world we live in as Rangers fans.

I don't agree at all
The Rangers treat every prospect differently, and guys that are raw, or just came out of college with holes in their game move slower.
Freude schöner Götterfunken, Tochter aus Elysium, Freude!
I mean from the fans' point of view, not the club itself
The club does a great job of treating each prospect as unique and challenging them with promotions and level assignments that are best suited for their individual circumstances.
What I meant was that sometimes as fans, now that we’ve seen Andrus, Feliz, Perez, etc. race through the system at a very young age, we expect all good prospects to move just as quickly. And if a guy doesn’t, he must not be very good.

We actually have a few 17 yr old pitchers on the DSL squad.
I don’t kow anything about them except for Perez and Payano. I asked about Jose Oviedo. He’s a big kid and only 17. The 17 year olds:
Dario Beltre 6’3 170
Abel De Los Santos 6’2 180
Jesus Diaz 6’1 170
Jose Oviedo 6’5 190
Victor Payano 6’5 185 LHP
David Perez 6’5 200
Roberto Perez 6’4 150 Seems like he pitched decent over 15 IP as a 16 yr old last year. I think he’s been hurt most of the year this year.
I'm liking me some David Perez, love to see that SPO assignment next year

amazing season he has put together
I gotta think this guy is about as good an upper level reliever prospect as there is. Tons of strikeouts (31%) and grounders (57%), with very good walk rate as well. Parks rates his AOFP just a tick behind Ogando, so scouting lines up with stats pretty well here.

Anyone know anything about Jose Oviedo?
He’s a 6’5 190lb pitcher for the DSL Rangers that doesn’t turn 18 until January, 2011. He’s only pitched 2 innings, just didn’t recognize his name.
At minor musings
they list him as a 2010 J2 signing. It had to be from last years class though because he pitched 1 inning on July 1st.
The one I was looking at doesn't turn 18 until 1/23/2011
He had 1 IP on 1 Jul and 1 IP yesterday in relief of David Perez. I assumed we just signed him late, similar to Alfaro. I was just curious about him because he had good size at 6’5 190.
that's just a guess
he was eligible to sign last year, no one signed him, TX followed him, then signed him this year at age 17. So yeah, I think he’s a 2010 j2 sign. Whether he’s a legit prospect is the real question…probably not.
ok, that's what I was wondering
He seems to have a good frame. Which of the pitchers on the DSL are actual prospects? David Perez, and Payano. Who else?
Leo Gil
Not sure why he wasn’t promoted to the AZL last year or at the very least to begin 2010. He’s putting up dominating #s again but was on the DL for a couple weeks in July. Cole might know more about his stuff.
Intriguing guys: Abel de los Santos, Luis Parra (~100k sign in 08; below ave command). Sample size to small on the young relievers to know much.
Unless they signed at least a 6 figure deal, there is likely no scouting report on them not written by Cole or Parks who might have seen them in instructs or talked to scouts about them.
I can't believe how well he's doing in Spokane

yep
After a slow 1st 9 games, he’s really started to hit and cut down on his SO from around 35% down to 21%(I think, I didn’t look them up again). Listening on the radio, he seems like he is very patient. It sounds like he watches a lot of breaking balls, waiting for a fastball he can drive. The last few times I’ve heard him strikeout, it’s been on fastballs up around his chest. He just has to learn when it’s too high.
For an 18yo getting his 1st taste, I won't complain

Just a suggestion
but why not try charting a few games….?
follow firebat's example
if you are listening to the radio feed
The vast majority of the games
are played on the complex, where people really aren’t allowed in without permission. So really no coverage gets out of there. Every once in awhile they’ll play a game at the big stadium in San Pedro de Macoris but that’s only a couple times each year.
Good deal
Would they give you or Parks permission to go down to scout? I’m reading through the dominicansummerleague.com right now. It seems like the box score’s get updated there before milb.com. I get annoyed waiting for milb.com to update them.
Or
Do you plan on doing an interview with the manager? I know you used to do one when Tingler was down there. OT question. Do you think Rangers fans here are underrating Telis as a prospect?
Yeah I interviewed Kenny Holmberg
earlier this year, and I plan on doing another one within the next couple weeks. I can go down there to the complex and cover the goings-on. I will eventually but not sure when. Hoping to potentially do Dominican instructs in November this year but we’ll see.
And I think Telis might have been overrated by some (including myself) last year. Nice bat but he has a long way to go defensively and may not be able to play anywhere else but behind the plate.
This is the first year I've really followed the minor's this closely
I’m just learning what I’m looking at in the box scores. I have to convince my wife, but I’m trying to get up to Hickory to watch some of the games.

Apparently Profar just fielded a ball past 2B on the 1B side and threw the runner out at 1st. The announcer went crazy. The only problem is this announcer goes crazy for Profar on defense all of the time, so I don’t know if it really was a great play or if the announcer is just in love with him.

I think Profar’s more likely to move to 3b than 2b. He’s got a very, very strong arm—and there’s more likely to be a void there in 3-5 years.

Brett Weibley
Has a very bizarre line on the season.
11.3 ERA, 14.1 IP, 15 K, 6 BB, 2 HR, 25 H, 19 ER.
2.11 G:F, so he’s getting grounders, and striking guys out, not walking an obscene amount, and not giving up an obscene amount of homers, but getting scored on on the regular anyways.
Kind of an evil universe version of Matt Thompson, I suppose.

Make that 19th, oops
I have a feeling I’ve probably doubled the amount of Brett Weibley mentions on this blog tonight.

Really lost control this inning. Atleast a couple were on curveballs, but it’s tough to tell. They don’t give much descriptions of the pitches.

This was by far his best outing. Encouraging
This is a really impressive outing from him.
Maybe Goyoringo or J. Cole can comment on him, but I think he was one of our bigger signings last year.
Per BA
at the time of the signing (j2 2008, debut 2009), 85-88 with decent secondary stuff (decent for a 16yo, likely meant he can spin a CB and/or has a feel for a slider or change). Had terrible control issues last year; has command issues this year. He may or may not have projection, as he was very skinny (6.2/160) when he signed. So more questions than answers. He signed in the low six figures, so probably the low end of 100-150K (about what Telis, H-Mart, T-Mart, O. Herrera signed for). Most high-ceiling starters don’t spend a second year in the DSL. My guess, limited ceiling, FB command issues, one decent secondary pitch that DSL kids can’t hit. That’s all I got.
yes, you're probably right
but he was 17 last year, 18 all of this year. He only had 35 K’s in 51 IP last year while walking 33. This year he has 40 SO in 38.1 IP with 19BB. At least he’s making improvements.
there is info
on players from the 2008 and 2009 draft and j2 periods in the “archived” worksheets over at M&M, fyi
Thanks. I'm going to go look threw it.
I barely followed the minors back then. This is the first year I’ve been serious about it.

Matt Thompson's GO/FO rates and K/BB are really really good
might be the best in our entire minor league system. I’ll be interested to see how he holds up as he moves up. He gave up alot of HRs so that will be key as he moves up the ladder.
Feliz says his greatest thrill was striking out Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz, one of his heroes. Yet, when he called to tell his parents, his mother had a request: Strike out New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez, too.
"So when I did that," Feliz says, "I told my mom, 'There you go. There's your present. Don't ask me to strike anyone else out, OK?'
